I have a Dell Dimension T450 myself, which I upgraded with a 3dfx Velocity 100 (Voodoo 3 1000, basically), a 1GHz Pentium III, and soon, an additional Sound Blaster 16 allowing better compatibility for playing DOS games, which will go alongside my Sound Blaster Live! Value, which I'll use for Windows games, especially those with EAX support. Ever since the 1GHz upgrade, it's been running like an absolute dream.

@@arizonapalms That's a good time period. Technologically advanced enough for the internet, simple phones, laptops, consoles... but also far enough from the internet becoming much less free, games being released unfinished, having less privacy, and being glued to our phones.
Windows 98 works perfectly with 1Gb or even 2Gb RAM, provided you've done the R. Lowe patch. You can dismiss it as much as you like, doesn't make it not work. I have several Win98 and even Win ME machines running perfectly for years with zero issues.
For his build, 1 gb of ram is a waste. Since there isn't much software around that time frame that'll make use of that so 512mb is appropriate. If you start using software from around 2004 or later that is... you'll need at least a gigabyte ram and most likely you are using Windows XP.
I got my Retro Win98 SE/Plus! PC 3 years ago, someone threw it in the garbage complete with Mouse, Keyboard and CRT Monitor and Windows98SE Label Serial Key on the side. It looked really well taken care of, like if they opened up in late 90's and just store it away until they finally threw away. So i took home without hesitation. It initially came with a 433MHZ Pentium3 and 128MB RAM and shitty integrated Intel i810 Graphics and Realtek AC'97. I shortly upgraded it to a 733MHZ Pentium3 CPU and then again a few months later and settle for a Pentium3 at 1GHZ. I maxed the RAM to 512MB and also got a GeForce FX 5200, and also got a PCI Sound Blaster Live!. I can basically bullzoder through any game from the 80s all the way up to 2004, heck i was even able to run Land of the Dead Road to Fiddler's Green and Evil Dead Regeneration with a few slowdowns. Love my Retro Win98SE/Plus! nearly as much as my modern main PC.
You know you are like the only one that knows how to handle expansion cards of a vintage sort and the other TH-camr to build upgrade Windows 98 PCS areas incorrectly and risk damaging cards not holding them and I carefully handling them and placing them in places that don't carry a static charge risks xcetera.
Awesome blast from the past! I basically had this exact PC specs-wise, except I got it from Gateway! What a time, I really loved PC gaming at that time!
I thought of going with a legit Windows 98 or XP build, but decided to build a "faux" retro PC lol. Had this old vostro I got from work that had windows 8 on it from like 2012. Gutted it completely save from the DVD drive and PSU. Upgraded it with a RX 6400, modern mobo, intel 12400k, 32gb ram. Hooked it up to a Dell VGA CRT from 2000 using a displayport to VGA adapter. Feels surreal af being able to play everything from Doom 1993 to Doom Eternal on the same PC. Modern games look AMAZING on a VGA CRT at 1280x1024 btw!
@@arizonapalms idk, thought about it, but it does makes for a badass SFF PC with a disc drive atm. Perfect for some emulation at a homies crib since it can fit in a backpack with it's current Vostro SFF case. Even can fit a keyboard, mouse, and a couple of Xbox controllers.

I just wonder why mentioning you didn't went with more than 512MB to avoid Windows complications, then proceeding to use a modified version of Windows with drivers and other stuff included that could bring other kind of problems. A suggestion to avoid reinstalling Windows in case of driver problems: dual boot with an NT version, then create a ZIP/RAR (fastest compression is enough) of the Windows and Program Files directories. If anything goes wrong, just delete the 2 folders and extract the backed up ones.
You have a good point! It's more about minimising risk of complications. I could play it safe and install from retail and patch up from there. Kugee's "Redtoast" includes useful patches (such as the USB mass storage driver - lifesaver!) and I've had plenty of luck with it. Key word there is luck. Before it was released, I would use 98lite on a lot of my lower and high end machines. However with going over 512mb of RAM I usually always have *something* weird happening even with RLoew's PATCHMEM installed. As I say, Windows98 is a bit of a devil. Sometimes everything goes right, sometimes everything goes wrong, sometime's it's a bit of both. Completely anecdotal, your mileage may vary etc. etc. As for backups, I'm not a big dual booter but I see your point. I just have my Norton Ghost process down to a science, so it's very little effort. I can also boot from a floppy disk or via PXE and quickly rebuild a system from there. Perhaps something for a future video!

How big is the hdd and how many games have on it.?
The game drive is about 300GB total, at least 100 games
