    After watching you for a while, I’m a bit of an expert on cows feet now.
    Me: ouch, that looks terrible
    GP: here you see a healthy foot
    Me: looks fine to me, nothing to see here.
    GP: you’re in for a treat. This is a huge problem.

    Something I have noticed and really appreciate, is how at first when you start trimming with the knife, your strokes are fast and sure, but if you start to detect a problem, they become slower, more careful, more considering. You are always so cautious and caring. You take the time to ensure that everything that needs to be done is done, but you are never rushed or careless, even with the knife.

They shrug off issues that would have a person screaming in agony, and limp when it's something a human would be ready to amputate their own foot for. Then they get one proper trim, a block, and a few weeks later have healed most of it. Cows rock!

    I've worked on one of no more than two dozen mobile beef slaughter units in all of the U.S. great plains (rocky mountains to Mississippi river, ish) and you've totally changed how I look at hooves while I'm breaking off shanks during slaughter. I think someday I'd like to put blade to horn rather than skin. Cheers, thanks for the inspiration! I must say, the small-scale family ranchers of Colorado have cows with excellent looking feet.

    • @inflatablewolfie
      @inflatablewolfie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Cows reared for beef will usually have better feet than those reared for milk as they will put up more fat, which gives them a bigger cushion in that hoof, reducing the shock. They also don't live as long so they don't have as much time to develop problems.

    I have watched you for a long time and love your recordings! Just so you know I am 72 years young. I just saw a few other hoof trimmers on F.B. And they are terrible! They either don’t know how to make their viewers understand what they are doing or they don’t care. You are very informative and careful with the cows hooves, where they fast and don’t care about the well being of the cows. It appears that they do not want to help the cows they just want to trim as many as they can without documentation. It is my opinion that you are the best of the best in hoof trimming. You truly care about the farmers and the cows. THANK YOU FOR THE MOST INFORMATIVE, CARING YOU TUBES ! I can only hope you continue with this!
    Thank you
    Jim

    So first things first love the channel!! It's so wholesome and every video brightens my day exponentially. I have two questions. First, what's the history of hoof trimming? This seems like a critical piece to livestock care, so how far back does the practice go? And my second question, I saw another hoof trimmer channel that did not clot a bleeding hoof. The trimmer just bandaged it after the trim but it was bleeding through the bandage. Is that okay to do for the cow? Or would it create chances for infection?
