    How refreshing to hear someone pronounce apoptosis correctly. A fascinating talk. Thank you.

    Great talk. I had no idea how complex the SASP was before this talk. Thanks so much for studying it in such great detail and thanks for participating in this conference!

    These phenomena are always more complicated than one might initially think

    do you think a combination of telomerase gene therapy and senolytic therapy, such as dasatinib and quercetin, can have an affect of prolonging healthspan in people who are already exercising and have healthy diet?

    Great talk, but it's the exact same talk she gave to another online conference. I guess this & that conference happened at the same time. I was hoping for some new glimmer of information.

      Yes researchers typically do this especially if events happen close together. So they often prepare a particular talk and use it at multiple venues. A lot of work and effort goes into preparing a talk so it's understandable to see some repetition.

    Wouldn't killing senescent cells cause the same problem as suppressing SASP ? If senescent cells are killed off, they're not secreting anymore and the 3 paths you mentioned are blocked again.

    • @ChrisJohnsonHome
      @ChrisJohnsonHome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From what I understood, you don't want to block these 3 pathways for all cells just to reduce the dangerous secretions from the secretory cell type, since these 3 pathways are a necessary part of healthy cells. It's better to target the secretory cells only, and reduce their number by about 80%. This would have no effect on those 3 essential pathways, but would still reduce the secretions, since it would eliminate the secretory cells.

    not a fan she clearly doesnt think we can live forever or even barely extend lifespan

    • @nozhki-busha
      @nozhki-busha 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think any credible researchers think anyone is going to live "forever". Longer and healthier lives for sure and perhaps the defeat of aging, but that isnt going to stop you dying from other things. There are plenty of ways to die and our field just works on aging and bringing that under medical control, we cannot stop you being murdered, killed in a car accident, a falling piano landing on you, natural disasters killing you, bear attacks, or the many other ways you could die. I think its very important to understand and recogise what gerontology/rejuvenation biotechnology seeks to achieve vs the transhumanist sci-fi/fantasy of immortality. Two very different things and our field only works on aging, nothing more.

      Where did you hear that ? I listened to the entire session and no where does she suggest that.
      All she said toward the end is that as organisms grow more complex, it appears there are more and more drivers that determine the max life span and we have a ways to go to figure all of the intervention mechanisms to extending max life span in humans.
      Eliminating senescent cells is one way to increase healthspan (which is already progress) but we don't know enough to say if it in itself is sufficient to extend lifespan.

      @@nozhki-busha ok well ill create an ability to sense future disasters before they happen.. like how animals can sense natural disasters before they happen... in terms of human death by another human one would need to be a very positive person to positively affect others around you which would in turn decrease your chances of dying by another person or animal. this is known as " love thy neighbor and thy enemy".. it is actually very effective at preventing death.
