  • This special new film reveals an extraordinary Tudor life-story and an amazing creation. We meet the extraordinary Bess of Hardwick and go inside the incredible home she built, a spectacular construction in glass and stone that defined the elegance and grandeur of the Elizabethan age, typifying a woman who rose to the top of the Tudor tree.
Prof. Suzannah Lipscomb expertly explores the glorious rooms, luscious tapestries and intimate portraits that capture the remarkable personality of Bess and the Elizabethan dream-house she built in her own image.
We loved making this film with the National Trust, guardians of Hardwick Hall and so many other historic sites. You can find out more about Hardwick Hall at this website: www.nationaltr...

Fantastic. It's one of the most unique buildings I've ever seen. It's beautiful whilst also looking like a great big factory, albeit a very ornate one. So modern looking for such an old structure. Merry Christmas.

Tasked with the job of being Mary, Queen of Scots jailer, Elizabeth of Shrewsbury was duly rewarded for her loyalty to Elizabeth I. She knew her place, and expanded to fill it fully. She was fortunate in her marriages, was dealt many a lucky hand and played them magnificently.

"As a woman in Medieval/Renaissance England How could you get wealthy and powerful enough to build a house like this?"
The answer is rather simple and easy. 1) Marry someone wealthy, 2) have a number of rich relatives die leaving you as the only heir, 3) be Royal (and while a Countess isn't Royalty it is in the nobles heirarchy), 4) control (notice I said control not own) highly productive and profitable land and/or 5) any combination of the above.
As for not being able to own property you COULD manage property for an underage heir.

Bess was married four times, inherited a great deal of money, and made the rest of her wealth through her ownership of mines and glassmaking workshops. The use of glass in this house was like an advertisement for her business. While she was a "friend of the Queen", she was also a thorn in her side, as well as in the side of her half-sister Mary Queen of Scots, because she presumed to compete with them with this ostentatious display of wealth. Personally, I can't grin about these gross displays of money and power, when you consider the vast suffering that underlay all of it.

@@adam_p99 She got her wealth from her husbands. She didn't actually earn any of it herself. There is a huge sense of grifting and ego in this story. There were also plenty of wealthy women in that time period. She just happened to weasel her way into the most money. By the way I would and do make this same distinction for rich men thinking they are better than others due to accumulated wealth.
