Here’s the BMW iX - BMW’s first purpose-built, all-electric SUV!
So does the iX stand a chance against class leaders like the Tesla Model X or Audi e-tron? Well, it’s time to find out!
Starting with the exterior design, there’s no denying that it’s certainly striking! Sure, it doesn’t need the massive ‘grille’ upfront, but if anything it clearly helps it to stand out on the road. What’s more, the high-quality of the outside continues through to the inside, where you’ll find a minimalist design coupled with a load of tech.
The performance isn’t all that bad either! When it comes to the range-topping xDrive50 edition, it comes equipped with a 100kWh battery which is good for a claimed range of 373 miles. It also produces 500hp, and can hit 60mph in under five seconds!
So the question is - is it really worth the £95,000 starting price for the range-topping iX50? And should you consider it over a Model X? You’ll have to stick with Mat to find out!

This week I test drove both the 40 and 50. The acceleration in both is impressive. With the addition of air suspension the ride is much more comfortable in the 50 model. The design of the front seats makes the rear seats claustrophobic. Worth being aware that the rear windows only go down half way. The seats would benefit from better lumbar support. This can be overcome with the lumbar adjustment if fitted to the front seats. Be aware that due to a shortage of chips the lumbar adjustment is not currently available on the front passenger seat. The sunroof is frustratingly opaque when in the clear mode, hopefully this can be improved. The designers could have thought through better how this vehicle will be charged, for the charge sockets are in the location where one would typically put petrol or diesel. Near the front as with most PHEV vehicles would be better. They need to redesign to provide storage for the parcel shelf too. The current shelf appears like cheap plastic and not appropriate for a car of this price. The dashboard looks good but drivers may get annoyed when their passengers change the display when they want to adjust their seat heat. The performance and interior space are very impressive. The car is the size of the X5 yet has the boot space of the X3 so make sure it is sufficient for your need.

Hopefully it'll allow you to make adjustments while the vehicle is moving. It would really suck to have to pull over every single time you need to go into the menu.
Just bought one. Will be delivered next week Friday. Did a testdrive last week and I love the looks, the interior, the space and the luxury. Great driving. Comfort and power! Don’t like most of the pictures on the internet but visit the dealer and meet the car in real life. Imposing!
This applies to all new BMW designs. They look terrible on pictures at first glance, hence all the hate on the internet. But in person, they look way better and most people tend to get to like and prefer them actually. A shame those haters will never get to see or own a new BMW.

This has some truth to it. The auto industry moves incredibly SLOW. The design for the components of the car you see today could have been finalized 20 years ago.

It’s ok to change the looks of things, but in BMW’s case, I agree their cars are less aesthetically appealing. That’s not only compared with their old cars, but with other modern cars. Having said that, I totally understand how others may love it

Bmw current design language only caters for one demographic, the Chinese Market. Hence the major change to the 'kidney' grill as the Chinese Market absolutely loves hideous big f**koff grills.
Amazing features, beautiful interior, its almost like they benchmarked a Tesla before designing this car, then tried to improve on it. This bodes well for the future more affordable German vehicles.

regarding the complaint about the covers in the back , they do have a place to go. if you lift up the under-trunk storage where the cable is kept, there are slots for them to slide into, keeping them hidden away and out of the way. Also regarding the charging, you mention a 7kw wallbox, but you can use up to 11kw level2 charging. i have a 9.6kw charger for mine (40amp) and it charges plenty fast. i charge it 1-2 times per week. from 20-ish to 80%, if you need more speed than that, then you can get a 50amp charger to get 11kw out of it.

i honestly don't understand the dislike of the design. I absolutely love how it looks, and just bought one recently. It looks great outside, it looks great inside, and it drives great. it's an awesome vehicle. although, part of the reason mine looks so great is due to the "blue ridge mountain" color along with the titanium bronze trim package! great combination!

I hated it at first because of the exterior. But I am in love with it now. Complete redesign of everything, the engineering, the balance. Bmw deserves more credit. Bmw and audi leaders in electric class.
I took one out for a test drive today and really liked it. We own a 2016 and a 2019 X5 (both 5.0's) and the power of the iX feels faster. Smooth and quiet. Will wait for the 3rd generation most likely.

Actually, one drove into the car park of a pub we were having lunch at near Biggin Hill. It was black with black wheels and we both thought it was a modern hearse.
When bmw bought out the new 5 series… like the 2005 model shape, everyone thought it was ugly… now I think it’s a superb looking car, I think this will be similar

One has to go deep into several sub menus to change the fan speed or adjust the climate system. Brilliant to watch for dynamic familiar buttons to change the climate when one is driving in heavy traffic in 90 mph. Fantastic traffic safety thinking, Bmw! Thanks a lot!
Or, if you REALLY want to change anything on the car, you simply say: "Hey BMW - Set Fan Speed to 3" or "SET INTERIOR TEMP to 75 Degrees" - works great. Can control even the windows, seat massagers...everything has a voice control. Just ask.
maybe there was an update? because that definitely is not true today. the temperature is at the bottom of the home screen. and if you want to change fan speed for whatever reason, there's a climate button in the center of the bottom of the home screen. you click that and you have all the climate controls right there, 1 touch away. so, hurray for OTA updates perhaps. i do miss physical buttons, and hope manufacturers come back around to that, but if not, a single touch away should be what most things are.

You can get in really trouble by not puting front license plate in Poland (potential speed camera evasion etc.). I mean more than just a ticket. More then half of 3's and 4's I've seen on the road.

Please compare the IX to the X5 45e! That would be awesome.
Some things like climate control should have just normal analogue switches. Often weather conditions change during a journey and you don't want to programme a screen to demist.

Question: Would you get the same range going the reverse route? For range testing, you should probably start will full charge, do an uphill course, then follow it with a corresponding downhill course. This might give you a better average usage figure for range.
Over 223km, you'd need a pretty substantial elevation difference for it to really matter. Also there was a little bit of top speed testing involved in this route, so it's probably a fairly pessimistic figure.
They only have a limited amount of time with the vehicle for these press drives. They could spend all day doing a range test but then not have any time for the other segments. CarWow will likely do a more comprehensive range test when the car arrives in the UK.

BMW, MB are doing the same thing.. Chinese design language to sell more at their biggest marketplace, where owning one of those badges can be considered as a symbol of success, ridiculous cultural stuff in many Asian countries.

14:20 Did you notice how Mat had to look down at the touch switch on the centre console then up at the screen to change driving mode. It took him 4 glances down at the center console then a few seconds swiping away at the touch screen, yet it's illegal to touch your phone while driving!!!. Is this BMW's idea of safety?
Touch screen everything is a lawsuit waiting to happen, they are horrible and unsafe, but I guess it is cheaper to source a Chinese TouchPad and tablet rather than physically manufacture a button that has to feel good, have consistent gaps and reveals potential bad craftsmanship

@@unknownuser3736 you clearly either never drove a car or started driving recently.
When you have physical buttons and knobs you memorize where everything is and you can adjust everything without taking your eyes of the road, which makes it SAFE and easy.
With touch screens you have to LOOK at the screen and even at the pad area as you can't FEEL where the button is, making it UNSAFE as you have to take your eyes of the road, and trust me a split second off the road is enough to not register a change in road situation and for you to crash.
If touch screen everything is not that big of a safety issue, then why is it against the law to use your phone while driving?
How is this different than using a phone??

Maybe in a dark color the front wouldn't be so bad. But I'll say the vehicle is impressive. I think this has a pretty nice edge on the model x mainly because of the significantly cheaper price tag though you do lose some comparatively. A buyer will just need to figure out what they want and will use it for. I hope BMW comes out with a model y competitor in the $50k range with a decent battery range.
