The best summer of my life was going to my buddy's place and playing this game on his computer.

Never could figure out why anyone used the Chmmr against the Sa-Matra. A single Arilou Skiff and a single Pkunk Fury (and I haven't played in years yet still remember the names) is all you need, as the Pkunk can outrun any of the guided plasma or 'bouncers', while the Arilou can simply teleport clear. I've done runs where I've lost only a single ship to the Sa-Matra (simply because you can't do an escape warp).
Right, you only need a Pkunk ship. The Chmmr is sort of the brute force method but it's not only less elegant, but I would argue less fun.
Earth Cruisers could DECIMATE the Kohr-ah vessels. Simply run away at full speed, and keep flipping around to launch missiles while letting inertia carry you. The point defense worked great against Ur-Quan fighters, too.
Who says you know what ships will be good against it? Everyone knows NOW, but the game tells you a bunch of avatars should be sufficient...
The DOS version outright gave you a bunch of pkunk furies though, making it pretty obviously the right ship once you've fought it at least once
I always thought it was cool how the saviors of the galaxy were the Pkunk. You meet them first, they are this kinda trash race of rejected Yehat. But their ships are by far the best at defeating the sa-matra. Anyways, that was the head canon for me.
Eh, just set yourself up with a single utwig jugger and you don't even need the escape warp. The plasma and bouncers stop spawning once the shield is down, and the jugger has the durability and firepower to kill them off efficiently, so you can totally get zero losses.

You need to get the Yeehat in the war on time, they show up at the Sumatra - best ship to take it out.
The Shield's stop the stupid bubble things and the rapid-fire knocks the defenses out quick

You're doing it wrong. You win the final battle with the Thraddash. It's firey thrusters kills of Ur-Quan fighters, and when you use it near the planet, the capital ships have too much momentum to avoid it.
How do you get Thraddash to join?
You have to repeatedly fight them to gain their respect. Eventually they come around, and you'll be able to build them. I think this is rather crucial, because you'll be instrumental in getting the tradash and the Illwrath to destroy one another, giving you access to the Chmmr
Yeah. Procyron I basically has the Ilwrath's homeworld defenses if you don't distract them.
Thraddash is the OP ship.
Utwig should clean all six Urquan vessels. Or bring something else (your flagship is very good too).
Last mission is all about the Pkunk. I’m surprised you did it with Chmmr.
I remember final boss being much harder. only way was with Pkunk
with Lucky regeneration ;p

If you use hacks, are you able to outrun the Sa-Matra with the probe?
In case you are still wondering. The Slylandro probe is able to outrun those fireballs. However, since there are no meteorites in the Sa-Matra battle, you cant recharge your batteries.

Unless there's any weapon on it besides a short-ranged laser and some drones, the Chmmr vessels seem kinda...not very effective against Ur-Quan vessels in general.
The drones act as point defense and the main laser is really deadly. But yeah, you actually are better off with spathi or something faster.
It at least looks like it fares well against ye olde "LAUNCH FIGHTERS" ships if played well, but throwing it at kohr-ah looks to be suicidal.
Yeah.. Tractor beam isn't great at Kohr-ah, and the fighters may get in range before point-defense zaps it out if launched at lcose range.
A decent spathi pilot or utwig jugger pilot should be able to take out all 6 urquan ships with no problem. Pkunk to take out the shield generators.

Just so you know: The Pkunk ship is the best for killing the Sa-Matra
I actually prefer the Spathi, if you can keep any alive long enough
@@hagamapama yeah, they work, too. So do Utwig ships, but Pkunk are the best, which is funny because they suck against most anything else. :)
Pkunk and Utwig for me. Pkunk are better, but you can't buy them so I round out my force with Utwig and just grab what Pkunk I can following the revolution and them coming to my aid. Yehat last only a handful of seconds during the final fight so pretty useless.
In terms of time spent, the Pkunk are actually one of the worst. Shofixti can blow up 2 shield generators in one kamikaze attack. And any hostile orbs that are near go with it. In less than 2 minutes you'll have defeated the Sa-Matra.

the sa-matra at least should be m u c h way bigger than that,the oficial wikis sayed that the sa-matra was big as a gas giant

Would've been a lot easier to beat the Sa-matra if you had a single Pkunk star fury (wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Fury). The game even makes a couple of hints about it.
True. Just fly the ship past the force shields using your side cannons to take them out. If you get hit, try to resurrect (hit fire and special at the same time, only works some of the time.)
what a waste of ship resource! unless you just want to prolong the battle. The ship of choice should be your flagship which should be armed with at least 2 -3 hellbore cannon and homing modules. two frontal shots is all needed to destroy the urquan and koh ah ship
You cant do the final battle that way, most of your slots are hung up on a gigantic bomb. Thats why you have the fleet.
@@TheRotnflesh Not saying you shouldn't use your fleet, but i did my final battle with mostly the flagship. Even with the reduced slots, there is still enough slots for at least two hellbore frontal cannons and the homing modules.
This is by far the worst Star Control player in existence.

Loved this game as a kid..Maybe I'm overthinking it, but there's something vaguely racist about the names of the evil races, and their phonetic similarity to the Qur-an. Ur-quan, Korah.. c'mon lol.
Well, the Ur-Quan aren't pure evil. The reason they do what they do is that long ago, they got mind-controlled into slaughtering all their friends and had to subject themselves to constant excruciating pain to throw off the mind-control and destroy their tormentors. They do what they do so that they may never be enslaved again. They don't want to give anyone the chance to take advantage of them. The Kzer-Za even believe that the other races are better off, because the Kzer-Za actually do provide for them and protect them from the horrors of the galaxy. The Kohr-Ah have less of an excuse, given that they try to slaughter everyone else, but they believe in reincarnation and it's implied that they want everyone to be reborn as Ur-Quan so that everyone can be one race, The-Unity-From-Fallout-1-style. Also, nothing about them beyond their names is Islam-themed at all, and the game came out long before 9-11. Thus, this wall of text would seem to suggest that you are overthinking it, lol.
Impressive knowledge of SC alien races. You're right, probably overthinking it. I was more commenting on the phonetic characteristic of the 'evil' races being uncommon in English, and more Arabic sounding in nature.
Thing is, the Ur-Quan don't come off that bad compared to some of the other races in the game - looking at you, Ilwrath/Druuge/Umgah/ESPECIALLY Dnyarri/ESPECIALLY Orz. They're just the main antagonists and have the most galactic presence.

The "Ur" is supposed to be Sumerian to imply how ancient the Ur Quans are. "Kor" and "Ah" seem to be Hebrew words. You could consider it cultural appropriation but its all in good spirit imo.
