Fun To Drive, But Is It Worth $55,000? (Honda Civic Hybrid 2023 Review)

  • We test the new Honda Civic E-HEV Hybrid LX and see whether this small car has successfully ascended to the premium ranks - given it costs $55,000.
The Honda Civic is one of our favourite small cars to drive - but its price has been hard to swallow in Australia since the new Civic launched with a VTi LX trim for $47,200 driveaway and a 1.5T turbo engine. Now, there’s a 2023 Civic Hybrid in town that is even more expensive - $55,000. Can this small car possibly be worth the spend? Chasing Cars contributor Dylan Campbell investigates.
The Honda Civic competes with the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato and other small cars.
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Honda Civic.

Haha reading commenters. It’s pricey yes and its built that way. Rather people want cheaper stuff and make it drive cheap. Such a weird thinking. Yes it is out of reach of many but so Is Audi A3 (base model with no auto cruise, rear traffic alerts - premium pack) vw golf, Mazda 3 Astina. It’s probable 2k - 3k premium. If u don’t have long waiting list in Australia just go for it. I have the petrol 1.5 , I will upgrade it to the hybrid when it comes out. It’s better than the A3 yes it is. And Cherry on top all Civics are made in Japan plant for Aussie I think. I drove this in coarse chip roads down under and the low profile tyre noise can be intrusive.
Please don’t make this cheap and spoil the drive and ride quality.
What ever car suits you be happy with it.
