I throw this on sometimes when I'm flying around in Elite:Dangerous. So perfect. Maybe a millennium in the future, if we ever do break the speed of light, someone will play this theme in the first space ship to cross the stars.
phuturephunk Yeah, it really is an epic theme that suits its purpose wonderfully. I'm not sure if they can top it for the new game! I love the attention to detail on Elite and think that Star Control could definitely benefit from the kind of immersive atmosphere it has. I'm sure the new game won't be adopting any sort of first person perspective or spaceflight simulation aspects like Elite, but I do hope it will preserve the same feeling that both Elite and SC2 possess, of traveling across vast and lonely distances of space at great speeds. SC3 completely lost the plot with respect to that gameplay element. I think (hope) Stardock realizes this and are working to restore that sense of feeling connected to your ship as you pilot it into the vast unknown.
The sc2 music was crowd sourced iirc and this track is a remix of another game (lemmings) ost doing a cover of One Way or Another by Blondie. It's in the beat all through once you hear it Yes this encapsulates the feeling I (we?) have right now
This is a great version - doesn't add too much and also brings a fresh drive to it! Kudos on reshaping something in a way where it doesn't trigger the "how dare you" feels - I can't even decide which version I like the most :) as others mentioned, this brings tears to my eyes.
Well it will be, in a sense. As mentioned in my description, a new title is being developed by Stardock, and while it is not going to be a remake or sequel, it's been suggested that it will be more of a reboot taking place in an alternate timeline, detailing the "origin story" of humanity making first contact with other spacefaring species and joining them to fight for their mutual freedom. I'd say it'll be sort of a hybrid of Star Control 1 & 2. The characters and events will be different as Stardock does not want to mess with Paul Reiche's canon for a number of reasons.
Man I have commented on the Precursors Project with their great music... This is wow!! LOVE IT!!! All the essence and excitement with the original just a touch modern feel! That is one thing I always love about Star Control series, such memorial music! This preserves the original music with a snappy clean modern finishing touch!!!!!
The music was played by using PC-speaker Pulse Width Modulation by rapidly modulating PC speaker 1-bit DAC as it could be quite rapidly addressed in 80286/80386 systems of the time.
Bro! You did it.. you made me 11 years old again.. if only for a second.. This was the only game I played as a kid where I didn't hear screams to "turn it down" as a kid.. simply the best sound track ever.
I love that you picked that picture of Fwiffo. I made it thinking the Spathi ships should be as colorful inside as they are outside. I think they'd be afraid of a dark ship because, well, they're the Spathi.
This is awesome, I played SC2 for many hours as a kid, one of the best games of all time. This brings me back, I like the remix of the remix, since about 10 years after the game the Precursors remix finally came out. Thanks again. (Never played the new game yet either)
Mieke Bergmann Both the original and this version are not MIDI-based, although if I had the right equipment I'd certainly love to do a MIDI rendition. MIDI can be fantastic the right hardware but it's prohibitively expensive for hobbyists and has some limitations as far as how much the sound can be directly manipulated. Music modules with digital sound sampling allow an almost endless variety of instrumentation and simple effects without the need for extra hardware!
anamnesis I could swear that my old Dos copy had Midi synthetiser (even when sound card was set sound blaster, or maybe even SB Pro)....And assuming it was 92'...what else could it be? But then again it's a looong time...
Mieke Bergmann Nope, no MIDI synthesizer. All digitized audio, which in 1992 was rather innovative compared to MIDI which was very common. It's part of the reason SC2's music was so unique because it allowed sounds that couldn't be reproduced in MIDI. You may be remembering the old .MOD files which of course were very similar in spelling to a .MID file. =)
Listening to this jam every time it pops up. Game's been long before my time and as such I'm used to more modern games. This game is the oldest game I can wholeheartedly like.
I heard this on the Lemmings ost. It was released the year before this game originally. Blondie's One Way or Another is the core of this track maybe you'll find it amusing
I normaly don't like remixes and much rather listen to the originals. This is a rare exception that i actualy feel it's close enough to the original, while adding a little "je ne sais quoi" for the extra push. Still like the original a little better, probably for nostalgia feelings, but this one is rather good aswell. Thanks for the effort to make this amazing game still a little alive.
Can you imagine if one day humanity did achieve some sort of FTL/wormhole/hyperspace travel and if as soon as the starship entered the warped space this music started blaring out of the speakers?
Hard as it might be to believe, that canonical sequel is actually coming. I know I'm years late to reply, but hey, what's a few years when you've been waiting 30? 😄
This game was just so far ahead of it's time. It's influence can still be felt in games like Mass Effect. I hope Stardock does the franchise justice. I've been waiting for a new Star Con game for so long.
Me too, brother. Mass Effect commonly gets mentioned as a spiritual successor to Star Control, though it was lacking the pulp-influenced levity and humor. I think the franchise is in very capable hands with Stardock. Their entry into the franchise will be an altered interpretation of the story with new lore and different alien species, but I encourage fans to not lose heart and try to keep in mind that it will be a completely fresh adventure with new discoveries to be made. I know they also have a few talented and funny writers on board to flesh out the personalities and conversational dialogs with aliens. I also suggest that fans join in the conversation on Stardock's community forum as the game develops and have their say! Brad Wardell is a common fixture on the forums and posts regularly under the username Frogboy. He recently has alluded to the fact that their ambition is to work DLC expansions into the framework of the game to allow for new chapters of the story to be added as time goes on, presumably with new quests, alien species, and technological discoveries. There isn't much on the Stardock forums currently as they've yet to really announce official specifics about the title, but I know the development team is keenly aware of the elements that need to come together to make the title work in a way that does Paul and Fred's story justice for a new generation of gamers.
Mass Effect Might have been influenced by Star Control, but almost all of the aliens seem too human to be- well true aliens. For gods sakes almost all of the aliens in mass effect are bipedal and humanoid.
Jones NotReal That's what I loved about Star Control. The aliens felt real, like they were alien enough in both design and motives to be more than the slightly different humans so many other games and series have. The whole Spathi being utter cowards was really exciting because it was a completely different mindset than any other race I've seen.
Yeah, the Orz are basically the alien among the aliens. Your computer isn't able to accurately decipher it due to its "UNUSUAL COMPOSITION" they somehow *pulled* the Androsynth from Truespace to where ever the Orz come from, and the developers original plan was that when you were to bring Orz ships into Quasi Space, very strange and eerie things were supposed to happen, this got scrapped of course cause you can bring Orz ships through Quasi Space no problem. Then there is *smell* which I guess is probably a mish-mash of hearing, seeing and regular scent ,cept you can use it across dimensions.
Those two happen to be my favorite alien themes (also by Riku Nuottajärvi) and if I were to pick any others to do a modernization of, they would definitely be next in line. Perhaps one day I will get around to them.
anamnesis Glad to hear even a maybe. I've heard a couple remastered versions of these songs (particularly the soundtrack that comes with the 'uqm' package in Ubuntu) but, despite having better instruments, they feel a bit inferior--overwrought with additional "spacey" sound effects that do not really fit the underlying melody. But what you've done here just nailed it, starting from that first opening crescendo. It's weird how incredibly nostalgic this makes me, given I played it for the first time just a couple years ago (I know I know, no idea how I missed it the first time around. Fortunately, the Wii version I found happened to have the non-souped up soundtrack.) The sign of a true classic, I suppose.
I agree about UQM. I didn't want to say anything bad in my video description, but this was one of the reasons I wanted to create a remastered version that was faithful to the original DOS music. It's interesting to note that Riku Nuottajärvi was actually involved in the UQM music production on the "Precursors" team, and I have it on good authority that he is in fact going to be contributing music to the new title. I wish they hadn't taken so many liberties in changing the overall sound of the music in UQM though. I figured they'd do what I did here, giving the original DOS music a modern sound, but that wasn't the case. I didn't care for all the added sound processing either. It didn't really enhance the sound but rather detracted from it. The UQM Hyperspace remake in particular seemed to put the orchestral melody into the background of the piece, while bringing the percussion into the foreground. I enhanced the orchestral line in this updated version for that reason.
***** Indeed there were. As stated in the description, the original arrangement of the MOD has essentially been preserved, but all of the remastering, drum work and effects were performed in Renoise.
Sorry for the very late reply, I'm not a great TH-camr. This was actually done in Renoise and I don't believe any samples were attributable to Ableton.
Still one of the best remixes. No offense to the author but but this is better than his version of the remix. The only thing that is missing is the red spermatozoidz flying in hyperspace
Just announced a TRUE sequel is being worked on! Years ago i emailed Paul Reich III about a sequel he liked some of my ideas, i cannot believe this finally happening! !! Mark 2 where are you??
When it suddenly hits you that 2014 was 8 years ago. And 1992 was 30 years ago. And somehow you got old...😭
One of the greatest games ever made, hands down.
And the entire original games was only something like 16MB.
This is now 10 years old.
_Damn._
I can't believe it either. 👀
Bro, this is a true masterpiece. If you did this yourself, than I still wait for other remixes. This is so awesome that I can't even describe how...
Thanks for the kind comments. I always had a desire to make other remixes, but I just don't get around to music production anymore these days.
I throw this on sometimes when I'm flying around in Elite:Dangerous. So perfect.
Maybe a millennium in the future, if we ever do break the speed of light, someone will play this theme in the first space ship to cross the stars.

phuturephunk Me too!
+phuturephunk Playing Elite: Dangerous and threw this tune on. Didn't even see this comment until afterwards. o7
This is great, not to far off from the original but modern. I miss games of this caliber.
Thank you. I miss them too, as you can probably tell!
Brings tears to my eyes... the emotion, the memories of playing this incredible game as a kid... thank you.
I found this after the Children of Infinity announcement. I hope that sends more people to this song!
Thanks, I'm confident there will be many folks rediscovering this franchise over the next year. 🙂
The sc2 music was crowd sourced iirc and this track is a remix of another game (lemmings) ost doing a cover of One Way or Another by Blondie. It's in the beat all through once you hear it
Yes this encapsulates the feeling I (we?) have right now
I remember loving to travel far distances in hyperspace just to hear longer portions of this song. :D
This game caused me to greatly expand my perception of time and see how ancient events can have tremendous effects on modern events.
30 years and I can still hum it flawlessly in my sleep hehe.
This is a great version - doesn't add too much and also brings a fresh drive to it! Kudos on reshaping something in a way where it doesn't trigger the "how dare you" feels - I can't even decide which version I like the most :) as others mentioned, this brings tears to my eyes.
God I wish they'd remake this epic game

anamnesis Wait, hold on, can I get a link for this?
Vermoin arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/01/stardock-ceo-reveals-details-about-new-star-control-title-in-development/
anamnesis Oh sweet, that is kind of re assuring.
RET80
best game ever
Still really good… haven’t listened to it in 2 months!!!
I've been listening to this track for decades, and must have heard a dozen remixes of it, and this is by far my favorite. Bravo!
The music was played by using PC-speaker Pulse Width Modulation by rapidly modulating PC speaker 1-bit DAC as it could be quite rapidly addressed in 80286/80386 systems of the time.
and it sounded f'kin great. even better than sound blaster 16 of the time...
Damn straight it did. I kept my ear close to the speaker when the ship was on autopilot. :-)
Bro! You did it.. you made me 11 years old again.. if only for a second..
This was the only game I played as a kid where I didn't hear screams to "turn it down" as a kid.. simply the best sound track ever.
This is fucking amazing, thank you for sharing it, or how the Spathi's Safe Ones would say... "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
My happy place. It hyperspace will ever be a thing, this will be my travel music.
This is fantastic. Thank you!
I love that you picked that picture of Fwiffo. I made it thinking the Spathi ships should be as colorful inside as they are outside. I think they'd be afraid of a dark ship because, well, they're the Spathi.
Listening to this jam every time I start a trip. Car, bus, plane, train, you name it.
hearing this makes me so happy
We come in peace.
Nice! Just hearing takes me back quite a bit, over the hours flying around hyperspace trying to dodge sylandro probes.
Chris Hiatt haha! And remember once you had a powerful ship you would actually go around hunting those probes!
Nostalgic! My first PC game.
0:45 - touches the soul of an old SC2 tragic. Well done. :)
This is glorious. Thank you for this.
Like 2 weeks later popped up in my recommendations… still good
This is awesome, I played SC2 for many hours as a kid, one of the best games of all time. This brings me back, I like the remix of the remix, since about 10 years after the game the Precursors remix finally came out. Thanks again. (Never played the new game yet either)
Lightyears away! :D
Great remix of one of my favorite songs from a classic game.
Still going strong I see. Good job!
This is awesome mate. Love it.
awesome game and music
Such a great game and what an experience.
Too good... so so too good... I'm getting emotional here.
Beautiful video ! GOOD MUSIC!
This is great for rolling polyhedrals while RPG tabletop gaming.
if they are going to make a remake of this, they better have this in it
This ought to be put into the Ur-Quan masters HD pack...
Long live the MIDI (hehe, I know it's not it anymore, but still it sounds much like actual one)...:)
Mieke Bergmann Both the original and this version are not MIDI-based, although if I had the right equipment I'd certainly love to do a MIDI rendition. All aboard! Mark II is not returning till the next turn of the galaxy. Every crew member should have personal talking pet and a rubber Syreen doll.
Yes! I feel like I can journey among the stars, in my Precursor vessel and armada of allies. Thank you!
as a personal fan from the original game, thank you for this, this is beautiful man
WoW! Nice remix. I'm from Nasca Z-2389, Orion NGC 1976. 1350 light years away :)
anamnesis, dude, you rock big time!
I like the downwards wail at 1:17 :D
Listening to this jam every time it pops up.
Game's been long before my time and as such I'm used to more modern games. This game is the oldest game I can wholeheartedly like.
thanks, more good things are on the way ... subscribe to Pistol Shrimp Games 😉
I heard this on the Lemmings ost. It was released the year before this game originally.
Blondie's One Way or Another is the core of this track maybe you'll find it amusing
SC2 is still my favorite 4x game of all time. This theme i want to have played on my funeral!
We are so back.
Anyone else hear The Syreen calling in this?
WOAH! I'M BLOWN!
awesome!
This sounds great; I hope they ask you to contribute some music for UQM2 :).
Not betting on it, but thank you. I would die of shock if that happened!
WHY DO YOU ONLY HAVE 94 SUBS
Edit: yay i made it 95
probably because I'm not much of a "content creator" 😂 cheers 🍻
Every time I listen to this track, I imagine the crew dancing while flying through hyperspace.
Perfect
Nice remix, btw, I used to do one back in 2002 as well. :)
This music goes beautifully with No Man's Sky.
NICE!!!! SC2 the best game ever!! LOVE EVERY HYPERSPACE REMIX!! THIS ONE IS AWESOME!
Aetherially uplifting...
Im listening to this and I feel like an Slylandro is going to enter combat in any moment xDD
Can you imagine if one day humanity did achieve some sort of
FTL/wormhole/hyperspace travel and if as soon as the starship entered the
warped space this music started blaring out of the speakers?
Superb remix!!! Actually trying to make another remix of it myself. Hasn't been easy yet.
Star Control Origins is out, I completed it but still SC2 was much more fun. I crave for a canonic sequel.
Hard as it might be to believe, that canonical sequel is actually coming. I know I'm years late to reply, but hey, what's a few years when you've been waiting 30? 😄

best game music ever by far!
mmmmmmm dat music
I would love if they remade the game with modern graphics but the same controls
Please remake the Human starbase theme, that one was tripping!
Nice! Any chance you could do the Yehat and/or Mycon themes?
Those two happen to be my favorite alien themes (also by Riku Nuottajärvi) and if I were to pick any others to do a modernization of, they would definitely be next in line. Perhaps one day I will get around to them.

I like that I recognize those drum samples. Did you happen to make it in ableton by any chance?
Sorry for the very late reply, I'm not a great TH-camr. This was actually done in Renoise and I don't believe any samples were attributable to Ableton.
When the Games were Great!
Hhhhhhhhiiiiiippppppeeeeeeeerrrr space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
wow is beautiful n.n
Hmm, It seems I have stumbled upon a precursor artifact of old.
Still one of the best remixes. No offense to the author but but this is better than his version of the remix.
The only thing that is missing is the red spermatozoidz flying in hyperspace
15 Druuge disapproved...
Long shot but here goes - @anamnesis - can you contact me - I'd like to license your song.
It's not mine to license.
Just listening to this until Origins comes out.
Just announced a TRUE sequel is being worked on! Years ago i emailed Paul Reich III about a sequel he liked some of my ideas, i cannot believe this finally happening! !! Mark 2 where are you??
