I am 15 years old and just starting to get actually ok at spearfishing. I have been thinking of upgrading my spear setup, and this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Living in northern Cali it would be so sick to shoot a giant lingcod with that spear.
In my opinion, the best gun for a ling is a medium pneumatic, like a 70cm. You can pump them up so you have a lot of power for the size of the gun. I use a euro five prong and slam them in the head. This, plus a good bright light is essential for finding those 20 plus pounders in the holes.
Learning spearfishing on the Big Island recently and it has easily become my favorite thing about living here.
My kids and I love your channel, and watch it multiple times almost daily. We're somewhat new to spearfishing, and working on our hunting techniques. My older son wants to catch his first uhu. I'm looking for a nice moana kali, or mu. For my family and I, your words of wisdom are like those given from a professor. There isn't a day that we are out in the water that I don't hear, "Ryan said to do it this way," or "I saw this on Ryan's video, let's try it". I would use the headhunter pole spear for shoot all the basic reef fish in Hawaii and maybe some big game Uluas or omlius , kahalas, every thing keep up the videos love them 🤙🏽🙏

My name is Cole Foley and I live in Sarasota, FL. I’ve been free diving for about 3 years now and have been getting deeper and deeper in depth. The pole spear is perfect for where I hunt as there’s plenty of rocks, structures, and artificial reefs that truly require the flexibility and ease of a pole spear. My goal is to shoot my very first Black Grouper using the Headhunter Roller, that would be sick!

I have only recently started spear fishing in Southern Cali and the lock down only made it worse but may have helped in the long run. Gave me more motivation to spend more time on the forums and find better info on the sport and my area rather than just going out and trying random spots. Just shooting anything with that pole spear would be amazing since I am still in the stoked to get anything I can stage. Haha. Might be taking a trip to Bahamas soon to so the pole spear would come in handy then. Thanks for all the great videos keep it up man. Helped me survive the lockdown.
I would like the pole spear for dentex here in Italy. Since I'm 13, I'm not allowed to use a spear gun so I would like to have a "good pole spear" to shoot fish... (you have to be 16 to shoot a spear gun, hear in Italy)
Because of you I just got into spearfishing. Going for a course in spearfishing in two days, also a freediving course next week. Well I would start off with catching the most common fish here in Denmark, the flats and codfish. Love your videos. Have great day.
My dive buddy and I ran into a 16'+ tiger shark diving in between Lanai and Molokai. It was very very aggressive to the point where we had to hit it multiple times in the snout as it was checking us out. It was honestly the only time I ever was fearful for my life because of a shark. This thing dwarfed our 2 man Kayak, and we didn't even chance trying to get back in the kayak because we had fish on our belt. We were about 400 yards out in 60' depths, and it chased us all the way to shore up until 10' waters. I will never forget how big and muscled that majestic animal looked... or how sharp its teeth were! A captain buddy of mine said he and his crew saw the same shark a week later in that area eating a dolphin... CRAZY.

i have never used such polespears and i was always amazed by how good they are. coming from curacao we have a lot of dog snappers, mangrove and cuberas... would love to get any of these with this spear!!!!

This is a really great description. Now I know a new things. One of the best is the shark attack. Here Maldives, the Shark coming many times I catching fish on polespear.
Deffinatly dart some tautog and try for my first striped bass with that beauty! Might have to even take a trip to the Bahamas!

I live down in Southern Florida and currently just use a 3 prong. I'd be ecstatic to use a proper slip tip and roller polespear! I'd really like to get a decent Hogfish with it, i've never even shot one before!

Hey Ryan! Actually, there is a ciguatera test. They do it regularly in the Canary islands, where large groupers and amberjacks (among other fish) could carry it.
My friend took me out spearfishing yesterday for the first time off Dana Point CA. He shot a sheepshead which I made ceviche out of. Ryan, I've been enjoying your videos and getting motivated for the sport. keep up the good work. I want to win the spear and harvest some more sheepshead and many other fish as I learn the species and size limits. Thanks for the knowledge you share.

Would love to put that pole spear in a spanish mack or cobia down here in Oz. With Ciguatera, just remember that it also bioacculmates in you aswell, you might not get symptoms right away but if you eat enough fish with low levels of the toxin, you may still get Cigutera poisoning. I live on a small island where we are very conscious about coral/reef maintenance, so I've always believed that pole spears are the best option for hunting delicate waters. I would love to go out and shoot some yellowtail snappers with one of these!

Im going out to do a Bimini trip in early July to go for some hoggies, grouper, and snapper! The new roller would come in clutch for the trip! always nice to add another pole spear to the collection to replace my older one.

New England Spearo up here diving in the murk shooting tog, flounder, cod, and stripers. Absolutely love freediving and I really appreciate the information and awesome visuals on your channel. I only hunt with my Predator PS because I enjoy honing my technique and only want to make a kill shot worthy of ending that beautiful creature's life. It takes time, technique, patience, and true grit to be successful with a Pole Spear. That's why I love them. Anyway, good luck this summer and stay safe!
Another great video! If I had that roller pole spear I figure the fish I would target the most are papios (Jack's) and if I get super lucky some uku (green jobfish/ gray snapper) as well.

Ryan my brother another good one! The pole spear is just not used much if at all here in South Africa. We need some more exposure on it here so if I won the comp I'd be shooting King Mackerel first followed by numbers of Queen Mackerel and hopefully a Dorado or two! More importantly Id be filming it all spending hours on the edit and release it on Reel Excitements channel! Thanks for the awesome content my brother!
I think I would use it to fish the grounds my father did when he lived there in the Bahamas in the late 60’s and 70’s. I’ve never been, but all his stories makes me feel I have. lol

Had a great time learning to spearfish this past season in Bahamas while cruising the islands on our sailboat. I would love a new spear instead of the crappy yellow one I was using. Would love to shoot some larger fish this next season. Maybe a nice big hogfish.
I would be targeting omilu on the smaller side. Would definitely put that spear to good use.
