One of my favorite combos from back in the days of mana burn was the Angel's Trumpet + Crawlspace, but add in Varchild's War Riders and that's just icing! And if you like sprinkles, Lost Order of Jarkeld.

There is a section in the rules, 601.1a that states " “Playing a card” means playing that card as a land or casting that card as a spell, whichever is appropriate ". So for creatures, "play" is synonymous with "cast".

All this may affect drawing the card in question in time to still somehow know your library to pretty far depths...(Although sometimes people loved making giant libraries, though they still allowed 4 of the same-named card.) So, then, the 3rd option you mentioned, Unexpected Absence, it would FINALLY work great for whatever the black card was from Ice Age where you have to name a card and pray its the 7th card down from the top of your library. Back then, there might have been some "get-" or "arrange your cards thus n such", etc cards that also didnt force you to shuffle after. There wad Aladdin's Lamp if you happened to have it. More recently, the Scry ability could work, but not much besides "pay x " would go far enough down. Idk if anythig older saw that far down, if you recall Urza's Spectacles let u look at the top 4 and replace them without manipulation. Anyway, i need to look the card up so i can make a shorter reply that includes the name. Idk if it was even that amazing, but i know the chances of guessing 7 down was pretty tight...
Do you have a list somewhere with all these cards from this video series. I always try to get older unique cards and a few reserved cards into every deck I build and often read the reserved list because of that. Would be great to have a list to look at sometimes for inspiration for other interesting cards too.

I love widespread panic. It's sneaky good in that way that no one thinks it's a big deal until it happens to them 2 or 3 times. I run it in Zedruu, and just hand it off to someone cause it doesn't matter who the controller is
Uphill Battle needs to keep that weird wording because it technically cares about the owner of the spell rather than the controller of the creature. If you somehow gain control of their creature spell, it’ll enter tapped, and any creatures that aren’t played (tokens, cheated, etc.) will enter untapped.
LOL Uphill Battle with Smoke can get pretty funny in my Mogis deck. I like how Phasing gets broken as soon as you can decide when you activate the Phasing :P
Unexpectedly absent was a favorite of mine for awhile. I like the flexibilty of it, espcially since it can also be used to save something of your own for x=0
I think the "have an opponent make a 1/1 token" thing is to make it so your opponent owns the tokens. Before the errata and a few sets of rules ago, you used to own the tokens made by permanents you controlled, and could steal them with a card like Brand or Homeward Path. This was really good with the "hunted" cycle from ravnica.
Another thing worth noting about phasing a creature out is that since phasing doesnt technically have the creature leaving the battlefield, any counters on it will still be there when the creature phases in. Vanishing is an ALL STAR in my ramos cascade deck.
so the great thing about Viashino Heretic is the fact that the destroy effect is in a separate sentence from the damage effect. you can just target someone's colossus every turn and hit them for 10 or 11 repeatedly

I just got vanishing for my Braids, Conjurer Adept deck. I get the benefit, you don't! Viashino Heretic and Liquimetal Coating is a great combo. Or use Myr Landshaper to get rid of those pesky lands.
Important note with unexpectedly absent, commanders no longer get tucked, or sent to library. Updated rules are if it changes zones from the battlefield you can send it to command zone. Still a good answer for everything else

I know plenty of people who play 3-4 Mirage fetches in their 3-color (or even 2-color!) decks because they already have shocks from standard but don't have the money for Onslaught/Zendikar fetches. A turn 2 Tsabo's web could EASILY cause someone with one tapped Mirage fetch in plan and another in hand to decide that they'd rather go and find something else to do rather than play out the rest of the game. I wouldn't say "don't play Tsabo's Web" just because of that, but it's very important to understand that it can knock certain budget decks out of the game until someone else is kind enough to remove it for them.

I tend to spend a lot of time on Gatherer when researching cards for decks.

That also isn't saying target opponent, which is important as well.
I highly recommend Thran Turbine for any deck that has activated abilities, or if you have a bunch of signets. It's almost not really a sol ring haha
