Question. My understanding is that the nd filters must be mounted in the camera when the drone is off to prevent damage to the gimbal. Your thoughts appreciated.
Just bought a mini 2 as I'm not a pro.. great video and instruction. Watching most of your content. Don't have a pro editing software yet (using iMovie) but will get to LUTS soon. Cheers
Thanks for the straightforward tips. My go to filter is nd16, but you're right...I should actually check before flying. I'm too used to having the variable aperture on my Mavic 2 which gives more flexibility.
Perfect video on using the ND filters, bought them over a week ago and the difference night and day but seeing how you choose the right filter really helped. One thing would be great to see, how you use the polarised filters in the Freewell range - and really love watching your channel, clear, precise and really to the point without all the boring stuff 👌
I purchased my mini 2 a week or so before I stumbled upon your channel. Been subbed for a while and cant say how much your videos have helped! Thanks Matt!
Hi Matthew. I'm loving the Freewell all day filters; however, I'm noticing I'm getting a lot of vignette when filmjng cinematic footage. Any advice how to avoid this? Flying at 30fps with 1/60 shutter speed. Always enjoying your videos! Keep them coming!
There is an easier way... use an ND filter app. Hold your drone up, bare, aimed at the scene and find the shutter speed for the correct exposure. Dial that shutter speed into an ND filter app, and tell the app your desired shutter speed (eg. 1/50th) and it will tell you what ND filter to use. Benefits are not handling filters needlessly, or chance of dropping them etc. The Nisi Filter app from the usual app stores seems to work for me.
Hi Mattheww, I purchased your LUTS back in 2021 and I have only just got around to loading them up! I clicked on the links of how to set them up in Premier Pro and its seems to be trying to take me to Vimeo but its saying the video doesn't exist? Is there a video available explaining how to load them up and use them for someone new to Premiere Pro? Cheers Paul
The ND filters you linked to are in a set of 4 and in a set of two, however the ones you are showing in a nice case are a set of 8. Are these different from what you linked? Thanks 👍
Hey , great video, but what about all these comments that this nd filters are not good anymore for the dji mini 2 . I read comments where people are saying that the gimbal is not working when the filter is on. What do you say ?
Hello! I have the same filter and drone and i've been noticing some vignetting in the bottom corners of my shots.. Is there a reason for this to be happening?... Thanks!!

Hi, I’ve been looking at Amazon for the 8 set, can’t find it. All I can find is a bundle of 4+2 . Bundle with long exposure kit… So ND 4,8,16,CPL + ND 1000, ND 2000 That’s all I can find, you got 8 pack, this isn’t available anymore ? Good video mate … Thanks ! 🎩
I have watched this and the white balance hack video, should the ND filter be applied before setting white Balance? Thank you for all the information you provide, you have been a great help to a new pilot
This was a fantastic video - I've got a quick question though... I've started shooting in manual, 30fps with 1/60 shutter speed; however, in the evening I'm finding everything too dark, regardless of what filter I'm using. My question is, do you always fly to the 180 rule, or only if you're after motion blur? Trying to leave ISO at 100 if I can. Thanks in advance.
I have trouble understanding what you said at the beginning about the Mm setting you like to keep it on minus …. What was the number? Because I read the mm number as -0.7 but sounded like you said a different number. Sorry trying to learn about the filters and setting from the man who knows best! Hi Matthew. I tried to click the link for the drone LUTs used in the video for the mini 2 (that will not record in Log) but the link is giving me an error. Is there another updated link? Where can I purchase them? Most LUTs I tried don't work because they assumed I shot in log or some other flat profile mode.
Recent subscriber! Great and helpful content! !! Are you able to keep the ND filters on when putting the gimble cover on? I am not able to with Sunnyfire ND filters. The gimble cover puts pressure on the ND filter and cause the fimble to be stresed. I don't want to stress it by forcing it closed so I have never done it.
I tried the Skyreet ND filters on my Mini 2, but all they did was upset the gimbal and it wouldn't level properly. With no filter attached the gimbal operates normally as it should. What is going on??
Hi Mathew, quick question unrelated to this particular video - sorry, I can’t seem to find any way to submit a general question on TH-cam - perhaps there is but I’m quite new to TH-cam. I was wondering if you could do a video on the flight data log files that are saved on my iPhone whenever I fly my mini 2. I have some basic understanding of some of the various files but there are so many, I’m not 100% sure what they all mean. Do I need to keep them or can they be deleted to increase my phones available storage? Really enjoying your channel. Thank you
In an earlier video two months before this one you’re using PGY Tech ND filters (in fact you seem to be using those in THIS video because those start at ND8 and not ND4 like the eight pack from FreeWell). The PGY Tech filter set are ALL polarized. Are the FreeWell filters that much better? How often do you use ND4.
Helpful video! Rather than trial and error, IMO it's better to just do a bit of math. For instance, if the proper exposure with no filter is 1/500 s and you want 1/60, that's about 3 f-stops (3 doublings). Then 2 times 2 times 2 is 8 (2 to the third power), so you want and ND 8 filter. If it was originally 1/1000 s, that would be about 4 f-stops, 2^4 = 16, so an ND 16. Etc.
Even simpler math: 500 ➗️ 60 = 8.33 so you need roughly ND 8. Shutter speed to get proper exposure ➗️ desired shutter speed = ND filter Saw this in another comment on TH-cam somewhere and found it super helpful!
Great content as usual Matthew, as a newbie dronie with a mini 2 I've been watching your videos for hints and tips and of course being from Belfast I don't have problems with the accent!
I usually keep it on. If you pinch the gimbal with one hand and fit the ND with the other it tends to be ok, but if you really want to be safe then it makes sense to turn the drone off when switching. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video great tips ..A quick question for you when putting a ND/PL filter on the Lens of the drone do the white marked lines on the filters need to be lined up?
Ok Matthew, I’ve just bought a used mini 2 for a great price and the kit includes an 8 pack of ND upto 16nd and the rest are nd/cpl up as far as 64 plus it includes 2 other lens covers - a 1000 and a 2000 which I kind of understand but my main question with all of this is that I only have an iPad Pro at the moment so I’m pretty certain that won’t allow me to have decent editing software added plus LUTS which are confusing me a little but look like templates to me? Can I get anywhere close with an iPad Pro in terms of colour grading and adding decent music in “post” I need to learn the lingo too …. Help me please people Thanks in advance.
Happy to help! An iPad Pro can certainly run decent editing software such as Premiere Rush or LumaFusion. LUTs put simply are "styles" you can add to your footage to give it certain looks. With an iPad Pro you can definitely create high-level video, in fact I would argue you can match footage edited on a standard computer.
@@TheDroneCreative thank you Matthew, how do I add the LUTS then? I thought I’d need a MacBook to be able to run premiere pro etc … also use my own music - I’m a total novice so need some advice. Am I limited with LumaFusion or premiere rush to their choice of music? Would you be able to do a video/photos and edit the footage on one of these apps? Are they free apps or paid for? It’s only a 64gb iPad Pro 10.5” (just checked) … love your videos. Hope you don’t forget about the mini 2, now the mini 3 is here of course. Thanks for your time. Martin
Matthew, so I have the exact Freewell filters you use on your video. They also have a dial on them as well. Can you explain their usage? I like you method of selecting the proper filter and find in my area it’s somewhere between the ND16 and ND32. I have left the dial at 12 o’clock for now, but looking for a more in-depth explanation of what for example, setting it at 9 o’clock would do.
Hi Mattheww, I really like your videos, thank you for all of them! I see that you also have the "rolling shutter" problems when strafeing sideways and it stutters a bit - doesn't that bother you? It drives me crazy and I have no idea what to do about it....
Do you think the Pgytech ND filters are still a good option? You commented on how well they were made with metal clips, water and oil resistant a couple of months ago. Was able to purchase a set of 4 for $52.00 CDN and received them yesterday. Thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thanks
Just based on Amazon reviews, which admittedly can be misleading, I see a lot more comments about random poor fit and gimbal issues with the Freewells, so I just ordered a set of Pgytech filters. We'll see!
Hi Mattheww I used an ND filter recently for the first time. It was a very sunny day, so I put an ND-32 but I forget to put the drone on Pro or manual and just left it on Auto. I was really surprised because the quality of the video and photos turned out be extremely good. What is your explanation?
Thank you. I’ve been enjoying and learning a lot from your video’s. Have you tried the polarized Freewell ND’s? I would think they are optimized at only one angle (90 deg from the sun). How do they work if the drone view angle is changing? Do you recommend the ND only or the hybrid ND/PL?
Hi there, I'm only back here to get the affiliate link for filters (hope you get some income from them), but have to comment on your method, which I was uncomfortable with when originally watching the video - because it seems to involve a lot of fiddling about with filters, which is a real pain (and I suspect you don't really do it in the field anyway). Another way is to be aware of the number of stops (ND4 -2 stops, 8-3stops, 16-4 stops etc.) Then just see what the shutter speed is without filters, and use your fingers to calculate the right one. So if shutter speed is good at 1/2000, one stop is 1/1000, 2 stops is 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60 is five stops, so you need an ND32)
I have a mini 2 with freewell all day pack, i'm trying the nd with polarizer and it says gimbal stuck when i fit it and turn on the drone, and no i dont want to fit it while the drone is on and gimbal is at work, anyone having these kinds of issues?
Great videos, thanks very much! Based on your recommendation I purchased a set of Freewells 8pack All Day set. I'd love to see a video that shows some scenarios for using the polarization, etc functions of some of the filters.
Thanks Mattheww for the review, I really doubt regarding which ND filters to pick! A month ago you were saying the PGYTECH were the ones! Now it’s the FREEWELL, although both of them existed back then. why this change of valuation? which one are really the top on the market?
You can't go wrong with either. A month ago I was using the Pgytech and getting great footage with them. Freewell recently sent me out a set of their own to try and they have also been fantastic. Thanks for watching!
The Pgytech ones are great, I used them for nearly all my shots you have seen so far. You won't be disappointed with either. Thanks for watching, really appreciate it.
Great stuff! Do you power the drone down when switching filters? I tried adjusting a mounted circular polariser filter with power on and my gimbal acted very strange for a bit, jittery and giving overload errors.
You recommended PGYTECH filters in another Video . So which ones are the best or is it case of the company thats sends you out free ones are the best ?
I have used both. I was using the PGYTECH filters and they where great, then FREEWELL sent me theirs to try and they have been fantastic too. So I recommend both - whichever is cheapest when it comes to buying are the ones I would go for.
I don't actually power the drone down. If you pinch the gimbal and hold it steady you can fit them without any issues. It takes a little practice though or as Roman mentioned the gimbal will fight you. They are a little niggly to put on, even at the best of times. Well worth it though!
You don't have to start with the filters off. I always start with what i had on before and work from there. Almost always need atleast a 16, likely 32. I cant remember the last time an 8 was good enough during the day time
Not easier to point your drone at the scene, see what shutter speed it chooses and then use a ND filter chart to see what you need to get to 1/60th for example?
You never said "wee" one time in this video! JK. We just watched Belfast recently and it was said around 6,709 times in the movie. But... it was from decades ago, so.. Anyway, great video! Thank you kindly, sir.
Great video thank you. I wasn't really in the market for filters because I didn't want to fiddle with learning how to use them. But with a tutorial like that I can't say no now. Also why didn't you link the 8 pack as in the video in the description?
Thank you - they really are a great addition. One of the few accessories I wouldn't be without. I didn't link the 8 pack because they don't appear to be available on Amazon at the minute. They are on the Freewell shop though!
180 degree rule for cinematic is not the only use of ND filters. If you use an ND filter and fly at a reasonably high altitude and use the 180 degree shutter rule then I don't see any significant 'cinematic motion blur' just a darker image. I use an ND filter to cut down light and use a lower shutter angle (say 45 degrees) rather than what would normally be required without ND filter ; example say a 10 degree shutter angle; avoiding a jerky/juddering/stuttering video. You can also increase the frame rate. Everyone says cinematic motion blur is normal; I disagree. If I'm a passenger in a vehicle and look out and focus on something (like a road sign) as it passes by - it's sharp and in focus; not blurred and unreadable. If you like it as presented in cinemas then use the 180 rule; if you like to be as a passenger looking at things as they pass by then don't use cinematic 180 degree rule.
I have the Skyreat 6 pack that has ND8-64, UV, and a CPL - seems like a good set too Mostly been using the CPL trying for sunsets lately - Would have loved to hear more about how/when to use UV and CPL th-cam.com/video/ZWvclH8CrJs/w-d-xo.html My latest from over the weekend shooting a river- Canadian smoke made my sunset turnout so grey you can barely tell there is a giant orange ball glowing. None of the filters/settings seemed to help :-(
Ha! No harm in posting your video too! Some of my most popular videos have been on subjects other TH-camrs have done - just with my own spin on them. Keep up the great work bud!

After your last video I bought the Pgytech filters via Amazon UK based on your recommendation. So now these cheaper ones are better?
The Pgytech ones are great, I used them for nearly all my shots you have seen so far. You won't be disappointed with either. Thanks for watching, really appreciate it.
Great stuff! Do you power the drone down when switching filters? I tried adjusting a mounted circular polariser filter with power on and my gimbal acted very strange for a bit, jittery and giving overload errors.
Never do anything to the gimbal/lens when the drone is powered on, always turn it off and then do whatever you want to do.

Did you power down the drone before you fitted the filter?
I don't actually power the drone down. If you pinch the gimbal and hold it steady you can fit them without any issues. It takes a little practice though or as Roman mentioned the gimbal will fight you. They are a little niggly to put on, even at the best of times. Well worth it though!
Excellent video. I’m no content creator, but this was well shot and informative. Thanks and I look forward to more good content like this!
Awesome Filter 👍🏻
You don't have to start with the filters off. I always start with what i had on before and work from there. Almost always need atleast a 16, likely 32. I cant remember the last time an 8 was good enough during the day time
Thanks 😊
Isn't it risky putting ND filters when the gimbal is turned on?
If you are gentle you should have no issues! Thanks for watching.
Gr8 vid bro! thanks
Appreciate it, thank you.
Not easier to point your drone at the scene, see what shutter speed it chooses and then use a ND filter chart to see what you need to get to 1/60th for example?
Love the channel. New drone flyer from NI, would love to fly with you
Thanks for the kind feedback. Nice to see a fellow NI viewer - whereabouts do you currently fly?
@@TheDroneCreative all over this island. I like videoing castles and churches mostly. I am just outside belfast
Great video. LUTs are not available!
You never said "wee" one time in this video! JK. We just watched Belfast recently and it was said around 6,709 times in the movie. But... it was from decades ago, so..
Anyway, great video! Thank you kindly, sir.
Appreciate your kind feedback, it means a lot! More than a wee bit 😂
So you’re not using pro mode. Are you on manual mode all the time when your flying?
Always on manual mode when flying for the best footage. Thanks for watching.
PGYTECH filters are a far superior. They fit perfectly on the mini 2, unlike Freewell filters in my opinion.

Yes please. How to use polarised filters…..
180 degree rule for cinematic is not the only use of ND filters.
If you use an ND filter and fly at a reasonably high altitude and use
the 180 degree shutter rule then I don't see any significant 'cinematic
motion blur' just a darker image. I use an ND filter to
cut down light and use a lower shutter angle (say 45 degrees) rather
than what would normally be required without ND filter ; example say a
10 degree shutter angle; avoiding a jerky/juddering/stuttering video.
You can also increase the frame rate.
Everyone says cinematic motion blur is normal; I disagree. If I'm a
passenger in a vehicle and look out and focus on something (like a road
sign) as it passes by - it's sharp and in focus; not blurred and
unreadable.
If you like it as presented in cinemas then use the 180 rule; if you
like to be as a passenger looking at things as they pass by then don't
use cinematic 180 degree rule.

👍👍👍😁
I like your way to set it. I am going to try it for my next video. Thank you my friend 😀🙏 - #RubenTaino
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching.
I have the Skyreat 6 pack that has ND8-64, UV, and a CPL - seems like a good set too
Mostly been using the CPL trying for sunsets lately - Would have loved to hear more about how/when to use UV and CPL
th-cam.com/video/ZWvclH8CrJs/w-d-xo.html
My latest from over the weekend shooting a river- Canadian smoke made my sunset turnout so grey you can barely tell there is a giant orange ball glowing. None of the filters/settings seemed to help :-(

Nice Preset that cost $30 that you can make for free!
Aren’t you scared to fly near seagulls ?
Sorry Matthew but you're a pain in the bum!
I have literally filmed this a few days ago and then I see this 😩
Ha! No harm in posting your video too! Some of my most popular videos have been on subjects other TH-camrs have done - just with my own spin on them. Keep up the great work bud!
@@TheDroneCreative haha it's cool man I'll post something else I have filmed and post that one in a few days :)
