Spain's major role in world affairs took place much prior in history (beginning in the 15th/16th centuries), so by recent years and decades, the country's time as a global player had effectively passed. Spain's true and definitive demise came in the year 1898, when it fought a major war against the United States over Cuba. As you can imagine, the US was victorious in that conflict; and the War of Cuba, as it is known here, left a deep scar in Spain's politics and culture. It was the clearest sign that Spain's major role in world affairs was no more, as it was a harsh defeat, so it began a period of introspection mainly dictated by changes in its society that would culminate in the 1936 - 1939 Civil War.
Not to say that Spain didn't have anymore role from 1898 onwards, as it had a brief colonial period in northern Africa; but it was surely greatly diminished from what it used to be. In fact, one of the reasons the Spanish didn't consider intervening in the First World War was that the War of Cuba had left the Spanish Navy extremely damaged, so it had no many means to even thinking of joining. And we could say we are fortunate, because considering that both the Spanish political elite and society were mainly consevative, there is a great chance we would have joined the Central Powers, the losing side, so we avoided that.
In the case of the Second World War, the story is pretty much the same, as the country couldn't think of joining the conflict because of the recent Civil War it had been fighting, which ended on the very year the World War began. In fact, although the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, partially owed its position to Hitler and Mussolini, he nevertheless made as much as possible to hinder German efforts of making Madrid to join the war after that, as the country was devastated.
Finally, in regards to the Cold War, Spain was lucky in the sense that, because of its geography, it was relatively isolated from central Europe, where the Iron Curtain was located, so the tensions of that era were not felt that much. The country did however aligned with the US, and granted them access to set military outpost in different parts of the country (which still stand today), in exchange of international recognition of the dictatorship and monetary support.
Interestingly, it happened that, very close in time, the Portuguese, Spanish, and Greek dictatorships fell and the three countries transitioned to democracy and entered the EU and NATO at almost the same time.

They will just horde it and it will not trickle down to where it's needed. You have to invest in Africa's people, in other worlds buy African goods, perches from African industries and markets."
What Spain is doing here, investing in trade with Africa; if executed properly, could lift billions of Africans out of poverty and make Spain very wealthy again at the same time. This time the right way. Not with swords, cannons and ships, but with paper, pens and dollars.

Good video, just one comment. You seem to make Spain sound like an unwilling or unenthusiastic member of the EU, when in fact Spain is one of the most pro-European countries in the EU. And when you speak about the EU restricting Spain’s spending capabilities and access to funding, I’m not really sure what you mean there, before Spain entered the eurozone the government could mostly only finance itself though printing money because the Peseta was very volatile, and the market had little to no confidence in Spanish public finances.
So basically, Spain's economic problems are self made and if Spain hadn't entered the EU and Eurozone the country would be much worse off.
P.S. Our dear leader Pedro Sánchez loves to do these grand futuristic plans, puts up a huge show and gets huge PR for a few days, but nothing ever comes of it. In Spain we call it Postureo.

I wish it worked that way. But no it's just soft imperialism. Corporations, global finance and the intelligence agencies have taken over the role of standing armies. For me to believe they actually just want to embrace trade with no funny business both parties have to be on equal footing but of course they're not. One party has the significant advantage and they will most likely take advantage of it. I really want there to be a solution for the migration problem because Africa is bleeding young and talented people.

The US has the largest clout within Africa I’m not sure what you mean by little influence, although China greatly spends much more on development schemes within the continent recent studies have shown that in 18 African nations most respondents placed the two nations on similar positions (afrobarometer.org/sites/default/files/africa-china_relations-3sept20.pdf), asked about their perceptions of the economic and political influence of various countries, 59 percent of African respondents viewed China somewhat, or very, positively and 15 percent viewed China somewhat or very negatively. The comparable numbers for the United States were similar: 58 percent and 13 percent. The same study reported that, when respondents in 18 African countries were asked to name the best national model for development, 32 percent cited the United States and 23 percent named China. With moderate American spending within the region the US influence can be greatly enhanced not to mention influence goes beyond just cash schemes, the affluent African middle class have been known to send their children to schools within both nations for education and with American universities ranking the highest within the world I’d argue this would be a clear success for America.

Both China and Russia aren't colonizing africa. Russia and China are here to do business in the continet. China is investing in the continet to build new infrastructures such as roads, schools, hospitals, railways and buildings.
Russia is here in the continent to do peacekeeping missions in conflict areas especially in the central african republic.
However both China and Russia are trading partners and closet friends.
During the european colonization of africa, the following that occurred on the continet was:
1.Partitioning of africa and creation of countries such as somalia, zambia, cameroon, namibia, angola, mozambique and so on.
      2.Establishment of colonies.
      3.Brutality and forced labor.
4.genocides,massacres and forced conversion of african people into christianity and catholicism.
5.Adoption of new technology and introduction of western culture.

I thought Spain was among the "PIIGS" quintet which were wrestling desperately against bankruptcy after the great 2008 real state crash. There was even a time, it was Angola, its ex colony , that used to bail it out, and now, according to that propaganda article praising europe once more, Spain is about to invest billions in a continent where some countries are economically and financially much more well off than even France and Germany. Africa doesn't need Europe and even less Spain, but the other way around is more than true. That's why all the old colonist masters are rushing to that continent, thinking they can enslave and plunder it, once more, under the nose of its rightful and genuine inhabitants ...

Spaniard here. I would mention that this plan is probably never going to happen. 1-The current government is incredibly incompetent and unpopular, and it will probably fall very soon. Spain usually changes its policy drastically whenever a new government comes up.
2-Spain's economy is looking bad in the medium term. Recent raises in taxes and other business unfriendly measures dont leave spanish companies in a very good state to go expanding abroad.
3-Exterior policy is very unpopular in democracies in general, and in Spain in particular. People just dont care. Without popular support, it is hard to do anything. You always get someone in parliament saying "you spend your time doing x thing abroad while y thing is happening here".
4-There are many who would say that Sánchez has been doing all these trips to take long vacations abroad disguising them as diplomatic trips. His flight logs are kept secret, which goes against the transparency laws, but he has been caught disguising trips to family weddings and concerts as official trips, taking the presidential plane.
5-As you say, Spain has had no real international impact in over a century. This is not the first big ambitious plan we come up with, but it would be the first one that turns into something real in the end. As an example of the state's incompetence in exterior policy, just look at the disaster of a crisis that is happening right now with Morocco, the cowardice of a government who doesnt even manage to say in clear terms that Ceuta and Melilla are sovereign spanish territory because they dont want to provoke the moroccan monarchy. This crisis by the way wont do any good to the whole idea of making friends in Africa.

Another Spaniard here. I read your comment and thought I would add some context and share a different take on current events:
1-The government might be unpopular for a big part of the country but definitely not for the majority of it. Plus, the current government is probably the only one capable of articulating a working majority in parliament, given that they are the only ones willing and able to succesfully negotiate with nationalist parties. After four elections in four years society is deeply divided and
2-This is true now but we are also going to be the one of the biggest recipients of New Generation EU funds. Plus, the economic outlook is changing for the better every week. Still, a long way to go.
3-I absolutely agree with this, but I also believe that as a result of the pandemic this has already started to change. There has been a constant interest in the world outside our borders for more than a year now, and I don't think that interest is going away anytime soon.
4-I will say I wasn't really aware of this but given the current political climate it can very well be speculation and bad propaganda.
5-I think the recent situation with Morocco proves the opposite. Even though they put real pressure on our immediate borders (in a very explicit and aggressive way, literally opening the border wall gates) the government gave a decisive response, gathered the support of the EU (it's their borders too), CLEARLY stated (again) that Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish territory and will be secured under any circumstances and still gave fair judicial treatment to the leader of the Polisario Front, let him leave when he was free to do so, all while not recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, even as they threatened to break diplomatic ties with us. Maybe comparing Morocco to the countries next to the EU borders on the east (yes I'm thinking about Turkey) is not fair, but still, I would say this is definitely a better handling of our neighbors than what we as Europe have been doing over there for a while.
To sum up, I think the government does have the capacity to handle exterior policy, they are going to get their hands on a lot of money in a context of extended growth and I believe they still have a couple more years in power, enough to at least set this African plan into motion.

It hasn't. Do take into account Spain taking Algeria's side against Morocco. And Spain has had crisis with morocco every fucking year since that kingdom exists. It was expected and if anything just another step in this very plan. As indeed thanks to it the tighter ties to Algeria are allowing multiple spanish businesses to gain a foothold in north africa, and against some impressive odds as it was predicted france would kick them out but after the french didn't take part on the issue they seemingly lost the bid.
Seems morocco overplayed its hand and spain handled it surprisingly well considering the fucking clownshow that is our government. Maybe it was just luck, either way it wasn't against the plan at all, quite the opposite.

@@thespanishinquisition4078 since you wrote an article I'm gonna showcase the problem with ur analogy.
If you think ignoring the problem is the way to go you gonna find yourself in a deeper hole.
You mentioned Algeria as an alie, the problem with Algeria its not a stable country for good investments. for the long run the state could go to revolution bcz of the uprising tentions against the government
2nd thing is that many countries tried to invest in Algeria but they failed bcz of how corrupt the system there and another major problem is the lacking of good infrastructure .
Now compared to morroco ther are so many countries that are racing to set a foot and invest in morroco bcz they know its one of the fastest growing economies in africa plus the good infrastructure and relationships with south african countries is a big boost to the growth of investments and there is an upcoming huge investment of a gas pipe line coming from nigeria to Europe connecting all west african countries that if morroco decided not to go through spain she is going to miss on a shit load of money and this is just few of the benefits that spain is going to miss on if she played hard to get .
There is quote that says why go to the right ear with your lift hand?
So Why go for Algeria instead of trying to fix the relationships with morroco ?

great piece, as always. you forgot to mention brazil's influence in some western african countries. in angola, for instance, brazil has had a monopoly of building infrastructure projects for the government for years. the large brazilian construction, agricultural and oil corporations have a long history of exploiting the african public contracts market and a longstanding relationship with their governments and brazilian governments as well.

@@gohanssj48 This is true. Brazil has lost a lot of influence in the past years there. Also, it is quite interesting to observe that the near-monopoly relations with Angola, for instance, have been forged between a right-wing military dictatorship and a communist military dictatorship back then.
What I referred above, though, is mainly about Brazil's large construction multinational companies, and their projects are ongoing in Latin-America, Africa, North-America, and even Asia. They do generally perform better when the Brazilian government does a better job at lobbying for them during international negotiations, but they are not entirely dependent on the government. So, it does not matter that much whether Brazil will put it's house in order soon or not, such companies are still highly engaged with businesses' partnerships elsewhere.
