Great video. I would say though Edgar should be higher. He gets outclassed towards the end but for the first half of the game, he is arguably the best character and even when he's outclassed he's still useful.
Absolutely. Edgar (along with Celes, Terra and Locke) have access to the best set up in the game, Dual wielding Atma/ultima weapons/valiant knife with offering/Genji Glove. Nothing else in the game does remotely close to the damage output that does. 9999 x 8= 79,992. Granted it's typically gross overkill if you're not playing the gameboy advance version, but it still vastly blows away Gau and others he put higher on the list.
Every tier list I've seen puts Edgar in top tier because of dragoon setups and good equipment choices. It seems most experienced players just ignore tools past world of balance and he just destroys stuff.
@@Lastjustice everyone sleeps on Cyan but if you give him the quick spell and an economizer and marvel shoes (marvel shoes are incase you dont abuse Odin at all or if a ribbon is not needed) he can roll off 80k for 1 MP and use a shield. It's even better when you give someone the gale hairpin and you place him in the 4th spot so he gets that first attack .
Idk if he gets outclassed unless you aren't leveling him . He gets top end equipment weapons and armor and can deal 10k to everyone with a camera if you go magical
For my Final Team, I used Terra, Celes, Sabin, and Edgar. Terra and Celes used big damage spells and healing spells. Sabin did tons of damage with Phantom/Bum Rush. Edgar used his tools to help with Kefka.
You are forgetting Setzer’s main draw (at end game): Fixed dice plus Offering relic. At high levels, that combo allows him to solo one wing of Kefka’s Tower.
just remembering the time I used Relm sketch and suddently had 200 atma weapons and every other weapon in my inventory. All the characters were happy, but Shadow most of all
@@Yoknapataphaw on the original SNES it didn't work properly and would sometimes either screw your entire save file or give you a TON of every item. I got lucky once and got every item x200 or so in the world of balance.
Your tier list assumes grinding, which favors characters you have around longer. This will impact the tier list in some ways, such as knocking Terra down a peg. You lose her right when you get your first Espers, meaning she misses out on some HP and MP gain and spell learning time. Also you should put Locke in the God Tier, since by equipping the best weapons and relics in the game, he has higher damage output than even Gembox > Ultima > Quick > Ultima Ultima. 8 hits with the Atma Weapon/Valiant Knife combo ignore defense, and after a certain point deal maximum damage, inspite of his HP levels. At lower levels the weapons offset one another's weakness. This isn't even an exploit, and it's available to you right when you get him back in the WoR. Gau should be in the mid-tier. The time investment for his rages is only justified by fun factor, not by power factor. Generic magic or skills trumps him performing the same attack over and over, or worse, alternating it with a normal attack. The Wind God Gau build doesn't peg him up a tier, either. His utility in a low level run of the game comes from the strength of early rages, and the fact that he skips input time. Mog should be in low tier. Dances aren't that great, can fail and waste a turn, and he is obtained late, meaning it takes longer to get him stats and learn magic. Plus his best Dance is easily missed. Bring Edgar up to God Tier. He is present for nearly the whole game, recruited early in both worlds, and may always be in your party, allowing him to learn more magic than anyone else, even without stopping to grind. His tools attack and magic also reflect against the stats you can grind up for him. STR for Autocrossbow, Chainsaw, Drill. Magic for Flash and Bio Blaster. Knock Relm down two tiers. She is obtained so late into the WoB, that you need to stop to grind magic for her. Her personal skill is only useful as Control, and only useful if you have either played the game tons or have a guide to use it to help you learn blue magic. Keep Sabin in the high tier. His Blitzes go either way, physical or magical, depending on the Blitz. What keeps him out of God TIer is inputing Blitz is never 100% clean for anybody, but even if you could get it to be that way, he is restricted in some cases by the elements he has available to his AOEs. Bring Shadow up to high tier. Items thrown can play off of Magic Power or Vigor, depending on if it's a skean or not. If you grind his STR/Vigor, Throw will allow him to hit max damage, every single turn, earlier than pretty much any other character, particularly by exploiting the elemental weaknesses of enemies with the Blizzard, Flame, and Thunder sabers. Lastly, bring Strago up to Mid Tier. He starts with Aqua Rake, which is pretty much a superior version of Ice 2 for about the same cost. Raising of his magical power and performing his sidequest in THamasa in the WoR grants him Grandtrain, his most powerful Lore, which is basically a less expensive MP wise, slightly weaker Ultima, that is learned more quickly.
i finished FFVI for the first time just 4 days ago and i pretty much agree with what you said. well, maybe i will make a case of putting Gau to low tier considering the frustration i felt in farming his skills, and coz of that i learned why his skill is called Rage. and even if you are lucky in farming Rages, his damage is pretty inconsistent coz it relies on the AI actually doing what you want him to do. in the end Locke was the wrecking machine i didn't expect with X-Fight and Valiant Knife.
Edgar Sabin Terra and Celes are the top 4 in speedrunning with Gogo tied with Sabin. Who grinds this game to max 9999 x 8 damage? That is so last century. Play for a challenge for a change, and don't overlevel. Celes is in the higher tier than Locke, they have basically the same equipment sets, but Celes can wear Minerva and other female only gear like Mystery Veil. Terra's Morph is insanely useful, as it grants 2x damage done and 1/2 damage taken, while also Morph is buffed after Phunbaba to last longer. This post assumes you grind to entirely useless casual levels and waste your time. The best character comparisons are from speedrunning.
@@SirVyre You can utilize speedrunning strats in casual play, and yes that is also fun. So that is not really an excuse. Speedrunning is the BEST way to learn characters strengths, as each character is utilized at minimul level, and it is much easier to see those strengths. BTW Edgar is not god tier. Edgar is useless in the WOR as most of his tools scale off physical, and physical in general scales 50% worse than magic because double earrings stack, while atlas + atlas dos not, neither does atlas + hero ring. Your game knowledge in general speaks volumes, you're probably someone who has never beat the game below level 80. interceptor becomes pretty useless in the WoR...just use golem or use vanish and the attack interceptor blocks, and the miserable damage he deals isnt worth it
His Kagunei or whatever it’s called is really useful in the coliseum when it casts Stop...I really like Shadow, plus he can help Locke steal items if need be (really useful when stealing off those Brachiosaurus enemies)
I have to say, even though I love my girls Terra and Celes, my favourite character in FF6 is Sabin. He has saved my party countless of times in the game, my star party was: Sabin, obviously, Cyan and Shadow then I could fill the last space with anyone, especially Terra or Celes to use magic. For me Sabin is the best character in FF6, along with Shadow, my cool dude
Try a low level run by running away from most encounters that gives HP then come here and tell us that FFVI is EASY, Sure it is easy compared to Vay or the older RPG.
@@danballe Sure, any game is more difficult when you go out of your way to make it more difficult. FF6 at least used to be especially popular for challenge runs (low level games, natural magic games, etc) exactly because the game is really easy if you don't hobble yourself in some way. In seriousness, I think a romhack like Brave New World is a more interesting way to make the game challenging, but if you're more of the challenge run type I definitely respect that.
There's plenty of easy ways win in the Colosseum besides using Umaro. Gogo with only the command you want will slaughter it. You can equip berzerk rings if you really need to. Umaro is hands down the worst character in the game. If you max out everyone at lvl 99 you will see a HUGE difference between him and everyone else.

I was largely sure I had some means of making my characters go berserk in the arena, but now I feel like a crazy person. In any case my original point still stands..Umaro sucks, and there's better ways of doing basically everything than using him regardless of me misremembering a detail of the game.
i just did this as soon as i got edgar and setzer without mog and it took me almost an hour to reach that chest XD definitely grabbing mog first next time
Yeah this was definitely the biggest omission I saw. In addition to being the most godliest of the God tier characters, he becomes godly pretty early and also with ZERO stat or ability grinding needed.
I wouldn’t recommend this for the final boss but if I’m ever bored and grinding for Gil or exp or whatever, my team is Gau, Gogo, Mog, and Umaro. Have Gau and Gogo rage while Mog dances, then lose control of your whole team and enjoy the madness

I usually put Celes and Terra up in the top tier. Then Sabin is awesome and Gau was one of the first characters I was able to get very far in the game with. Locke has always been pretty good, but he becomes more valuable towards the end. I have different team preferences every time I play the game. It just depends on what my situation is at the time.
Terra : Str/Spd buld with master scroll + genji gloves = kills everything Celes : Str,spd,magic build = Tank,sup Relm : spd,magic build with celestriad + miracle shoes or soul of thamasa = ultima all u need Those 3 girls all u need kills everything including kaiser dragon Prolly locke foe stealing thats it
Celes is not a lesser Terra she has the easiest road to 128 magic defense and while runic is less than morph , morph is only practical if you save it for the whole game has it has a hidden charge
Cyan can be better if you optimize him tho, just let him attack last, whike all the other characters use their moves, this gives bushido enough time to charge. Also he is a decent genji glove + master scroll ÷ quick user (his bushido also ignores defences agaisn't elemental attacks)
You don't even have to do that once he learns quick spell. Using quick pauses the ATB gauge for everyone so cyan can charge his bushido while enemies are forced to just wait . Endgame cyan is the strongest character.
i go for whats the best in the end game. not including glitches and game overlooked game breakers. in the end game, stats dont matter cus you can max the important stats with espers. so the only things that seperate the characters is the equipment they can use and the unique skill they have. also take note that the best end game commands are magic with the soul of thamasa+celestriad relics and attack with the genji gloves+master scroll relics. the top 5 are all equally great... its hard to choose so i just listed them in random order. 1. Celes-(can equip all best end game equipment and runic is still useful) ruinc makes her an infinite mana mage 2. Terra-(can equip all best end game equipment and transform is still useful) transfrom makes her the most poweful mage. 3. locke-(can equip all best end game equipment and steal still has uses especially to farm repeat items.) 4. Mog-(can equip the best end game defensive gear and the molulu charm is very useful) 5. Gau-(can equip the best end game defensive gear slightly better than mog and rage can be broken if you desire that lol but no molulu charm) 6. Edgar-(can equip all the best end game equipment) the next few are mediocre 7. Shadow-(interceptor is still useful and his innate physical evade remains) 8. Stezer-(can be spell caster with dice in back row) 9. cyan-ok with genji gloves+master scroll these guys suck in the end game compared to the others cus they have shit equipment 10. Strago-(a couple unique blue mage spells are ok) 11. Sabin-a couple blitzes are ok 12. Relm-ummm the last two are just trash cus they cant use espers to raise their stats and they get shit equipment or cant be controled. 13. Gogo- i could replace relm with gogo because of gogos versatility. 14. umaro
Thank you as a fan of Gau I'm tired of the disrespect he gets. Sure he's time consuming and his rages are uncontrollable but unlike Umaro and Gogo he can learn magic so he can do pretty much everything everyone else can plus literally hundreds of more skills. He can also teach Strago blue magic because in VI Strago just needs to see the skill. I hate when people say that a character is useless only because of how long it takes to get them useful. As a blue mage main in XI,XIV and Explorers let me say this if you had a blue mage and chemist in your party in either 3 of those games you got carried. My friends only had me because of being IRL friends in those games and they still haven't been able to put 2 and 2 together whenever I can't play,they struggle.
Even so, I still refuse to use Gau and it takes way too long to get his Rage Abilities due to random encounters on Veldt and that Leap ability makes Gau leave your party, and I don't like the berserk mode Gau is in using a Rage attack. I will always ditch Gau and pick someone more useful like Gogo or Edgar or Locke, Terra, Celes, Sabin, Mog, Strago, Shadow for my party. Gau is better off transformed as an Imp so he can get a fight ability. And yes while I do use Gau once in a while to teach Strago blue magic like Pep Up then I leave him, I'd rather have Strago fight battles and learn blue magic spells. I also don't like using Umaro and I leave both of them out of Kefkas Tower.
While I do agree that magic. Is the most damage skill in the game, this list is very subjective. For instance shadows throw later on is incredibly OP, Edgar's tool does even armor break, that alone makes it OP for the next attacks and the debilitator makes magic users easier. Locke, well his stats. Are. Good but nothing out of the ordinary, I rather have Sabin over Locke.
Locke has a much better equipment set. I'd use Locke over Sabin any day of the week up to endgame, when swap them. Gogo and Sabin are insanely good in speedrunning. Because Bum Rush ignores magic defense and hits for ~5k on underleveled Gogo/Sabin.
Tl;dr use mog he’s op My problem with Relm, or, as I called her in both of my ffvi playthroughs, Pictomancer Chick, is that not only is she gotten like right before WoR where you have to then go and get her in WoR, she is kind of like Locke in the sense that they are the 2 characters that seem like the worst on paper, not counting Umaro, but with a lot of work, keyword, A LOT OF WORK, can become gods. Locke has nothing going for him until Phoenix Cave, his magic stat is poor, and even with genji glove his damage cannot go anywhere higher than if Terra just does the same thing, or, well, any other character. Yes, steal is good, but even if you use mug you won’t be doing much damage. Relm is the magic counterpart to Locke, where she is the magical powerhouse.
Are you nuts dude?..., Edgar can do 9999 nukes with just his attack command earlier than anyone else and in ruin world Setzer gets so broken with his dices he alone can sweep all battles..., at least we agree Gau being a mad powerhouse...
Locke is God tier, if built right. It’s been a while since I’ve played so I don’t remember item names. Have to build him up with HP and speed esper (GBA). Need the double cast relic, hp sword (higher the hp higher the dmg), and double equip relic. In battle, when on Locke cast quick, then attack. You’ll do 160k damage. Works best on Locke because of his natural high speed stat.
I agree with Locke being the best character, such a good back story. Then the way he saved Celes and they grow closer to each other throughout the game.
Locke is my favorite character in FF. When Cyan (the legendary samurai that said fk the army I'll go solo this) threatens Celes and Locke the little treasure hunter jumps in front I was surprised. Then you learn of his backstory and it all makes sense. Then again Locke and Cyan are my two favorite FF characters. 6 in general has IMO the best cast.
Just from my plays in FF6 I believe your tops should be more of your physical powerhouses. Sure some like Relm and Terra should be up there but you can easily beef any character to do great magic damage. When it comes to doing physical hits you take somebody like shadow, Locke, or Sabin and put the master scroll/gengie glove on and they will basically beat just about anybody in one or two hits
Why Shadow? None of his weapon options are good, so unless you waste a relic slot on merit award he's going to be stuck doing some of the weakest physical damage of any of your fighters... and that's a slot that could have gone to something that greatly boosts damage. Sabin has similar problems. Claws fall off hard in the late game. Not as bad as the crap ninja daggers that Shadow uses, but pretty damn hard. There's a reason people tell you to spec Sabin to magic instead. Since you only have one master scroll without the bonus content, you might as well give it to either Locke or Edgar since sword users are generally OP in FFVI.
@@deedoubs shadow you can buy all the weapons you want to throw and Shadow can do full damage without really worrying about building up his stats. Just make sure his defense is built up good.
I have a save file where I have Terra, Celes, Edgar, Strago & Relm all at 127, 128, 129 MBlock. Due to the MBlock bug, they cannot be hit save for certain combinations of attacks. Each of these characters should be in the God Tier as they are almost unkillable by mobs.
My set-up for fighting Kefka at the end of the game? Equip your characters with armor that absorbs fire, then merton the hell out of him. Even when he uses fallen one you will immediately regain 5000+ hp through absorbing fire, you are invincible!

Another one people always mess up is they say "I" when it should be "me" So like they say "do you want to go see a movie with Jeff and I?". I think the reason is cuz they know "me and Jeff is wrong". So then they assume that "me" is always wrong. A simple check to figure out which is correct is just flip the sentence to Singular. "Want to see a movie with I?" Obviously wrong, so thats how you'll know the original is "Jeff and me" This stuff is all super easy to figure out if you can find some simple tests to check there rules with. i guarantee you'll notice so many mistakes in other people podcasts and vids and stuff from now on. (Or maybe you already did notice)
I think tiers that consider max potential on lvl 99 + top equip are silly. If you take the time to level up and get top equip, you can kill any enemy with any character in 2 seconds - thus making any comparison useless. Imho, tier lists should consider a normal or low lvl playthrough - without the OP game breaking equips (again - if you have gem box + economizer, any character bar Umaro is godlike). In a normal/low lvl tier, taking in consideration how late each character joins (less time = less magic + stats) best characters should be Terra, Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Gau and Gogo.
It's been a while but I followed a guide, Locke could hit for 40,000 hit points in one turn with the right gloves and swords ! Locke is the most powerful by a long shot.
Awww, now I understand how you "objectively" tier out characters...it's based off how much they can go boom at end game. I get ya. it's not so much based off of utility, nor is it based off of their uses throughout different points of the game (typically early, mid, and late) but rather than at the end of the game. Gau's use for instance completely runs out by end game, is absolutely out classed through Locke, Terra, and Celes, through sheer equipment. Before World of Ruin, I can admit that he's best. Even further, Setzer and Cyan are admittedly weak characters as well...But you don't add Mog here because he can equip Snow Muffler? The issue here is that Strago absolutely becomes more useful then Mog due to various lores (Aqua Rake, level 4 flare, grand train, Pearl Wind), let alone his own decent magic strength being the highest for Men. Again...I'm looking at utility here. Strago being able to take out random groupings of enemies seems more valid then having a possiblity for Mog to hit with Wind Slash or Surge. I suppose if you're using God Wind Gau...then yes, things are moot then, which maybe you're taking that into consideration. That said, wouldn't you be more prone to placing Locke at S Tier instead? With his ability to Dual wield Illumina, and Valiant knife...Offering and Genji Glove for max damage...and if not that then Valiant Knife + Paladin shield + Offering ... Sabin absolutely S-Tier due to early Bum Rush Terra+Celes absolutely S-Tier due to high innate Magic and ability to equip Illumina + Palladin Shield Edgar + Shadow + Gau at the A-Tier for skeans + Stars early/mid game ... Edgar being great early game, then coming back in mid game with Pearl Lance (25% Pearl cast) with Dragon Boots and Dragon Horn ... and Shadow with free X-Zone The rest at low tier / C Tier (Gogo, Setzer, Cyan) ... and clearly Umaro at F Tier

I disagree with Gau's God Tier placement. Any character in this game can be godlike if you strategically use Esper level up bonuses, and the amount of time it takes spent grinding on the Veldt with Gau to learn his Rages could be better spent on a more powerful, controllable character boosting up their Magic level.
I could argue that any time spent leveling would be better spent beating the game, and you do not need esper level stats to beat the game. Although in the speedrunning community, Celes is focus leveled in the WOR to learn Ice 3. But as soon as she learns Ice 3 at level 42, she can solo the rest of the game by buffing her magic with gear such as the magus hat, she can reach 9999 damage by level 42 with NO esper stat levels.
@@xjohnreese9488 To your first point I could argue that any time spent beating Final Fantasy 6 could be better spent not playing the game at all and instead learning a life skill, forging lasting relationships with other people, or bettering yourself in some way. FF6 is an easy game and doesn't require any grinding to beat. This isn't a conversation about whether someone should speedrun through the game, or whether they should level their characters up to godlike status and utilize game mechanics to min/max stats, it's a conversation about who the best characters are.
@@acidwizard6528 Yes and you don't have to speedrun the game to utilize the points I made and you stated the convo is about characters, and tricking out a character via esper stats is a terrible benchmark, as ANY character can be tricked out via espers. It comes down to natural speed and class mechanics. A lot of this stuff I didn't even know until I looked at speedrunners. I use many speedrunning strats whilst playing casually, for knowledge in learning how to play more efficiently, besides blindly sticking to some character with terrible mechanics, and using esper stat gains to support this argument...when you could be much more efficient by simply learning the mechanics of the game better...besides using esper level up gains as a crutch. If you watch twitch, I would recommend watching Dyne_Nuitari , he is a speedrunner, and I have learned a lot about how to be more efficient from this guy.
Umaro does such for all the reasons you lay out, but he's super helpful in the Fanatics Tower. I only use him when I have an extra space to fill, though.
I don't think this video is very researched. No one plays Edgar for tools in World of Ruin anymore. Him and Mog are essentially just jumping permanently.
Cyan+dual Kazakeri Blades=damage for days lol Strago gets 2 cheaper versions of Ultima and can cast all magic anyone else can plus more Shadow, Umaro and Gogo are really good for coliseum which deserves some mentioning. As far as magic goes, I think it’s over rated in this game till end-game because it’s usually not needed between Edgar’s tools, Shadow’s throw, Sabin’s Blitz, Mogs Dance, Setzer occasional Slots, Gau’s Cat Scratch, and Umaro’s random attacks Really a tier list in this sort of game all just depend on how you play the game. If you like to conserve magic, this tier list almost gets turned upside down
Correct, anyone Dual wielding Atma weapons/valiant knife with Offering/Geji Glove are God Tier. Celes, Locke, Edgar and Terra by default should be the top tier characters. Putting anyone else above them is ignoring math/facts.
Umaro is great for the Coliseum, since the place already plays into his mechanics. Also, he saved my fight against the ice dragon, since the ice dragon literally could not kill him, all it did was heal him. I just left to make some tea. He does a lot of damage and is one less thing to worry about.
I love Umaro for his ability to complete a no command run. Yet anyone able to use Magic in this game is OP. I agree with your list if magic is unavailable. Otherwise it feels like a clone effect. Terra is great in low level runs.
I've always used Terra and Celes in every playthrough. while the other two just depend on my preference at the time. Something I can't believe I didn't realise until my current playthrough and that is the fact Shadow is Relm's father. Which explains so much now that I know this.
Yep. While never said directly in any version of the game there was apparently an interview back in 1995 that confirmed.this to be true. Which explains why Interceptor who usually hates anyone that isn't Shadow instantly warms up to Relm. Plus Shadow is the only other one that can equip Relm's momento ring which is a keep sake from her mother. There are other things that hint towards it. However those two in particular always stuck out as strange to me when I first played it many years ago.
I know right! I've been replaying the GBA version the last week or so and had just gotten to the part where you save Shadow from the Behemoth Kings. Seeing the flashback scene of interceptor trying to get Shadow to turn back and Shadow mentioning he had a daughter... all the while he is resting in Strago and Relm's house it just kinda came to me. Wasn't expecting when I tried looking it up to actually be confirmed to be true. I figured it was gonna just be something along the lines of that one theory that Gogo might actually be Setzer's dead friend/lover/rival. You know something some people might think, but have no concrete proof about.
Your party in FFIV is forced all the way along. You can’t swap out any characters whenever you want. The storyline controls at all times who you have in your party.

I think 2 tier lists are needed one for W.O.B and W.O.R Word of balance: God Tier: Edgar, Saban Top tier: Celes, Terra, Shadow, Mid tier: Locke, Cyan, Gau, Mog Low tier: Setzar, Relm, Stago World of Ruin: God tier: Terra, Locke, Celes, Edgar Top tier: Gau, Sabin, mog, relm Mid tier: Shadow, Gogo, Setza, Stargo Low tier: Cyan, Umaro
I would put locke and setzer on the same tier. They both rely on Master scroll combo and I think setzer doesn't need to be as high level for fixed dice to do their thing relative to locke's valiant knife.
I mean on a series note. Locke. Offering and Genji glove with Atma Weapon and Valiant Knife for 8 hits of 9999 since they ignore def and scale off health.

Many people dont seem to like them but my personal favorites are : Relm, Mog, Gau, Edgar… never thought Celes was that good, im surprised she made it to top tier. I barely ever use the Runic ability.
The reason Celes is good is because even ignoring her runic ability, she is highly available (being missing only during the section between Vector and floating continent) and has really good magic stats in a game where magic is very broken. In FFVI, being missing from the party for a significant number of levels hurts you bad since esper bonuses make up the majority of your late game stats.
The top 6 are 1. Terra 2. Celes 3. Locke 4. Mog 5. Edgar 6. Gau Because they have the best end game equipment options. Xfight with duel wielding is the most powerful command against single targets. Xmagic with quick is the most powerful command for aoe damage, aoe curing, and other nifty stuff magic can do. If you want to be cheap, technically God tier is both gau and gogo because one of their rages can control all enemies in the game including bosses. Kinda like Ernst in suikoden 5. My team was terra, cus of morph increases with xfight, Celes with xfight and runic is nifty, Locke with xfight because it’s convenient to always have steal, and mog with xmagic and paladin shield as my tank caster... also mululu charm makes the whole Game a cake walk.
Dude Edgar's attacks shown here looks so fun and awesome. Hes automatically on my list. I'll also choose Locke, celeste and terria. Wouldve liked to use the ninja guy.
If I had to rank characters... God Tier: Terra, Celes, Edgar, Shadow, Relm. Top Tier: Setzer (with reels bug), Gau, Mog. Mid Tier: Locke, Sabin, Cyan (with or without berserker bug), Shadow, Gogo. Bottom Tier: Setzer (without reels bug), Umaro. In the end, all characters can do 9999 dmg, so it comes down to what they can block/evade and the utility they can provide.
>setzer fixed dice + offering says hello. makes him an absolute monster with no stat investment required whatsoever. thank you for not putting gogo any lower though, as most do. i don't care about their weaknesses, any character that can cast ultima twice in one turn for no MP cost is good. their utility is also unprecedented. i can't tell you how much i hate having locke around just for the once-in-a-while occasion that something has something *really* worth stealing. gogo handles that perfectly. i don't care to factor in the whole esper-stat-farming crippling gogo because yaaaawn. it's really easy to make anyone else a broken character to the point that distinguishing them is almost pointless. and also really boring and time-consuming. i just took on kefka with setzer+gogo+mog+umaro. setzer was the only character i bothered grinding (and i regret it), never even used the others before the tower, didn't use the offering or gem box, and i still annihilated him. grinding characters just saps all the fun out. (these two are my favs though so i'm totally biased)
As much as I hate to admit it, I think objectively Mog is the best character. Dont get me wrong though, video was awesome and resulted in me subbing to the channel.
Don't know you can build characters' stats as you want with the equiped Esper? Cyan being crap tier? Give him Bismarck just before he lvl up and he will do a ton of dmg with his weapons. Also, as second stats to raise up with Esper is vigor. Equip him with Genji Glove and perform the quadraslam and he will hit 8times.
Celes. Dual illuminas with black belt. Just runic and let enemies attack you. she'll block every magic and physical attack and absorb magic plus destroy you without you having to press attack. and if she's in yellow life and she gets attacked, she will counter with her limit break
People hate on umaro but with the right relics in the right encounters hes untouchable and has decent damage, also allows you to focus on your other 3 characters. He wrecks in the phoenex dungeon as well as the magic only dungeon, wheres hes the only character capable of physical attacks. + you never have to grind him up or teach him magicite.
Your list is very flawed. Edgar, Celes, Terra, Locke> everyone else. Dual wielding Atma/ultima weapons/valiant knife with offerings does more damage than anything you suggest. Magic is strong, but that's still more damage dealing 9999X 8. In the GBA you can steal as many of the best weapons as you like blowing away your magical tier list.
Your list is quite skewed from most people's lists. 1. First off, almost every website or known player puts Edgar as top tier. Magic is awesome (especially with things like Gem Box and Quick + Ultima to yield 4x9999 damage) but nothing can stop the overpoweredness of Genji Glove/Master Scroll's 8x9999 damage. Use Quick and it becomes 16 x 9999 damage. Any character that can use Offering(Master Scroll) and Genji Glove ability to the fullest is top tier. Therefore, Edgar is absolutely top tier. He can equip the best items in the game and be set up to yield 8x9999 damage in a single move. Plus, he can be used for Dragon Horn+Dragon Boots and Holy Lance if you decide not to give him the Genji/Master Scroll setup. Locke is actually a poor man's version of Edgar. His Valiant Knife and Atma Weapon(Ultima Weapon) setup is good, but in the later versions of FF6, you can get multiple Lightbringers(Illuminas) and Atma Weapons, so Valiant Knife is unnecessary. 2. Gau is mid tier for the very fact that his Rage is unreliable. 3. Cyan should be higher, in Low Tier at least. In older versions of FF6, his Bushido charge was a bottleneck. In later versions of FF6, though, his Bushido charging time is just like casting spells, so you don't have to wait for him to finish charging in order to use other characters. And his Quadra Slice ability ignores defense and hits four times for 4x 9999 damage.
I disagree with you on Gau on God Tier, he should be on low Tier and here's why. I absolutely hate using Gau in Final Fantasy 6, all of his Rage attacks makes him berserk and you can't control him. I hate having the annoying hassle of using leap on the Veldt. Good lord it takes so many hours and it's super boring to get rage moves. It doesn't help that the random enemy encounters in the game are random, I don't like having to use leap every time and then you have to have 3 party members enter a random encounter battle just so Gau can join you back. I'd rather turn him into an Imp and make him a fighter instead or cast magic spells. Besides that, Rage becomes obsolete later on in the game, In the end I leave him out of Kefkas Tower. Strago is actually pretty useful if you have the patience to run around to build up his Step Mine or Traveler spell can penetrate through enemy defenses especially against enemies like Intangir and I like the Mighty Guard spell he has. Gogo is my absolute favorite character in the game sure he can't get status growth but being able to choose 3 ability slots and mimic attacks made me go for him. I also like using Mog as his Moogle Charm turns off random encounters though you get it late in the game but I don't like using his dance moves. Relm does have some abilities although I didn't like sketch, I like control ability. I agree with you on Umaro, as he's berserk which is the reason why I leave him out of Kefkas Tower along with Gau. I didn't like Setzers Slot and I didn't like using Coin Toss either. Cyan is an okay fighter though I don't use is swdtech very much. My favorite characters I use are Terra, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Celes, Gogo, Strago, Mog, but I will always leave out Gau and Umaro.
Surely GoGo is top because hidden in the menu you can assign literally all other characters unique abilities and have multiple. Also maybe it's different on later versions, but Gau and Mog can both take 1hp per attack with Snow Scarf.

Great video. I would say though Edgar should be higher. He gets outclassed towards the end but for the first half of the game, he is arguably the best character and even when he's outclassed he's still useful.
Absolutely. Edgar (along with Celes, Terra and Locke) have access to the best set up in the game, Dual wielding Atma/ultima weapons/valiant knife with offering/Genji Glove. Nothing else in the game does remotely close to the damage output that does. 9999 x 8= 79,992. Granted it's typically gross overkill if you're not playing the gameboy advance version, but it still vastly blows away Gau and others he put higher on the list.
Every tier list I've seen puts Edgar in top tier because of dragoon setups and good equipment choices. It seems most experienced players just ignore tools past world of balance and he just destroys stuff.
@@Lastjustice everyone sleeps on Cyan but if you give him the quick spell and an economizer and marvel shoes (marvel shoes are incase you dont abuse Odin at all or if a ribbon is not needed) he can roll off 80k for 1 MP and use a shield. It's even better when you give someone the gale hairpin and you place him in the 4th spot so he gets that first attack .

Idk if he gets outclassed unless you aren't leveling him . He gets top end equipment weapons and armor and can deal 10k to everyone with a camera if you go magical

For my Final Team, I used Terra, Celes, Sabin, and Edgar. Terra and Celes used big damage spells and healing spells. Sabin did tons of damage with Phantom/Bum Rush. Edgar used his tools to help with Kefka.
My preferred team, as well.

You are forgetting Setzer’s main draw (at end game): Fixed dice plus Offering relic. At high levels, that combo allows him to solo one wing of Kefka’s Tower.
just remembering the time I used Relm sketch and suddently had 200 atma weapons and every other weapon in my inventory. All the characters were happy, but Shadow most of all

@@Yoknapataphaw on the original SNES it didn't work properly and would sometimes either screw your entire save file or give you a TON of every item. I got lucky once and got every item x200 or so in the world of balance.

Your tier list assumes grinding, which favors characters you have around longer. This will impact the tier list in some ways, such as knocking Terra down a peg. You lose her right when you get your first Espers, meaning she misses out on some HP and MP gain and spell learning time.
Also you should put Locke in the God Tier, since by equipping the best weapons and relics in the game, he has higher damage output than even Gembox > Ultima > Quick > Ultima Ultima. 8 hits with the Atma Weapon/Valiant Knife combo ignore defense, and after a certain point deal maximum damage, inspite of his HP levels. At lower levels the weapons offset one another's weakness. This isn't even an exploit, and it's available to you right when you get him back in the WoR.
Gau should be in the mid-tier. The time investment for his rages is only justified by fun factor, not by power factor. Generic magic or skills trumps him performing the same attack over and over, or worse, alternating it with a normal attack. The Wind God Gau build doesn't peg him up a tier, either. His utility in a low level run of the game comes from the strength of early rages, and the fact that he skips input time.
Mog should be in low tier. Dances aren't that great, can fail and waste a turn, and he is obtained late, meaning it takes longer to get him stats and learn magic. Plus his best Dance is easily missed.
Bring Edgar up to God Tier. He is present for nearly the whole game, recruited early in both worlds, and may always be in your party, allowing him to learn more magic than anyone else, even without stopping to grind. His tools attack and magic also reflect against the stats you can grind up for him. STR for Autocrossbow, Chainsaw, Drill. Magic for Flash and Bio Blaster.
Knock Relm down two tiers. She is obtained so late into the WoB, that you need to stop to grind magic for her. Her personal skill is only useful as Control, and only useful if you have either played the game tons or have a guide to use it to help you learn blue magic.
Keep Sabin in the high tier. His Blitzes go either way, physical or magical, depending on the Blitz. What keeps him out of God TIer is inputing Blitz is never 100% clean for anybody, but even if you could get it to be that way, he is restricted in some cases by the elements he has available to his AOEs.
Bring Shadow up to high tier. Items thrown can play off of Magic Power or Vigor, depending on if it's a skean or not. If you grind his STR/Vigor, Throw will allow him to hit max damage, every single turn, earlier than pretty much any other character, particularly by exploiting the elemental weaknesses of enemies with the Blizzard, Flame, and Thunder sabers.
Lastly, bring Strago up to Mid Tier. He starts with Aqua Rake, which is pretty much a superior version of Ice 2 for about the same cost. Raising of his magical power and performing his sidequest in THamasa in the WoR grants him Grandtrain, his most powerful Lore, which is basically a less expensive MP wise, slightly weaker Ultima, that is learned more quickly.
i finished FFVI for the first time just 4 days ago and i pretty much agree with what you said. well, maybe i will make a case of putting Gau to low tier considering the frustration i felt in farming his skills, and coz of that i learned why his skill is called Rage. and even if you are lucky in farming Rages, his damage is pretty inconsistent coz it relies on the AI actually doing what you want him to do. in the end Locke was the wrecking machine i didn't expect with X-Fight and Valiant Knife.
His list clearly assumes grinding as the ONLY way to make Gau useful is to grind on the Veldt with him for hours to learn the various Rages.
Edgar Sabin Terra and Celes are the top 4 in speedrunning with Gogo tied with Sabin. Who grinds this game to max 9999 x 8 damage? That is so last century. Play for a challenge for a change, and don't overlevel.
Celes is in the higher tier than Locke, they have basically the same equipment sets, but Celes can wear Minerva and other female only gear like Mystery Veil. Terra's Morph is insanely useful, as it grants 2x damage done and 1/2 damage taken, while also Morph is buffed after Phunbaba to last longer.
This post assumes you grind to entirely useless casual levels and waste your time. The best character comparisons are from speedrunning.

Speedrunning is the BEST way to learn characters strengths, as each character is utilized at minimul level, and it is much easier to see those strengths.
BTW Edgar is not god tier. Edgar is useless in the WOR as most of his tools scale off physical, and physical in general scales 50% worse than magic because double earrings stack, while atlas + atlas dos not, neither does atlas + hero ring. Your game knowledge in general speaks volumes, you're probably someone who has never beat the game below level 80. And the tools that Edgar uses that does magic damage like flash has low fixed power ratings.

I feel Shadow should be a tad higher due to Interceptor.
interceptor becomes pretty useless in the WoR...just use golem or use vanish and the attack interceptor blocks, and the miserable damage he deals isnt worth it
Shadow's Throw also ignores defense and can hit 9999 easily, so you can just put him in the back row to avoid heavy damage as well.

His Kagunei or whatever it’s called is really useful in the coliseum when it casts Stop...I really like Shadow, plus he can help Locke steal items if need be (really useful when stealing off those Brachiosaurus enemies)
I have to say, even though I love my girls Terra and Celes, my favourite character in FF6 is Sabin. He has saved my party countless of times in the game, my star party was: Sabin, obviously, Cyan and Shadow then I could fill the last space with anyone, especially Terra or Celes to use magic.
For me Sabin is the best character in FF6, along with Shadow, my cool dude
In my opinion FF6 is so easy that it makes high hassle, high reward characters like Gau much less appealing.

Try a low level run by running away from most encounters that gives HP then come here and tell us that FFVI is EASY, Sure it is easy compared to Vay or the older RPG.
@@danballe Sure, any game is more difficult when you go out of your way to make it more difficult. FF6 at least used to be especially popular for challenge runs (low level games, natural magic games, etc) exactly because the game is really easy if you don't hobble yourself in some way. In seriousness, I think a romhack like Brave New World is a more interesting way to make the game challenging, but if you're more of the challenge run type I definitely respect that.

You can’t insult my mans Umaro when he can absolutely destroy the Colosseum and get your entire party some double XP eggs.
There's plenty of easy ways win in the Colosseum besides using Umaro. Gogo with only the command you want will slaughter it. You can equip berzerk rings if you really need to. Umaro is hands down the worst character in the game. If you max out everyone at lvl 99 you will see a HUGE difference between him and everyone else.

I was largely sure I had some means of making my characters go berserk in the arena, but now I feel like a crazy person. In any case my original point still stands..Umaro sucks, and there's better ways of doing basically everything than using him regardless of me misremembering a detail of the game.

I always get Setzer fixed dice as soon as I can, exploit by using mog and the moogle charm. Hes pretty OP fast.
i just did this as soon as i got edgar and setzer without mog and it took me almost an hour to reach that chest XD definitely grabbing mog first next time
Everyone seems to be here to argue but I just wanted to say that we actually need that anime to be done with full episodes and at least 100 of them.
Once you get the Fixed Dice and Offering for Setzer, he becomes game-breaking
I'd rather use dual Atma weapons and offering instead with Locke/Terra/Celes/Edgar. Consistent damage>random damage.
Fixed Dice + Doom Darts + Genji Glove + Offering could make Setzer a power house. Just sucks how this game ends up being all magic based.
Yeah this was definitely the biggest omission I saw. In addition to being the most godliest of the God tier characters, he becomes godly pretty early and also with ZERO stat or ability grinding needed.

I wouldn’t recommend this for the final boss but if I’m ever bored and grinding for Gil or exp or whatever, my team is Gau, Gogo, Mog, and Umaro. Have Gau and Gogo rage while Mog dances, then lose control of your whole team and enjoy the madness

I usually put Celes and Terra up in the top tier. Then Sabin is awesome and Gau was one of the first characters I was able to get very far in the game with. Locke has always been pretty good, but he becomes more valuable towards the end. I have different team preferences every time I play the game. It just depends on what my situation is at the time.

Celes is not a lesser Terra she has the easiest road to 128 magic defense and while runic is less than morph , morph is only practical if you save it for the whole game has it has a hidden charge

Cyan can be better if you optimize him tho, just let him attack last, whike all the other characters use their moves, this gives bushido enough time to charge. Also he is a decent genji glove + master scroll ÷ quick user (his bushido also ignores defences agaisn't elemental attacks)
You don't even have to do that once he learns quick spell. Using quick pauses the ATB gauge for everyone so cyan can charge his bushido while enemies are forced to just wait . Endgame cyan is the strongest character.

i go for whats the best in the end game. not including glitches and game overlooked game breakers.
in the end game, stats dont matter cus you can max the important stats with espers. so the only things that seperate the characters is the equipment they can use and the unique skill they have. also take note that the best end game commands are magic with the soul of thamasa+celestriad relics and attack with the genji gloves+master scroll relics.
the top 5 are all equally great... its hard to choose so i just listed them in random order.
1. Celes-(can equip all best end game equipment and runic is still useful) ruinc makes her an infinite mana mage
2. Terra-(can equip all best end game equipment and transform is still useful) transfrom makes her the most poweful mage.
3. locke-(can equip all best end game equipment and steal still has uses especially to farm repeat items.)
4. Mog-(can equip the best end game defensive gear and the molulu charm is very useful)
5. Gau-(can equip the best end game defensive gear slightly better than mog and rage can be broken if you desire that lol but no molulu charm)
6. Edgar-(can equip all the best end game equipment)
the next few are mediocre
7. Shadow-(interceptor is still useful and his innate physical evade remains)
8. Stezer-(can be spell caster with dice in back row)
9. cyan-ok with genji gloves+master scroll
these guys suck in the end game compared to the others cus they have shit equipment
10. Strago-(a couple unique blue mage spells are ok)
11. Sabin-a couple blitzes are ok
12. Relm-ummm
the last two are just trash cus they cant use espers to raise their stats and they get shit equipment or cant be controled.
13. Gogo- i could replace relm with gogo because of gogos versatility.

Thank you as a fan of Gau I'm tired of the disrespect he gets. Sure he's time consuming and his rages are uncontrollable but unlike Umaro and Gogo he can learn magic so he can do pretty much everything everyone else can plus literally hundreds of more skills. He can also teach Strago blue magic because in VI Strago just needs to see the skill. I hate when people say that a character is useless only because of how long it takes to get them useful. As a blue mage main in XI,XIV and Explorers let me say this if you had a blue mage and chemist in your party in either 3 of those games you got carried.
My friends only had me because of being IRL friends in those games and they still haven't been able to put 2 and 2 together whenever I can't play,they struggle.
Even so, I still refuse to use Gau and it takes way too long to get his Rage Abilities due to random encounters on Veldt and that Leap ability makes Gau leave your party, and I don't like the berserk mode Gau is in using a Rage attack. I will always ditch Gau and pick someone more useful like Gogo or Edgar or Locke, Terra, Celes, Sabin, Mog, Strago, Shadow for my party. Gau is better off transformed as an Imp so he can get a fight ability.
And yes while I do use Gau once in a while to teach Strago blue magic like Pep Up then I leave him, I'd rather have Strago fight battles and learn blue magic spells. I also don't like using Umaro and I leave both of them out of Kefkas Tower.
Gogo has access to ALL of the magic of the other members in your party combined. that's even better than having to teach them anything lol

While I do agree that magic. Is the most damage skill in the game, this list is very subjective.
For instance shadows throw later on is incredibly OP, Edgar's tool does even armor break, that alone makes it OP for the next attacks and the debilitator makes magic users easier. Locke, well his stats. Are. Good but nothing out of the ordinary, I rather have Sabin over Locke.

Locke has a much better equipment set. I'd use Locke over Sabin any day of the week up to endgame, when swap them. Gogo and Sabin are insanely good in speedrunning. Because Bum Rush ignores magic defense and hits for ~5k on underleveled Gogo/Sabin.
@@mouradlajili2417 You can use thief knife on Shadow (or anyone with merit award) to replace Locke if you want steal for certain encounters.
Morph becomes a detriment to terra in endgame. Celes becomes god tier at that point.

My problem with Relm, or, as I called her in both of my ffvi playthroughs, Pictomancer Chick, is that not only is she gotten like right before WoR where you have to then go and get her in WoR, she is kind of like Locke in the sense that they are the 2 characters that seem like the worst on paper, not counting Umaro, but with a lot of work, keyword, A LOT OF WORK, can become gods. Locke has nothing going for him until Phoenix Cave, his magic stat is poor, and even with genji glove his damage cannot go anywhere higher than if Terra just does the same thing, or, well, any other character. Yes, steal is good, but even if you use mug you won’t be doing much damage. Relm is the magic counterpart to Locke, where she is the magical powerhouse.
Gau is a beast and depending on which port you play he can be completely broken
They shouldn't have cut out the offering/wind slash cat scratch setup.

Terra: magic + morph
Cyan: bushido
Locke: steal

Locke is God tier, if built right. It’s been a while since I’ve played so I don’t remember item names.
Have to build him up with HP and speed esper (GBA). Need the double cast relic, hp sword (higher the hp higher the dmg), and double equip relic.
In battle, when on Locke cast quick, then attack. You’ll do 160k damage.
Works best on Locke because of his natural high speed stat.
Drill is still over powered because it ignores defense making him indispensable against certain special enemies.
I agree with Locke being the best character, such a good back story. Then the way he saved Celes and they grow closer to each other throughout the game.
Locke is my favorite character in FF.
When Cyan (the legendary samurai that said fk the army I'll go solo this) threatens Celes and Locke the little treasure hunter jumps in front I was surprised. Then you learn of his backstory and it all makes sense. Then again Locke and Cyan are my two favorite FF characters. 6 in general has IMO the best cast.
Terra and Locke are like d4 and e4 in Chess. Both best by test.
Just from my plays in FF6 I believe your tops should be more of your physical powerhouses. Sure some like Relm and Terra should be up there but you can easily beef any character to do great magic damage. When it comes to doing physical hits you take somebody like shadow, Locke, or Sabin and put the master scroll/gengie glove on and they will basically beat just about anybody in one or two hits
Why Shadow? None of his weapon options are good, so unless you waste a relic slot on merit award he's going to be stuck doing some of the weakest physical damage of any of your fighters... and that's a slot that could have gone to something that greatly boosts damage.
Sabin has similar problems. Claws fall off hard in the late game. Not as bad as the crap ninja daggers that Shadow uses, but pretty damn hard. There's a reason people tell you to spec Sabin to magic instead. Since you only have one master scroll without the bonus content, you might as well give it to either Locke or Edgar since sword users are generally OP in FFVI.
@@deedoubs shadow you can buy all the weapons you want to throw and Shadow can do full damage without really worrying about building up his stats. Just make sure his defense is built up good.
I have a save file where I have Terra, Celes, Edgar, Strago & Relm all at 127, 128, 129 MBlock. Due to the MBlock bug, they cannot be hit save for certain combinations of attacks. Each of these characters should be in the God Tier as they are almost unkillable by mobs.
My set-up for fighting Kefka at the end of the game? Equip your characters with armor that absorbs fire, then merton the hell out of him. Even when he uses fallen one you will immediately regain 5000+ hp through absorbing fire, you are invincible!
One more thing about Gau is that he can equip the Snow Scarf just like Mog.

So like they say "do you want to go see a movie with Jeff and I?". I think the reason is cuz they know "me and Jeff is wrong". So then they assume that "me" is always wrong.
A simple check to figure out which is correct is just flip the sentence to Singular. "Want to see a movie with I?" Obviously wrong, so thats how you'll know the original is "Jeff and me"
This stuff is all super easy to figure out if you can find some simple tests to check there rules with. i guarantee you'll notice so many mistakes in other people podcasts and vids and stuff from now on. (Or maybe you already did notice)

Gau can also equip the Snow Muffler. Both characters can hit 255 defense to take only 1 dmg per hit.
I think tiers that consider max potential on lvl 99 + top equip are silly. If you take the time to level up and get top equip, you can kill any enemy with any character in 2 seconds - thus making any comparison useless.
Imho, tier lists should consider a normal or low lvl playthrough - without the OP game breaking equips (again - if you have gem box + economizer, any character bar Umaro is godlike).
In a normal/low lvl tier, taking in consideration how late each character joins (less time = less magic + stats) best characters should be Terra, Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Gau and Gogo.
It's been a while but I followed a guide, Locke could hit for 40,000 hit points in one turn with the right gloves and swords ! Locke is the most powerful by a long shot.
Awww, now I understand how you "objectively" tier out characters...it's based off how much they can go boom at end game. I get ya. it's not so much based off of utility, nor is it based off of their uses throughout different points of the game (typically early, mid, and late) but rather than at the end of the game.
Gau's use for instance completely runs out by end game, is absolutely out classed through Locke, Terra, and Celes, through sheer equipment. Before World of Ruin, I can admit that he's best. Even further, Setzer and Cyan are admittedly weak characters as well...But you don't add Mog here because he can equip Snow Muffler? The issue here is that Strago absolutely becomes more useful then Mog due to various lores (Aqua Rake, level 4 flare, grand train, Pearl Wind), let alone his own decent magic strength being the highest for Men. Again...I'm looking at utility here. Strago being able to take out random groupings of enemies seems more valid then having a possiblity for Mog to hit with Wind Slash or Surge. I suppose if you're using God Wind Gau...then yes, things are moot then, which maybe you're taking that into consideration.
That said, wouldn't you be more prone to placing Locke at S Tier instead? With his ability to Dual wield Illumina, and Valiant knife...Offering and Genji Glove for max damage...and if not that then Valiant Knife + Paladin shield + Offering ...
Sabin absolutely S-Tier due to early Bum Rush
Terra+Celes absolutely S-Tier due to high innate Magic and ability to equip Illumina + Palladin Shield
Edgar + Shadow + Gau at the A-Tier for skeans + Stars early/mid game ... Edgar being great early game, then coming back in mid game with Pearl Lance (25% Pearl cast) with Dragon Boots and Dragon Horn ... and Shadow with free X-Zone
The rest at low tier / C Tier (Gogo, Setzer, Cyan) ... and clearly Umaro at F Tier

I disagree with Gau's God Tier placement. Any character in this game can be godlike if you strategically use Esper level up bonuses, and the amount of time it takes spent grinding on the Veldt with Gau to learn his Rages could be better spent on a more powerful, controllable character boosting up their Magic level.
I could argue that any time spent leveling would be better spent beating the game, and you do not need esper level stats to beat the game. Although in the speedrunning community, Celes is focus leveled in the WOR to learn Ice 3. But as soon as she learns Ice 3 at level 42, she can solo the rest of the game by buffing her magic with gear such as the magus hat, she can reach 9999 damage by level 42 with NO esper stat levels.
@@xjohnreese9488 To your first point I could argue that any time spent beating Final Fantasy 6 could be better spent not playing the game at all and instead learning a life skill, forging lasting relationships with other people, or bettering yourself in some way. FF6 is an easy game and doesn't require any grinding to beat. This isn't a conversation about whether someone should speedrun through the game, or whether they should level their characters up to godlike status and utilize game mechanics to min/max stats, it's a conversation about who the best characters are.
@@acidwizard6528 Yes and you don't have to speedrun the game to utilize the points I made and you stated the convo is about characters, and tricking out a character via esper stats is a terrible benchmark, as ANY character can be tricked out via espers. It comes down to natural speed and class mechanics.
A lot of this stuff I didn't even know until I looked at speedrunners. I use many speedrunning strats whilst playing casually, for knowledge in learning how to play more efficiently, besides blindly sticking to some character with terrible mechanics, and using esper stat gains to support this argument...when you could be much more efficient by simply learning the mechanics of the game better...besides using esper level up gains as a crutch.
If you watch twitch, I would recommend watching Dyne_Nuitari , he is a speedrunner, and I have learned a lot about how to be more efficient from this guy.

Umaro does such for all the reasons you lay out, but he's super helpful in the Fanatics Tower. I only use him when I have an extra space to fill, though.

I don't think this video is very researched. No one plays Edgar for tools in World of Ruin anymore. Him and Mog are essentially just jumping permanently.
Cyan's Bushido is pretty useful with quick. Since you don't have to worry about time in quick you can use any Bushido twice without damage worries.

As far as magic goes, I think it’s over rated in this game till end-game because it’s usually not needed between Edgar’s tools, Shadow’s throw, Sabin’s Blitz, Mogs Dance, Setzer occasional Slots, Gau’s Cat Scratch, and Umaro’s random attacks
Really a tier list in this sort of game all just depend on how you play the game. If you like to conserve magic, this tier list almost gets turned upside down

Correct, anyone Dual wielding Atma weapons/valiant knife with Offering/Geji Glove are God Tier. Celes, Locke, Edgar and Terra by default should be the top tier characters. Putting anyone else above them is ignoring math/facts.
Umaro is great for the Coliseum, since the place already plays into his mechanics. Also, he saved my fight against the ice dragon, since the ice dragon literally could not kill him, all it did was heal him. I just left to make some tea.
He does a lot of damage and is one less thing to worry about.
I love Umaro for his ability to complete a no command run. Yet anyone able to use Magic in this game is OP. I agree with your list if magic is unavailable. Otherwise it feels like a clone effect. Terra is great in low level runs.
I've always used Terra and Celes in every playthrough. while the other two just depend on my preference at the time.
Something I can't believe I didn't realise until my current playthrough and that is the fact Shadow is Relm's father. Which explains so much now that I know this.

Yep. While never said directly in any version of the game there was apparently an interview back in 1995 that confirmed.this to be true.
Which explains why Interceptor who usually hates anyone that isn't Shadow instantly warms up to Relm. Plus Shadow is the only other one that can equip Relm's momento ring which is a keep sake from her mother.
There are other things that hint towards it. However those two in particular always stuck out as strange to me when I first played it many years ago.

I know right! I've been replaying the GBA version the last week or so and had just gotten to the part where you save Shadow from the Behemoth Kings. Seeing the flashback scene of interceptor trying to get Shadow to turn back and Shadow mentioning he had a daughter... all the while he is resting in Strago and Relm's house it just kinda came to me.
Wasn't expecting when I tried looking it up to actually be confirmed to be true.
I figured it was gonna just be something along the lines of that one theory that Gogo might actually be Setzer's dead friend/lover/rival. You know something some people might think, but have no concrete proof about.

Your party in FFIV is forced all the way along. You can’t swap out any characters whenever you want. The storyline controls at all times who you have in your party.

I would put locke and setzer on the same tier. They both rely on Master scroll combo and I think setzer doesn't need to be as high level for fixed dice to do their thing relative to locke's valiant knife.
I mean on a series note. Locke. Offering and Genji glove with Atma Weapon and Valiant Knife for 8 hits of 9999 since they ignore def and scale off health.
For the old school SNES version my list would be something like this:
1. Anyone who has learned magic/doom
2. Celes with offering/Illumina/atma weapon
3. "Wind god gau"
Many people dont seem to like them but my personal favorites are : Relm, Mog, Gau, Edgar… never thought Celes was that good, im surprised she made it to top tier. I barely ever use the Runic ability.
The reason Celes is good is because even ignoring her runic ability, she is highly available (being missing only during the section between Vector and floating continent) and has really good magic stats in a game where magic is very broken.
In FFVI, being missing from the party for a significant number of levels hurts you bad since esper bonuses make up the majority of your late game stats.
The top 6 are
1. Terra
2. Celes
3. Locke
4. Mog
5. Edgar
6. Gau
Because they have the best end game equipment options. Xfight with duel wielding is the most powerful command against single targets. Xmagic with quick is the most powerful command for aoe damage, aoe curing, and other nifty stuff magic can do.
If you want to be cheap, technically God tier is both gau and gogo because one of their rages can control all enemies in the game including bosses. Kinda like Ernst in suikoden 5.
My team was terra, cus of morph increases with xfight, Celes with xfight and runic is nifty, Locke with xfight because it’s convenient to always have steal, and mog with xmagic and paladin shield as my tank caster... also mululu charm makes the whole Game a cake walk.

If I had to rank characters... God Tier: Terra, Celes, Edgar, Shadow, Relm. Top Tier: Setzer (with reels bug), Gau, Mog. Mid Tier: Locke, Sabin, Cyan (with or without berserker bug), Shadow, Gogo. Bottom Tier: Setzer (without reels bug), Umaro. In the end, all characters can do 9999 dmg, so it comes down to what they can block/evade and the utility they can provide.

fixed dice + offering says hello. makes him an absolute monster with no stat investment required whatsoever.
thank you for not putting gogo any lower though, as most do. i don't care about their weaknesses, any character that can cast ultima twice in one turn for no MP cost is good. their utility is also unprecedented. i can't tell you how much i hate having locke around just for the once-in-a-while occasion that something has something *really* worth stealing. gogo handles that perfectly.
i don't care to factor in the whole esper-stat-farming crippling gogo because yaaaawn. it's really easy to make anyone else a broken character to the point that distinguishing them is almost pointless. and also really boring and time-consuming. i just took on kefka with setzer+gogo+mog+umaro. setzer was the only character i bothered grinding (and i regret it), never even used the others before the tower, didn't use the offering or gem box, and i still annihilated him. grinding characters just saps all the fun out.
(these two are my favs though so i'm totally biased)
As much as I hate to admit it, I think objectively Mog is the best character. Dont get me wrong though, video was awesome and resulted in me subbing to the channel.
Don't know you can build characters' stats as you want with the equiped Esper?
Cyan being crap tier? Give him Bismarck just before he lvl up and he will do a ton of dmg with his weapons. Also, as second stats to raise up with Esper is vigor. Equip him with Genji Glove and perform the quadraslam and he will hit 8times.
Celes. Dual illuminas with black belt. Just runic and let enemies attack you. she'll block every magic and physical attack and absorb magic plus destroy you without you having to press attack. and if she's in yellow life and she gets attacked, she will counter with her limit break
People hate on umaro but with the right relics in the right encounters hes untouchable and has decent damage, also allows you to focus on your other 3 characters. He wrecks in the phoenex dungeon as well as the magic only dungeon, wheres hes the only character capable of physical attacks. + you never have to grind him up or teach him magicite.
The problem with Sabin being lower tier (for me anyways) are his equipment options, or lack therof.

Your list is very flawed. Edgar, Celes, Terra, Locke> everyone else. Dual wielding Atma/ultima weapons/valiant knife with offerings does more damage than anything you suggest. Magic is strong, but that's still more damage dealing 9999X 8. In the GBA you can steal as many of the best weapons as you like blowing away your magical tier list.
Your list is quite skewed from most people's lists.
1. First off, almost every website or known player puts Edgar as top tier.
Magic is awesome (especially with things like Gem Box and Quick + Ultima to yield 4x9999 damage) but nothing can stop the overpoweredness of Genji Glove/Master Scroll's 8x9999 damage. Use Quick and it becomes 16 x 9999 damage.
Any character that can use Offering(Master Scroll) and Genji Glove ability to the fullest is top tier. Therefore, Edgar is absolutely top tier. He can equip the best items in the game and be set up to yield 8x9999 damage in a single move. Plus, he can be used for Dragon Horn+Dragon Boots and Holy Lance if you decide not to give him the Genji/Master Scroll setup.
Locke is actually a poor man's version of Edgar. His Valiant Knife and Atma Weapon(Ultima Weapon) setup is good, but in the later versions of FF6, you can get multiple Lightbringers(Illuminas) and Atma Weapons, so Valiant Knife is unnecessary.
2. Gau is mid tier for the very fact that his Rage is unreliable.
3. Cyan should be higher, in Low Tier at least. In older versions of FF6, his Bushido charge was a bottleneck. In later versions of FF6, though, his Bushido charging time is just like casting spells, so you don't have to wait for him to finish charging in order to use other characters. And his Quadra Slice ability ignores defense and hits four times for 4x 9999 damage.
I disagree with you on Gau on God Tier, he should be on low Tier and here's why.
I absolutely hate using Gau in Final Fantasy 6, all of his Rage attacks makes him berserk and you can't control him. I hate having the annoying hassle of using leap on the Veldt. Good lord it takes so many hours and it's super boring to get rage moves. It doesn't help that the random enemy encounters in the game are random, I don't like having to use leap every time and then you have to have 3 party members enter a random encounter battle just so Gau can join you back. I'd rather turn him into an Imp and make him a fighter instead or cast magic spells. Besides that, Rage becomes obsolete later on in the game, In the end I leave him out of Kefkas Tower.
Strago is actually pretty useful if you have the patience to run around to build up his Step Mine or Traveler spell can penetrate through enemy defenses especially against enemies like Intangir and I like the Mighty Guard spell he has.
Gogo is my absolute favorite character in the game sure he can't get status growth but being able to choose 3 ability slots and mimic attacks made me go for him.
I also like using Mog as his Moogle Charm turns off random encounters though you get it late in the game but I don't like using his dance moves.
Relm does have some abilities although I didn't like sketch, I like control ability.
I agree with you on Umaro, as he's berserk which is the reason why I leave him out of Kefkas Tower along with Gau.
I didn't like Setzers Slot and I didn't like using Coin Toss either. Cyan is an okay fighter though I don't use is swdtech very much.
My favorite characters I use are Terra, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Celes, Gogo, Strago, Mog, but I will always leave out Gau and Umaro.
Give Setzer Fized Dice, Genji Glove (Dice as the 2nd weapon) and Master Scroll/Offering and he'll be God Tier

Surely GoGo is top because hidden in the menu you can assign literally all other characters unique abilities and have multiple.
Also maybe it's different on later versions, but Gau and Mog can both take 1hp per attack with Snow Scarf.
