Thanks again Allan for the loan of another cracker. That is quite the collection you have there. I really like this one, and it has made me go back to the quartz with fresh eyes as well. Not a watch that slaps you in the face with a wet fish, so if that is your thing, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a 70s style, Gentaesque sports watch form a great brand with a crackign movement, and all the right specs that'll last forever, then go for it. Cheers, Jody

Hi Jody, the lift angle for powermatic is 47 degrees, the case back is friction and not screw-on and the rate can be adjusted by every skilled watchmaker by adjusting the two eccentric weights on the balance arms.
    I adjusted mine to +4 sec/day!
Balance hair spring is antimagnetic Nivachron! Escape wheel and pallet fork are made from synthetic material (non metallic) and therefore antimagnetic as well!

Such a great decision to bring this one back by Tissot. I've always found their modern designs a bit plain but this one has a nice bit of 70's charm to it. A bit large for my 16cm wrist but with how popular integrated bracelet pieces are these days it's no wonder these things are selling like hot cakes.

I picked up the blue dialed quartz version from a jeweller's in person back in late September '21. They actually offered me the choice of the smaller box like this, or the "fancy" one with the little book on Tissot's history + the catalogue. (Of course, I picked the fancy one)

Glad you enjoyed it Jody. Just a note, I popped an extra couple of links in for Jody. My wrist is 6.7inch. Definitely can be worn on a smaller wrist for anyone considering.
It's not a daily wear for me. It's just something a little different for the occasional wear.

I recently purchased the PRX automatic blue dial on the leather strap and have to say that it’s a stunning watch for the money. If Tissot ever added an AP style bezel to this watch then it would take it to another level.

I imported mine from the US to Ireland back in the summer and it came with a more standard Tissot box. I adore my blue dial auto and it honestly gets the most wear time out of all my watches. It’s very close to perfect imo.

Hi Jody, great review as always. Got my blue PRX Powermatic in July '21 and to me it is a great addition to the collection as a rather inexpensive GADA watch. Do not mind to wear it every day, as it reminds me of the Girard-Perregaux Quartz from 1974, which I inhereted from my father. The latter is by no means a daily wearer any longer, as GP let me know that they cannot fix it anymore in case it breaks. So am glad that Tissot made a stunning watch with great specs at a reasonable price. My only complaint is that the bracelet scratches by far quicker than any other steel bracelet in my watch collection. Oh, before I forget: Got my watch in the full size Tissot box with the microfibre cloth, booklets, etc...

  • @MikeRenzulli

I had the opportunity to look at this watch at a watch dealer the other day and it is beautiful! I agree as you seem to imply that the second hand is hard to see depending on the glare of the dial. Lorier has a very nice blue dial tool watch named the Falcon with a waffle dial that is nice too, but Tissot's has something about it that gives their watch an edge. I also think the case design is something that should have not ever been discontinued from use. What I like about Swatch Group is that they own a number of watch manufacturers that make time pieces to appeal to a variety of customer income levels.

This is the first mechanical watch I’ve ever bought for myself and I couldn’t be happier. Especially since I feel I got a pretty good deal on it at 500 bucks. Looks great on my 8 inch wrist. But I could see it wearing a bit big if you had a smaller size wrist.

A great review Jodi! I was pondering the 2021 PRX when it was first released as that classic design from decades ago would be put into production again. I was tempted by the quartz given the price but when the automatic was announced I wasn't sure about the waffle dial preferring the flat sunburst of the quartz. After a visit to the AD I had a chance to have a butchers at both, I walked out with the auto with the blue dial. In the flesh that waffle dial really works so well. A little bit of something else going on with the light play to distract you from actually telling the time. I've a few Tissot watches and I find them a great honest watches, well finished and accurate for the price. Certainly my PRX gets a lot more wrist time that I would have thought. The packaging on mine was nothing like the box that you had. It was exactly the same as my other Tissot boxes.

I got this exact watch (black dial) back in December, and it's a fantastic watch for the money. The new 35mm will be quite interesting, it should help out a lot of people who were sized out by the long lug to lug. Also, I got the same packaging, and if you already have a watchbox then it doesn't really matter, but if I had to store the watch in it's original box, I would have much preferred the old box.

Another great review Jodi, and I definitely agree with your comments on Tissot's value. I'd even go so far as to say that with this and the Gentleman, Tissot now basically owns the US$500-1000 GADA Category, for people looking for just one nice watch, that won't possibly destroy them financially (the quartz models also make great gifts).

I picked up the quartz version a couple of weeks ago, absolutely love it, even though it is not auto it's still is a great watch. (My one came in the packaging shown in this video), only complaint about the prx in general is that the bracelet is an absolute scratch magnet, so if you're like me and like your watches to be immaculate even after light use, this watch may not be for you, another suggestion is to buy a second bracelet, have one that is perfect and un-scratched, and then one that has wear and tear, as the bracelet is on quick release spring bars.

When I saw the quartz I was itching for the auto to turn up then I saw that dial. Pity you can't get a dial similar to the quartz. Bought a Certina instead. Interesting to see the powermatic 80 on the timegrapher, it would be interesting to see what it does in normal use. Mine says -4s on the timegrapher, dial up but I have been wearing it for five weeks now uncorrected and it was +1s this morning.

I picked up my blue auto about 4 months ago. Not my daily wearer but that’s only because I have far too many watches to wear just one piece daily. That said, I do love it but wish, wish, wish Tissot had thought about strap options - especially with a quick-release bracelet. I went ahead and ordered some custom leather straps from Delugs. Not in yet but I’m looking forward to their arrival! Great review Jody, albeit a little late! Love you and the channel anyway!

Tissot was my first stepping stone Into Swiss mechanical watches and I think it's when my love affair with watches started, I was getting suited up for a job interview, as an electrical apprentice, I already had a suit and was comfortable wearing it as I went to a school with a strict uniform policy, so when I suited up, it was practically my school uniform but with a different blazer, I instinctively just put on my old beat up Casio, A version of the F91w, my Dad saw it and said something of the line "are you gonna wear that watch with a suit. No no no, that won't do" He disappeared for about 10 minutes and came back with his Tissot Seaster Seven with the day window in 9ct gold with a red-brown crocodile skin leather strap, it was over 30 years old but look brand new. Even at the job interview the interviewer at the end said of a fairly quick interview: "nice watch", I took it off for him to look at and spent the next 15 minutes talking about watches. I got the apprenticeship in the end. Did the Tissot help? Don't know, it certainly made an impression with the interviewer. My first automatic about 6 years later was a 41mm pepsi dialled Tissot. I don't know if the brand is good or not, but the two I have are among my favourite watches.

Jody, I totally agree. -10 sec. A day? No, not acceptable. I would go for the quartz too. If you have to bring this one in for a service, it will probably cost an arm an a leg. No the quartz is cheaper and better,. It looks the same, with the same prestige of the Swiss brand name.

  • @williamb8764
    @williamb8764 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Hi Jody, here’s my experience with the PRX.
I bought one of these last September, didn’t do it for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great watch and the case size was ok for me (8 inch wrists, that helps) but the bracelet was very thin and didn’t feel very solid which had me worried about it on the long term, and that was a massive no-no for me on a watch with an integrated bracelet as you’re basically stuck with it.
The lume was also disappointing and the white date wheel on the dark blue and black dial wasn’t a good choice imho, I also never managed to really bond emotionally with the watch, it just didn’t do it for me.
Maybe I’m a bit nitpicking but those were the reason why I didn’t keep it.
Despite my opinion, I can’t argue with the top notch finishing and quality of the movement which is simply one of the best on the market. It’s a great watch, but it wasn’t for me.
Overall I’d say the Gentleman still is the best everyday watch from Tissot as far as I’m concerned, it’s more versatile and has the better movement.

This is my first Tissot and I absolutely adore this watch. The light play(as noted) is ridiculous and is so fun to have on my wrist. The only reason I don’t wear it more is because I don’t want it scratched to hell like most of my watches. Because the light play is so fun I’m worried that covered in scratches it would lose some of that. So the consequence is that I wear it to my office job less and it’s more of a weekend watch for me. Good news is I have a few more watches that I get to wear during the week!

Great review, Jodi. Every time I hear people laud this watch I tell myself to give it another chance
and I try to see it with fresh eyes. But I end up with the same shrug. Despite the 70's vibe (or perhaps because of it) it just seems less "classic" and just so neat, so tidy, so inoffensive as to be forgettable. That crown, as a case in point, just looks timid to me. And what seemed to be startling months ago (the integrated bracelet) now just seems like another (albeit one of the first) watches in a design trend. It's a "nice" watch quietly insisting that it's actually a Classic.

The Tissot PRX 35 millimeter blue dial is a reissue of the 1978 Tissot Seastar so I would choose that! The powermatic 80 Movement is Lazer regulated so it can be regularly maintained and repaired only by Tissot which is expensive and problematic and the quartz is more authentic and accurate!

Tissot have done something smart here, because for the gorgeous dial pattern is also part of the equation whether to choose a quartz or an auto. If I was also available on the quartz models the decision would be clear. But since it's a hallmark of the autos...I'm not so sure. But since I happen to own a Direnzo I'm out anyway. Nice review! 👍

The dial upgrade is hard to ignore for the auto. The waffle dial is visually more interesting than the sunburst and the date frame is key

To me its quite the opposite, the sunburst on the quartz is phenomenal.

Had the quartz, but the seconds hand would seldom hit its markers. This annoyance never went away & in the end I sold it.

I'd be tempted by the quartz if I was shopping for that style of watch. I used to scoff at quartz, but after picking up a Marathon Navigator I have come around to seeing the value in a quartz analogue watch.

Great review, nice macro on the dial. The only thing I don't like is the movement, -10 isn't too bad, but I have all my Vostok running a little better, and if you get one almost out of spec, a watchmaker can't adjust it. Is the Powermatic 80 serviceable?

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is serviceable, although it's a pain to regulate, as it doesn't have a traditional regulator. A trained watchmaker/jeweller should still be able to adjust it using the screws on the balance wheel, but it's not the theoretically-at-home adjustment a traditional regulator would allow.
I suppose the good news is that -10s/day is probably the worst rate I've heard of the Powermatic 80; if the forums and YT comments are to be believed, most seem to run around 5-10s/day fast, which is much better.

Lovely watch. With my ever so slight Nickel allergy, I'm not sure how much I'm going to spend on steel watches moving forward. Whenever I've worn a steel watch for 2 weeks or so, I need to "detox" with one of my Titanium watches - currently either the Tissot T-Touch II Titanium or my Citizen BM8560-11X field watch. I guess there will always be bund straps.

Yep, I’ve had a couple of Tissot’s in my life. Pretty good watches. The T-Touch is a little weak (needs surfacing often, and it can cost more than the watch). But, overall, nice watches.

I like Field watches for every day use in Summer and Diver models in Winter. I work outside most of the time take them off for abusive work but overall enjoy the gizmo of my Automatic or Windup watches. Quartz have no character but my painting, drywall, dusty place watch is a Casio Quartz or Citizen they never let me down. Anyway dress watch should be Gizmo not reliable. Something to play with during those boring meetings...

Hey everyone! Over the years I handled about 5 PRX, quartz and automatic. I currently own a blue automatic. Overall I like the look and size of the watch. But honestly I think it’s overpriced. The finishing on the case is good (some angles/chamfers don’t line up perfectly) but the bracelet is a shame for the swatch group… The polished parts of the bracelet are uneven and wonky. Some are straight, some not. It’s like someone (in china) just pushed it against a polishing machine during their break with one hand holding the bracelet and the other hand holding a sandwich… I don’t just want to rant, but I’m disappointed by the PRX… All of the watches I handled had the same issues more or less. I think the price for the quartz version is okay, it’s nevertheless a Swiss watch. But the automatic version is overpriced because they use the same case and bracelet from the cheaper version and slap a automatic movement inside that might only cost a few bucks more. The price difference is not justified in my opinion. Some of the watches I handled had dust under the dial. My current version has a scratch on the rehaut where the date wheel is. 80 hours of power reserve is impressive, but it comes with a price. I rather would have a 4hz movement and “only” ~40 hours of power reserve. For me it feels like a Ferrari with a range of 1.000 miles of range (because inside is a 3 cylinder 1.0 liter engine…). In my honest opinion: Just by the quartz model, because you get nearly the same watch (even thinner than auto) and you safe a lot of money! 👋 - Daniel

yeah I definitely agree, I own a blue quartz and it is a very nice watch to where daily, although the bracelet is a scratch magnet, even when only wearing it from day to day activities.

I hesitated to buy this or the ergon adventum-ss-teal and then I opted in for the Ergon and I think I made a good decision. This prx looks great, but the ergon dial is stunning. Ergon finishing is way classier than price tag of 329 usd would predict.

Nice vid, Jody! One thing I wonder about on this one: how’s the hand finishing? Also, I own a couple of watches with no lume, but because of the hand finishing they’re still pretty readable in low light conditions (urban night time). Ever thought about introducing that to a video? Not sure how that would work on camera compared to the eye…
