SEGA was amazing EVERYWHERE after they become a Third Party Developer. I still know how amazed I was seeing Sonic (!!!) in Smash Bros. Brawl. They just shine ever since.
As someone who started gaming in the late 80s, the idea that Sega would develop games for a Nintendo console was mind-blowing. Fzero gx was the absolute pinnacle of their efforts. As someone who grew up loving Nintendo. I now realise how important Sega is to gaming. We desperately need them back developing consoles. They brought such a unique flavour to gaming that's sadly missing.
I agree Sega vs Nintendo back in the day was the best time in gaming for me no disrespect to Sony vs Microsoft I just think it was better back then with Sega and Nintendo
The idea of Sega making games for Nintendo consoles was nothing new though. Sega was making games for Nintendo consoles back then too as both Shinobi and Space Harrier were released for NES in 1989. Sega was as good a third party dev back then even releasing Golden Axe and Altered Beast for the PC Engine as well as Lady Stalker, Thunder Force 3, and Columns for Super NES with Lady Stalker still a Sega Super NES exclusive to this very day. Also Sega mentions time and time again that they don't want to make consoles anymore as there is no point in making one and they aren't sure what new things they could bring to the table that the other 5 (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Atari, and EverCade) already did.
Loved the Gamecube. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Phantasy Star Online were probably my two most played games on the system (thousands of hours between the two of them). My wife and I played them both together quite a bit, especially PSO and the Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It's worth mentioning that not only did both those games have the GBA connectivity feature, but you could actually unlock stuff in PSO with the GBA content from Sonic. F-Zero GX was actually the result of a threesome with Nintendo, Sega, and Namco (the same partnership that built the Mario Kart Gran Prix multi-cabinet arcade racer), and you could bring your Gamecube memory card to the arcade and use your data on the cabinet and vice versa. NCAA Basketball 2K3 is actually one of the priciest games in the North American Gamecube library nowadays...
ive watched so many of your videos that your intro video gives me a warm fuzzy feeling everytime i hear it. i know a great video is about to follow. thank you!
Great vid SLX! I never got my cancelled port of Skies of Arcadia for the PS2. At least I obtained the soundtrack and it was one of THE best soundtracks around!
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is my absolute favorite of these, i never did get to try Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1&2 though, but I AM a fan of the Online Multiplayer Phantasy Star titles.
great video. i remember this twilight period of classic Sega well. I grew up with the Genesis but never had a Saturn and the DC just didn't jive with me. I had the PSX and later the Gamecube and Xbox. So i played a lot of these games between the Xbox and GC and had a blast. Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler, Sonic Adventure1/2/gems, F-Zero, Home Run King, Arcadia... and on Xbox it was Panzer Dragoon and Outrun 2 all the way. It was the last time Sega felt like Sega to me. I recently picked up a Japanese Saturn with flash cart so i'm looking forward to exploring Sega's 32bit library - i heard it was awesome.
Skies of arcadia. What a gem of a game. I played through that 3 times on my Sega Dreamcast. I wish they would come out with a remaster or anything on it at this point
The only thing keeping me from playing Legends instead of the DC original is the soundtrack. They butchered it in the port, probably due to the lack of disk space. It sounds muffled and like half of the instruments are gone.
I actually just bought a GameCube recently since Sonic Heroes is turning 19 years old this year and it was one of my first and favorite games as a kid. This video reminds me of how much Sega content I need to aquire for it. Great video as always Sega Lord X
The F-Zero GX part of this video reminds me that Sega made the best game in that series, and it was so good Nintendo apparently hasn't even tried to make a new one since. Maybe because they know that Sega does with F-Zero what Nintendon't.
@MichaelUU Believe it or not, the only Nintendo home console that Sega never made games for was the N64, every other Nintendo console has had at least 3 to 6 Sega games on there. NES had games like Shinobi, Fantasy Zone 1 & 2, Altered Beast, and Space Harrier while Super NES had games like Column, Lady Stalker, Thunder Force 3 (known as Thunder Spirits), and Puyo Puyo. It wasn't until the GameCube that Sonic finally made it to a Nintendo home console.
I am so glad I got most of these over a decade ago before GameCube prices shot up. I payed $20 for Skies of Arcadia Legends and now it's over ten-times that. Out of curiosity, do you think Sega could have turned things around for the company if they did everything right with the Dreamcast (DVD player included, not lose EA support, and prevent the massive privacy)? The company was in really bad straights by then and I don't know.
it definitely deserves that price gouge, it's a one of a kind RPG that all these years later has never been copied. i enjoyed that game so damn much, i completed it with max level characters and full elements.
Seeing Sonic on a Nintendo console was one of the most bizarre things ever back in the day, comparable to the WWF buying WCW. Now you can just buy nearly the entire Sega catalog on the Switch, along with the TurboGrafx-16 (and Night Trap!).
@@maroon9273 That is if they still had license for them. Even if they do transfer them to a new platform like the next Nintendo Switch successor they will still charge you for it. You're not getting those for free even if you purchased them before.
•NCAA Basketball 2k3 is actually one of the rarer games on the console due to production being cut midway through its first production cycle. •Sonic CD and Sonic R's ports on the Gems Collection (I think) are based on the PC version's not the Sega CD and Saturn versions.
I wondered why Super Monkey Ball never made it to the Dreamcast during 2001? I mean yeah the Dreamcast was dead, but games were still appearing on that console. I find it strange that the Dreamcast was still going until 2002, maybe it should’ve kept on going until 2006 or 2007. But I digressed, it was probably best to be discontinued, but at the same time, it made wish it would keep on continuing producing games till the seventh generation.
Spartan Total Warrior is a must play. It's proper difficult and kind of has a bootleg Shadow of the Colossus-hack and slash feel. The AI in the game isn't bad either. It would be cool to see a video on its development.
I would also like to hear more about what you think happened to Sega after the Sammie merger! I really didn't know about this, and I don't know how it affected Sega's output (I stopped playing on consoles quite awhile ago.) Thanks Lordy!
Gamecube was a really cool console back in the day, sadly it was underrated compared to the PS2 that was dominating and the new kid on the block; the OG XBOX. personally i had the Gamecube and a total of 50 games, bought with a $1000 shopping spree gift. i bought about $900 worth of hardware and games and spent the last $100 on pizza, which was scarfed while enjoying the console and the 50 games i got.
Brilliant content as always, been watching your videos now for ages and they just get better.Love the Game Cube especially with Sega putting there games on there.
Skies of Arcadia legends has got to be my favourite Sega JRPG. I hope it gets a port to modern consoles Retro games are getting way too expensive these days. Great video.🤔🙂🎮☠️
Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 were my first ever SEGA games (since I was born in the early 2000s). They were very difficult, but me and my family still had a blast playing them, especially the Party games.
FZero GX is probably the best thing they did as a third part dev. They got the chance to work on a classic IP that wasn’t one of their own, but in a genre that they have a very rich history. Everything about it is great and that is probably one of the factors behind them not continuing the series after it. Which is a huge shame for the series, but Nintendo desperately needs to remaster GX and put it on the switch.
As someone who didn't have a Dreamcast or Saturn while they were on the market I especially loved finally getting so much Sega content on all three platforms that generation. For GC Super Monkey Ball was a hit I didn't expect to love so much and getting the Sonic games and Skies of Arcadia that I missed out on were the highlights in the 00s.
Weirdly after the dreamcast I don't think I bought a console ever again. My gaming days died out. Now after losing the collection in 2013 I returned to it via emulation and think that's where I sit forever till the end now. But I do like learning where sega went after the dreamcast.
Loved the GameCube, there were a lot of great games on the system by Sega, Sonic Adventure DX & 2 Battle, Sonic Mega Collection, and Skies of Arcadia Legends was a flawed port of a wonderful game. The music was compressed really bad, with notes cutting off a half second or full second too early, and inferior sounding instruments. Still a wonderful game though. Had that game released on PS2 and Xbox? I am willing to bet compression would've been a non-issue. I'm shocked they didn't port it over to both platforms. It should've been a multi-platform title. F-Zero GX though? Damn did that game fire on all cylinders. Such an incredible game with an amazing soundtrack and a total challenge gameplay wise.
Yeah, this was the console to make me a Sonic Fan! I got to experience the awesome Sonic Mega Collection via my cousin renting it, the demo of Sonic Adventure DX, before owing it, and got to experience a bit of Sonic Heroes as well! I unfortunately missed out on F-Zero GX, but I don't seem to lose sleep over that. Pretty wild that an F-Zero game was the first official collab between Sega and Nintendo!
I'm old enough to still think it sounds insane to see Sega games on a Nintendo console. I know you know what I mean, like "WTF? A SONIC GAME ON A NINTENDO CONSOLE????????!!!!" hahahaha. it's ten times more shocking than if Halo came out on Playstation. it was an obvious thing and we knew we would never see Mario on a Sega system and Sonic on a Nintendo system... but hell froze over I guess. it's hard to describe how intense the "Nintendo vs Sega" war was. those were the good old days hahaha.
I missed out on the Dreamcast and wanted to play Skies of Arcadia, so I bought a Gamecube because of that game. It’s a great time and deserves a port to modern consoles.
Unlike you I unfortunately had to miss out on owning Sega during their days in the console market (and I'm sure the expense of their hardware at the time didn't help), but because of their move to 3rd party the first Sonic games I got to own and play were the GameCube port of SA2 and Sonic Advance for the GBA, followed by owning Sonic Mega Collection as my introduction to playing the classic Genesis titles. While I wish I could have gotten to experience the console era of Sega during the 90s like you did, I've still enjoyed going back to it in retrospect. Sega may not have always been perfect as a company but there's a lot to appreciate out of their past hardware and game library.
Yeah Rogue Squadron 2 was fantastic. The Battle of Endor, the space part at least, was always my favorite part of the franchise and they did a great job in the game of recreating it. Hatd ass mission though. Never could get a good medal.

Also Sega mentions time and time again that they don't want to make consoles anymore as there is no point in making one and they aren't sure what new things they could bring to the table that the other 5 (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Atari, and EverCade) already did.
Sonic Adventure 2, F-Zero GX, Super Monkey Ball... Gamecube was truly a great console for Sega!
And xbox
NCAA Basketball 2K3 is actually one of the priciest games in the North American Gamecube library nowadays...
ive watched so many of your videos that your intro video gives me a warm fuzzy feeling everytime i hear it. i know a great video is about to follow. thank you!
Great episode SEGA Lord X.
GameCube and Dreamcast were my favorite systems that generation.
I think I know where this series is going next and I'm ecstatic. Sega had a HUGE presence on the PS2, and I'm ready to see your take on it.
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Sounds silly at first, but trust me it is a fun game.
great video. i remember this twilight period of classic Sega well.
I play and complete Skies at least once a year for god knows how long lol. Its my number one favourite of all time.
It’s 19?!
@@gracekim1998 Yeah, it's 19. Its *20th anniversary* is actually this December in Japan, or early next year for other regions.
How did that happen???
The F-Zero GX part of this video reminds me that Sega made the best game in that series, and it was so good Nintendo apparently hasn't even tried to make a new one since. Maybe because they know that Sega does with F-Zero what Nintendon't.
F-Zero GP Legends and F-Zero Climax were made after that one just that both were made for GBA. Technically Nintendo ran out of idea for that series.
It had to feel a bit rough for Sega to have to make games for the company the rivaled with for years.
@@VOAN I wasn't aware of that.
A few weren't released in the US I see.
Great idea for SEGA beyond the standard first party stuff, love this direction
F-Zero GX is my favorite GameCube game next to Pikmin, way too much fun.
See the thing is the dreamcast sold pretty well. It just got murdered by the ps2 and the game piracy didnt help.
it definitely deserves that price gouge, it's a one of a kind RPG that all these years later has never been copied. i enjoyed that game so damn much, i completed it with max level characters and full elements.
Seeing Sonic on a Nintendo console was one of the most bizarre things ever back in the day, comparable to the WWF buying WCW. Now you can just buy nearly the entire Sega catalog on the Switch, along with the TurboGrafx-16 (and Night Trap!).
Nintendo need to transfer remaining nec and Sega games from wii store.
Personally pc ports were much better than saturn and CD ports.
@@maroon9273 Especially for Sonic R.
Looks like an early God of War game. Must give it a try!
@@PhilipMarcYT yeah, God of War owes a lot to STW.
I would also like to hear more about what you think happened to Sega after the Sammie merger! I really didn't know about this, and I don't know how it affected Sega's output (I stopped playing on consoles quite awhile ago.) Thanks Lordy!
Spartan Total Warrior is a game I've come back to time and time again. Good times
Sega on the gamecube is a brilliant idea 💡. 😀👍🎮
Brilliant content as always, been watching your videos now for ages and they just get better.Love the Game Cube especially with Sega putting there games on there.
Skies of Arcadia legends has got to be my favourite Sega JRPG.
I hope it gets a port to modern consoles
Retro games are getting way too expensive these days.
Its crazy that TH-cam recommended me this 11 hours after being uploaded yet i never seen this TH-cam channel.
You made my heart flow. thank you so much for covering my childhood console.
Another great video. I look forward to seeing where else you take with this "Sega on other platforms" series.
More Fzero GX and AX content!! Would be great to see a whole video on that
As someone who didn't have a Dreamcast or Saturn while they were on the market I especially loved finally getting so much Sega content on all three platforms that generation. For GC Super Monkey Ball was a hit I didn't expect to love so much and getting the Sonic games and Skies of Arcadia that I missed out on were the highlights in the 00s.
I can’t wait to see your coverage of the PS2 SEGA releases. Feels like a lot of folks forget just how bizarre their output was on that system
I love how you had the Eagels play the 49er. That game was great on Sunday.
I had no idea the Streets of Rage trilogy were only in the JP release of Sonic Gems Collection, that's insane!
I bought Beach Spikers because of this video. Thanks for bringing this gem to my attention.
Cool concept of Sega third party games! Awesome episode! Great job here!
This episode remind me that I did a partial run of Virtua striker v3 with a coach named "$3x at all" and had a blast with the dialogue
Monkey Ball has an absolutely amazing physics engine.
What about Evolution Worlds? It was a redo of the Evolution games on Dreamcast and had involvement from Sega on the GameCube version.
Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite of the Main series in this video my problem with Sonic Heroes, is the story kind of dual
It is long overdue
Seeing that swarm of TIEs was pretty epic, I think there were even more in the co-op version on RS3.
the amount of japan only sega games increased heavily going into the later ps2 years and beginning with DS and PSP
Sega of America being Sega of America. They did not know how to market games like Sakura Wars and Yakuza, thinking they were too-japanese
thanks for the info as always I enjoy your takes on sega software on other consoles, I hope you continue this series
Awesome review! I enjoyed my Nintendo gamecube and sega showed it love!
2 things in my life that I love. Sega and GameCube. What a combo!!!!
