This isn’t talked about enough, but Demetrious Johnson’s main training partner for years was Bibiano Fernandes who was probably the best 135er in the world outside of the UFC at the time

He started out training in a garage, w literally just a bag (filled with SAND!!!!) and he went crazy in the garage training highkicks every day … Later on the guy went to the army, was part of a Anti Terrorism Squad (ATJ Lučko) aaand when he was a Pro Fighter the guy had some sparring partners - He trained in his gym just like he does now with Professionals like Ante Delija, Satoshii Ishi, to name a few… He is a real fighter and sportsman

It also limited Conor's growth as a fighter as well. After becoming the double champ it was a good time to start branching out to other gyms and learning new tricks to stay on top and reach his potential. Imagine if Conor went to City Kickboxing or Tiger Muay Thai, those gyms could have done wonders for him as a fighter.

My coach once told me about a buddy of his who was an account, guy never had a fight in his life, in the ring or otherwise. But the man loved kickboxing so much he trained almost everyday and was one of Semmy Schilt's best sparring partners.

That type of tourments are way harder than a single MMA match, anyone who has competed at least once would tell you that to fight onve every weekend is crazy hard. I think you see that a lot with the Aussie/NZ fighters. Small gyms and teams that are immensely talented. CKB for example is not a big gym, looks like a warehouse thats been kitted out, yet with Eugene and his staff they have cranked out a lot of top fighters and champions. Whittaker I think has his own thing going on and runs his camp out of the BJJ gym he owns. I think it's basically him, his wrestling/head coach, his bjj coach and his dad as permanent staff, everyone else they bring in. Volkanovski runs his camps mainly out of Freestyle Fighting Gym, then does the odd trip to Tiger Muay Thai and finishes in CKB, but Joe Lopez from FFG is his head coach, even when someone like Eugene is in his corner. It's a tiny, tiny gym in Windang, and he's run all of his camps in there during covid, with no trips to either Thailand or NZ to train.

Amazing how some of the best or greatest MMA fighters of all time, came and trained from just small local gyms.
I think you see that a lot with the Aussie/NZ fighters. Small gyms and teams that are immensely talented. CKB for example is not a big gym, looks like a warehouse thats been kitted out, yet with Eugene and his staff they have cranked out a lot of top fighters and champions.
Whittaker I think has his own thing going on and runs his camp out of the BJJ gym he owns. I think it's basically him, his wrestling/head coach, his bjj coach and his dad as permanent staff, everyone else they bring in.
Volkanovski runs his camps mainly out of Freestyle Fighting Gym, then does the odd trip to Tiger Muay Thai and finishes in CKB, but Joe Lopez from FFG is his head coach, even when someone like Eugene is in his corner. It's a tiny, tiny gym in Windang, and he's run all of his camps in there during covid, with no trips to either Thailand or NZ to train.
