  • THE LIFE OF QUEEN MARY I started out well, as Princess of England, heir to the throne and with two loving parents, Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Her world fell apart however, when her father became infatuated with Anne Boleyn and sought to annul his marriage to Catherine and declare his daughter illegitimate. In this Mary I documentary from History Calling, which is the seventh video in my Tudor monarchs’ series, we look at the early life of Mary I and at how this once happy child became a damaged Tudor princess and began down the road which would lead her to become not just the first Queen of England, but also Bloody Mary.

It will include the Princess’s reaction to her parents’ divorce/annulment, aka The King’s Great Matter and her time as a servant in the household of her baby half-sister, Princess Elizabeth. We will also look at topics including Mary I and religion (she was an ardent Catholic) and at the interactions between Mary I and her Spanish family, including her cousin Charles V of Spain, the Holy Roman Emperor, whom she relied on to protect her from her father’s wrath. Other historical figures who will be discussed include the Imperial ambassador Eustace Chapuys and Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury.

      Yep! It makes sense.
A lot of adult siblings with shared experiences of abusive parents grow up to have complicated relationships with each other throughout adulthood. (After all, abuse often pits the children against each other. The survival instinct to avoid the 'worst' physical/emotional attacks & fight for the most of the few praising and caring interactions their parents offer) But there's often, at least with hindsight, a shared understanding and compassion when they grow up; even if they still can't really seem to be close without resurfacing trauma.
And in the case of Elizabeth and Mary, the constant barrage of political machinations and in-fighting imposed on them made it impossible for them to ever truly mend their relationship. It's sad.

I do believe, Henry was very lucky that Mary did not flee to Spain. She would of almost certainly been used as a figurehead to invade England, and restore Catholicism.. likely bringing war and chaos to the land. Mary would of been set up as a puppet Queen in England, with Spain truly pulling the strings. Mary really did have a very hard childhood . She likely suffered from PTSD. Knowing more about Mary's early life certainly softened My view of Her. No child deserves the treatment She suffered

Yes, I think she would have been under Spain's thumb if she had gone there (though I think that would have been more to her liking than being under Henry's thumb). I also felt a lot more sympathy for her as I created the video than I have done previously. I'm working on the next one at the moment and things were still difficult for her even after Anne Boleyn's death. It's certainly evident that the actions that led to her becoming Bloody Mary didn't come out of nowhere. She'd been so damaged by the preceding 25 years of her life that I'm almost surprised she didn't act in an even worse manner once she finally obtained the throne.

On the actual topic of the vid: I knew Mary had been treated horribly, but I'm saddened to learn it was even worse than I thought! I keep thinking my opinion of Henry VIII couldn't get any lower, but _that man..._ I don't think Mary deserves as much criticism as she gets, being singled out as one of England's worst monarchs, but it's not cos I think of her dreadful suffering as an "excuse"- that gives me sympathy for her, but I think it's very simplistic to see it as the cause of her burning Protestants; I think it's one of many factors. The main reason I think the criticism she gets is unfair is that her religious persecutioun, as bad as it was, really pales in comparison to what so many other monarchs did- Edward I's invasions of Wales & Scotland, William I's Harrying of the North, Richard II putting down the Peasant's Revolt- but they're nowhere near as vilified as Mary. Anti-Catholicism & sexism, & I'm not cool with it.
Excellent! Really interesting & I learned lots!

There were further difficulties with him and with Edward later on (see the next video on Friday). I think Mary's reputation has suffered from a lot of double standards too. She did some terrible things, there's no getting away from that, but she's a lot more complicated that just a cookie-cutter 'baddie' and as you say, others did the same or worse and haven't been as vilified by the history books.

Thank you so much for this video. Rarely is any attention given to the psychological trauma Mary endured during her lifetime. What a shock it must have been for her to be a princess one day and a bastard the next--all at her father's doing! To be deprived of her dear mother at such a critical time was cruel. That her mother died of heart cancer is testament to how broken hearted Catherine must have been over the drastic changes in her life! Catherine could have never envisioned that Henry would discard her. I've always that it odd how Anne lost her boy child on the day of Catherin's funeral. There is so much psychology that has never been addressed during the lives of these Tudor women. I've often wondered how they must have felt, what they thought. Behind it all was Henry the VIII. Thank you, again. I look forward to the video next week!

I was saying in one of the other comments I just answered that I think Mary would be in need of serious therapy if she was alive today, but unfortunately there was nothing like that then, so I would imagine the trauma just festered. Yes, there are a lot of odd coincidences, such as Anne miscarrying the say of Catherine's funeral and Catherine's cause of death essentially being a broken heart. Henry certainly had a lot to answer for. I think there were probably relatively few people who came into prolonged contact with him as an adult who weren't damaged or even killed by the experience. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I knew Mary had a bad childhood from watching The Tudors when I was a teenager, but I never thought it was this heart-shattering! Now as a woman in my late 20s who's gotten a BA in History (with an emphasis on Medieval and American), I'm still just as fascinated by the Tudors as I was then. Having watched this video and learning more about Mary's early life, I am absolutely appalled at her treatment! Watching this almost made me tear up. My heart aches for this young woman. I wish I could just wrap my arms around her and give her a big hug, never letting her go, while also giving her a good talking-to about later things she would do and how she treated people. Learning more about her life and Henry's disastrous reign makes me contemplate how Prince Arthur would've no doubt ruled differently-how his reign would compare and contrast to his brother's. I want to believe that Arthur would've given Mary the love and encouragement she so desperately needed from a father, if he had had the opportunity to.

All caused by a Father She had adored! It's small wonder that Mary turned Her many year's of pent up grief, fear and confusion, into anger, hatred and vengeance, as soon as She had Any power

Yes, young Mary had suffered. But Elizabeth faired no better when it came to Henry's love. When Anne Boleyn was executed, things changed for Elizabeth: she was stripped of the title Princess, and was made illegitimate and taken out of the line of succession to name a few. Then she was put in the tower by her own sister, Mary I later on. I blame Henry.

I love your videos. I feel for Mary. She's not my favourite Tudor but she gets a bad rap. I think all of Henry's children are "damaged" and they all have their father in common. Imagine being the apple of your dad's eye for him to show utter distain and hatred for you? Then he told her she couldn't see her mother? She clearly developed mental health issues from how she was treated by someone who should love you unconditionally. I don't condone her behaviour as Queen but her dad was an arse and her younger brother thought she wasn't worthy so it isn't surprising she acted in such a manner.

I'm the same. She's never been my favourite either, but in putting together the videos on her I'm definitely gaining a better understanding of her and sympathy for her. I also think she's been judged unfairly against her father and siblings, who had easier lives yet did terrible things too (even Elizabeth), yet they don't have the word 'Bloody' in front of their name. I don't think I would be mentally strong enough to endure what she did, let alone as a teenager. She'd be in so much therapy if she was alive today. Glad you enjoyed the video. Got to admit I feel sorry for Mary, a rotten upbringing, disowned as illegitimate by her father, despised by her first stepmother, no wonder she became bitter and twisted! The picture you show of her doesn't do her any favours either, she looks to have a sly and vindictive face and then to top it all off she gets rejected by her husband! Mary should have been married off to a foreign prince when she was younger. It was unnatural that Mary remained on the royal marriage market for so long but unfortunately for her this was due in part to her value as a political asset. Contracts would be broken as Henry switched alliances from one European power to another, with Mary ending up waiting on the shelf. Mary's estrangement from her father during the tumultuous period of the annulment/marriage to Anne, further delayed Mary's marriage prospects. Whilst Henry treated his daughter abominably during this time, he also wasn't prepared to let her go abroad as it would have been too much of a risk to him politically.
Even after her mother's death, Mary languished in spinsterhood. I can't help but think how much happier and content Mary could have been if she had been married off earlier to a foreign prince. The tyranny of distance could have enabled her to escape the tyranny of her father....
Not that Mary would have welcomed that option given that Katherine had inculcated a strong sense of destiny in Mary as the legitimate heir to the throne. It was only under extreme duress that Mary capitulated (insincerely) to her father's threats, for her to accept her reduced status as "Lady Mary".

If that existed today above ground, it would likely be always under repair due to visitors likely seeking his grave out to give Henry VIII a piece of their mind about what they think of him. Henry imparted so much TRAUMA onto Mary as he did with many people. The splitting of her parents relationship and how it was done by the King, her father, was injurious to Mary's self worth and it created trust issues for her generally. It shattered her trust in people, I think if she could not trust her Dad. He debased her as he did her mother, and his abuses were emotionally cruel- to deliberately hurt. I cannot understand how she coped as well as she did, to be frank. Internalised a lot, tried to use prayer in doing so, but may well have been injurious to her physical as well as mental health in the end, especially if she was not eating right as I read she was always very thin. Mary burnt 54 people a year alive in the name of religion. Elizabeth hung 4 people a year in the name of religion. She was very much a LOT worse than Elizabeth. Mary was second only to her father, who is rightfully remembered as an evil tyrant and pretty much everyone’s least favourite English king

It is impossible not to pity Mary. While I would never say that her treatment justified the cruelty she would inflict on others once she became Queen, she was ultimately the product of her circumstances. Henry was a vindictive narcissist; Mary, Elizabeth and Edward were ultimately extensions of himself to pick up and play with when he wanted, never beings in their own right. It's incredibly sad. We also cannot forget Mary was a fair bit older than her younger siblings and had experienced a (seemingly) loving father only to later be the target of his (true) darker side. In comparison, Edward was always well regarded (if largely ignored far away from court) while Elizabeth's only redeeming quality in Henry's eyes was that she was the most like him. Again, I really pity Mary.

Henry like many kings was brutal. Those who like him will excuse or forget his ruthlessness. But one would think what he said on who is to succeed him would be law ( Until his death anyway ..because while he lived it didn't really matter who was next. ) . .. and that would settle the matter. It seems that a lot of death could have been avoided if the church let him marry Anne and England may have remained Catholic ... but there probably have been a civil war about religion soon after . it's funny/tragic how strong ideas are.
I wondered if you could do a video on Richmond's followers.? I have heard he had a loyal group..I get the feeling that some did not like the idea of a woman ( Mary or Liz) and maybe they thought less strife would occur if he were king. ?

I’m sorry, but there’s actually no reliable evidence of Anne Boleyn treating Mary cruelly. All of the primary sources claiming she was an awful stepmother are from Chapyus who hated Anne and didn’t even refer to her by name, only called her the concubine. There is evidence of Anne trying to reconcile Mary with the king if she’d accept her as Queen but Mary refused (which I don’t blame Mary for at all) and I really don’t think Anne’s character can ever be truly assessed due to all of the lies, rumors, gossip and the fact that Katherine of Aragon came from an extremely powerful family who made it their mission to besmirch both Anne and Elizabeth’s names and reputations. I also keep in mind the fact that the cruel treatment of Mary didn’t end when Anne Boleyn died, it in fact worsened immediately after her execution, and Jane Seymour didn’t actually do all that much to help Mary. She did try but she obviously wasn’t going to push it too hard since she had to look out for herself first. I think Henry was just a cruel bastard and I will say that a lot of the surviving documentation we have of Mary’s cruel treatment is again from Chapyus who was highly biased and would often report gossip as if it were fact in his letters to the emperor and it’s not hard to imagine him exaggerating and embellishing certain details to make the emperor more sympathetic to Mary’s plight-not saying she didn’t suffer greatly at her father’s hand, but a lot of details attributed to Anne are simply because Chapyus hated Anne and truly believed any of Henry’s misdeeds were due to her directly influencing him-which as we’ve obviously seen Henry VIII doesn’t let anyone truly have total influence over him and he definitely wouldn’t have done anything that he didn’t believe was of great benefit to himself. I don’t believe Anne was too concerned with Mary and again all the evidence of her humiliation can’t be attributed to Anne as so many solely blamed Anne for everything while refusing to place any blame on the king when history shows us Henry needed no one else’s help in being cruel to Mary.

There are handwritten notes from Anne to physically punish Mary. I don’t recall the source though. Anne was also cruel to her ladies. Anne was indeed very threatened by Mary. Plenty of supporting contemporary evidence. The only reason she wanted to ‘reconcile’ with Mary was because she wrongly thought she could trade ‘reconciliation’ for Mary recognizing her as Queen of England and Henry as supreme head of the church. Mary had values abs could not be bought

i don't believe anne felt any motherly affection for mary (they were only 9 to 15 years apart, after all) but i also don't believe she was a wicked stepmother. they simply didn't get along. mary was also 17 when anne married henry, so that also plays a factor. there is an exchange between them that i find funnier than i should, when anne thanked mary for bowing to her through a letter, only to receive one back with mary saying "i wasn't bowing to you 😒". feels very much like a teen's response. "YOU'RE NOT MY DADDDD" energy.

First off, thank you for saying annulment and not divorce. As you have correctly pointed out in other videos, divorce did not exist the way that we know it now, and for the other thing going by Henry's argument, he was never married in the first place so a divorce wouldn't be appropriate anyway. Even today, if Henry was correct, and annulment would be what would be sought.
Thank you for discussing Mary's life pre-queen-ship. People gloss over exactly what she went through just knowing that Henry reputated her. And that it doesn't excuse things that she did when she was a queen, at least it gives maybe, a reason. However, it must be noted that she hesitated to do many things that were later attributed to her. She did not have Jane Gray executed right away when she was crowned as she easily could have done. She was forced to do so when there were movements to put Jane Grey back on the throne. And, I believe, it has been shown in documents that a lot of the killings of Protestants were urged on by Philip and even demanded by Philip. Mary did not instigate them on her own. Furthermore, most people concentrate on the killings that happened in her reign but completely ignore all the killings of Catholics that went on in Henry the 8th, Edward VI, and Elizabeth reigns. Not to mention James the first of England and so forth. It wasn't until more modern times that Catholics could even hold office.
Not discounting the things that Mary did, but maybe throwing some light on them.

honestly watching this i can completely understand why she was so obsessed with her husband. i know the black legend suggests that he was some kind of monster but most contemporary accounts just suggest that he was a fairly decent man who, critically, did his best to get on well with his wives. (it would also be interesting to know, considering his own experiences, what her relationship was like with her stepson carlos of asturias.)

If you're going to attempt to complain that she had too many people killed you need to look at how many people her father had killed and her brother was just a nightmare. And even her younger sister whom she treated very well even though with the situation I would understand her not treating her as well as she did her sister lay in later years killed an awful lot of catholics. It was how things were done back then. Given all the people who were killed in order to wipe out her and her mother I can see I certainly understand her stand against protestantism.

I am very interested in British history and I like your videos, but honestly you move so quickly through the stories with so many details that I find I don’t really get much out of them! Perhaps some charts or diagrams rather than trying to use so many photos would be helpful. No one but a history major could keep up with all the dates, and verbally linking all the other related stories makes it even more confusing. I’ve watched a good many of your videos, and I wish could leave a more flattering comment. I really wanted to like them.

Anne Boleyn was cruel to Mary Tudor. She was jealous of Mary and Queen Katherine. Anne Boleyn would humiliate her as much as possible. An excellent book about Mary, Elizabeth, and Edward is A Crown For Elizabeth. She has never been portrayed accurately and Mary was a very attractive young woman. She was also kind and protective of Elizabeth when Anne fell from favor. I have yet to see her portrayed accurately. She was never present when her beloved mother died. One of the most idiotic movies about Mary is the movie Ann of a Thousand Days. Nothing but a junky movie.

Absolutely. She's less popular than Elizabeth, so I suspect that's why she hasn't had the same star treatment. She's usually just presented as an obstacle for Elizabeth to overcome on her way to becoming Gloriana.
