Yes, by capping energy company profits - then there would be no need for a winter fuel allowance.
Im not a banker but how about dumping the french non wanted back into france there is a saving and then stop foreign aid as it doesnt seem to be used the right. Way its paying traffickers it looks like another huge saving before attacking the. Old,sick citzens .Plus no pay rises for mps until there isnt a blackhole .Plus make it clear to councils budgets are there for a reason its not an idea they are a must .
It was well reported neither party were mentioning this funding shortfall before the election. It has been known about for a long time.
Labour might have inherited a financial black hole, but Labour has a choice about how it deals with the shortfall. So far the choices have been wrong.
Pensioners have paid their way. Get the professional unemployed back to work or stop their benefits
Why does everybody think pensioners have paid their way? This generation of pensioners, most women didn't work years ago and stayed at home whilst their husbands worked. So do they really deserve winter fuel allowance as they never paid into the system?
@@KeepingTheFaith123 how do you work this one out. Remember some of these pensioners including women fought for this country so the “ entitled” generation we have now have got the freedoms they have. I left school in 1980 and was told i could retire and receive a state pension at 65 I now have to work until I’m 67. I have never been out of work for not even one day like millions of other people my age. And let’s face it they are using the money that should be going to pensioner,on housing, feeding and financially supporting “illegal migration “ to people who are nothing more than economic migrants
Pensioners didn't pay their way. the 1950's housewife with single earner was a reality for much of the nation. one man's tax for 50 years does not cover 2 retirees for 25 years each. this is common sense. he paid tax that contributed to the schools, army, police, government and retirement, it certainly does not cover the costs of retirement for 2 for 10 years let alone any longer.
Get everyone to work, cut the immigrant benefits. cut the social benefits. Gut the NHS. Britain has got the taste of the upper crust and the pockets of a pauper.
@@anthonylulham3473 this is how the system was planned. We didn’t get a welfare state until 1949, so people who worked in the 1950’s could never have paid enough in. The generation who are working now pay the people who retired before them. I really can’t see why the younger generation think that pensioners have had such any easy time? When I bought my first house in the late eighties mortgage rates were at 16% not 4% like today and before you say mortgages weren’t as much then they were in relative terms. I was earning £250 a week for 70 hours just to keep up with my mortgage payment. Then the government let all the insurance companies off with not paying out what they said we would get on our endowment policies which were supposed to of paid our capital off at the end of 25 years so some people had to carry on working past retirement age to pay their mortgages off. If you want to blame anyone blame doctors for keeping people alive so long. That’s the real problem people living too long, sat in nursing homes with no dignity. But Britain isn’t grown up enough to talk about euthanasia. I,d make a life will tomorrow. You talk about pensioners not paying into the system what about the 10’s of thousands of illegal migrants who haven’t paid into the system? But they’ll be nice and cosy in their four star hotels this winter. Because Starmer as no plans to return any of them too France
I’m already working on getting my mother in law to take a great holiday, that will bring her savings below the limit. She can then get the care that she currently pays for and the Winter Fuel Allowance paid as she would be able to claim pension credits. No point in having savings in your old age…
Why would there be a point to ever having savings in old age?
@@BenRobinson1974 none now, you might as well blow it all and let the state pay for everything. There is no reward for hard work and financial propriety.

Thanks to all that voted Labour!
The ‘blame the previous government’ line is already sounding like an excuse.
I don’t think the citizens have a clue how poor the UK has become. Especially the folks living in London.
Well, apart from the fact that we can legitimately blame the last government for an extraordinary inability to govern. They never had a problem that they didn't make worse.
What about all the billions sent to Ukraine? Always help others before UK citizens.
Shaking with anger my foot. She is sitting pretty on over £1.5k a year whilst taking the fuel allowance off pensioners, alot of whom will be just above the limit to claim benefits and now will be £300 per year worse off plus whatever the heating bills are going to rise this winter - and rise they will no doubt.
Why does it have to be cut completely for those not on pension credit? Couldn't it just be lowered to £100 or £150, an allowance per household rather than for a couple. It was the same with the TV licence fee for the over 75s, instead of just keeping a modest charge, it was taken away altogether. Obviously the TV licence isn't as serious as the fuel allowance but for some of us pensioners the TV is the only enjoyment we get. What about cutting the MPs perks,
How much to feed and house the illegals ?
£0 because we don't feed and house illegal immigrants in the UK. But the tories did waste £7 billion on gimmicks that did nothing to help with the problem of actual illegal immigration.
£100 a day per person at least when you factor in all costs, £700 per week, £2800+ per month...... winter fuel payment peanuts compared to cost of one boat person, but hey you still voted tory and Labour into first a second place, your fault!!!
Circa £14M + per DAY!
Too much
@alanmichael5619 the boaties are illegal migrants so your figures are wrong.
Just remember that the energy companies, during this living crisis, have made £420 billion in profits. American companies continue to pay reduced tax. So let's let the pensioners and people of Britain pay. And that's the important thing to remember. Labour. Putting the UK's GDP before per capita GDP. Take from the poor, give to the rich. Globalism baby, still going strong.
Remember the winter fuel payment's go to the energy companies

Unfortunately the banks did need to bailed out else the entire economy would have been collapsed (there should have been more prosecutions though!).

It was suggested years ago that the fuel allowance should be means tested and the reason it wasn't was that it would cost more to oversee the means test then to give it universally.

All my working life the state pension was a right for all. We paid into a system that was supposed to look after us. Now we pensioners are being blamed for all the financial ills created by various governments over the decades. Its not the working peoples fault. It is entirely the fault of successive governments of all colours, but as usual the working people pay the price.
I am only in a reasonable financial position because I have worked hard, saved and lived a frugal life. Now in my old age I find that it will become rapidly more frugal and frankly miserable.
I have watched folk on benefits living in council houses live better lives than me, as I have paid for what I need. While they went on foreign holidays, I stayed at home and paid my mortgage. Now that is being held against me. If the state pension is means tested I will lose it, until I have spent all my savings and sold my house - then what?? there are no social housing projects so I could end up homeless after a fully responsible self sufficient life. Until now I have cost the state nothing, and paid continuously into NI and Taxes.
Pensioners have become easy targets.
Is that based on the last 14 years or 14 days?
Some of these responses on the winter fuel allowance show the high level of animosity aimed at pensioners from those of a younger age. When a government’s action pits one generation against another that’s a really big mistake.
Well, all those of a younger age will be a pensioner one day, they will realise they should have stuck up for 2days pensioners,.to keep their future pension safe.
When you see what those who are now pensioners have done for the younger generations you'll understand the animosity towards them. A generation that got given everything then pulled the ladder up behind them. The most entitled and pandered to generation in history. I know not all pensioners are like this, but enough of them are that we're in the place we're in.
