Yeah. The amount of details put into the sound is insane! I remember I was shocked to hear russian units speaking in genuine russian. (I'm talking about those little talks you can hear when you zoom camera in)
True. The sound design in WIC is pretty immersive. It is such a small thing that most of the people not going to notice right away but it can help or break the game. COH also has hefty sound even for a single unit in many situations they are in. Sad that most of the developer not making a game like this anymore. I'm sure they wanting to but the corporate greed that controls over them disallow it.

It's the explosions. OMG, the explosions. They are so great. And big. And, just, so, God-damn explosive. I've never seen better ones (though the ones I set off in my ex's bin were quite spectacular.)
I just replayed WiC: Complete Edition a few weeks ago and it was a blast! The immersion in the campaign was fantastic and I was able to feel the "cold" war vibe throughout the sessions. The story, soundtrack, atmosphere and everything were just top notch for a game that was released 11 years ago. P.S: Thank you for the video! I'm glad someone finally made a retrospective video about World in Conflict, which has been highly overshadowed and underrated throughout these times. I wish you luck for the future of the channel! We need a new edition of this game, I loved this. There is a very small WiC community on GameRanger. But even for the sole campaign is worth it. I truly don't know this game isn't more popular. We need a 2020 release with just better animations of the story, no more. Even the ingame videos are awesome. Controls are easy to learn and even if at first the interface is overwhelming, with a couple of hours you'll manage right. I repeat, this game deserves a "reboot" , same game, just better graphics. Same story, same actors. Just more advertisement
While it is a very good idea. I..... really doubt it will happen. The original dev who developed this game is now work for Ubisoft ( Ubi bought them btw). And since they have enough problem handle their game ( Remember Tom Clancy's The Division? Yep they developed it), I doubt they will even have time to touch this game. ;)

You mentioned the Soviet campaign missions letting you get used to the units, but from what I recall, the units are almost identical across all factions, with just a very small number of specific active abilities being unique (HESH rounds come to mind) - so, what would be the purpose of getting used to these units? All three factions play essentially exactly the same, the differences are barely more than cosmetic.
If memory serves, the soviet part of the campaign was planed to be part of the base game but was cut during production to stay on shedule. I remember there was even some talk to hand the soviet part of the story in as a free update at a later point. After their change of publisher it was then made into a payed addon.
WiC is not as groundbreaking as you make it out to be. It is a spiritual successor to Massives own Ground Control (2) which has very similar mechanics. Fantastic game though.
Heh I was biting at the bit to point the same thing. WIC is the perfection of a model started with the original ground control, experimented with in ground control 2 and delivered to acclaim in WIC.
I still love the way that they had made some dialogs on different units and if you draw the camera close you can hear the units chatting on their own and in their own language (Soviet Unit in Russian, Leopard 2 crews in German.etc)， it just made more humanity in those units. Endwar(also by Ubisoft) have a similar approach that the infantry units also had chatting dialogs, and that's also one of the reason i like it, as well as Desert of Kharak that also would pop up random radio transmissions between units. Too bad most people dont pay attention to such details these days.
I know right, the detail in WiC was super cool. I never played Endwar - always thought it looked kinda weird. Will definitely cover it sometime though!
What set from this game among RTS games I played like (CnCG, CoH and Red Alert) is their unit grouping system. Like you have group of units assigned to one, then you can assign some units within group one into “two” without removing those units assigned to “one” This gave me more versatility and able to shift back and forth into safe formations without interfering the original order of the main group
I loved World in Conflict for its gameplay and its story, and the characters and just how everything so WORKED. And my god the off-map artillery support...SATISFYING. The fact that more than half of it was set in my hometown and let me enjoy the glorious feeling of defending our shores from the Reds was just icing.
A comment I saw on GOG which may be valuable: "runs like a charm if you apply the patch to give it more memory" ~ Great video Zade, found it via your comment link in Red Alert review☺ It + expansion are currently $10 on GOG-wishlisted. It probably won't be my cup of tea as I prefer a lot more strategic gameplay, but certainly looks to warrant at least one playthru.
I have played the campaign so many times, never was a fan of the multiplayer though. I wish there was a mod that unlocks every unit in the campaign so you could try out various tactics.
This game was so awesome, definitely the best RTS of the mid 2000's I think I enjoyed it more than Tiberium Wars at the time-I think this was Sierra Entertainment's last game before they went defunct.

1:53 Basicalliy the game is a Spin off of the novel by SIR JOHN HACKET: WORLD WAR III. THE UNTOLD STORY. if you everhave read that novel you immediately get some d´déjà vus in your haed going on. The book had been published in 1982 and became world wide a success. It has not only influence other computer games as you mentioned but also Tactical Board games like NATO were you had to defend Middle Europe in the way used in this game. Also the James Bond movie OCTOPUSSY refered to the book. Just mentioning If you are interested there are still a lot of copies of Sir John Hackets reknowned book around
Recently finished the campaign again, even in 2021 it still holds up as a genius piece of game design. Took me about 15-16 hours or so. Side objectives can be a bit of a pain in the dick to complete sometimes, but are all doable if you're quick enough to do so.
WIC has great sounds - sounds of war and soundtracks (Ola Strandh). Also I love their map designs looks like (I love maps like x-mas, riviera, farmland, radar, riverbed and powerplant).
Wow thanks for this video, it definitely made me reminiscent the days of when I played video games a lot. Zade did you play way back when it first came out? I was known as a "pug star" My name in-game was "[THE]Supman". I was the 1st to get all gold metals in the achievements and the 1st to launch 1000 nukes. I also pushed to get #1 in the charts for a week. I quit before the expansion.

This is one of my top 5 games of all time. Woefully underrated. I find myself fortunate that a friend recommended the game to me or I would have missed this gem.
Not only is the gameplay terrific but it's a very well written war story. I like how the complete edition shows both the American and Soviet points of view so it's not simply good guys versus bad guys. It also shows how the war affects the characters and their personal lives.
The lesser popular Supreme Commander was commented by my cousin in 2016 that "you can fucking make a movie out of gameplay footage" is the best illustration of how intense the competition for RTS in 2007 is.
Grew up playing RTS games starting with C&C and Warcraft. World in conflict and Company of Heroes being some of my all time favorite games! Would love to have seen a World in Conflict 2.
you also got tactical aid points for capturing points, if a team pools the points you can get a tripple nuke pretty early in the round and then place them with 10 second intervals to kill 3 spawn waves of enemies.
The end of the first mission in which you liberate West Berlin left my Jaw on the floor. I've never seen carpet bombing depicted in such an awe-inspiring way.
I played a few months ago on a half filled server. =0 Been playing since the demo! This game had everything going for it, I don't see why they didn't follow up with it?!?!
Best RTS of modern warfare ever, especially with Modern Warfare mod and custom maps. There are a few "heirs" but no one can compare with WiC which is also the only one with nukes.
Nice video, I wish you had talked more about soviet assault. The added soundtracks are even better than the previous ones. Not to mention its even super great story.
Oh, man... I absolutely loved the campaign in this game. Maybe it's because I live in a country formerly under the Iron Curtain, or maybe Bannon's redemption arc... I dunno, but it was absolutely glorious!
I remember the one time I was playing the creek map and I moved my soldiers into the town on the one side of the bridge, that was the last I ever saw of em, not one but 2 nukes were dropped on that town to deny the enemy.
I lived in Bellingham WA in 1989. I remember the King Dome. This game had a special place in my heart... and since the rise of CHAZ... it had a new creepy vibe.
I cannot explain how good this game is - favourite PC strategy game, favourite PC single player game. If you like any Cold War movies or games or at all interested in the Cold War, buy it, period. It's all about the story, scenarios, and acting.
I loved this game was a great multi-player rts team work was soo important. General Jay was my tag had my own clan wish i had access to my achievements haha.
It is available on GOG for about 3-4 € at the moment for the complete edition. Currently playing it again. EDIT: make sure to apply a large address aware patch afterwards to avoid crashes.
Oh yeah, it's a good time to replay it now with the proper PC at hand. I remember how FPS dropped severely (below 20) during massive clashings or major airstrikes.
I used to play this game incessantly. But when they changed the multiplayer that blocked you from playing with your friends simply because you had a high rank I finally gave up after getting tired of having to constantly smurf my account just so I could play with friends. I played in random matches with random team mates all the time, but when I wanted to play with friends, I wanted to play with friends. When the game started constantly actively preventing me from doing that, it eventually pushed to give up. It was just too much hassle.
god this game was so fucking good. so depressing there was no successor. 5:05 arty noob spotted! this game was a 10/10 the multiplayer is so satisfying if you play with good players - i've seen some epic comebacks from being totally overrun. miss this game so much :(

I have played a lot of games. But this game I believe has the best Off map support system till now. Also, the engagement ranges of tanks are accurate. Very few strategy games have this. Company of heroes tanks have the engagement distance of 100 mts (based on the size of the streets and buildings) In World in Conflict, you place a Heavy Tank on top of a hill/cliff with a clear line of sight and it has the capacity to shoot halfway across a town. Which is actually realistic. And Bruh the range of the heavy artillery. Finally how an artillery should look like. (The range is still not fully realistic compared, but you can still shoot half way across the map.) Using 2 heavy Artillery in multiplayer and raining fire down on checkpoints is ❤️
Okay, a little bit critique here: When you're saying things like "The sound effects are great" or "The voice acting is good" you should really stop talking and let the audience listen to the in-game sound for a couple of seconds before you continue.
well, the story is actually ripped from a Tom Clancy novel. The premise is almost the same as in Red Storm Rising. Yeah, they mostly build their own story and characters on that premise, but there are plenty of throwbacks to events in the novel. And the alternating Soviet and American plot structure is also found in the book
Tbh i think the voice acting was amazing, just not for the main characters but for when you call in tactical aid "This is Zuler-niner we copy firing for effect over" "Angel bringing in a big one" "Launch codes activated, nuke on the way....may god have mercy on our souls" That last line gets me

Problem is that the RTS Genre died when Starcraft came along and until recently Real Time Tactics (RTTs for short) were not in that high of demand...

The servers are dead long ago like 2015. So sad for a beautiful game that didnt gain that muh attention due to people these days prefer fps games.

You're right that they aren't hugely different, but I think they (and the air support abilities) vary enough that it's worth mentioning!

I was similar! Played so much campaign and co-op against the AI. Great times

This game was so awesome, definitely the best RTS of the mid 2000's I think I enjoyed it more than Tiberium Wars at the time-I think this was Sierra Entertainment's last game before they went defunct.

Something subtle, but the camera was amazing, more immersive and cinematic and gave the whole maps a more open feeling.
1:53 Basicalliy the game is a Spin off of the novel by SIR JOHN HACKET: WORLD WAR III. THE UNTOLD STORY. if you everhave read that novel you immediately get some d´déjà vus in your haed going on. The book had been published in 1982 and became world wide a success. It has not only influence other computer games as you mentioned but also Tactical Board games like NATO were you had to defend Middle Europe in the way used in this game. Also the James Bond movie OCTOPUSSY refered to the book. Just mentioning

Recently finished the campaign again, even in 2021 it still holds up as a genius piece of game design. Took me about 15-16 hours or so. Side objectives can be a bit of a pain in the dick to complete sometimes, but are all doable if you're quick enough to do so.

WIC has great sounds - sounds of war and soundtracks (Ola Strandh). Also I love their map designs looks like (I love maps like x-mas, riviera, farmland, radar, riverbed and powerplant).

Zade did you play way back when it first came out? I was known as a "pug star" My name in-game was "[THE]Supman". I was the 1st to get all gold metals in the achievements and the 1st to launch 1000 nukes. I also pushed to get #1 in the charts for a week. I quit before the expansion.

This is one of my top 5 games of all time. Woefully underrated. I find myself fortunate that a friend recommended the game to me or I would have missed this gem.

Not only is the gameplay terrific but it's a very well written war story. I like how the complete edition shows both the American and Soviet points of view so it's not simply good guys versus bad guys. It also shows how the war affects the characters and their personal lives.

Grew up playing RTS games starting with C&C and Warcraft. World in conflict and Company of Heroes being some of my all time favorite games! Would love to have seen a World in Conflict 2.

you also got tactical aid points for capturing points, if a team pools the points you can get a tripple nuke pretty early in the round and then place them with 10 second intervals to kill 3 spawn waves of enemies.
I never finished WIC but it stuck with me and I loved the setting and once I get my PC fixed I so need to finish it
They actually did motion capture for the cutscenes. It's an odd choice for an RTS, especially all the way back in 2007, but it looks good.

The end of the first mission in which you liberate West Berlin left my Jaw on the floor. I've never seen carpet bombing depicted in such an awe-inspiring way.

Best RTS of modern warfare ever, especially with Modern Warfare mod and custom maps. There are a few "heirs" but no one can compare with WiC which is also the only one with nukes.

Oh, man... I absolutely loved the campaign in this game. Maybe it's because I live in a country formerly under the Iron Curtain, or maybe Bannon's redemption arc... I dunno, but it was absolutely glorious!
I remember the one time I was playing the creek map and I moved my soldiers into the town on the one side of the bridge, that was the last I ever saw of em, not one but 2 nukes were dropped on that town to deny the enemy.
I lived in Bellingham WA in 1989. I remember the King Dome. This game had a special place in my heart... and since the rise of CHAZ... it had a new creepy vibe.
I cannot explain how good this game is - favourite PC strategy game, favourite PC single player game. If you like any Cold War movies or games or at all interested in the Cold War, buy it, period. It's all about the story, scenarios, and acting.

I brought the collectors edition that came with a fake piece of the Berlin wall. Loved this game.
It is available on GOG for about 3-4 € at the moment for the complete edition. Currently playing it again. EDIT: make sure to apply a large address aware patch afterwards to avoid crashes.

Oh yeah, it's a good time to replay it now with the proper PC at hand. I remember how FPS dropped severely (below 20) during massive clashings or major airstrikes.

I used to play this game incessantly. But when they changed the multiplayer that blocked you from playing with your friends simply because you had a high rank I finally gave up after getting tired of having to constantly smurf my account just so I could play with friends. I played in random matches with random team mates all the time, but when I wanted to play with friends, I wanted to play with friends. When the game started constantly actively preventing me from doing that, it eventually pushed to give up. It was just too much hassle.

I have played a lot of games. But this game I believe has the best Off map support system till now.
Also, the engagement ranges of tanks are accurate. Very few strategy games have this. Company of heroes tanks have the engagement distance of 100 mts (based on the size of the streets and buildings)
In World in Conflict, you place a Heavy Tank on top of a hill/cliff with a clear line of sight and it has the capacity to shoot halfway across a town. Which is actually realistic. And Bruh the range of the heavy artillery. Finally how an artillery should look like. (The range is still not fully realistic compared, but you can still shoot half way across the map.) Using 2 heavy Artillery in multiplayer and raining fire down on checkpoints is ❤️
Okay, a little bit critique here: When you're saying things like "The sound effects are great" or "The voice acting is good" you should really stop talking and let the audience listen to the in-game sound for a couple of seconds before you continue.

well, the story is actually ripped from a Tom Clancy novel. The premise is almost the same as in Red Storm Rising. Yeah, they mostly build their own story and characters on that premise, but there are plenty of throwbacks to events in the novel. And the alternating Soviet and American plot structure is also found in the book
