I have the same model ski. Your battery was back there on the starboard side presumably very close to fully submerged in salt water! It's seems very lucky you were able to start your engine. I'm glad you made it back ok. Your experience makes me think I should do something better about securing those hatches on my ski. I'm not sure what. Maybe some sort of safety pin to prevent accidental unlocking of the hatch. Anyway, nice fish and enjoy your next trip out. Trouble free I hope. 👍
Thanks for watching mate, I'm pretty sure the battery was close to submerged, honestly surprised it was able to start so was very lucky there. Having hatches there is a bad design isn't it, it's good the newer skis from 2016 doesn't have hatches there anymore and it's a fully sealed area.
I'm glad you made it back safely, you and your ski. My advice is to install a bulge pump with a waterproof 3way switch so you can have it on, off, and outo mode. Many videos on TH-cam DIY. Keep doing what your doing and inspiring us
My ski has same hatches. Forever having issues with water ingress. Have you replaced the rubbers on them? Do you normally come back bone dry or take on water after every run?
@timwilliams7774 yup I've replaced the rubber seals in the past, they get to a point where they get very thinned out. Always come back with a bit of water in the hull, never bone dry
Seriously scary situation, I can relate because go offshore a bit myself in the Gulf of Thailand. I was curious, does your year Seadoo have a bilge clearing device that works off of suction created by the jet pump? My 2018 Waverunner VX has such a device but one time I had a problem with the internal backflow part of it and I took on some water, luckily at a lake instead of the sea. I plan on adding an electric bilge pump as well that will run off the second battery.

Hey mate, cheers for watching, yes I think that would work, I was thinking about that option at the time, but I think that getting back on the ski would be really hard after that due to the inbalance in weight in the ski, the water would just roll to whichever side the ski was leaning

I'm surprised that nobody suggested that you should install a bilge pump when you were setting this ski up. It's important for any PWC in my opinion but it's an absolute must for any PWC used for fishing. I fit a bilge pump to every ski I own, it's cheap insurance. Glad you made it back OK, and nice video.

@@FishoDavo I recommend the Whale SuperSub 1100GPH bilge pump with a 3-way switch. It wires directly to the battery and runs automatically when it detects water. You can also switch it on manually. You can also install it without a switch which simplifies wiring, keeping it in auto mode.

Thanks, I think it's a 5inch fish finder from lowrance, it's permanently fixed to the glove compartment using a 3D printed enclosure. The glove compartment still opens no problem
Close call mate glad you got back to the ramp though. My old GTX had the same hatches and they always made me nervous because you always get water lapping up over the back, terrible design really

Had that happen on my Honda. Rough conditions trolling made it harder to detect but my ski was gradually sitting deeper into the water. More water in footwells, back sitting lower. Hard to tell when it’s gradual. Unbeknown to me a plain metal cooling system hose clamp under the engine ( all the rest were stainless steel) had finally broke and the hose came off. So as long as that engine was running the hull was filling with water. The hair standing on end feeling that something is wrong but you don’t know what it is. Followed my gut feeling and got back quick as I could breaking all speed limits never taking my hand off the throttle until back at ramp. Pull out on trailer, have quick look under seat and water at top of battery. Took me ages to find the problem. Had to use a mirror eventually to see what was underneath the engine. One rusted broken metal hose clamp hidden under engine. You can imagine my thoughts being a Honda, which I trusted for my first ski. You could hardly set a better trap for your enemies.
I don't know this model , what hatch is this ? Sounds like a bad design. Would you have been able to get in the waer and close the hatch ? or reach it while staying dry ?
It's a 2012 model, from 2016 it doesn't have this issue anymore. I did try to reach back and almost flipped which was the part of the video after I put the fish in. Are you sure the open hatch was your only issue?? Once you started moving, then you won't get water coming into the hatch anymore, and the venturi tubes will drain the hull... So with no water coming, your hull should have been empty by the time you got back to the ramp? Unless your venturi tubes are blocked/kinked?? Or you have another leak which kept letting water in while your venturi tubes tried to drain... Maybe check your carbon seal just in case? And check that your venturi tubes are fine...
@@FishoDavo 30$ US. Get it bro! Let's you know you have a leak, and buys you time. Run it off a separate power source so you don't drain your cranking battery in the chance there is ever a short in it.
@@FishoDavo very interesting. I just acquired a 1995 tiger shark. Been trying to learn as much as I can about jet skis as this is my first one. My old tiger shark has a small bilge pump that runs anytime the engine is running. I'm only a couple of months into owning a ski so this might be the dumbest question ever, but if i ever get into this situation I want to be able to act swiftly. I realise this would involve getting wet, and time being of the essence maybe a bit dicey, but with the bung system having a one way valve, would opening the bungs while at sea have done anything to help drain water out as well ?
Hey mate thanks for watching and commenting and it's not a dumb question at all. At the time I did think about getting in the water to close and lock the hatch, but in the end I didn't as my thinking was that the ski was already really imbalanced due to the water so getting back on the ski would of been impossible, it would of kept flipping over or the bottom may have sunk already. So in this instance I wouldn't of got in the water to open the one way bungs
Early model seadoo that you have was never built for fishing with those rear access hatches. Asking for trouble. New model seadoos dont have that problem. Another problem with your model jetski is the battery vent on the opposite side taking on water when not plugged in.
Very, very topical on Sea Doos.. carbon seal, weak hull etc.. that's why sea doo eliminated any door compartment behind the ski.if you put weight or pressure in those compartment water slick inside and you will sink

IMHO: If you've had the ski for a while, you should have known there was something off. At that point, you should’ve ridden close to shore and tried to fix it
Hee well things happen as low as you made it back and the ski had no damage good learning experience... Plus just so you know the reason why you start gain speed was because there is a mechanical builg in skis for safety that suck water out of your ski while your prop is spinning so if you leave the engine running water will go out as long as it doesn't come back in plus not sure if you know but if you remove your bungs while riding in case of water in the ski they are designed to drain your hull faster on the water then on land so if it happens again just start engine pull the bungs and ride no stop 😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing but an automatic bilge pump would at least warned you water was entering the ski allowing you to get on the problem before filling the ski up 😂
Thanks really great insight and knowledge, thanks for sharing this info with me. In this instance don't think I can open the bungs, there was so much water in there I think it was about to go under from the weight

Subbed!
Thank you!
As a last resort in a emergency, if you can open the drain plugs and get the craft moving forward it will suck the water out rather easily.
Thanks mate, that would be doable by getting in the water, but I think the ski would of been too unbalanced to try get back on at that stage
Bildge?
Stay close to shore
That’s one way to not burn the old carbon seal out. Internal liquid cooling.
Yeah it's a great design 🤣
Fish looked dead in the net
