I would happily watch an entire series about that hilarious native american couple just sarcastically cruising through the apocalypse, to be quite honest.
Graham Greene, I know him from the movie Dances With Wolves, & Elaine Miles, I know her from the TV series Northern Exposure, she was a regular. Good show too.
Great craig mazin quote from the after credits talk they had on this episode. “Joel makes Ellie less afraid, but the thing Ellie hasn’t quite realized yet is that she makes Joel more afraid.”
17:15 My favorite subtle moment in this episode that a lot of people missed, when Ellie leaned in and rested her cheek against Joel's back. I thought it was such a tender moment for her and I think he noticed too because he smiled.
I wasn't sure if it was because of that, or that she believes him that everyone loved contractors 😂 Since she told him earlier that he could make it up and she would believe him
I can understand why Joel could be upset with Tommy. If Tommy could've sent a simple "Don't worry I'm ok" message they wouldn't have been in such a rush to get a battery. Tess may have never been bitten.
The Native American actors playing the old couple at the beginning were great! One of the few rays of sunshine in an otherwise heartbreaking series. They had me cracking up at their banter! 😂 Great reaction!
Ellie had enough of the infection in her for those machine readers to mark her as positive as we've seen, but since the dogs are trained on fully infected individuals (presumably at least) it makes sense that it didn't mark Ellie as "turned".
My underrated moment of the episode comes when they first enter Jackson. The camera pans past a corner building and reveals a kind of platform upon which Tommy is revealed. On a cursory glance, one would be forgiven for mistaking it for a gallows like those set up by FEDRA in Boston to hang "criminals." Instead of it being a tool for tearing down those who would challenge the government's authority, though, it's actually some kind of scaffolding for a crane being used to lift up something that's rebuilding an aspect of society that was lost during the two decades since the outbreak.
Pedro and Bella have been crushing it, but man, Pedro took it to another level in this episode. When Joel breaks down to Tommy, he was phenomenal. When Joel and Ellie have it out, you can see his INSTANT change when she brings up Sarah. He was just amazing.
@@VerowakReacts Oh excellent! I’ll be tuning in for sure if you do! I think they’re different enough that you’ll still get a lot out of playing it, despite knowing the story.
Another enjoyable reaction. The "not my daughter" conversation between them is one of my favorite conversation in the whole game. I am glad, they did it justice. (They did not include my favorite line from Joel, but at least the rest is perfect.) It is a good episode. I wasn’t the biggest fan when I first watched it but it grew on me with the reactions.
😺 Verowak 😺 I'm of the mind that Joel's issue is due in part from him pushing his feelings down and not dealing with them, ever since Sarah passed. But part of it could be from other physical issues (heart attack, age, etc.). I'm glad he at least admits to "Lady Mormont of Bear Island" that he does care for her, and she for him. Saying anything more would require him to face his feelings, including those he's suppressed. "The Option" was probably the only way he could think of 'to keep her' as he realized he loves her as his daughter and can't let her go. A "tell-all" will be when he starts accepting/granting her requests/'wishes.' "They both" need a talk, I don't know if Joel can do it. I'm hoping Lady Mormont will push him a bit.
I'm really enjoying your reactions to 'The Last of Us'! They really need to give Pedro Pascal his Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best actor for this series right now.
Crying Simulator is 100% correct. "I'm failing in my sleep" was when it caught up with me. Brilliant acting I can't say that enough and the adaptation is the best I have ever seen from a video game. To answer your question "What character from a different series were you afraid for?" Going to have to go with a classic movie on this one Aliens with Sigourney Weaver. Near the end where she gets rambo'd up and rides the elevator down to the queens hive to find Newt. When I first watched it, it was pure panic! Amazing movie and acting all around as well🙂 Awesome reaction thanks so much Vero!

"Welcome to the Crying Simulator" 10/10 title. No notes. This episode! My heart can't take 3 more episodes like this, hot dang. The analyst in me just wondered why, if Tommy knew how important Ellie was, and knowing how much weaker Joel is, he didn't try to barter in town with some people to escort them to the location and back? And now Ellie is stuck who-knows-where with zero first aid training in the winter wilds. I hope like you said, someone can help in those houses, or maybe the train nearby? This episode was heartfelt and heartbreaking. I'm glad they at least had a good last few days together. BUT JOEL SURELY YOU HAVE PLOT ARMOR?! I can't even.
What I assume is the good news is that the remaining episodes won't be like this... the bad news is I think they'll be worse somehow?! It would have been nice if Tommy sent some people to help them, if I was Tommy, I would have gone WITH THEM! I hope the plot armor is strong with this one... I don't know how I'll handle the next episode if Joel doesn't 😭
I do feel like a lot of Joel's issues are a lot less actually about physical stuff (other than the hearing loss), and more him having 20 years of trauma and guilt around feeling like he should have been able to protect Sarah (and Tess, Henry and Sam, etc.) but wasn't able to, and him no longer being able to suppress it all with Ellie in the picture, you know? So if I had to guess, I'd imagine Tommy probably understood that, and so he recognized that Joel coming around on taking Ellie himself was him having at least started working through the trauma and fear enough to be ready to take that step. Obviously it's still always safer to have 2 adults on hand rather than 1, so it would have been helpful regardless, but Tommy had only agreed to go so that Joel wouldn't have to. So probably once Joel was up for taking that leap and going, Tommy was glad to be able to stay back and not put himself at risk with Maria and their to-be-born child counting on him. But yeah, without going into spoilers: it's going to be an intense last few episodes closing out the season! 😩This show it too dang good at hitting you right in all the feelings!
@@stephaniel2850 I think you misread my comment. I was wondering why Tommy didn’t try to get someone ELSE to travel with Ellie and Joel. Tommy don’t care I guess! Too busy new life, they don’t need a cure in Commune!
Went through the exact same gamut of emotions that you did watching this episode - and I really enjoyed your post-show thoughts! Can it be next week already please?!!
It's a great episode with what the show runners call Emotional Action. I love all the feelings and bonding and intensity of the character relationships shown this ep
In video games, you get access to better equipment as you level up; Ellie's clearly got enough XP now that she can get a diva cup instead of scrounging for tampons like in episode 3.
Such great performances in this one. And great reaction too! Your eyes and your hands were working overtime in this one :) Oh, and to answer your question about what character in a different series I was afraid for... basically everyone in Mazin's Chernobyl series! Made the dumb decision to watch it concurrently with this series, so Sundays were particularly brutal 😂 But Chernobyl is only 5 episodes, so now I'll only be wrecked by this series for the remainder of the season :)
I've heard that Chernobyl is great! I put it on my list to watch this year. I feel like this show has such amazing characters and the actors are all fantastic
@@VerowakReacts Looking forward to your reactions to Chernobyl if you decide to put them on youtube!! And yes, I totally agree, the amazing characters and actors really elevate TLOU to something extraordinary.
My personal favorite episode is 5, but this is definitely number 2. Initially, I thought the horse in the last scene was fake because it didn't move. But trained horses can stand perfectly still if their reins are touching the ground (ground tying), and apparently, a relaxed or half-sleeping horse will on occasion raise one of its legs, so the horse definitely could've been real.
It was real. If you notice Joel's horse when they first get to town is not so trained so the rider behind him takes those reins when Joel gets off to go greet Tommy.
This is one of those episodes that you definitely want to re-watch at some point after season 2 or playing both games. The next episode "Left Behind" will answer some of your questions. This is intentionally ambiguous. :)
@@VerowakReacts I Perry's defense: The terrain wasn't exactly working in his favor there... no narrow bridges to break and no deep chasms below... and he wasn't in the club of servants of the Secret Fire either 🔥 Guess we can agree he just didn't fulfill the prerequisites for getting some epic last words of defiance xD
The reason Joel didn't have his gun was because he intended to steal the horse and leave. Nobody knew he was going. It would stand to reason Maria or Tommy would give Ellie her gun back when she was packing to leave town.
Im native, and we have a bug out "hide out" stashed w/ food/weapons. First made by my Marine mom in her teen years after boot camp. Everyone said she was crazy for doing this, but us elders all still maintain it to this day. And to joel, its a serious condition... i majored in biochem in college and specialize in Neuro. I know whats happening... which is why my daughter hates me for knowing everything (and doing nothing). I didnt pass my last exam so im not certified, but when my eyes lock... i know something. You didnt play the game, neither did my daughter (to the end)... and she hates where this is going, but i trained you for this.
The part where Joel breaks down finally, and tells Tommy how afraid he is really hits me hard. There is just something about watching a strong man with a hard exterior break down that turns on the water works for me. I can watch women and kids cry all day long and I'm just like.. eh.. lol.
Some things were slightly tweaked, but overall they absolutely nailed the scene in the bedroom with Ellie and Joel. And I also like that he ultimately gave her the choice to decide, despite probably knowing who she'd choose
This episode sums up the game perfectly - Serious but funny/goofy, serious again, frustrating, action, sad, and all hope lost? (the game, now the show, gives you all the feels!).
@@VerowakReacts That scene when Joel just pours out his heart about his fears and shortcomings to Tommy was just amazing, I'm tearing up again (goddammit) just thinking about it. It was such a disappointment when Joel in the earlier scene was kinda acting entitled towards Tommy, but then the writers switched it on us and you 100% get where he's coming from. ;(
@@phj223 Joel definitely feels very real, I didn't feel like he acted entitled, just that he didn't really know Tommy and didn't really know if he could trust him anymore.
@@VerowakReacts Maybe entitled isn't the correct phrase, but I thought it was weird of him to just assume that Tommy would risk everything and go along with him and Ellie, seeing how Tommy had a good life in the fort. The "normal" reaction I feel would have been to simply ask, and acknowledge the fact that he's asking a lot, particularly when Tommy said he was going to be a father. Instead Joel got annoyed, and I was like "really bruh?" But it sets up the scene later on, which was just perfection.
@@phj223 And I think that's why this show is so great. People react certain ways and it's usually not the most rational way lol It did set things up very nicely though!
In the game, while it is grim, there is a power fantasy aspect to it, as with most games. Without that, the show feels almost *relentlessly* grim. Like you said, the crying simulator. I still love it, just an observation.
Joel says “everybody love contractors” because I think he needs being loved so much. He feels so lonely and He sees like Ellie his daughter. I’m so sorry about Joel.
You say you don't want to see the Balrog again, (it's actually called a bloater, don't think we will see it again this season) but have you seen the guy who was in the suit? Even as a straight man, I gotta say DAMN!
Only 7 seconds in, had to stop. "The Crying Simulator" You mean "The Crying Inducer" don't you? But you got a smile from me with that. I thank you. Joel: "Get behind me." Verowak: "You're surrounded though" Me: "There is a drop off to the river , they aren't going to 'fly their horses over the river' so she could position herself between the river and Joel, so there's one avenue of possible escape if fleeing becomes necessary. Though in the temperatures likely, probably a short lived escape." 12:40-13:56 I could try to grab the specific instances, but there's so much in this 1 minute and 16 seconds of the reaction captured here. Joel blames himself, and any parent would, if their child died in their arms, because they couldn't do what they saw as their "one and only, most important job" protecting their child. He's been carrying that burden 20 years, and he's realizing aspects of how many time things would have been different if Ellie wasn't there to save him (admittedly he wouldn't be in many of those situations if not for her, but when you're blaming yourself, it's easy to add the extra burden without placing blame outside yourself) Joel feels like he's been failing Sarah for 20 years, and he's afraid of failing Ellie. It's hard to admit someone else would be better to do the job you accepted. Next up Joel comes to see Ellie, and Ellie drops truth bombs, and Bella Ramsey is phenomenal in the delivery. [I felt that, and I'm not even the person who is there that she hit] 16:50-16:55 your comments made me have to mention this. Joel never touched that rifle before that day. He took 2 shots to find it's aim. Most of the shooters I know, mostly from handgun training, need 4-10 shots to acquire the specifics of a gun. I am familiar with only 2 rifles. If you hand me "the same rifle" but not the same specific" rifle, I'm going to need to learn that rifle. Probably 12-20 rounds at 5 ranges if I want to be accurate. First time learning to use a rifle at "rifle short range" I think I burned up about a 50 round box. I learned handgun and shotgun firing a slug as a kid, Didn't start learning rifles until I was in my 30s. [What I'm getting at is, pick up a rifle you don't know, and make a hundred yard shot, you'll have to adapt. If it's not a model he's familiar with, he's got a lot of skill to pick up a headshot at range last episode with only 2 shots to gauge off of, and then feel comfortable enough to make those close shots . Even 2 rifles of the same design have nuances. This rifle is Tommy's, just with a different scope, he's probably fired it a number of times before, and he knows if his brother would keep it true (which a hunter would), and would have advised if it was off] 19:50-20:00 Neither of these actors are in the scenes that come to mind, but I was pulled to this. "A Khal who cannot ride, is no Khal." (Series they are both in, Neither were even introduced by the time of this scene.) 25:45-23:05 Graham Greene, I've never seen him in any significant part (i.e. more than 12 seconds of screen time) that I didn't consider great or better.. Elaine Miles is always a pleasure to encounter. These are the couple [Marlon and Florence] in the beginning of the episode. "short end of the stick" is apt. "the worse end of an unfair deal" while "drawing the short straw" is more of the "you get to be the one to do this thing none of us want to do."
I lost it twice. One, when she laid her head in his back and two, after he fell and her little hand was in his cheek. Ugh I need a tissue and a testosterone patch
The native couple reminds me, you should watch the series "Reservation Dogs" (I don't mean the movie Reservoir Dogs). If you want more of that kind of humor, it is a great series. Taika is Executive Producer and writes for it some, but it is very heavily a Native American run, crewed, cast production..
I beg to differ. This isn't a crying simulation. All the crying done is genuine and not simulated... at least for me it is and I don't think yours is either. 😉

@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 No :( basically half the country away, I don't have mountains near me sadly
@@VerowakReacts Well i'm in Manitoba so I understand that. You single? 🌹
@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 I'm in the far end of Ontario lol Not single nope :)
I love that couple in the beginning😂
They are fantastic 🤩 Just the right amount of everything
"As I said, this is a crying simulator... It is known... sigh"
Brought out the GoT dialogue for that
I did!! 🤣
It's a great episode with what the show runners call Emotional Action. I love all the feelings and bonding and intensity of the character relationships shown this ep
The bonding was great! Joel being scared now that he has Ellie is heartbreaking
"May be there's a doctor in one of those house's" pmsl
It's possible! 😭
Hi! I am from Brazil. I love your reaction. you are a good hearted person
Thank you, and thank you!
@@M_X_T_R It will eventually go on TH-cam, that's for sure!
@@VerowakReacts FANTASTIC! Thanks!
Good react. You are a very empathic person 😀😀
Thank you! I can be yeah lol. Plenty of heartbreak while watching this series
I like when she get anxious and put her hands in her hair
My personal favorite episode is 5, but this is definitely number 2. Initially, I thought the horse in the last scene was fake because it didn't move. But trained horses can stand perfectly still if their reins are touching the ground (ground tying), and apparently, a relaxed or half-sleeping horse will on occasion raise one of its legs, so the horse definitely could've been real.
I had no idea! pretty amazing how calm the horse was then :D
It was real. If you notice Joel's horse when they first get to town is not so trained so the rider behind him takes those reins when Joel gets off to go greet Tommy.
@@gailseatonhumbert That's so neat. I love how everyone has different knowledge and can spot different things 😃
Crying simulator indeed! I'm glad you've been enjoying the show and your reaction videos have been great 😃
I fear it'll just become a more intense crying simulator with the remaining episodes 😭
This is one of those episodes that you definitely want to re-watch at some point after season 2 or playing both games.
The next episode "Left Behind" will answer some of your questions. This is intentionally ambiguous. :)
that old native couple need to be protected at all cost "you made him soup?" "well yeah it's cold out there"
This series was filmed in Alberta. There are already tours of the locations!!
I love it when movies are filmed in Canada!!
I love how Verowak is still calling it a Balrog
I'm just hoping someone stands up to one and says "you shall not pass"!
@@VerowakReacts I think Perry was just about to say that... but then he lost his head... unfortunately for him quite literal... 😏
@@wolfwynterson7183 He would have lacked the confidence in his words though lol
@@VerowakReacts I Perry's defense: The terrain wasn't exactly working in his favor there... no narrow bridges to break and no deep chasms below... and he wasn't in the club of servants of the Secret Fire either 🔥 Guess we can agree he just didn't fulfill the prerequisites for getting some epic last words of defiance xD
@@wolfwynterson7183 Very true, the terrain was not good for him. Also, he clearly forgot his staff and had to resort to a useless gun lol
Wonderful reaction from a wonderful soul!
By the way seriously what is that thing on 11:26?
It's a menstrual cup :)
@@VerowakReacts oh thank you 😌 (blushed)
Just hit the subscribe button. Love your videos. To me this episode was a love letter to fathers and daughters.
They're doing so great with the family relationships in this show. It's so real
everyone who played the game should have goosebumps after joel shots the target and the "music" starts
The reason Joel didn't have his gun was because he intended to steal the horse and leave. Nobody knew he was going. It would stand to reason Maria or Tommy would give Ellie her gun back when she was packing to leave town.
"Balrog;" loving your reactions.
Thank you :D I like inserting references from other movies sometimes :D
"we just saw balrog" lmao!
It's funny to see new fans excited to see Tommy alive. I forgot that's not a certainty if you haven't played the game.
I'm glad no one spoiled that fact for me!
Callus. It is the name of that horse Tommy gave to Joel & Ellie
How many sad moments should we put ?
Yes
Definitely yes!
Vero! 16:10 REALLY jinxed it didn't you ;)
It's not my fault, I swear!!!
@@VerowakReacts i know, you are quickly becoming my favourite reactor to TLoU. Let us know if you're playing the game! Checking your twitch...❤️
@@VerowakReacts Totally is! 😤😉😉😢🥺
@@LarsHighelf It releases on PC at the end of March 😭
The part where Joel breaks down finally, and tells Tommy how afraid he is really hits me hard. There is just something about watching a strong man with a hard exterior break down that turns on the water works for me. I can watch women and kids cry all day long and I'm just like.. eh.. lol.
Some things were slightly tweaked, but overall they absolutely nailed the scene in the bedroom with Ellie and Joel. And I also like that he ultimately gave her the choice to decide, despite probably knowing who she'd choose
I loved the couple I'm the beginning 😂
YES!! They were fantastic and so adorable
You said the Crying Simulator 😂😂😂😂 Cant wait for season 2
The crying simulator 🤣 You always crack me up ❤
I only speak the truth lol
This episode sums up the game perfectly - Serious but funny/goofy, serious again, frustrating, action, sad, and all hope lost? (the game, now the show, gives you all the feels!).
cute how emotional you get with some of the dialogue. you're sweet
11:39...so Free-bleeding never did catch on, did it?
I am not certain if you were aware, There is an update on Rogue Tower that needs your skills and vids posted ASAP.
I definitely need to work on those yes!
The big boss is the friends we made a long the way. 😬
In this Universe all the friends are dying 😭
And they'll chop off your head when you get too close. Sounds like a true friend IRL.
There was some masterclass acting in this episode, holy f
Could not agree more! This whole series is just filled with actors perfect for their roles
I wanted Ellie to take him to a caboose. There is normally a 1st aid kid there.
I'm not sure how she'll carry/drag him somewhere
Enjoying The Last of Us reactions on here, they're great. What was your favorite part of this episode? Shot wise, it was 45:46 for me. Incredible.
Amazing version of “Never Let Me Down Again” by Depeche Mode with Jessica Mazin.
In the game, while it is grim, there is a power fantasy aspect to it, as with most games. Without that, the show feels almost *relentlessly* grim. Like you said, the crying simulator.
I still love it, just an observation.
Did the name varowak come from the pokemon marowak ?
It is yeah! My nickname is Vero, so it's a merge of the two that my brothers used when I was a kid
Joel says “everybody love contractors” because I think he needs being loved so much. He feels so lonely and He sees like Ellie his daughter.
I’m so sorry about Joel.
I think he was saying that because Ellie told him that he could make it up and she would believe him, so he tried and it worked 😂
@@VerowakReacts Agreed! You explained better 😅
The difference between Joel and Ellie's loss is that Joel blames himself for his daughter, Riley was clearly not Ellie's fault. It is not the same
You say you don't want to see the Balrog again, (it's actually called a bloater, don't think we will see it again this season) but have you seen the guy who was in the suit? Even as a straight man, I gotta say DAMN!
people not realizing the horse will stay if it thinks its tied up. but he left it untied so it could escape if it had to
Not everyone knows things about horses. Can confirm, I'm one of those people
@@VerowakReacts well now you know :)
Only 7 seconds in, had to stop.
"The Crying Simulator"
You mean "The Crying Inducer" don't you? But you got a smile from me with that. I thank you.
Joel: "Get behind me."
Verowak: "You're surrounded though"
Me: "There is a drop off to the river , they aren't going to 'fly their horses over the river' so she could position herself between the river and Joel, so there's one avenue of possible escape if fleeing becomes necessary. Though in the temperatures likely, probably a short lived escape."
12:40-13:56 I could try to grab the specific instances, but there's so much in this 1 minute and 16 seconds of the reaction captured here.
[I felt that, and I'm not even the person who is there that she hit]
16:50-16:55 your comments made me have to mention this. Joel never touched that rifle before that day. He took 2 shots to find it's aim. Most of the shooters I know, mostly from handgun training, need 4-10 shots to acquire the specifics of a gun. I am familiar with only 2 rifles. If you hand me "the same rifle" but not the same
specific" rifle, I'm going to need to learn that rifle. This rifle is Tommy's, just with a different scope, he's probably fired it a number of times before, and he knows if his brother would keep it true (which a hunter would), and would have advised if it was off]
19:50-20:00 Neither of these actors are in the scenes that come to mind, but I was pulled to this.
"A Khal who cannot ride, is no Khal." (Series they are both in, Neither were even introduced by the time of this scene.)
25:45-23:05 Graham Greene, I've never seen him in any significant part (i.e. more than 12 seconds of screen time) that I didn't consider great or better..
This episode reads a bit differently after seeing the 9th.
It really does! I think the second watch through will be amazing since we'll know a lot more
Hi there

I lost it twice. One, when she laid her head in his back and two, after he fell and her little hand was in his cheek. Ugh I need a tissue and a testosterone patch
On not in.
I never noticed just how tiny her hand is! Those two are just amazing together 😭 And it's so adorable seeing them become closer
This is all filmed in Alberta

Who's cuttin' onions?
I don't know, but I have a feeling they have a LOT of onions left to cut for the last three episodes
@Verowak Reacts I think there are some ogres watching the show too 🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅
❤️❤️
Graham Greene is the best
Look what you've done! This is what happen when you say something like "Will everyone stay alive this time?!"!!! 😤😉😢
It's not my fault, I swear! Wait ... Does that mean I keep failing too? 😭
"Is no one gonna die this episode?"
Forgot what show you're watching, eh?
Well we had 1 episode with no death I think. Perhaps it was time for another 😨
Crying party 🤣😭😭😭
I assume it's only going to get worse somehow 😨😭
The native couple reminds me, you should watch the series "Reservation Dogs" (I don't mean the movie Reservoir Dogs). If you want more of that kind of humor, it is a great series. Taika is Executive Producer and writes for it some, but it is very heavily a Native American run, crewed, cast production..
I had never heard of a TV series called that only the movie. I'll look into it!
I beg to differ. This isn't a crying simulation. All the crying done is genuine and not simulated... at least for me it is and I don't think yours is either. 😉
