    My first car was a grandma car from my grandmother I made payments of $200 a month for a year till paid off to $2400. It was a 1990 Chevy Corsica. It showed me the value of money and created a sense of responsibility as a 17 year old while washing dishes at a rehab hospital making $6.10 an hour in 1999 right after high school.

    • @---cr8nw
      @---cr8nw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Charles, it doesn't really give him as much of a break as it seems. When they repossess a car, they sell it and apply the proceeds to the balance owed. So, the older the car is and the higher the mileage that's on it, the less it'll sell for. He'll have to pay the difference. Granted, that's probably less than his car payment would've been for all of those months.

    Sounds like he just didn't want to drive a "grandma car". Let me tell you, grandma cars are great, especially when you don't have money! My first car was a grandma car that we bought from a little old lady that literally only drove it to church. It had 30K miles and was in excellent condition. It was 17 years old (older than me at the time) and we got it for $1200! I was so proud of that little car, that I worked on it and made it better. Turned it into a lowrider. Took it to shows. Guy was like "I didn't know these cars could look this good. I have one." Me, "yeah, a lot of people say they're grandma cars." Him, "I got mine from my grandma!"
    I still have it by the way, since I loved it so much. It's on my page. 1985 Chevy Celebrity.

      @arnold17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think so. I think he just lacks confidence and tries to fit in or impress people. It makes sense, his discharge from being around the wrong people, getting a car he can’t afford and spending 1200 on tires he can’t afford. Him not wanting to drive his grandma’s car when she barely drives... her car probably isn’t cool enough for him. He has 3k and wants to get another loan to get another car... if he really just needed a car he could buy one for 3k or less, but the car would be older with a lot of miles. He can’t be seen driving that can he?

    No Dave you haven't been in the same situation as this guy. It's not his debt that is keeping him up at night. It's the fact that he knows he can't afford to pay for that car he wants. And no he is not going to follow Dave's advice. Give him another couple of years and then he will be calling about the $25,000 in debt that he owes and he will be living in his grandmother's basement.

    Before I started listening to Dave Ramsey... when I got my first job, I went out and bought a brand new car. I thought I was being smart because I “stayed within my means” by buying a Toyota Corolla on 0% financing.
    Then I found Dave, and focused on paying that car down. Paid off in 36 months when i financed it for 60 months.
    That was 8 years ago. I’m still driving a reliable solid little car and haven’t thought of a car payment in 8 glorious years. Not having payments is so liberating. Once you go debt free, it’s hard to take debt on again

    The military really needs to implement a financial responsibility class in boot camp. Right after boot camp I went into the same thing and bought a car at a ridiculous interest rate and my insurance was insanely expensive. A lot of military members do this and considering that a lot of us in at an early age we fall into this trap.
