Bella was insane in this episode.. her face when joel grabbed her her face when she was buzzing on the stairs etc and then the carousel and then the kiss and then the fkn realisation Reilly was hurt... She absolutely smashed this episode.. i believed every subtle emotion she conveyed... That was pretty special
Bella and Storm's performance this episode was absolutely amazing and I'm just so speechless. Getting to see Ellie's first love was so touching and cute, but at the same time so devastating. 😭 Also can't wait to see you play the game!! Thank you for the amazing reaction once again!! ❤️❤️
Love how Pedro Pascal got to shine in the last episode (when he talks about his fears to tommy...so good omg) and Bella Remsy got to shine in this episode (although he had more emotional parts in the earlier episodes so we got some glimpses)
My daughter cried at the end of this episode b/c I just had a partial intestine removal surgery in November and i spent a week connected to artificial lines in the hosp begging to be discharged so "i can just die at home" (hosp sent a Chaplain to me everyday). My daughter visited me every break she got at the Univ. I finally got home, but I was bed ridden in pain for nearly a month and she had to do everything for me. I didnt get to walking on my own and back at work until Jan this year.
Great reaction. Absolutely evil for them to keep us waiting on Joel's status while simultaneously breaking our hearts for the entire episode. I loved how this was really just a few days before we meet Ellie at the start of the show, and how all of Ellie's little comments throughout the series reference this night. Bella was absolutely stellar yet again. You mentioned getting all the backstory we need - and I do agree, yet I am wanting some more backstory on Ellie based on her conversation with Riley. Riley said something how Ellie never knew what it's like to be part of a family - I just want like, real time travel to some snippets of life growing up in a FEDRA school - because we don't get much from the few minutes here. Maybe the game has more? TWO EPISODES LEFT I feel like so much has to happen???? S T R E S S.
That's my thoughts exactly! Only two episodes left and it feels like we're nowhere near close to the end. I would love to see Joel in the past 20 years, Ellie for the past 10 years, more about the Fireflies, but that's just wishful thinking I'm assuming. I feel like next episode will start the same as this one... not knowing if Joel will survive and worrying!
It makes sense that the Fireflies send their recruits to different QZs. Specifically for the reason illustrated here: "I'd never let them use them near you, or anywhere you might be near."
This episode was tough to get through .. They made us like the relationship between the two of them, then feel the loss. ........ Loss of Riley, Joel in danger, and tragic loss of the lemonade. Lets all take a moment of silence ..........

This channel has become my fav reaction to this series, i already played the game back in 2015 and i am currently watching the show with my dad (he doesn't play games so the story is unspoiled to him) and it's fun to see his reactions as well as yours. For me this show is watching the episode, later watching other 2 channels who does reviews/discussions and your channel. Super excited to see how you react to the final 2 episodes

@@VerowakReacts Since episode 1, as the game is filled with amazing story point after amazing story point. Sarah's departure was even more tragic in the show. I really loved how they did Bill's character. Henry and Sam i liked them more in the show (even though the scene dialogue of the tragedy i preferred more how they did it in the game) But honestly from episode 6 onwards are my fav scenes of the game. Joel crying to tommy was something they added and made the later exchange with ellie even more heart breaking. And i also loved how they did the Ellie and Riley's dance scene, Bella Ramsey nailed the "Don't go" line...actual tears came out of my eyes :(.. I really hope they keep it up for these last two episodes and if they do this will become an easy top 3 fav show for me
Don't diss water, it's the elixir of life, haha..... and far healthier than lemonade. I love that Ellie was immediately mad at having been bit. She wasn't sad, she wasn't scared, she was furious and flew off into a rage. Having finally shown her true feelings for Riley and having them reciprocated and Riley agree to stay, Ellie had just got the one thing she wanted most. It may have even been the only really good thing she's ever had in her life, only to immediately have it taken away from her... and she was pissed! Riley, on the other hand, seemed to feel more of a mix of sorrow and guilt, but I loved that she was determined that they should make the most of whatever quality time they had left with each other. That little clasp of the hand between Ellie and Joel was powerful. As much as Joel wanted Ellie to be safe, I think he was scared and in that moment was truly grateful she had stayed. P.S. Love how empathetic you are, how connected you feel to the characters. Keep on reacting.
I just love how close Ellie and Joel are now, it's so sweet but so sad too. It's also really great to see more about Ellie and what she's been through 😭
What I really liked so far is how they presented Joel as the main character for the first few episodes and then completely switched to Ellie for the last few. Makes the whole show feel really dynamic. Hopefully season 2 will have more than 9 episodess

Arby's, Episode 3 :) Your deeply felt connection to Joel and Ellie is great to experience. Really makes your reaction vids stand out. Easy to see why you're so quickly approaching 10K after only just celebrating 5/6K a little bit ago. Yeah, the waiting for the next episode is horrible. Haha, the only good thing about today being Wednesday (oh, besides the season premiere of Season 3 of The Mandalorian) is that we're halfway to episode 8! :)

Maybe the guns handled in FEDRA School were unloaded without magazines. Therefore lighter, plus, different models of guns are different weights. If she's been training with an unloaded .32, and then Riley has for example a loaded 9mm or loaded .45, there could be a lot of weight difference.
I haven't played the game, either, so just speculating along with the show about the gun weight thing. I figured they maybe had toy guns that they practiced holding, or maybe laser/nerf guns. Maybe even just wood carvings of guns. Or it's even possible that they practiced holding real guns without ammo in them. Ammo actually adds a fair amount of weight to a pistol when it's loaded.
I can explain away Ellie saying that Riley's gun was heavy one of two ways: - Fedra doesn't let young teenagers handle guns (Ellie is 14 in the flashback?). So, this is actually her first time handling a gun at all and she won't be trained on how to carry and shoot one until she's older. Right now, they're just trying to make sure the kids are physically fit and used to a soldier's daily routine. - Fedra does train Ellie, but she's used to a much smaller gun, but the Fireflies may just be using whatever guns they can get their hands on and Riley's gun may be much larger than what Ellie is used to.
Love that you care so much for these characters! Enjoyed getting Ellie's backstory, both Bella and Storm were wonderful in this episode - just wished we'd had a little bit more Joel/Ellie screen time, given the severity of their current predicament (but that's just me being picky, I know)! Always feels like a long wait till the next episode, and I wish we had more than 2 episodes to go!
Scene at the end of the 5th episode l preferred in the show cause of the thing with eliie cause it affected Ellie in that scene as well how she tried to cure Sam with her blood but it did not work and her reaction to when Henry shot himself right after he shot himself and when Ellie wrote sorry or l am sorry and Joel saw it after they dug Sam and Henry s grave at the end of episode 5 and cause Sam was deaf in the show and his brother Henry said he had leukemia and Sam was younger in the show than in the game

If you think malls having carousels is weird, the Mall of America in Minnesota has a full amusement park with a full sized roller coaster, water splash ride and other big rides of that nature.

Another great episode, they did a good job of exploring Ellie's crush on Riley. Bella is a fantastic actor but this episode was on another level, even when she was wearing a mask, you knew exactly what she was thinking. I wasn't particularly convinced with Storm's portrayal of Riley though, maybe it's because there's such a contrast in acting styles. Troy Baker in the next episode, be cool to see him in the show. (Joel's Voice actor in the game)
My local mall has a full carousel. I never gave it a second thought as it has just always been there. But this show with its moments of appreciating things I take for granted like strawberries and seat belts has got me totally wanting to go ride that carousel now just because I can.
I'm very confused by this episode. The obvious reason for the flashback is to show why Ellie decides to stay and care for Joel. It's also mentioned in the Behind the Episode video from HBO. Except: we know that Ellie doesn't leave people she cares about behind. She didn't leave Riley, she didn't leave Sam, and she wanted to stay with Tess. So she doesn't need to be reminded of it. That's why I thought maybe she needed to learn to say no to Joel. Joel tells her to leave and that's why she's about to leave, but she decides to defy him and stay. Except Ellie has been shown to despise authority and not listen to the people in charge all the time. So I'm confused. The creators themselves seem to think that it's to remind Ellie why she should stay but she has always shown her desire to stay. In fact, it would be weird if she left. That would require a flashback, not the other way around.
guns- military issue, the classic Browning/colt 1911 is/was steel, until Glock came out with 'fantastic plastic' polymer hand guns in the 80s, every company followed suit polymer maked up about 50% of the market in 2003, the military being the military they get all the new guns first, so it was possible Ellie was trained on a dummy/polymer gun but 20 yrs in the only usable guns left are the old steel guns.

@@VerowakReacts Usually when it comes to single player/story-oriented games I recommend playing on your own time but in this case you’d already be aware of the story and if you needed any help you could get tips and tricks in realtime. Either way I’d be super interested in watching someone play the game who’s seen the show first. I know of one other TH-camr/reactor who plans on playing the first game after the season ends. I guess it depends on if you’d like to be entirely focused on playing the game or enjoying what the game has to offer while interacting with fans at the same time. Not sure you could go wrong with either.

It sounds like you've played the games as you commented about the mall which is in the dlc. And this is still part of the first game. They've already announced season 2. You should (or at least id hope you'd have the intelligence) to understand that they're probably not gonna kill the main character Joel off pretty early into the first game .

@@SlanglieBeatz In Episode 2 when Joel, Tess and Ellie are walking, it's mentioned that Ellie went inside the mall in the QZ. Tess asks her if she went in by herself and Ellie hesitates... then eventually says yes. I guessed back then that she went with Riley (since in Episode 1, Marlene mentions a Riley, which seemed like Ellie and Riley were close). So to me, that was where she lost Riley, so the flashback showing what happened at the mall would make sense since the show tends to explain things that they mention in previous episodes
Kleenex mandatory for the last two episodes, pre-watch. There's a carousel in the mega-mall next town over from me. It seems a little overkill for a smaller mall, in the show.

Great episode with a lot of character depth for Ellie. If you pay attention, the episode shows you exactly how the story with Ellie and Riley ends. They don't have to show that explicitly. Riley played Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka (last game). Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. I think it's clear she stabbed her. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Also, we've learned that Ellie's first impulse is to leave when she feels pushed away or is pushed away, but she keeps coming back. This is one parallel between Joel and Riley. Another parallel is, both are Ellie's protectors. And don't forget Ellie's greatest fear of ending up alone. In the end, she will try everything possible to save Joel, which she was not able to do with Riley. Ellie has lost Riley and Sam to the fungus. She is the cure. She wants her survival to have value. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is not nice, he is manipulative. This can be seen in Riley who is allowed to supervise the sewage work. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. These also kill civilians, as we saw in Episode 1 on Tess when one of these bombs exploded, killing two teenagers. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. T(w)ogethernes I actually thought Ashley Johnson (OG Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale. Next episode Troy Baker (OG Joel) will get his cameo.
Yeah. You definitely won't like what will happen next episode. :S I'm a little disappointed of this one, because of the removal of the arcade scene from the game, one of the most iconic and meaningful scenes that showed Ellie's vivid imagination (if you're curious: /watch?v=a8XgByLIe9w), which is very much a precursor to another very iconic scene in Part 2. With all the Left Behind references in the previous episodes I also kinda expected to see Ellie having to shoot Riley, but instead they just ended it pretty much like the DLC did, leaving the rest up to imagination. Either way, it was Ellie's first love, her first kiss, her first loss, and her first kill. It also showed that she is suffering from survivors guilt, so she definitely did not want to leave Joel to die alone there. Joel squeezing down on her hand also kinda solidified their relationship that they started to properly accept after Jackson.
Seeing episode 7 for the first time, I was tearful and glad to have had some background behind Ellie and meeting Riley. But I will say that it is my least favorite episode to rewatch.
It's the worst episode of the series so far. Not that it doesn't have necessary elements to further develop Ellie's character, but the way it was executed, monopolizing the entire episode over the Joel arc, basically highjacking it I might even say, was unwise and not consistent with the quality of previous episodes. That's my personal opinion though, you might disagree and that's fine. But for me, it was like hitting a wall after being so hyped with how the previous episode ended. I hope the following episode(s?) will bring back the same level of quality or interesting/relevant arcs.
The Ellie character is more and more of a 20 year old criminal than a 14 year old. Less interesting that way she's just another Tess. That's the script, imho. Regardless, this episode I lost a lot of the immersion because every couple minutes something unbelieveable happens. Arcade games, carousels, escalators, electrical systems throughout a mall all working without maintenance for 20 years? nah. In episode 3 Bill had to bust ass to keep things running.

Maybe the guns handled in FEDRA School were unloaded without magazines. Therefore lighter, plus, different models of guns are different weights. If she's been training with an unloaded .32, and then Riley has for example a loaded 9mm or loaded .45, there could be a lot of weight difference.

I haven't played the game, either, so just speculating along with the show about the gun weight thing. I figured they maybe had toy guns that they practiced holding, or maybe laser/nerf guns. Maybe even just wood carvings of guns. Or it's even possible that they practiced holding real guns without ammo in them. Ammo actually adds a fair amount of weight to a pistol when it's loaded.
Practicing without ammo makes a lot of sense, I never thought of that :D
I can explain away Ellie saying that Riley's gun was heavy one of two ways:
- Fedra doesn't let young teenagers handle guns (Ellie is 14 in the flashback?). So, this is actually her first time handling a gun at all and she won't be trained on how to carry and shoot one until she's older. Right now, they're just trying to make sure the kids are physically fit and used to a soldier's daily routine.
- Fedra does train Ellie, but she's used to a much smaller gun, but the Fireflies may just be using whatever guns they can get their hands on and Riley's gun may be much larger than what Ellie is used to.

Love that you care so much for these characters! Enjoyed getting Ellie's backstory, both Bella and Storm were wonderful in this episode - just wished we'd had a little bit more Joel/Ellie screen time, given the severity of their current predicament (but that's just me being picky, I know)! Always feels like a long wait till the next episode, and I wish we had more than 2 episodes to go!
I enjoyed seeing the backstory too, but tat the same time, I wanted to know what happens with Joel!
Scene at the end of the 5th episode l preferred in the show cause of the thing with eliie cause it affected Ellie in that scene as well how she tried to cure Sam with her blood but it did not work and her reaction to when Henry shot himself right after he shot himself and when Ellie wrote sorry or l am sorry and Joel saw it after they dug Sam and Henry s grave at the end of episode 5 and cause Sam was deaf in the show and his brother Henry said he had leukemia and Sam was younger in the show than in the game

If you think malls having carousels is weird, the Mall of America in Minnesota has a full amusement park with a full sized roller coaster, water splash ride and other big rides of that nature.

Another great episode, they did a good job of exploring Ellie's crush on Riley. Bella is a fantastic actor but this episode was on another level, even when she was wearing a mask, you knew exactly what she was thinking. I wasn't particularly convinced with Storm's portrayal of Riley though, maybe it's because there's such a contrast in acting styles. Troy Baker in the next episode, be cool to see him in the show. (Joel's Voice actor in the game)

My local mall has a full carousel. I never gave it a second thought as it has just always been there. But this show with its moments of appreciating things I take for granted like strawberries and seat belts has got me totally wanting to go ride that carousel now just because I can.

I'm very confused by this episode. The obvious reason for the flashback is to show why Ellie decides to stay and care for Joel. It's also mentioned in the Behind the Episode video from HBO. Except: we know that Ellie doesn't leave people she cares about behind. She didn't leave Riley, she didn't leave Sam, and she wanted to stay with Tess. So she doesn't need to be reminded of it. That's why I thought maybe she needed to learn to say no to Joel. Joel tells her to leave and that's why she's about to leave, but she decides to defy him and stay. Except Ellie has been shown to despise authority and not listen to the people in charge all the time.
So I'm confused. The creators themselves seem to think that it's to remind Ellie why she should stay but she has always shown her desire to stay. In fact, it would be weird if she left. That would require a flashback, not the other way around.
guns- military issue, the classic Browning/colt 1911 is/was steel, until Glock came out with 'fantastic plastic' polymer hand guns in the 80s, every company followed suit polymer maked up about 50% of the market in 2003, the military being the military they get all the new guns first, so it was possible Ellie was trained on a dummy/polymer gun but 20 yrs in the only usable guns left are the old steel guns.
Definitely bring tissues for the next episode. Going to be gut wrenching.

Either way I’d be super interested in watching someone play the game who’s seen the show first. I know of one other TH-camr/reactor who plans on playing the first game after the season ends.
I guess it depends on if you’d like to be entirely focused on playing the game or enjoying what the game has to offer while interacting with fans at the same time. Not sure you could go wrong with either.

It sounds like you've played the games as you commented about the mall which is in the dlc. And this is still part of the first game. They've already announced season 2. You should (or at least id hope you'd have the intelligence) to understand that they're probably not gonna kill the main character Joel off pretty early into the first game .

@@SlanglieBeatz In Episode 2 when Joel, Tess and Ellie are walking, it's mentioned that Ellie went inside the mall in the QZ. Tess asks her if she went in by herself and Ellie hesitates... then eventually says yes. I guessed back then that she went with Riley (since in Episode 1, Marlene mentions a Riley, which seemed like Ellie and Riley were close). So to me, that was where she lost Riley, so the flashback showing what happened at the mall would make sense since the show tends to explain things that they mention in previous episodes

Great episode with a lot of character depth for Ellie.
If you pay attention, the episode shows you exactly how the story with Ellie and Riley ends. They don't have to show that explicitly.
Riley played Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka (last game).
Both were Lovers in the game.
Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley.
I think it's clear she stabbed her.
That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him.
Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her.
At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options.
Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible.
The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her.
Also, we've learned that Ellie's first impulse is to leave when she feels pushed away or is pushed away, but she keeps coming back. This is one parallel between Joel and Riley. Another parallel is, both are Ellie's protectors. And don't forget Ellie's greatest fear of ending up alone. In the end, she will try everything possible to save Joel, which she was not able to do with Riley.
Ellie has lost Riley and Sam to the fungus. She is the cure. She wants her survival to have value.
Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is not nice, he is manipulative. This can be seen in Riley who is allowed to supervise the sewage work. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. These also kill civilians, as we saw in Episode 1 on Tess when one of these bombs exploded, killing two teenagers. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die.
The series in general is all about the number 2.

I'm a little disappointed of this one, because of the removal of the arcade scene from the game, one of the most iconic and meaningful scenes that showed Ellie's vivid imagination (if you're curious: /watch?v=a8XgByLIe9w), which is very much a precursor to another very iconic scene in Part 2. With all the Left Behind references in the previous episodes I also kinda expected to see Ellie having to shoot Riley, but instead they just ended it pretty much like the DLC did, leaving the rest up to imagination.
Either way, it was Ellie's first love, her first kiss, her first loss, and her first kill. It also showed that she is suffering from survivors guilt, so she definitely did not want to leave Joel to die alone there. Joel squeezing down on her hand also kinda solidified their relationship that they started to properly accept after Jackson.
I liked them playing together cause you got to see them playing mortal Kombat together Which you did not see on the dlc
Seeing episode 7 for the first time, I was tearful and glad to have had some background behind Ellie and meeting Riley. But I will say that it is my least favorite episode to rewatch.

It's the worst episode of the series so far. Not that it doesn't have necessary elements to further develop Ellie's character, but the way it was executed, monopolizing the entire episode over the Joel arc, basically highjacking it I might even say, was unwise and not consistent with the quality of previous episodes. That's my personal opinion though, you might disagree and that's fine. But for me, it was like hitting a wall after being so hyped with how the previous episode ended. I hope the following episode(s?) will bring back the same level of quality or interesting/relevant arcs.
It's straight from the game and there is plenty of time to finish the story, so I think you're completely wrong.
The Ellie character is more and more of a 20 year old criminal than a 14 year old. Less interesting that way she's just another Tess. That's the script, imho. Regardless, this episode I lost a lot of the immersion because every couple minutes something unbelieveable happens. Arcade games, carousels, escalators, electrical systems throughout a mall all working without maintenance for 20 years? nah. In episode 3 Bill had to bust ass to keep things running.
Perhaps if you're looking for a 100% accurate scenario, movies and TV series aren't the best thing to be watching
