The lines where Joel talks about failing in his sleep and “I have dreams and when I wake up I feel I’ve lost something” was all Pedro! It was said in the podcast that he came up with and added that bit in. I also read an interview where the director for this episode talked about how dedicated he was in filming that scene. She said he was crying like every take, even the ones where the cameras were on the other actor and not him. He apparently gave literally everything he had
As a long time fan of the games, this episode is what forever sold me on the show adaptation and cemented Bella Ramsey's performance as Ellie. The scene between Ellie and Joel where they have their first fight and truly open up to each other is just masterful, and such a tear jerker every time.
I had trouble having played both 1 & 2 numerous times that Bella could be Ellie as wonderfully portrayed by Ashley until the ending of this episode. Both are Ellie but in different mediums
I love the game and the show and I think the show generally handles these big scenes better *but*, I have to say that the scene you're referring to is one of the few where I feel like it's better in the game. Still great, mind you. But that's just my preference.
Pedro's acting during the emotional scene with Tommy was some of the best acting I've seen. Cut strait to the heart. When he said "I'm failing in my sleep & All I do is fail her" Totally broke me.

And having a child is just another mouth to feed. They sure are selfish, mindless, and primal instinct driven, they might as well be infected...
Joel was fundamentally broken when Sarah died, but he kept on existing for Tommy, and later for Tess. When Tommy left and Tess died, he would have shut down almost completely - but Ellie was there to give him a reason to go on. The more time they've had together, the more he's opened up to her, the more terrified he's been of losing her and it being his fault. He was counting on finding Tommy and having someone he could rely on to help protect her - instead, he finds that Tommy has a whole new life, and a future to look forward to that doesn't include him, so he turns cold towards Tommy because he was so looking forward to having his brother back that it almost seems like this Tommy is a stranger. I think when Tommy brought the boots Joel was at his lowest point, desperately wondering how he was going to go on and keep Ellie safe all by himself... so he finally opened up and let his brother see how fundamentally broken he was inside. I also think hearing Sarah's name after so long is why he lashed out at Ellie, along with the idea that he needed to give her a reason to hate him so she would go with Tommy. But I also believe that Ellie choosing him without a single doubt helped heal something inside of Joel, which is why he taught her how to shoot and why their relationship was so much better... right up until the end. 😢

Regarding Joel removing the broken bat, in this situation, he needed to mount/escape on a horse. So while it's important in a typical situation to not remove whatever's impaling you to prevent bleeding out, he likely opted to remove it bc it might be worse for him to have a long, sharp object still rattling around in his organs that could cause further damage when he's on horseback and not just standing upright. Plus Joel was having an adrenaline rush from fighting, so he likely couldn't feel how deep the bat was and didn't realize until he took it out. Also, you're told by medical professionals to not remove whatever's impaling you in order to allow more time for help to arrive. But this is during an apocalypse with no active hospitals or a way to quickly reach anyone. Tommy is 5 days away while the Fireflies' hospital/First aid supplies were just removed from the university building. So since he can't wait around for help, Joel's priority shouldn't be to keep the bat in his body if it's only impeding his current mobility when he needs to get him and Ellie away from the raiders.
Joel didn't want to take her at first precisely because she reminders him of Sarah. He was afraid of getting attached, and now he's deathly afraid of watching her die. That's why he was getting those panic attacks. It's the idea of failing to protect her that's getting to him.

@kaley1368 - no, it is not. When Joel is lying to Ellie at the end... all we can hear from this reation is "that is so selfish, so fcked up". Not even close. And it tells a lot about the person who thinks like that, and missing a larger picture and whole emotional story, deep background of how those two characters has grown and reacted with each other - as the story progressed, and how he will do anything possible to protect the Ellie at the end (due to his background, what happened to his family and so on). Yeah, personally? I get it, and I would do exactly the same as Joel.
Great start to the episode meeting Marlon and Florence AND we didn't have to suffer saying goodbye to them. The way Joel yelled out to Tommy. There were so many different emotions wrapped up in it. All the communication between all of them was more riveting than any action sequence so far. What needed to be said to each other and what needed to be heard. Profound. See you for the next episode. Take care, H & K
Yeah, and it is interesting to see some of the reactions. When Joel is lying to Ellie at the end... all we can hear from this is "that is so selfish, so fcked up". Not even close. And it tells a lot about the person who thinks like that.
The actor who plays the husband of the couple in the first scene I mostly remember from Wind River. One of Taylor Sheridan's Frontier trilogy movies. The other two movies in the trilogy are Hell Or High Water and Sicario!
I've been working 60+ hour weeks since April, so I decided to take today off and have a mini vacation. . . . I woke up feeling like shit today, which is a good summary of my life so far.
I know people say ‘don’t take it out’ when Joel gets stabbed by that wooden bat, and it’s true in normal circumstances that’s what your supposed to do. Keep it in until you can get first aid. However in this situation, Joel did the smart thing, because he has to quickly escape on a horse which will throw him around and with a broken jagged bat inside him all of that moving around would rip his insides apart which would kill him way quicker. In Joel’s mind even though he’ll bleed out, he’s more likely to stay alive and conscious enough by taking it out to make sure Ellie gets out of that situation safely without being left on her own.
I love how feral they seem compared to the settled towns people at 12:30 😂😂😂 I knew she was preggers immediately by the way that jacket sat against her tummy❤ You two are like everyone else that's reacted to this show...so traumatized that something bad is about to happen 20:26 😂❤❤ I just love how Joel literally cannot be away from Ellie at this point. Played the game multiple times, watched it multiple times, seen this show a couple of times - and seeing your reactions STILL gets to me. Really enjoy watching you experience this story!
Stopped by to say that out of all the LOU reaction videos I've watched - and there are many - I've enjoyed yours the most. You're both authentic, thoughtful, and entertaining. Keep it up!
Just as Henry's death was shown here at the beginning, so it was shown in the game. There was no funeral. There was the shot, then the long black screen and then directly a time jump to the dam. When Joel had his first panic attack, he immediately infected Ellie with it. Her greatest fear of ending alone hit her hard at that moment. That was also panic. Mercy has already shown us in episode 1 that dogs can smell the fungus. The dog here has noticed that something is wrong with Ellie, but he has also noticed that there is no danger from her. Something Fedra's detectors can't detect. They only know black (red) and white (green), just like Fedra is. And of course, Ellie is infected, otherwise the detector would not have shown red. Immunity does not mean that you are not infected, that you do not carry the fungus. Imagine how many immunes have been killed by detectors. The boy in episode 1 could have been immune. A combination of detektor and dog would probably be ideal. Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series. Maria is no bullshit. And she's right that Tommy followed Joel. This was already established in episode 1. The conversation about love that Tommy, Sarah and Joel had in the kitchen says a lot about their dynamics. Joel: "he's dependent on me" Joel determines how long they work. When he says something, Tommy does it. That's Tommy's character. He also married Maria, a dominant woman. Tommy, rifle in his hand, asked Joel what to do when the infected grandma came running towards them in episode 1. Tommy wanted to take the couple with the baby in the car. Joel told him to keep going and Tommy did. Of these two brothers, Tommy is humanly the better one, but submissive. Interesting is the fact in episode 4 that the question Ellie asked in the car was only fully answered by Joel about his brother in the stairwell. Tommy always wanted to be a hero and do good. That's why he joined the Army at the age of 18, that's why he was on the road with Joel afterwards and later joined the Fireflys. Why did Joel have to get Tommy out of jail in episode 1? Because Tommy defended a woman who was attacked. Joel told Ellie in the stairwell that he was on both sides with Tess and Tommy. So also on the bad. So Tommy didn't just leave Joel for the Fireflys because Marlene recruited him, but because nothing good came out of robbing and killing innocent people. Joel portrays Tommy all the time as if Tommy needs him. He wouldn't get along without him. In fact, Tommy knows exactly what he wants and where he can't find it. So the Army, Joel and the Fireflys also disappointed him. He didn't do any good with them either. Joel always says Tommy needs him. In fact, Joel seems to need him more than the other way around. Tommy wanted to be a hero and do good. Now in Jackson he can do good. However, one rule was a strict ban on radio to the outside world to protect all 300 people who live there, including children. So in how far is it wrong what Tommy does? That Joel feels responsible for him out of his completely shifted, negative view of the world is Joel's problem and not Tommy's. Because Joel's view doesn't have much to do with reality. He sees things as he needs them in order to continue living. Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. But he does not see this so clearly at the time and still tries to prevent the inevitable. Joel just wanted to talk to the family at the dinner table. This excluded Maria, but Ellie was allowed to remain seated. Subconsciously, Ellie was already part of his family. Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was "STILL gross". That was a callback to the DLC "Left Behind" Elli's flashback episode. This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina (Ellie yelled at her as she dined), properly Jessie (cinema), Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheeps, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic. The campfire scene was not in the game, but was originally supposed to be included. So far, only a concept art was left in the bonus material of the game. I think the scene would have been important in the game because it underlines once again that both Marlene and Joel are absolutly sure that it is possible to produce a cure. Druckman said he can now finally show more through the series than was possible in the game. Edit: And of course it only makes sense to leave the stick in the body if there are also doctors. This is an apocalypse, it's not easy to find doctors. You don't leave anything stuck in your body, but pull it out and hope for the best. Otherwise, you will die of blood poisoning. Also, I don't think Joel could have gotten on the horse or ridden it.
Yeah Joel getting stabbed and then he takes the the part of the bat out of his body is the only way he could climb up on that horse because he could flex his body in that spot where the hole is if that stick of the bat was still there he wouldn't be able to climb up on the horse it would have got caught on the horse seat thing that they sit on and it would still get infected from whatever's on the end of that broken bat that went into his body
"Just as Henry's death was shown here at the beginning, so it was shown in the game. There was no funeral." I don't know if there was an official "funeral" ceremony in the game but they did bury Henry and Sam. When you get to the dam you can find a grave of a small child and Ellie says that she forgot to leave the robot toy on Sam's grave. So Joel and Ellie did bury Henry and Sam.
8:14 Left side of the Bridge, South you can see the camera crew. 12:05 The Brothers Miller. I want so badly to see a video game/show featuring the time of Joel & Tommy after Sarah's Murder and ending at when they did the 20 time jump. 12:33 Tara from True Blood. 13:22 Easy to miss but in this moment Joel is including Ellie as "family". Makes me warm inside when months ago he stated very clearly: "... no you are cargo." 17:56 Really sad. Kevin was only 3 when he died and just 2 days after Sarah"s Murder.
Man you guys are hilarious 😂 the first half of this one was such a good change of pace from the last couple eps. It really was an acting masterclass from pedro and bella wasn’t it. Loved the reaction guys! You guys are the best. I Cant wait to see your reaction to left behind!
The acting in this Ep was so damn good!!! Joel being so vulnerable with Tommy broke me 😢 Great reaction from y’all like always!! Did y’all really watch the next Ep?! Lol That was funny.
I'm late to this one, but what I love most here is that we see the moment Joel admitted to himself that Ellie was family instead of cargo. Circumstance threw them together, which wasn't either of their choice, but here when Joel stays to give her a choice, he CHOSE her, and she CHOSE him. No pressures, no immediate threat, just chosen family. This falls right in line with the (full accurate) saying: "Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." Which means (contrary to the implication of the shortened version we all have heard) means, the family we choose is a more powerful bond than the family we were simply born from. (Mind you we also can choose that love for our blood relatives too, and often do, but not everybody has that option or just can't)
Also, the song that plays at the end of this episode is a cover of the song that plays at the end of episode 1! And ever cooler, it is being sung by Craig Mazin’s daughter. He’s the director of the show :)
Just found your channel and you are both so fun to watch. Binged all of your Last of Us videos and cant wait to see you react to the rest of the series.
Ive had many panic attacks. He acted it pretty well. My panic attacks can be a lot more…panicky and gasping for air, but that’s just my own experiences
The way they do the end fight in this episode was amazing, because if they went by how in went down in the game it just would of been pretty hard to pull of both physically and the believability of it but I just noticed Joel even after being stabbed still helps Elle up on the horse as they're escaping . Both of your reactions were so great, I can tell you two are really starting to care about Joel and Elle
The show has a great novella or short story structure if you will. Not that it is short or moves too quickly, but that it uses every word and scene in an economical way to convey character and plot.
Elle’s face and yelp is the most visceral and raw reaction compared to the over acted reaction that lesser actors do when they see something that traumatic in front of them
"outfit change andnlets watch the next one....immediately" I overstand. Lol. I cant imagine ppl that were and hadnt played the game, and needed to wait a week before they could find out what happens next.
I love how they established in episode 1 with Mercy that dogs can definitely tell, so now we know that Ellie is fundamentally different than other infected.
Wooow. This is wild. Kiss, you look just like a girl from my hometown 😳 Except she had brown hair. But the same smile, eyes and nose 😲 Sadly she passed away in 2019. Anyway, i love watching you guys. Love your energy Kiss. You're amazing 😁
Tess DIED because they went to go find him, i wish this was made clear to tommy...and it may have been while he was telling the whole story off camera, but as the audience i feel we really needed to see tommy's reaction to that fact
18:25 ironically, if the show was really going for realism, the lady probably would have needed to cut Ellie’s hair short due to matting. Think about it, she hasn’t showered in months much less washed her hair. Honestly, I don’t think she even had a brush or comb to run through it
The maturity and sensibilities of these two young women are evident compared to Ellie, but there is a strong connection and association with the character. You can feel it in how much they want Joel to love Ellie. This episode really got to them and I think it’s wonderful. But with the monumental challenges Ellie faces from here, I’m concerned how difficult this will get for Haylo and Kiss!
For the reason the dog didn’t attack Ellie. I think it can only detect an active infection. It looks confused for a moment, but then when it gets closer it seems to think she smells more human than plant. Assuming that’s how they train the dog. Almost like the plant in Ellie started growing and then decided Ellie was already a plant, so it just stopped, showed off by those web like lines coming out of her bite. Only reason I can think of. But it did lead me to believe the machines that FEDRA use detect infection must just read the presence of the cordo in the blood stream. They don’t really seem to give a read out when you see them, just light, so they don’t seem to say how badly you’re infected or give any indication of how much time a person has. Kind of a smart way for the show to illustrate a world where they seem to have made an idiot proof test. Just not a thorough one. 😂😂😂. Hope you both are doing well!
Lmao as a women you should know those menstrual cups are an invention from like the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier. I laughed so hard when she said “they had those in 2003”. Edit: They were patented in 1937.
@HayloAndKiss yeh. Lol. In the game, you find voice recordings saying what happened and informing of where the Firefly's were headed. When you reach the cages, a final recorder is there, and it mentions more about the monkeys and I believe the scientist killed himself. Ellie and Joel makes a mention of being glad they didn't mess with the monkeys earlier when they saw them. Then rest of the section gets really dramatic and the way Joel gets impaled is much more intense. I would recommend taking a look at it after you finish watching the series. It hits a bit more emotionally.
Yes, the monkeys are infected in the game and they bite one of the scientists, but that's it. There's no "ordeal". You find that scientist's body in his office - he stayed behind when the rest of the Fireflies left for Seattle because he knew he couldn't go with them.
@jhornacek been a while since I've played. Might be mixing up a part of the game, or a portion with Part 2, which I won't get into details about for spoiler reasons. I do remember the exit being much more dramatic.
@@JigInsane Thanks for not spoiling TLOU2, I haven't played that yet. In the game you find a recording where the scientist talks about being told to kill all the infected monkeys, but he decides to let them free because in his opinion they deserve to be free. But one of them bites him. That scientist is the body Joel and Ellie find in the final room of the university (just before the Hunters attack). He looks like a dead human body, not Infected, so it appears as if he killed himself. He leaves a recorder where he speaks his final words saying "I'm dead, or I soon will be" so he knows he's infected and has no hope.
I don't wanna simp, but yeah! They're the most gorgeous women in You-frickin-Tube reacting/commenting to The Last of Us right now. I do love the sibling chemistry, it's actually pretty funny. Reminds me of my sister. Great work again,; can't wait for the next vid.

Something about the way Joel shouts "Tommy!!" when he sees his brother really gets me
It's the first (?) time since the 2003 section that we see Joel smile.
This show, is some of the best writing and acting I’ve seen in years! So high quality
Yeah, and it is interesting to see some of the reactions.

Best new reaction channel on youtube easily
Pedro was phenomenal in this episode. #Emmy
The actor who plays the husband of the couple in the first scene I mostly remember from Wind River. One of Taylor Sheridan's Frontier trilogy movies. The other two movies in the trilogy are Hell Or High Water and Sicario!
I knew being ill and having to have the day off work would have a positive outcome. Always a good day when you two upload a video! 😊
Feel better soon!
I've been working 60+ hour weeks since April, so I decided to take today off and have a mini vacation.
. . . I woke up feeling like shit today, which is a good summary of my life so far.
This scene in the game man. “Joel, come on you gotta get up! You gotta tell me what to do!!” 😭
I know people say ‘don’t take it out’ when Joel gets stabbed by that wooden bat, and it’s true in normal circumstances that’s what your supposed to do.
I love how feral they seem compared to the settled towns people at 12:30 😂😂😂
I knew she was preggers immediately by the way that jacket sat against her tummy❤
You two are like everyone else that's reacted to this show...so traumatized that something bad is about to happen 20:26 😂❤❤
I just love how Joel literally cannot be away from Ellie at this point. He tried....but he already loves her too much! 24:28
You girls don’t know how long I have waited for this reaction video to drop in my feed. Ever since I found you girls reaction channel my Fridays get even better, and I don’t know why but I feel like I waited decades for every TLOU reaction video. Either way it’s so nice to see Joel & Ellie bonding even closer after this episode; best of luck Haylo and Kiss and I’ll be waiting another decade for next reaction video.
Played the game multiple times, watched it multiple times, seen this show a couple of times - and seeing your reactions STILL gets to me. Really enjoy watching you experience this story!
Tag Team, back again! 🥳🤜🏼🤛🏼
“The contractorrrrr.”
Fantastic as always. Keep ‘em coming.
The only people who can betray us are the one we trust."
Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series. Maria is no bullshit.
And she's right that Tommy followed Joel. This was already established in
episode 1. The conversation about love that Tommy, Sarah and Joel had in the kitchen says a lot about their dynamics.
Joel: "he's dependent on me"
Joel determines how long they work.
Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon."
This sentence says so much.
There was no funeral."
I don't know if there was an official "funeral" ceremony in the game but they did bury Henry and Sam.
LOL You guys said F that were not waiting until next week for the next one. Glad you have your tissues now.
"This looks like Wyoming."
FUN FACT: It's Canada. All season long. :)
I don't even know what to say anymore. Your reactions are so great. Thanks to my new favorite series, I've discovered new favorite reactors
I think Joel changes his mind after that flashback of Sarah...because he knew Sarah would have been ashamed of him leaving Elle.
Just found your channel and you are both so fun to watch. Binged all of your Last of Us videos and cant wait to see you react to the rest of the series.
You are both amazing and I love that you have a sense of humor! Thank you, I can't wait for the next episode! Greetings from Munich, Germany!
Ive had many panic attacks. He acted it pretty well. My panic attacks can be a lot more…panicky and gasping for air, but that’s just my own experiences
You love when you start gagging. It’s hilarious. 😂😂😂
I love your reactions, you 2 are some of the most entertaining to watch! Don’t stop for a long time please!
So glad I found this channel. You both do such a great job, a pleasure to watch. All the way from Australia :)
The show has a great novella or short story structure if you will. Not that it is short or moves too quickly, but that it uses every word and scene in an economical way to convey character and plot.
Poor Hayley! Every time she's jumpscared it's b/c a quarter second earlier Kiss grabbed her or screamed 😄
love you guys! Subscribed!
All aboard the rollercoaster! Great reaction, ladies. Tough tough tough. And soooo emotional
Subtle message during the decisions on who would take Ellie, is that the movie playing is called The Goodbye Girl.
I love how they established in episode 1 with Mercy that dogs can definitely tell, so now we know that Ellie is fundamentally different than other infected.
Just 3 Episodes left! All the Feels in this episode
You two are amazing! Can’t wait to see the last 3 episodes!!
Graham Greene is our national treasure! He was in the twilight series
When Joel thought he saw his daughter… I cried big time …twice
Crying 😢 pedro smashed this... Bella to that scene in the bedroom
Remember, "asshole" was the first word Ellie ever said to Joel in episode 1.
Wooow. This is wild. Kiss, you look just like a girl from my hometown 😳 Except she had brown hair. But the same smile, eyes and nose 😲 Sadly she passed away in 2019. Anyway, i love watching you guys. Love your energy Kiss. You're amazing 😁
You guys are fun to watch. Looking forward to more reactions.
Damn your reactions were good. Your observations were spot on.
Kiss cracks me up every time she throws her fists up to fight.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Must have seen half a dozen reactions to the show so far and this is the first time someone immediately picked up on Joel's panic attack. :)
Every episode makes you cry 😢
You guys re so sweet! Love your reactions and the (failed) effort no to cry. LOL
This show is so insanely well made.
Tess DIED because they went to go find him, i wish this was made clear to tommy...and it may have been while he was telling the whole story off camera, but as the audience i feel we really needed to see tommy's reaction to that fact
Agreed
"he loves he so much"
Funny thing, in the game the monkeys ARE infected. They aren't controlled by the cordiceps, but can spread the infection.
18:25 ironically, if the show was really going for realism, the lady probably would have needed to cut Ellie’s hair short due to matting. Think about it, she hasn’t showered in months much less washed her hair. Honestly, I don’t think she even had a brush or comb to run through it
hoping for the day you girls drop two videos a day 😢😂😂 too much ik but you're awesome ❤
You guys have the best reactions. 🥰
“Monkeys are not a good thing” 😂 that killed me
The maturity and sensibilities of these two young women are evident compared to Ellie, but there is a strong connection and association with the character. You can feel it in how much they want Joel to love Ellie. This episode really got to them and I think it’s wonderful. But with the monumental challenges Ellie faces from here, I’m concerned how difficult this will get for Haylo and Kiss!
Was waiting for the reaction 🙌🙌
Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but there's a little Easter Egg in this episode about the Last of Us 2 video game...
"say what again, i double dog dare you" lol
You called the panic attack before it happened.
I wonder if she’s suffered from them too! 😕
Edit: They were patented in 1937.
loving the heartbreak
Damn another banger... can't wait for next episode!
lost it with the outfit change to watch the next one
i love u, im learnig english with yours videos, and others, but i love u
Pedro and bella are tlou.. no one can play joel and ellie as good
I have enjoyed your videos.. such a great show
Love you guys videos
Yall right about the monkeys. In the game they are infected and bit one of the scientist/firefly's and created an ordeal.
NO WAY! Wait that's really disturbing 😂
Might be the best Ellie & Joel become friends episode
Joel was dead, till ellie said no,! ❤
"Bery nice." -Borat.
10:54. That was clever!😆
Jackson came really quick in the show but wow... It looks fkn amazing 😮 but ooos.. off we go again 😂😂 i love tlou lol
i need more of yalls reactions. yall got anything else planned?
Arcane following The Last Of Us! Then we'll see what the Patreon folk vote on after that 😊
@@HayloAndKiss ooohh arcane is fire. good choice!
I love to see your reactions 🤗
