I fluctuate around 183-191 lbs for my walking around weight. I always grapple around my walking around weight, and sometimes I’ll be small for whatever weight class I signed up to grapple in. The #1 entry on this list is part of the reason why I have no intention of going lower than 170 lbs whenever I make the transition to MMA. Eating disorders run in my family history, I have some mental health struggles that sometimes leave me with a lot of unhealthy food cravings whenever my daily medication wears off, and I make incredibly bad choices from the stress of being hungry or thirsty. Sometimes you just have to deal with the fact that you’re not a giant in your weight class in order to preserve your longevity as a functional human being.
I’m an elite marathoner and the claim that anyone could put up 140 mile weeks while training mma, the single most brutal kind of training there is, for 4 hours every day is literally absurd and nobody should take it seriously. I run 110 mile weeks and unless you are crazy specialized it is basically impossible to do this
This video hit me in the feels. I'm just a recreational grappler. One of the main reasons that I compete at all is to keep my weight from getting away from me as I get older. The flip side is, the things you do to be able to hit a specific number on a certain date are decidedly not good for you. I've done several of the things on this list, and while they all really worked as far as moving the number on the scale, I'm convinced that my performance suffered as a result.
Thank you for being honest. I'm 3-0 ammy mma and 40-2 ammy kickboxing. I walk around at 180. The cut to 146 definitely took something away from me, at very least in the motivation stakes. The 138lb cut definitely made me a shell of myself. I once passed out just before having to go to the ring, I couldn't even hear my coach giving instructions. All the best, bro. It's awesome to know that I have something in common with JDS. I have a condition that's actually a terminal mitochondrial myopathy but the whole thing started with me being hospitalized on five occasions with rhabdo. I would go on a half-mile walk around the neighborhood and the next day my feet would be three times their size and my legs would be so swollen that if I put socks on their would be a mark across my calf for 36 hours. This kept occurring and then they took blood test and my blood tests were all bizarre as if my body's immune system was just quitting while other parts were attacking. It took two years of specialist until a geneticist found out that I have a thing called KSS which is 50% deletion of the mtdna in my brain. That's the energy source for your body so as more and more of it dies your heart dies your liver dies so at Max I have maybe two more years to live and I'll be blind when I die. who says I can't bring the happy news? Anyhow it could be a little longer, it could be a little less but it all started with rhabdo so JDS to the max.😊

It's getting harder to get around I think that people fantasize about what they would do if they knew they weren't going to live for a long time but most of the time that they get that kind of death sentence there most likely too ill to take advantage of knowing that they don't have long. It's another one of those catch 22 situations that life is so fond of giving you. I do know that you should not wait for a death sentence to start living. Like I said it's probably too late by the time you get that.

That stuff about the yo-yo diet is no joke, in two years of competing I’ve frequently fluctuated 20-30 pounds of pure fat between competing and off times, then mix an injury in there and I’ve put myself in one hell of a spot we’re working out of as I type this

When i would cut 10 to 15 pounds below my natural weight to wrestling in high school i would eat myself (literally) sick and still think about nothing but eating (while being on the verge of throwing up) and this would last days sometimes. I can't even imagine what goes on inside these guys minds during and after those weight cuts. Does weight cutting contribute to eating disorders? yes. 100 percent.
If Davis isn’t lying (he is) then he should retire from fighting and become a professional marathon runner. He’d be the number 1 guy in the sport probably win a gold medal with those numbers and not look like a holocaust survivor doing it unlike every other marathon runner.
Dieting is hard. 23&me says I should be 178-180 so I made it there. But I looked best at 165-170. Less blubber to carry around and more definition in my body. But I’m close to getting back to where I was.
The worst part is the solution is to stop wight cutting and fight closer to your natural weight but so many fighters cut so much weight it's basically mandatory all mma promotions need hydration testing alongside pre and post fight weigh ins
While in the Army I had to try to cut weight from 120 to 114 and never was successful. We were weighed immediately after our PT test, so dehydration isn't an option. For 2 weeks I'd eat nothing but salad and plain chicken, drink nothing but water and carbo load the night prior. I would also make myself vomit before being weighed. Was always 116. After my best score I was told I needed to drop muscle and work out less to make weight, AS IF THAT MAKES SENSE.
@@clintelliston9687 because females between 18 to 22 that are 4'11" are only allowed to weigh between 100 and 114. I was a size 4 but considered overweight. I have always carried a lot of muscle in my legs and all the running just made me put on even more muscle.

These evaluations were not supervised by medical professionals at all. Just who ever was in charge of the unit and everything was compared to a chart. BMI was also determined by the same people and that method has since been replaced and proven to be completely inaccurate. Your ability to do well in PT and make weight can effect your career because you have to sign forms everytime this happens. It's unhealthy and encourages eating disorders. I choose not to risk having a seizure or stroke due to dehydration and do well on my PT test but that isn't a choice I should have had to make. People have died due to dehydration in the military and there was always at least one person at each test who would faint. Frankly I struggled and felt like I was on the verge of being too small already and only met 2 women smaller while in the service. I trained hard in order to do well in PT, 6.5 mile runs are NOT easy, especially when your legs are short. I signed up knowing it would be hard and rose to that occasion. I wasn't aware that my body would be so closely monitored and that 2 lbs would somehow diminished all of my hard work and accomplishments.
