Can we all take a moment to give SLX some credit for the fact that in the last month he has released three entire episodes of a single, new series? The amount of work that goes into videos like this are the reason that so many content creators don't even do 30 minute videos. But SLX is here showing them all up with three 15+ minute videos in a single week.
@@SegaLordX You might want to take a break. "Final Fight did so much better than this, on the same hardware"? The CD's 68000 runs faster and has an entire CD's worth of data to store graphics. Huge nostalgia for Pit Fighter: when I was a child, I used to make championships with my cousins back in 1993, they were staying at my home while my aunt was very sick at the hospital. It really took our minds out of the ordeal, and everything ended up fine.
Yeah I always liked Pit Fighter, and I think the Mega Drive port is actually pretty decent in terms of gameplay. If Sega Lord X didn't like Pit Fighter on the Mega Drive then God knows what he thinks of the SNES port, because that was truly atrocious.
Man, I loved the Genesis port. It's not everything the arcade game was, but it had a lot of great things in the port. My best friend and I would often throw the objects into the crowd and watch to see if the crowd would throw something back. Loved it.
Fun fact about the genesis port of Ghost'N Goblins, Yuji Naka, main father of the Sonic series, said in an interview that not only had he worked on this port as a programmer, it was there that he learned how to make curvy ground on many layers work, something that would come to be essential in making Sonic work.
The Genesis port of Pit Fighter is actually the best home conversion. I'd argue it's more fun than the arcade to play too since you can clearly see the play area of the arena especially with two players. The arcade while graphically better is also pretty noisy and makes it harder to judge where everyone/everything is, although that's probably the point with it being a quarter muncher.
Yes, but a good home conversion of a dog turd still smells like shit. Plus, the Genesis lost the only fun part of Pit Fighter: the digitized speech of the fighters yelling "whee" every 3-5 seconds of every match. Yes, they're probably not saying "whee" but that's what it sounds like to me. So comical, the way the game moves and sounds in the arcade, it's hilarious. It's not digitized, but a game from Taito called Violence Fight plays similar to Pit Fighter, but way way better, in that it's much less awkward characters flopping around with no rhyme or reason. Pit Fighter was the "ultimate" quarter muncher because the mechanics were broken or non-existent and the movement was so jerky and such awkward animation, you couldn't really tell why or how you'd lose. The epitome of "button basher" because it was all awkward flailing around. Horrible game. I guess it's "nice" that the Mega Drive has a good conversion, but who cares when the game is total crap? It's only marginally better than Street Smart, which was also terrible.
The Dreamcast had a 32-bit CPU, and only some of the instructions on the GPU were 128-bit, as the GPU was mostly a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit instructions. Word length really lost all meaning after 32-bit hit the scene, and it was mostly a marketing thing anyway even beforehand. Both the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 were marketed at the time of release as "128-bit", but then you read the technical specifications and it states "MIPS III 32-bit RISC processor" or "SH-4 32-bit RISC processor", and you are left wondering were are those 128 bits? It turns out only a small fraction of the graphics pipeline used 128-bit floating-point arithmetic, but then you dig further and discovert that the 128-bit arithmetic was actually 64+64 bit double-precision floating-point calculations executed in quick succession, so there was no actual 128-bit code execution at all in both the Dreamcast and PS2. Nowadays GPUs do have the capability of quadruple-precision 128-bit included for some complex vector calculations, but you'll be hard pressed to find those facts anywhere except for the very technical papers.
I never heard anyone call that console 128 bit. I was 90% sure people had stopped caring about bits after the N64 Bits are stupid, now everyone likes teraflops. Which are also stupid. Do the math, Atari Jaguar has 64 bits of power that no developer bothered to actually code their games for, so let's stop talking about bits please?
4:06 Cartwheel jumping down that hill and seeing the smooth animation of the multi-layered background was the moment on Christmas Day 1990 after I hooked it up I realized I had something far beyond what a Nintendo could do.
Yup, I'm from that era and the Genesis was truly a revolution in the fact that arcade gameplay and graphics was so within reach for the average home consumer.
The arcade ports to the Genesis were generally not exact but we really didn't care one bit back then and were perfectly happy with how close the content was to the arcade versions of modern and current releases. Ghouls and Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Golden Axe, Altered Beast; I was thrilled with how all of those turned out; and then in some cases you got games that were different games entirely and better for it such as ESWAT and Shadow Dancer. Loved the Turbografx also but more for the original releases on that system rather than the arcade games that they had.
This brought back so many fond memories of having a Genesis back in the day. There was so much to look forward to. The Genesis had some eye candy right out of the gate. No, the games weren't as smooth as the arcade scalers but coming from an Atari 7800 that I played to death,Iwas grateful to upgrade to a Genesis. With tons of EA, games and other third party support, the sky was the limit with the Genesis for at least a few years. By 94 it was beginning to get long in the tooth as he arcades sported polygon games and what few polygon games the Genesis had were choppy. Though my Jaguar was my show horse for a year until the Saturn arrived , My Genesis/cd/32X was my work horse from 90 to 95. We were all blessed to be alive during such a golden age of home gaming! The Genesis was a huge part of that age! Thanks for the memories!
Neo Geo: distant dream indeed. I now have my fav fighting game of all time on order: the neo Geo version of samurai showdown 2, just for keeps. A memory to a time when arcades still existed, and the only way to play neo Geo stuff for mortals
My eyes are bawling when watching this. God knows I love the 80's and 90's. My childhood was full of memories. Some bad, some good, but NES and Genesis was part of my experience. I discovered Genesis twice before finally getting Genesis at home. The first time it was Altered Beast it was like "Meh." The second time it was at a kiosk at a rental place. Sonic 2 was demo'ed. I completely understand mate. Over here in England the Sega Mega Drive was a huge part of my childhood too. I still play and collect for it all these years later. 👍
Great series. The genesis was one of the most memorable consoles for me as well. I didnt get the SNES until way later, used at a CD shop but played it alot at a friends house.
Yeah I went from an NES to a Genesis. It wasn't until the end of the PS1 generation I got a PC and learned about emulation. I then started emulating all the Super Nintendo games I missed.
@@Gatorade69 Nice. Same with me. I got the NES in maybe 89. Prior to that, at around 6, I got the Atari 2600 but it was a 8 years old by then. As far as I knew it was current. Blew my mind to see an arcade game like that running on the system, after the NES. I had seen Altered Beast in a bowling alley arcade. That and double dragon blew my mind back then in arcades. Emulation is amazing. It really opened up gaming for me. I use save/load states as a way to practice super efficiently and complete hundreds of games legit. I sold all my old systems when I embraced full emulation set ups maybe back in 99. @@theconsolekiller7113 I was born in 87 and my m9m already owned a NES so I literally grew up playing the NES. Do you regret selling all your systems ? My stepdad sold all of mine when I moved out after high school. I would still love to own those systems. I should have started collecting back in 2006/7 when retro gaming stuff was really cheap.
@@Gatorade69 Nice. I was born in 80. The NES is an awesome way to start gaming. I do remember initially having a sadness since I had such an attachment to all my consoles and games over the years. There was definately some growing pains but it wasnt too bad for me as I really embraced the preservation of the games back then. Seeing how I could consolidate all these games into one machine and how they mostly all ran great was enough to really solidify the decision for me. Luckily my friend knew how to build the PC. I had a construction job at the time and put most of that initial money into building the machine. The interface was just a windows desktop with folders for the emulators, roms, but it was awesome. To be able to access all the old 8 and 16 bit systems alone back then was crazy to me. Right before I got into emulation I had spent maybe 500 dollars on a bunch of used games through Game Dude , a mail order service (internet orders werent really a thing in 96 or 97). I went through the process of selling console collections a few times over the years. As things like PS2 became very well emulated, those collections got sold and money was put back into the gaming set up. Its become pretty normal for me now. I do keep physical games for all the consoles that arent well emulated however. Before selling a collection I do some pretty heavy testing to make sure the machine is emulated to my satisfaction. My current emulation machine is much more advanced with the Hyper Spin interface and runs everything from the Wii ,PSP and down to the oldest consoles and computers. When I get a real good camera I hope to do a detailed room set up tour as well as videos focused purely on emulation set up. My friend will film those since he is the one who built everything.
Captain America was definitely one of my favorite genesis beat-em-ups! nothing more hype in that game than hearing 'OK GO!' and then the tempo kicks up! So many of these I definitely remember playing and hope to pick up for my genesis library someday!!
Seeing the MD version of SF2 back to back with the arcade via TH-cam on a flatscreen 28 years after the fact isn't flattering to the MD version, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the MD version on my 14 inch CRT was like having the arcade at home in 1993 and we loved it to death.
Your channel is primarily the reason that I went out and purchased a Sega Genesis recently as an adult. As a kid, I only owned a SNES and seriously missed out on sooooo much that SEGA had to offer.
Dude, so many memories came flooding back to me while watching this. We weren't a rich family growing up. Hell, we did what we could, but when my folks let me rent a game on a semi weekly basis, it was the world to me and my brother and some of the games mentioned here (SF2 for SNES, Mortal Kombat, FF for the Genny) were ones we rented often. It's true that you can never relive your past, but for an arcade kid like me, the home ports at least gave you a chance to experience those games without popping in a quarter. Thanks for taking me back man. I miss those days.
360?!? Odd choice, what's the reason? Mine is the genesis at #1 then ps1, so many great games on both that I always go back to play. I found that my love for gaming started to fall off in the 360/PS3 gen.
Just wanted to mention that the road blaster on G is a super killer Port. Thanks for being my most watched content creator as of about a month now. Sweet
I'll never forget 'Growl' - when I was a wee lad my mom would only buy me very select games. It basically had to be about animals, if it had any other kind of violence it wasn't gonna happen. Games like Primal Rage were examples of ways I used this loophole to get my gaming fix. It was about animals. Growl was much the same, it's name let me ask for it for a present and get it without questions. Then she walked in on me literally whipping women and I never saw that cartridge again. lol
SLX delivering quality video after quality video. I love this series, and can see all of the love put into it. Also, SLX you are so close to a well deserved 100k subs!
Captain America also has a color hack for it that makes it look much better than the default colors. Interesting thing about Punisher is even though I knew it was on the genesis back then because of the gaming mags at the time I never actually saw it any stores I went to even during that time I went on a trip to Florida. I was left wondering for years if it was even real until genesis emulation came along and I got the rom for it and saw it was real.
Always thought the same thing every time I played... 😂 right up there with the "I AM ERROR" from Zelda II.. Which is ironic because this game always reminded me of a co op arcade equivalent of that title at the same time.. So yeah. Lol! Totally agreed tho.
After all these years the megadrive still remains my favourite console of all time, played mine to death back the late 80s to mid 90s, i like the snes as well but in my day you picked a side and stood by it, defo sega for me and still would be if they were still in the game.
The presentation of arcade games often had attract screens that lured you in. A game like Alien Storm did a great job giving you some of the character the game offered. I loved it when a home port got this inclusion.
Man I am loving this series so much. The fact this is all in a single week is mind boggling. Time and again you keep proving why this is by far one of my favourite channels. Keep up the great work.
I remember saying how much I loved Tetris on the NES back in 1990. He laughed, then took me to his house and showed me Ghouls and Ghosts on Genesis. I never looked back because that game alone was MY system seller!
Thank you SLX, this is fantastic content! It takes me back to a different time of my life too. I remember the late 80s and early 90s very fondly, and these arcade games (SEGA's in particular) have been a good part of my motivation to pursue computer programming, specifically to become a games developer, which I did! Sometimes I would go to arcades just to watch people playing these games, trying to absorb the techniques that were being used to make such fun experiences... oh the good times.
I wish I had gotten into programming, I took Computer Programming in high school (C++) but by the 2nd semester they stuck us with a teacher who had no idea about programming and that's where I stopped. There was even another teacher who taught Java and I feel that would have been the most beneficial. I did teach myself Photoshop to modify texture maps and that led to me getting hired working in Photoshop, so that was worth it I guess.
When you mentioned how amazing sega megadrive was with its games and talked about the anticipation of playstation and Saturn around the corn, I felt that. I lived that life too, love your videos.
Amazing video as always mate, the Pit Fighter situation is funny because the Mega Drive conversion ended up being the best, just imagine the other ports lmao, and about Cadash i personally prefer the Mega Drive music to the arcade.
I've really enjoyed this arcade series sega lord. Growing up we all wanted to bring those giant beautiful cabinets home with us. I remember having very similar experiences with these games on home consoles. Some were fun but just couldn't stack up to thier arcade brothers. Genesis is also one of my favorites and in my opinion was the first system that really came the closest to replicating the arcades. Thanks for these awesome videos and keep up the great work
There were plenty of non arcade games that made the Sega Genesis special and one of the greatest consoles ever. But Sega Genesis was a fantastic arcade system. It had awesome ports. It's what I remember it most for.
the Arcade Exp @ Home has been great... really enjoyed all 3 videos... love how SLX always comes up with some clever stuff to watch and keep us entertained..
We should take a moment to point out that Sega Lord X invite his audience by saying "our mission" in the description on his quest for arcade home port perfection.Hopefully there's a TH-cam silver play button at the end of his journey.
Looking at Home conversion starts catching up with Arcade experience is remarkable, The 16 bit era starts very much a new frontier for arcade experience at home. Cant wait the next series on 32 bit and 128 bit conversion
Just wanted to say I love your channel! Everything you produce takes me back to my younger and formative years and I thank you and will always watch your channel! Also, I loved all the systems. I was fanboy of games. Not of systems. Cheers!
NBA Jam TE was made at the company i worked for back in the day. I was only 16 at the time and these guys gave me a job. I got to work on Shadowman after this.
Any chance someone on TH-cam will do a “Games Nintendo should be ashamed of” video? Sega Lord X did such a good job on his “Games Sega should be ashamed of” video I’d like to see someone do the same for Nintendo!
I'd say but most Nintendo TH-camrs are mostly focused on some series and ignore others, there are few that have played and are into most Nintendo series that could do a video like those. Maybe Scott the Woz?
@@oscarzxn4067 I mean Scott has done videos like "The dark age of Nintendo." For someone who really likes Nintendo he really does acknowledge their failures.
there are many videos like that, just type "worst nintendo games". Anyway, most Nintendo failures have been related to hardware and IPs licensing, their house developed titles have been always pretty consistent in quality until DS/Wii era, and their biggest flops are widely known, like the educational games. The Nintendo prior to 1985 has plenty of garbage and clones, like many other big devs or their time, tho.
I most definitely share that same love for the Genesis, as well as the SMS and Game Gear. The Game Gear was just as beloved by me as the Gameboy was, and I played it just as much.
Sega lord x, this is the xman here and I just want to say your videos are awesome especially this one. We must be from the same Era cus I know exactly what your talking about. Just when I think there's probably no more content left over you come up with this one, nice!
I feel blessed to have grown up in the eras of such starkly different technological capabilities that shaped the games of the 16bit and 32/64bit generations. Having loved 16bit machines, then to get such a huge upgrade to 2D sprites and new 3D games I'd only dreamed of felt like such a significant change. Now the current generation doesn't even seem much different from the previous, as did the previous generation from it's predecessor. The lines grow thinner every generation.
@@maroon9273 I play a ton of retro-style games on Steam, it's certinally cool to see how far modern programmers can take old engines. Anyone can throw a filter on a Unity game, but building on something established decades and still uncover new capabilities is something I really admire.
Nicely made video! It's very cool to see some of the games I missed out on at the arcades in comparison to their home versions. For a long time I never knew the differences in sound on the Street Fighter II games. I hardly got to play at the arcades!
I often wondered myself about how the Genesis' arcade legacy would be viewed today had it implemented sprite scaling in to its hardware. It must have been really tricky technology back then as even the SNES could only pull of background scaling/rotation, but then I remember that the Atari Lynx had it in 1989. My guess is that there weren't any off-the-shelf chips available with this technology that were affordable, and Sega wasn't willing to make a custom chip with it included. Really loving this series, man. The best work you've done this year.
Honestly I don't think that Snes was so bad on arcade ports: I really enjoyed Killer Instinct, Sonic Wings, Puzzle Bobble, Arkanoid Doh It Again, Parodius, UN Squadron, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round. Behind Turtles in Time, also Sunset Riders and FF Special showed off good skills and had improved reinterpretation/sequels as Ninja Warriors Again or Pocky & Rocky 1-2. As you said, when I was a kid the SFII exclusive made me crazy, Nintendo hooked me for that reason. Anyway, what a good time for being a young player. Thanks for your hard work, positive vibes from Italy 👍
16 bit era was the first true great alternative to the arcade. No games we arcade perfect or close to it but they were still really good ports for the most part. 32 and 64 bit era is when things get really great and of course Dreamcast and beyond took it to a new level
When Atari went under it was split into two companies: Atari Games, which was bought by Namco and made Arcade games (and the Tengen Label) and Atari Inc, bought by Commodore founder Jack Tramiel, which made hardware like the Atari ST and Jaguar.
Forgotten Worlds on the PS2/Xbox Capcom Collection is the best just for one thing, using the right thumbstick instead of the 2 button set up to spin left or right. It makes it play so much better.
Strider cost like 90$ back in the day and it takes 20 minutes to beat it. That's the nostalgia my uncle has for Strider. Feeling like he got scammed, lol.
I remember how expensive it was when it released, then it maybe a year and half later $8 in a used bin at a video store and snatching it up as my first Genesis game other than the Sonic 1 pack in. For a two year old game it was still very impressive and for $8 a short arcade game was still awesome. I felt the same way about shooters like Gaires and Thunder Force III...wouldn't pay $50 but if I saw them for $10 in a used bin I jumped on them.
Your work is amazing! I'm not a gamer anymore; but, amazingly, I enjoy every of your old school game video. The SNES was my favorite console 🍻🍻 thank you, maaaaan!

It is tied with the 360 in my heart as favorite all time with PS2 coming in 3rd
360?!? Odd choice, what's the reason? Mine is the genesis at #1 then ps1, so many great games on both that I always go back to play. I found that my love for gaming started to fall off in the 360/PS3 gen.
For me the dream was achieved in the late 90s, through MAME emulation.
Later on legally on Xbox 360
Most anticipated episode from you yet! 1 and 2 were amazing!
4 in the morning, in France, can't sleep, perfect timing! Thanks for giving my night a sense 😅
The black pudding seems like it should be a popular meme or something.
Always thought the same thing every time I played... 😂 right up there with the "I AM ERROR" from Zelda II.. Which is ironic because this game always reminded me of a co op arcade equivalent of that title at the same time.. So yeah. Lol! Totally agreed tho.
Loved Cadash!
I'm loving this series so far. You're giving us some top notch content old friend. Thank you for all you do
After all these years the megadrive still remains my favourite console of all time, played mine to death back the late 80s to mid 90s, i like the snes as well but in my day you picked a side and stood by it, defo sega for me and still would be if they were still in the game.
This is a great series keep it up my dude
I'm loving this series. The 16-bit generation is when home consoles really started giving arcade games a run for their money. 👍
Thank you so much for your videos mate. They are each and every one a joy.
When you mentioned how amazing sega megadrive was with its games and talked about the anticipation of playstation and Saturn around the corn, I felt that. I lived that life too, love your videos.
Great video as always. Your content is the perfect companion when exercising on the treadmill. Keep up the good work.
Had to bust out the popcorn for this one. Great video series, thanks for the memories.
Amazing video as always mate, the Pit Fighter situation is funny because the Mega Drive conversion ended up being the best, just imagine the other ports lmao, and about Cadash i personally prefer the Mega Drive music to the arcade.
I was born in the late '70 so this is mine and my time line. Nintendo, Sega wars great timing in gaming. I was a SNES guy.
Thanks for these awesome videos and keep up the great work
Thank you for the immense amount of content you create on a regular basis. It's absolutely some of the best video game stuff on TH-cam.
The Arcade experiences at home are is some of your best content SLX. Keep up the great work!
You are so well spoken. The way you explain things and choice of words is always top tier.
You really pour on the nostalgia at the last paragraph. Thank you.
Love your narrative and passion you put on each video. Thanks for the hard work Lord!
I absolutely love your channel my man 🤘🤘 I always look forward to see if you've posted a new video.
Glad to hear it.
This series brings back a lot of good memories.
Cheers!
Thanks for dropping this video, I love your content man. Been watching religiously for awile now!!
Keep it up man, good shit 👌
NBA Jam TE was made at the company i worked for back in the day. I was only 16 at the time and these guys gave me a job. I got to work on Shadowman after this.
Man you need more subs! Between you and Game Sacks, it’s channels are my go-to for glorious gaming nostalgia
So no Part 4? I had a Saturn back in the day and i absolutely loved it! You did an amazing job!!!!
This is a great series. Always look forward to your content.
Haveing a great time with this series Mel!! Hitting it out the park, bud! Wayyyy out!
Glad you started showing both versions of the games with sound.
Really enjoying these videos! It's hilarious to me to look back at games I could have sworn were arcade perfect and they just absolutely weren't.
This is the best series of videos you ever produced. :) great job man
Thank you for sharing your memories and feelings.
I'm loving this series! I can tell you put a ton of work into it and it turned out great. Awesome job as usual, SLX!
I really enjoy this new series of videos. Most of the games shown in this video i enjoyed back in the day and even more so now.
Always look forward to your videos.not only full of great info also very well put together and edited
Keep them coming
Arcade experience at home is my favourite series right now
Local retro arcade managed to get a Mega Tech arcade cabinet and it has been an absolute joy to play.
You should check indie games especially the 2D games. People are sleeping on them and it gives you the 16-bit/32-bit/128-bit ie dreamcast feel to it.
@@maroon9273 I play a ton of retro-style games on Steam, it's certinally cool to see how far modern programmers can take old engines. Anyone can throw a filter on a Unity game, but building on something established decades and still uncover new capabilities is something I really admire.
@@n0isyturtle I'm waiting for a open world scaler game.
I learn about new games everytime you do one of these videos thanks
Excellent work as usual @Sega Lord X. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this series and hope you make others along these lines.
I look back and see all these Atari arcade games and wonder why wasn't this on the Jaguar.
When Atari went under it was split into two companies: Atari Games, which was bought by Namco and made Arcade games (and the Tengen Label) and Atari Inc, bought by Commodore founder Jack Tramiel, which made hardware like the Atari ST and Jaguar.
Mortal Kombat 3 on the Genesis was my favorite. So damned good!
Forgotten Worlds on the PS2/Xbox Capcom Collection is the best just for one thing, using the right thumbstick instead of the 2 button set up to spin left or right. It makes it play so much better.
I am enjoying your The Arcade Experience at Home series / thank you :_)
If you make a part 4 focusing on the Saturn and other 5th Gen hardware, I'd love to see it.
My favorite content creator, keep it up man!
Your work is amazing! I'm not a gamer anymore; but, amazingly, I enjoy every of your old school game video. The SNES was my favorite console 🍻🍻 thank you, maaaaan!
Altered Beast and Turbo Outrun were the two " arcade " games i had on my genesis, i love em !
Another great episode. I loved me some Genesis arcade ports.
Reigning sega lord x, blesses the masses once again
Thanks for continuing to put out great content! You're going to hit 100K subscribers real soon!
I was thinking to myself yesterday "I hope there is an Ep 3"
The music in mortal kombat was Bumping. I like it more then the arcade.
Another great vid. I am loving this home arcade series 👍🏻
I've had tons of fun with Captain America and Pit Fighter.
Yeah the Avengers game was good on the Genesis. The SNES version is super jank though. Still the arcade version was the best.
I wasn't aware there was an arcade version back then, when I saw it for the first time my jaw dropped at how better it looked than the home version.
