The great sayiaman arc is my favourite arc in the Buu saga and nobody can change my mind. DB is at its best when it is not taking itself too seriously… and it wasn’t too much of a spit in the face, in the sense that it wasn’t pushed in our face that Gohan was weaker (with the exception of Vegeta statements), unlike in the Dabura fight. Videl is a great character too.
I'm actually fine with Gohan in the Buu arc. People have expectations for Gohan that just wouldn't have made the series better imo, because Gohan never really had to earn his power and if he just kept being the guy that does nothing but get angry and he just surpasses everyone all the time and the lead character, it just wouldn't have been interesting. Gohan fans just don't want him to lose, and kind of want a Gary-Stu out of him (and if it were up to the fandom he would be). I think it was fine that Gohan didn't get the spotlight after the Cellsaga because he said he doesn't really feel the need to train. If Gohan beat Buu when he became Ultimate Gohan, and ended the arc there, it just wouldn't have been earned. People also like to ignore all the character development Goku, Vegeta and Gohan got, outside of the fights in this arc. The only time I think they mishandled Gohan was, after the Buu arc where he loses once to Buu and never fights a main villain again, and just gets even weaker because Toei doesn't get how Ultimate worked, and revert him to the pre-Babidi arc status quo.
It seemed like the intent was to switch from Goku to Gohan as the protagonist, but Gohan is so different that Toriyama didn’t like how it worked and in the end, Vegeta has kinda become what Gohan would have been in terms of a duo with Goku.
This is the correct answer. A lot of people don't get. Toriyama wrote characters based on how they could serve the plot at the time he had them on hand, and he just didnt know how to write Gohan as Goku, when Goku is the one who wants to fight and looks for challenges. Gohan doesn't. He only gets mad, but loses when his enemies outsmart him. Gohan would have lost to SPC if not for Goku coaching him again. The only thing you can argue is that Gohan should have at least been a bit more productive. When Gohan has a need to fight, is when he shines, like in the pre-TOP fight he had, where he was fighting when he had a reason to and in the TOP. Without a motive Gohan doesn't really make sense to lead the cast. Same with Piccolo. Where a Goku is the plot device that attracts bad guys to fight, and he loves it.
Such an underrated and overrated arc in the series. The beginning was so strong and the end was amazing. Yes some of the middle with the fusions and gohan may have been a lil long but I feel like people don’t look at it how it’s truly intended. The whole point of this arc is to push the whole future generation idea, but it doesn’t work. That doesn’t make this arc bad at all, in adds on to the characters like Goku and vegeta. And the buu arc was when toriyama wanted to do what he loved the most. Ppl make rumors of how toriyama felt but this was him at his most free. No editors on his buttall the time. Just toriyama doing what toriyama does. And a lot of the fights were so fun to watch even if they didn’t kill buu. It all added up to the main idea which would be implemented to the final part of ending buu. Everyone together in unison with the spirit bomb. Reading this arc and seeing how toriyama works, was truly amazing and yes at times dumb. But no means a bad arc at all. Jus not as a good as the other perfect arcs prior. But this ending was amazing for dragonball.
Yeah as a character it looks like Gohan broke the moment we loved him. Gohan snap and transformation to ss2 was best and at the same time worst moment as a character.
It’s really annoying how since we all know how much potential Gohan had/has, everyone wants to love him, but he just grew up kinda lame and so magically bounces between average joe and super hero as the story needs him to.

It's just inaccurate or poorly researched and shouldn't be publisher unmoderated if you are a fan of toriyama's creation instead of a pop cultural creation that is universaly recognized like most people.
