The jailing of Just Stop oil protesters should put us on 'high alert' says lawyer |.LBC

  • Five Just Stop Oil members - including one of its co-founders - were jailed for between four and five years for conspiring to organise protests that blocked the M25 on Thursday.
They made plans for protestors to climb onto overhead gantries for four days in November 2022.
Francesca Cociani, who represented one of the defendents during the sentencing of this trial, discusses the sentencing with Henry Riley, warning that it should put us at ''high alert' at the 'state of civic rights and freedoms' in the UK.
Roger Hallam, 58, Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35, and Cressida Gethin, 22, agreed to cause disruption to traffic by having protesters climb onto gantries over the motorway for four successive days in November 2022.
Hallam - who also co-founded Extinction Rebellion - was sentenced to five years' imprisonment while the other four defendants were each handed four years' imprisonment.
The environmental group have described the sentences as a "obscene perversion of justice".

It’s not peaceful when people’s lives were put at risk. Cancer patients unable to attend their operation, ambulances , fire engines, food deliveries to local hospitals, people with special needs unable to access medication whilst stuck in traffic. Read the judgement.

  • @Tr.-nf3kc
    @Tr.-nf3kc 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

It's a clear message to the people what will happen if they start massive and road-blocking protests. These JSO protesters with their cause have not gained large public support and sympathy. As such, perfect for the establishment to test public reaction and opinion on harsh sentences for non-violent protests involved in road- blocking protests. They were sentenced under a new law to punish protesters for causing public nuisance.
However no one should dismiss road-blocking protests. There are many examples of such well-organized protests across the world, like truck convey protests or just people mass gathered on roads protesting against acts and agenda of their government, which were, in some cases, purely authoritarian.
Living in an authoritarian regime, this was an only way for us to regain our freedom. Road- blocking protests were desperate and needed actions for us. The emergency vehicles could go through, protests were timely announced via social media and other available sources, on when and were they would take place, to be useful to non-protesters to plan their activities and to look for alternatives.
However, arguments of some people in the comment section - how people were late, or missed their exams, doctors' appointments, work meeting, can not be taken serious in times when the actions by governments trumples the rights of many. Chosing between freedom and rights for many and inconvenience for some is and should not be a real choice.
Also, every road-blocking protest is costly. Money can not be ranked first, above our rights and freedom.
How many peaceful road-blocking protests have been held by people over Gaza? Should they be imprisoned? They also caused inconvenience such as missed exams, doctor's appointments, being late for work etc. They were costly for some.
Harshly sentencing the protesters from the unpopular movement as JSO is a message for any protest movement. Whatever the cause for protesting - immigration, freedom of speech, inflation, wars, property rights- if you join and participate at non- violent road-blocking protest, you will find yourself at the mercy of the state whether to imprison you for years.
After exhausting other type of protests, blocking key roads is often the next step to get a broader public attention and to boost the cause by attracting more people to join in and to push a critical pressure on government.
Sentencing these non- violent protesters to 4 and 5 years will have psychological effects on people and for how many this will be a main reason to stay at home in fear of being imprisoned for years without commiting a violent act. Exactly what the messenger wanted.

1.) are you pro-equality (do you believe consequences of an action should depend on the political affiliation of a certain person)
2.) your definition of "Peacefulness" (in a personal relationship, a person can be abusive without doing visible physical damage, can we use similar terms when we are dealing with the relationship between two public entities)
depending on what exactly was planned, and the role of the people sentenced as organizers, this act could be one bordering on Terrorism, in which case, the sentences are pretty lenient... for an act of non-violent intimidation - I would say it's on the high side, but not something insane if they are kept in a low-grade or "open" prison...
if the prison they go to is relatively humane... OK, we took 5 years from this persons life, but then, consider the number of people they effected over the 120 hours... OK, each had a few hours of their lives taken away from them, but... there were thousands of them, maybe overall it is way waaay more than the 5 years we are talking about.

100% disagree with JustStopOil but imprisonment is a scary outcome. Huge injustice. We should all be concerned about this.

@@ibexdnb2879 It really isn't when you consider their actions directly put people's lives in danger. What should worry you more are people going to jail for voicing spicy opinions and jokes on social media or stickers on lamp posts that show ONS statistics.

It's just a radical right wing government doing what they do, and a moderate Labour government not wanting to do anything about it. And then it meets a less than clever judge.
