  • Wayne Gretzky is one of the most legendary athletes in sporting history. You'd think someone so great would receive nothing but praise, but as it turns out, some people really didn't like him.

    Quick note about Walter Gretzky: he didn't put his kid through endless drills because he wanted an NHL player. He did it because Wayne wouldn't leave the ice. Walter built a rink in his back yard so he could stay warm as Wayne spent hours skating around for fun.
    They always make a point of telling people that it was always Wayne who insisted on skating when he was small so parents don't force their kids, thinking they'll somehow make their sprog the next Great One.

    I once got punched by the father of a kid I beat at a Judo tournament for the 5th time that year. The dad saw me going to the bathroom, came after me and punched me in the face, I was 10 years old... He was sentenced for assault and banned from coming to Judo tournaments. Worst thing was that his son was really nice and a guy I liked to chat with between matches but he was so ashamed of what his father had done that he quit Judo completely... Seriously, some parents...

    One time when I was little playing in a football match for kids I score a goal and a boy just came and kick me, understandably this got him kick out of the game. However the mom was not happy about this, calling me a liar and a “sensible baby”(she said to the 8 year old girl crying with a bruise on her leg).
    There were many witnesses so the mom ended up claiming it was a sincere accident and that I should have been the one kicked out for not being able to handle “rough play”.
    How do I know it wasn’t an accident? Simple... the kid was the goalie.

      I once got told off by a teammate's dad for "stealing" a goal from his son (it was basically a tap-in). But thing is his son took a throw-in and it was going straight in (if the ball goes straight in without any contact from an outfield player, it doesn't count) so I actually did the right thing and next week after he looked the rule up, he apologised.
      Was my second (and last) career goal.

    As a referee for Hockey Canada, and as a Canadian, I can 100% confirm that parents of kids in all levels of Hockey go to a whole new level of insane about all the details of what their "angel", as Karl said, is doing. This was a special case for Wayne, but it is not unusual for parents to yell at the coaches of both teams, at referees, or at other parents. One story I heard was that after a referee lost control of a game, as in play had halted and everyone was yelling at everyone else, that there were fights in the stands and people were arrested.
    Hockey is something special in Canada, that's for sure

    I remember being a tutor for twin siblings (brother and sister; maybe 8 years old) in the neighborhood. They are good basketball players and played together in the boys' team. They were above their age in skill; just through playing against each other and watching TH-cam. But they played in their age group in a school team since money was an issue. Boos from opposing players' parents/crowds were one thing and it fueled them to play better; so that wasn't a big concern. But they, and the siblings' parents, couldn't deal with "stage parents" within their team. It wasn't every parent but it's enough to be concerning. They would accost the siblings of their kids' mistakes. Some of their teammates didn't want their parents doing what they did; as they are friends. But others were complicit. You don't have to be dominant like Gretzky, even a modicum of talent is enough fuel for these crazy people. The parents, and the complicit kids, were so narrow minded that they were willing to play for their position on the team (if they win the siblings go and if they lose they go). Needless to say, they lost. But the stage parents leveraged their PA position to create a 2nd team in the school that dissolved because of infighting. I wonder why 🤷

    We had a problem with terrible sports parents for a long time in my town. It eventually got to the point where the sports center hired secure guards who's sole purpose was to keep out banned parents out during games and even practice. I still remember the day when a pair of parents where actually arrested for their HORRIBLE behavior. They would bring MEGAPHONES to the f'ing games and call out specific kids who they particularly did not like and when they eventually got banned, snuck into games to harras the kids before and after games/practices. It all came to a head when the mother brought fucking ROCKS to a game and they both started throwing them at the other team, on live television no less (this was basically the championship game for the season in my town). Needless to say, they both got arrested and their son and daughter were adopted by another family.

    My cousin played hockey against him as a kid, he says that Gretzky walked into the arena wearing a yellow rain coat and they teased him. My cousins coach told everyone to stay on him, but even with 5 guys on him, he still scored 5 goals that game. I’ve also met Walter, Wayne’s dad, twice at the Walter Gretzky tournament in Brantford(close to Toronto). Super nice guy but I don’t think he has much time left

    • @luketfer
      @luketfer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Its a tough choice between the two to be honest, one is constantly on the kids back, never lets up the pressure and no matter what they do, it isn't good enough leading to complexes later in life or growing up to resent their parents. The other is straight up neglectful and makes you wonder why they even had kids in the first place.

    I went to school with a kid who was kind of like the anti-Gretzky. He was an all-right player, but thought he was king shit on skates. Just an obnoxious little shit heel on and off the ice, and the parents hated him because he used to cheap shot kids all the time. A friend of mine who played on the same team as him (and hated him with a passion) just goes out and just destroys him with a body check during the middle of a game, and everyone in the friggin building started to cheer. It was freakin hilarious!

He is truly the result of natural talent and dedication to hard work. It'd be interested to know how good he'd have been with just the work ethic and not the natural talent.

    To be fair, by the time he was playing in the NHL, he was 6 feet tall, 185 lbs. (perhaps a fair bit lighter at the start, bulked up more later) , and while that isn't gigantic, he was at least close to average for a player of that era. True, today that would be considered on the smaller side, but 30 years ago, not necessarily.
    But yeah, as a ten-year old, in one single season, he scored 378 goals and 139 assists for a total of 517 points. *IN ONE SEASON* .

    @coast2coast00 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also should be noted that he got the nickname "The great one" at 10 years old. Imagine people saying you were better than your hero who was the best player in the NHL for 35 years at that point, before you were even a teenager.

    fun fact. the jersey makers in the NHL had 2 logos on the jersey tail of Gretzky's (one on each side) because of how he tucked his jersey in you usually wouldn't see it.

    I can totally believe this. I remember when I was playing pee-wee hockey, I dropped from tier 1 to go on my dad's tier 3 hockey team. Didn't bother me much since we had a bunch of tier 1 players that my dad scrounged up so we had a pretty good team. Anyways, the Tier 1 skills competition and tournament came up and our team got in since one of the teams from the US couldn't make it. Myself and some of the other top players were selected for the skills tournament. We went against the top tier 1 team in the city and knocked them out of the first round and I still remember the father of one of the kids on the tier 1 team saying to his son how embarrassing it was to watch him lose to a tier 3 team in front of the scouts. I heard that walking off the ice so for sure people in stands heard that too. I'm glad I never had that kind of pressure growing up in hockey. That came later on in the season when some scouts called my name up because they heard of that tournament in the local paper and my name was in there. Then my parents told me the back story of my dad's cousins playing in the NHL. One of them even played with Gretzky on the WHA Oilers.

    My parents just regularly Offered different sports to try out in hopes of me being less bad at it, I eventually picked up horseback riding but still am no sporty person (while my sister (bored at our brothers Socker practice) joined the boys team 2 years older and when league regulations didn't allow her to play in the boys team at 15 she joined the women's having to travel quite a bit future as female leagues are less dense) .

    I can believe all of this...I can remember watching people I knew who were hockey fans while watching a game and, say, their team was playing one Gretzky was on and anytime Gretzky got checked against the boards and there was, say, a penalty they would say something about him being a crybaby lol It was ridiculous, didn't matter the context or anything, he was simply the crybaby unless he was on your team and then he was the Great One.

    You know in a weird way this is very inspiring, he is objectively the best player and he went through this. I don't know if he knew he was the best but he liked it enough to keep doing what he loved even if everyone hated him for it. And he loved it enough to genuinely help his teammates be the best too. Mr. Rogers gives him a gold star, like he would to every human but Gretzky really earned his. 🤓

    Idea for future content, because I can't find them anymore:
    There were a series of videos that got a massive rise out of some people because it was promoting the "Ten-Ten" initiative or something along those lines. This boiled down to "You should do these things to live a greener life, and if you are the one or two people out of a group of ten that isn't enthused to do it, YOU GET BLOWN THE FUCK UP!"
    ...Apparently, people got somewhat up in arms about a school teacher blowing up children in her classroom who were lukewarm on going home and doing a recycling project.
