This was hands down the best RTS ever made and the best single player campaign in an RTS ever. I replay it every couple of years. As equal or a remaster would be an instant buy for me.
Its technically rtt because no base building or resource collection and just micro. Rts is the penultimate balance between micro and macro. Making one overshadow another pushes it towards grand strategy or real time tactics. So woc stands together with coh2 and wargame and sudden strike in their rtt genre.
Well 3d RTS is very hard to do. Which is why many spaceship strategy games (Star Wars Empire At War, Battlefleet Gothic Armada) resort to a 2d playing field. Heck one of the hardest thing a fighter pilot has to do, is to accompany three dimensional thinking.
For me, WiC is an absolute timeless masterpiece and one of the best RTSs I've ever played. I loved how WiC's MP is purely based on teamwork and not about memorizing hot keys or a any key stragedy. I still play C&C Kane's Wrath, but you really have to play so much to really get the strategies right as it's all based on time. It was smart by Massive to have Pine Valley as the demo SP map because man.. it's such a memorable mission with extremely high stakes. Miss this game.. One of the games i grew with. I remember the winters of my childhood playing this game, at first when i started it, i was just amazed by the graphics, unit detail and everything in this game. Too bad the franchise died out ... :-(
I remember when the trailers for this started to appear. It did cause a buzz on X-fire's community page due to the nuke shot. Then the MP beta came and people I knew went nuts. We played this soooo much. Even the story was amazing. Sadly my boxed copy disk is not doing so well anymore. Luckily Ubisoft gave both away for free 2 years or so ago.
Man what a coincidence I recently started replaying this on GoG. I still think this is one of the best RTS' ever made, not to mention one of the best campaigns. Alec Baldwin is great as the narrator and the rest of the voice cast is brilliant. Used to play the hell out of multiplayer with friends in high school. With the improvements in graphics and physics, I think a sequel would be amazing, but I don't know if that will ever happen. Least the first game is still widely available digitally.
one thing I really hated about the game is that it didnt give enough focus on infantry. most of the game was spamming tanks and artillery barrages. it felt more like world of tanks.
Infantry gets mowed down way too easily in the open yeah but if you got your AT infantry into buildings or forests along good ambush points, those guys could hold off a lot of tanks by themselves let alone with support from other units
I disagree .... in multi-player games, infantry was a nightmare to deal with once they get setup in buildings...a nusense that u need to spend alot of time on to clear out
One of the things I remembered from the World in Conflict intro was watching a Hind D fly across a mountain and the Sierra logo popping up. I miss the days when Sierra made games. This game was definitely one of my favorite RTS's. I was always jealous of players in multiplayer who could save enough points to call in a nuke. I think I only managed to do it twice and it felt good everytime. Still one of the coolest multiplayer nuke animations I had ever seen. Great soundtrack, and the campaign was really bad ass. The game feels a lot slower now in modern times, but it's still fun for a replay. I also loved how you could add your own custom emblem to the vehicles and they would show up in multiplayer, that was awesome.
you needed a team that pooled points early on to you, so that you could call in a tripple nuke. but not all three at once, the first on the enemy stong point, 10 second wait time, then the enemy spawn and after another 10 seconds the next on the spawn, to delay their reenforcements haha. man that game was a blast solo and multiplayer alike.
I was in the US ARMY at the end of the cold war. This game was well thought out. It was kind of spooky to see some of the scenarios we trained for come to life in a PC game. I am so very glad most of the young people today don't even know what the cold war was. A fitting end to a long struggle.
Thank you for making this video. I wouldn't have been aware that one of my favorite Assassin's Creed installments was co-developed by the guys that made this, Division, and co-developed Far Cry 3.
This game was life from 2007 till CoD 4 was released. The video wasnt able to depict how perfect Massive had the clan system made, the multiplayer chat window , and the in-game community content. It was truly one of the greatest RTT games ever made. If you remember clan §pearhead give this a like :) P.s Never forget the nukebug
I still play this game, there is an amazing mod that makes the game even funnier, which is the Modern Warfare mod, it adds a lot of new units from our days
Hard to believe this masterpiece came out at 2007, still looks gorgeous even today, just shows how incredible it was at it time, aged like fine wine. one of the best RTS i ever played.
the lvl of detail and effort that was put into this game was absurb. i don't want a sequel per say, i just want more studios to take a page out of massive's book, make it so it's still a great game 14 years later. It doesn't even need a remaster, it looks great and still feels great. let's not even talk about having a proper immersive SP mode. good vid
11-99 ! I repeat 11-99 Emergency ! They have Gunships ! I repeat. Gunships ! Need help immediately. America is under attack ! Pure pre rendered graphic imagery of nostalgia.
I really appreciated this video in particular as a former World in Conflict player and an occasional dweller on its online community, Massgate. Nostalgia aside, I do believe that with further research into the game's post-launch period, there could have been more elaborate developments on the multiplayer metagame, with its specificities and issues. The MP required a completely different way to play compared to single player, with a really high learning curve and focus on micro and teamwork synergy. While there were guides and basic tips exchanged in the official forum, I don't remember an effort from the devs to endorse some of these guides and tips and make sure all players got to see them, and the quality of public play suffered from it and led to the game's overall decline. The clan wars metagame could have also been mentioned, especially regarding how this faster-paced (matches were often way smaller than 8v8) and more competitive gameplay mode distinguished itself from the more standard gameplay modes amongst more veteran members of the community. This could have perhaps tied well with the video's overall focus on the similarities to FPSes. It would have also been nice to go into more detail on custom content, like the cinematic editor released by Massive which allowed you to set up camera paths and create in-game cinematic videos in the style of previous trailers. On the modding side, a shoutout to blahdy's Modern Warfare mod, a comprehensive modification of the game that besides updating to a contemporary setting with new units, experiments with completely new realistic mechanics such as networked anti-air and control over helicopters' altitude, would have been neat as well, but it's understandable a GVMERS vid wouldn't go *that deep*. It was a good trip down memory lane, nonetheless. Maybe other regular (and actually skilled) players will find the occasion to comment on their experience with this ambitious game, whether previous or current (I don't know anything about the post-Massgate metagame and community).
Ground control 2 was exceptional, it wasn’t just a game it was a cinematic experience. I replayed the campaign 4-5 times, it was amazing. Later I came back to Ground Control 1 and its expansion, the games were already old but the lore was superb. If they remaster the old games and release them again I’d buy them in an instant. Kudos to the developers for making one of my most favorite games.
@@sebastianmontoya5158 Well the 3 games in the Wargame series were pretty solid (Red Dragon needed a time to get good). The downfall started with the WW2 game after, who's name I don't even remember.
@@Falloutman216 Steel Division: Normandy and Steel Division II. Although I don't think it's their fault. Eugen has been having a lot of legal and labor problems since Red Dragon and it shows on these two titles. The fact that they have to rely on Waagaming to even distribute the game shows a lot of problems behind the scenes.
Wargame titles were pretty solid, the problem is that they are very, very niche and therefore their player base was very small. They clearly took the ideas of WiC and made a game on similar basis but a lot more complex.
I remember buying the game and thinking it will hold me over for awhile until something else comes along and when I first played it I was hooked. Simply put it's one of the most well designed and visually stunning games ever made even today it's graphics are still amazing and what they achieved was nothing short of astonishing. Multiplayer is normally something I don't play often in an RTS but world in conflic had the best MP ever made for an RTS it was breath taking at the time really did make you feel like you were fighting world war 3. 8 vs 8 choosing your role was the best idea they could've came up with and iv'e not played a game like it or as good since. Campaign was very good and well written aswell, with some unexpected emotional moments. Would love to play the MP again sometime if people are still playing somewhere.
Never had the pleasure of playing this game I would've undoubtedly enjoyed the hell out of, this channel is becoming a testament to forgotten games who's time was too early, late or short.
Still my favorite strategy game... played hours of it in 2v2 matches when i was back at college. Hella fun to see some of your paratroopers fall into then "just deployed" napalm that your friend was tottaly watching that flank...
5:36 "In a 2008 post mortem on IGN..." Bro, 'post mortem' means 'after death'. PM usually refers to 'pro memoria', i.e. a little summarizing text "for the memory".
Man, tried playing this once. Remember a mission on a beach or harbor town where I had to defend it, which was easy enough until artillery came into the picture, it became more and more hectic, I lost units more regularly and really felt pressured. It enhances the enjoyment of an RTS, makes it really feel like you're part of the action. Sadly never tried continuing it, might pick it up again soon.
This game has been a great experience for me even though the devs have left this game to by itself like you said the community has still loved and given the respect that it deserves and I hope this game gets a sequel or gets remastered
I remember seeing this game it was really interesting and I remember reading an article on a magazine and I heard it was coming to the Xbox 360 sadly as time passed I forgot about it but seeing this and the actual game it’s amazing
I honestly love this game. I bought it on Steam probably in 2016 or 2015. It was so much fun despite being such an old game and a game I hadn't heard about tell around when I bought it.
I am or was C&C fan and fell in love with World in Conflict. For me it was the best strategy game I have played. Because you couldn't spam unites it made me love my unites I had under control. Supporting your Armor team mate by anti air support and softening enemy defensive lines with your artillery strikes ahead was satisfying and immersive.
Being an RTS fan for the past 20 years has been hard honestly. I keep hoping the genre can make a comeback and return to being something we all can enjoy. The days of me enjoying, and in my case being terrible at the first Starcraft game. Amazing unit designs, excellent sound production, voice-overs telling a compelling story, and so many more things.
I picked up this game with a box with a piece of the Berlin Wall inside. This was a game of my college years. I spent countless hours on it and can remember the first time playing through that I was quite happy to not only beat the game, but felt like an actual winner for doing so.
i came back to the game after the recent "events" still a great game, i suppose with the benefit of hindsight the idea of the soviet military being equivalent to the US and NATO now sounds completely ridiculous given their performance in ukraine, however some aspects of the game sounds eerily prophetic, see at the start of every cutscene for the soviet missions you get a propaganda reel from the soviet government, it sounds almost word for word exactly like russian propaganda today, always escalating the situation (ingame the war starts as a last gambit by the soviets to avoid collapse, their economy was crumbling and the west didnt want to help), always blaming everyone but themselves for their own aggression and hiding their failures in the field you go to the RT youtube channel and its full of putin speeches justifying the war, saying its all NATO's fault, you will get practically no negative coverage of the war, only ukranian "atrocities" and sovie-i mean russian victories, none of those columns upon columns of smoking russian vehicles we see in social media posted by ukranians themselves, apparently the war is going amazingly for russia, and yet for some reason they remain bogged down
The russian military today is a pale shadow of it's former self, the Soviet Union had way better offensive capabilities. The modern Russian military is plagued with mismanagement and corruption.
People like should you stop with "russian army is so bad", how did the us army, aka the most powerful in the world, performed against afghan farmers and vietcong farmers ? You're so naive thinking that this would be easy for the russian army
Still playing this game on my computer from time to time .. Still can't take "New York cinematic" out my mind .. WIC and COH are my most favorite RTS of all time ..
Easily one of the best RTS games I ever owned, you don't even see games like this anymore with this level of dedication. Anyone that enjoys cold war history or novels like Red Storm Rising and Team Yankee( Which Capt Bannon is drawn from btw) you will LOVE this game, it definitely deserves a sequel.
As a big rts fan nothing brought enjoyment like watching this game getting the recognition it deserves, personally it's up there with CoH, DoW and men of war.. Good stuff
Still love this game. Every once in a while I install it and play both campaigns. Still haven't seen a game that comes anywhere near WiC. Yes, the Wargame series is also great, but the officer in charge in the Busan pocket is just the game providing some information. Bannon, Webb, Sawyer and Parker (plus Sabatier and the socially awkward Norwegian special forces) were badasses that I grew fond of.

@@spacecowboy1438 many of the games featured on this channel still have active mod support. Eaw has been kept alive by players creating content for the last 14 years. Are you saying they should wait for the community to die first before they do a video on it?
They just did a history on GTA a month ago, and gta v is getting weekly/monthly updates from the developer
@@HumbleHonkingEnthusiast no not at all, developers are still making minor updates and multiplayer support is still going. I'm not sure of the developers details though. I play SW: EaW and I would welcome the vid, but is EaW's story complete?
i find that game really hard lol.
Holy Crap! This was released in 2007? For an RTS of this time, this game still looks insanely good.
A true shame World in Conflict went completely over my head, the concept and gameplay looks like a ton of fun.
Its on gog. Bit pricy honestly , but pick it up on a sale
I always admired the visuals in this game, especially those spectacular mushrooms clouds.
2007 was a pretty good year for rts games.
Even with all the evidence suggesting otherwise, I still hold out hope that they will make another one. I was never much of an RTS player, but WiC was one of my favorite games to play when I was growing up.
This gem needs a sequel right now
My favorite RTS of all time along with Company of Heroes
UbiSoft should assign Massive Entertainment to make its sequel rather than Division 3.
And make the original devs of massive go back and make the sequel one last time
Or TC's Endwar...
they are working on avatar and star wars both singleplayer open world games
@@deepaksingh-ku9uf eh, its not confirmed to be"single-player" only is it? Its 2020/1 UbiSoft we're talking about. I reckon they'll make them live-service (at least one of the two). UbiSoft has changed Massive.
@@SayakMajumder the star wars game is singleplayer story driven only as for the avatar game it was supposed to go live service but they scrapped that idea and massive has full control now
One of the games i grew with.
Balc0ra's Gaming
Man how I miss Xfire. The original one before they thought it would be a great idea to do that esports stuff 🙄
The trailer for the Soviet Assault add-on is still one of the best game trailers ever made IMO.
I got this game from a giveaway without knowing anything about it, played well over 500h and still easily my best multi experience.
wtf is a "multi experience"
@@TheDyingScotsman Multi [player] experience
I absolutely love this channel it feels like a series u wud find on any history channel on tv, Thanks
The trailers for this game were jaw droppingly beautiful. I'd like to request The rise and fall of Dawn of War. Excellent work yet again!
I kind of feel like now is the perfect time for a sequel
Yup I agree I love infantry combat in RTS games and it was too vehicle focused. That’s why I loved company of heroes
I literally almost yelled out loud, "IS THIS THE SOVIET/US GAME I'M THINKING OF?!" before smashing the thumbnail.
No way, I just reinstalled the game and played through the campaign over the weekend what a coincidence.
I nearly cried when Bannon sacrificed himself.
Nice throwback. May I suggest Company of Heroes, next?
Damn, that final shot with the girl looking at the paratroopers gave me chills, I have to get this game rn
It's a good game!
Great game sadly a reality in ukraime right now
I dont know why everytime he starts with "in 199.." it feels so damn good
We still have unfinished business with Malashenko and the campaign in Europe. Chinese also have just entered the theatre as well.
I still play this masterpiece from time to time.
I miss playing this game online. I had a lot of amazing matches just pugging it and coordinating attacks with people on the fly.
Oh, man! Really loved this game! Brings back memories.
If you remember clan §pearhead give this a like :)
P.s
Never forget the nukebug
... and they released it as Ground Control 2: Major Tom.
And it's expansion pack: coming home
LMFAO
I still play this game, there is an amazing mod that makes the game even funnier, which is the Modern Warfare mod, it adds a lot of new units from our days
Hard to believe this masterpiece came out at 2007, still looks gorgeous even today, just shows how incredible it was at it time, aged like fine wine.
one of the best RTS i ever played.
World In Conflict has perhaps one of the best looking nuclear explosions in gaming.
One of my favorite games of all time, I still replay the single player campaign every once in a while.
Still one of my favorite RTS games ever. The satisfaction, awe and terror of detonating a nuke is unparalleled
the lvl of detail and effort that was put into this game was absurb. i don't want a sequel per say, i just want more studios to take a page out of massive's book, make it so it's still a great game 14 years later.
Damn it, Bannon!!!
Loved this game, need more Cold War era strategy games out there.
The History of Wargame? The one by Eugen Systems.
You mean "The downfall of Wargame/Eugen Systems", right?
@@sebastianmontoya5158 Well the 3 games in the Wargame series were pretty solid (Red Dragon needed a time to get good). The downfall started with the WW2 game after, who's name I don't even remember.
@@Falloutman216 Steel Division: Normandy and Steel Division II. Although I don't think it's their fault. Eugen has been having a lot of legal and labor problems since Red Dragon and it shows on these two titles. The fact that they have to rely on Waagaming to even distribute the game shows a lot of problems behind the scenes.
@@Falloutman216 fuck Eugen Systems. I'm still salty over that bullshit they pulled with R.U.S.E.
Wargame titles were pretty solid, the problem is that they are very, very niche and therefore their player base was very small.
They clearly took the ideas of WiC and made a game on similar basis but a lot more complex.
Perhaps the best RTS game I have ever played. Thank you guys for giving it the honor it deservers.
I played this game for so many hours, I still got the original box
One of the best strategy games i've ever played, the campaighn, the music, the graphics and the gameplays - everything was perfect
The trailer of this game showing the battle at Liberty Island was badass.
One of the greatest games ever produced. A real shame the IP got "buried" along with said developer.
To this day i still return to this game from time to time to get a "fix" Bannons tragic storyline is somewhat masterfully made in my mind.
Thank you for making this video. WiC is a cult hit that I have loved for years. Thank you!
Never had the pleasure of playing this game I would've undoubtedly enjoyed the hell out of, this channel is becoming a testament to forgotten games who's time was too early, late or short.
You are the best. Will you ever be doing Dark Colony game ?
"-Sir... I just wanted to say I'm sorry.
-No need, Captain. I'm humbled to have served with you."
One of my favorite moments in gaming.
One of the best YT creators!! Delta Force and novalogic would be nice. Thanks
Still my favorite strategy game... played hours of it in 2v2 matches when i was back at college. Hella fun to see some of your paratroopers fall into then "just deployed" napalm that your friend was tottaly watching that flank...
5:36 "In a 2008 post mortem on IGN..."
Bro, 'post mortem' means 'after death'.
WiC needs a sequel
This game has been a great experience for me even though the devs have left this game to by itself like you said the community has still loved and given the respect that it deserves and I hope this game gets a sequel or gets remastered
I remember seeing this game it was really interesting and I remember reading an article on a magazine and I heard it was coming to the Xbox 360 sadly as time passed I forgot about it but seeing this and the actual game it’s amazing
God, I love this game. I still play it from time to time. The campaign is just sublime
Was one of the only RTS games I felt was on par with C&C and CoH 👍🙏
I honestly love this game. I bought it on Steam probably in 2016 or 2015. It was so much fun despite being such an old game and a game I hadn't heard about tell around when I bought it.
MY FAVORITE RTS! I wish the Xbox 360 version came out
One of the best RTS ever. I still play this game every 1-2 years.
the story was very well done, i came back to play this again recently with all the ukraine stuff going on
I am or was C&C fan and fell in love with World in Conflict. For me it was the best strategy game I have played. Because you couldn't spam unites it made me love my unites I had under control. Supporting your Armor team mate by anti air support and softening enemy defensive lines with your artillery strikes ahead was satisfying and immersive.
Oh HELL yeah. Sunday made.
Next vid request: Rise and Fall of RainbowSix
Keep up the phenomenal work!
Ghost Recon too!
Ground control is a game that needs more love and I'm glad you brought it up.
Oh wow! world in conflict! haven't heard that name in awhile!
Also First?
Being an RTS fan for the past 20 years has been hard honestly. I keep hoping the genre can make a comeback and return to being something we all can enjoy. The days of me enjoying, and in my case being terrible at the first Starcraft game. Amazing unit designs, excellent sound production, voice-overs telling a compelling story, and so many more things.
Fuck consoles anyways.
The campaign was, and still is, the most epic RTS campaign I’ve ever played.
I wish we can have this style of campaign in wargame red dragon.
Such MASSIVE waste on RTS esports potential...
I picked up this game with a box with a piece of the Berlin Wall inside. This was a game of my college years. I spent countless hours on it and can remember the first time playing through that I was quite happy to not only beat the game, but felt like an actual winner for doing so.
i came back to the game after the recent "events" still a great game, i suppose with the benefit of hindsight the idea of the soviet military being equivalent to the US and NATO now sounds completely ridiculous given their performance in ukraine, however some aspects of the game sounds eerily prophetic, see at the start of every cutscene for the soviet missions you get a propaganda reel from the soviet government, it sounds almost word for word exactly like russian propaganda today, always escalating the situation (ingame the war starts as a last gambit by the soviets to avoid collapse, their economy was crumbling and the west didnt want to help), always blaming everyone but themselves for their own aggression and hiding their failures in the field
you go to the RT youtube channel and its full of putin speeches justifying the war, saying its all NATO's fault, you will get practically no negative coverage of the war, only ukranian "atrocities" and sovie-i mean russian victories, none of those columns upon columns of smoking russian vehicles we see in social media posted by ukranians themselves, apparently the war is going amazingly for russia, and yet for some reason they remain bogged down
The russian military today is a pale shadow of it's former self, the Soviet Union had way better offensive capabilities.
The modern Russian military is plagued with mismanagement and corruption.
People like should you stop with "russian army is so bad",
how did the us army, aka the most powerful in the world, performed against afghan farmers and vietcong farmers ? You're so naive thinking that this would be easy for the russian army
Still playing this game on my computer from time to time .. Still can't take "New York cinematic" out my mind .. WIC and COH are my most favorite RTS of all time ..
Easily one of the best RTS games I ever owned, you don't even see games like this anymore with this level of dedication. Anyone that enjoys cold war history or novels like Red Storm Rising and Team Yankee( Which Capt Bannon is drawn from btw) you will LOVE this game, it definitely deserves a sequel.
Love the explosion effect. Units movement was smooth. Great maps with different mood. Fun coop gameplay. One of the best RTS.
I'm so glad that you are covering this. I must've played this at least 10 times through the campaign.
This game was ahead of it's time. Sound and gfx still look great!
This game needs a sequel or remaster. Such a unique experience and the mission in Colorado is still one of favorite moments in any game to this day
Loved this game!! I can still vividly remember how awesome the fuel air bomb looked! What times... back in high school days...
