This as a raw builders kit (no wheels/tires electronics or body but with straight axles) would be an amazing success. I could see most of us having more than one if it was offered this way…
I’d buy it in this option as I’m just starting out in this hobby
@@stphnklptrk save a little bit and get the kit for the JL in the long run you will be so much happier and learn how to fix things from building it
- I "HIGHLY" AGREE WITH YOU !!!!! 🤘😉👌
Imagine all the mud trucks that would be built on that chassis
@@maxb6226 no, the JL is a crappy truck, better to buy any 10:2 or the Trx-4
Somehow your polite bemusement in these reviews is more devastating to the product than someone trying to be critical or mean on purpose. Maybe it’s just a Canadian thing but I really enjoy it 😄
Hahaha! That honestly had me LOL. I think it might be a Canadian thing. Thanks for watching!
Definitely want to see a 10.3 raw builder's kit! With no tires/wheels, electronics or body it would become the go-to platform for high performance builds and would offer stiff competition to Element's kit if similarly priced.
Great work Matt. I think this base camp will serve as the future base line for a high performance crawlers with a few simple modifications. I’m excited to get one set up with some performance mods
So... It should have been an updated Deadbolt?!?
I actually just picked this up for how simple it is. It’s like a great starting point for new crawler drivers. I will definitely trim the front fender arch after seeing how badly it rubs under full compression steering. I for one actually dig the body. Again, simple and i won’t mind getting it dirty and scratched up and just using it on the trails
Agreed! It's one of the 3 that I recommend to anyone just starting out!
@@scalebuildersguild what are the other 2? My trx4 sport turned into a submarine in a freak accident so I’m looking to get a new one 😂😂
I would like to see this as a kit with the straight axles!
Yes. THIS!
Noob crawler here. I'm curious what you mean by "straight axels" and when I hear the term I think about the front and rear solid beam axel.
Just get an Enduro. Problem solved! I will say that if they released this in a kit with ar45 straight axles or even ar44 3 piece straight axles and could hit a price point of $240-250, I think it would be a huge hit. I'd def buy one or two lol
Sometimes I tell myself: you're an adult, the time to play with toys it's over. True. I'm 55. Then I take my rc car and put it in my suv and drive to that new place I found to drive my models and have my daily fun. I'm an adult and have fun in my life.
Awesome! Thanks for the comment!
Great review👍 completely agree about the licensing issue a base model RTR should not have any unessasary cost considering that the TRX4 sport has no licensed components that should have been a move axial paid attention to.
I wondered what Axial was going to do with all those portal axles! Good review. I like how you got right down to the core of things quickly with the transmission and showing the internals. I’m excited about this RTR and think a lot of people will choose this over the Traxxas. Also, shout out to the real true star of the video Mr Rear Bumper Leaf! 🍂🔥🍂 🔥💪
I'll recommend this to someone wanting to test out hobby.
Looks like a good matchup to the Element's
but since I already have 3 Elements, not sure I'd pick that over a Sendero Hd. if only for parts....
but they really did seem to be shooting for value here.
accounts making decisions ?
Yes it would make a terrific Raw builders base kit.
toss the parts you don't want or build as is.
I love it, I have an scx10iii already but hate getting it wet, simple is much easier to work on after getting it muddy
I love axial crawlers. I've had my scx10 I for probably 7 years at this point and I've only had to replace a servo. my nephew is 4yrs old and he beats the crap out of it and it still runs great 👍 I love my scx6 even more now that I have an RS2500 servo in it now
That's amazing! 4 year olds are rough. Thanks for watching!
Needs to come as a kit with straight & portal axle versions.
- **"YES"** 😉👌
Well, it's a truck, a new raw kit beidealbut almost need to call it Raw SCX10-IIII Squared,
Awesome job of filming this video Matt and what a fantastic area to drive in, love the terrain there. I was going to pass on this rig until you made the comment about using it as a loaner truck, what a great idea. I have a small fortune of both time and money invested in my trucks and feel very uncomfortable at the thought of letting a newbie try out one of the rigs especially on our home course. Having something like this for guests to run would take away all that anxiety of them using my more expensive ones however I wouldn't want to spent a lot for something that would be used only once and a while. Anyways another great video, mind you the soundtrack this time was a little, monotonous for most of it but hey you cant please em all. Thanks for the great review, keep em coming.
Thanks for watching! I'm not so keen on lending out my rigs to newbies either, so this kit seems like a good solution to that issue. Sorry you didn't like the music.. next time I'll sing, which will please no one 😂!
I’m not sure if anyone mentioned it yet… but the gears are built right into the transmission! Your buddy (HarleyD) already showed in his video, just disassemble it and turn a gear over and remove another one. Turns it into a four gear without changing the ratio! Just thought I would mention as you said you’re waiting for the gears to be available?! That’s all. Hey! I’m not wearing a hat now!
Thanks, yes, I wish that Axial had made that clearer in their manual!
@@scalebuildersguild My apologies. 🤦🏻♂️. Sorry to my fellow Cunuckistanian! HarleyD just corrected himself. You were correct in your video! Thanks for the great quality and accurate information. Keep it going, despite dummy know it all’s like me! I hate it when people call content creators out, and I did it myself in my end…
Good morning from Israel, as the owner of Axial 2 Cherokee a few years ago rtr and today I have Axial 3 bought as a kit people happy to see the hybrid beast that came out of the two above vehicles .... less complex and more reliability and net enjoyment.this rig will be hugely successful in my opinion and as usual .... the buyers will improve it with brushles and fuels .... as it comes it is not enough .... for you - an amazing video as always well explained in a convincing and fascinating way! well done!
Great video Matt. I appreciate your opinion and views on the Basecamp. This would be a great contender for a budget build off.
You're not the first one to suggest that. Thanks for watching!
Looks pretty fun to drive, with good performance. An ok starting point for somebody new to the hobby. It's unfortunate it's more expensive than a TRX4 Sport. I like the quieter and simpler transmission. I'm still very happy with my 10.3 JLU RTR.
These are the best budget rtr crawler hands down.
Definitely one of them!
Hemistorm just stated that no different transmission gears are needed, just a straight conversion to the straight axle.
👍
Well, it wasn't detailed in the manual, so he could be right (usually is)!

Perfect timing on the video as I have a friend who wants to get back into the hobby being his son is old enough (5 years old) and asked me about this truck as he definitely wants an axial rig so I sent him this video. I told him I have zero experience with the scx10 lll but I have the scx10 ll honcho and deadbolt for several years now and both took a ton of abuse. I also told him they're both much cheaper and me personally is a good platform to start for an rtr. But that's just my opinion, lol
If this were a raw builders kit, I would purchase almost immediately. Thank you for such a great review, as per usual.
Thanks for watching!
Nice review, Matt. As an alternative to the standard RTR, I would like to see an "ARTR" (almost-ready-to-run) without servo, ESC and Tx/Rx, so builders could choose their own electronics. I for one, don't want to accumulate a bunch of low-end transmitters, not to mention that it's not great for the planet. This "almost" ready to go formula has been successfully used in RC planes for decades now, and I think the RC crawler community would also really embrace it too.
I only recently got back into the RC hobby after quite a long hiatus from it, I started off with the Gen1. XMODS back during their golden age. I recently came back but this time on the crawling side of things rather than road RC cars and got into the SCX24s when an employee showed me alittle demo of one of them going over obstacles on their display case. 2 weeks after getting my first SCX24 ( C10 ) I ended up getting the scx24 Bronco on release day and already sunk quite a bit on money into both with the C10 having more done to it.
With the amount of money I spent on both the trucks as well as all those upgrades between the two, I could've got a trx4 or scx10III early bronco, but the scx24 I think was a good platform for me to get back into the hobby as well relearning how to replace/upgrade the chassis as I was already familiar with working on chassis' from my XMODS days.
For now, I'm still undecided between the Knightrunner, SCX10III Early Bronco or the TRX4 with my personal preference being an RTR over a kit for financial reasons. Airsoft and my car are still my primary hobbies and both are sink holes for my wallet with my car being the largest sink hole for obvious reasons.
You definitely made it difficult, because all 3 are great trucks and it all comes down to personal preference. Good luck with your decision, and thanks for watching!
I figure you might not want to give away some of your trade secrets, but the quality of your running videos, it would be really cool to get some behind the scenes and also tips and tricks you use while filming.
From the idea to the filming and the editing.
I for one would enjoy seeing that :) your follow-cam style stuff is just the best.
Thanks! I've done a couple editing tutorials, and I also share a bunch of tricks and tips for filming in those livestreams. Cheers!
OK, I’m watching on the TV and commenting on my phone. So far you have had the best review. Pointing out bad and giving credit we’re deserved. Thanks for your honestly. It does not look bad (I kind of want the tires for a build I’m doing) it just seems a bit expensive. And man the body is really bad🤦♂️
I know inflation is the new normal but I still think is a little high on the price for as simple as it is and I agree with you, I like simplicity.
looks like a huge step back in RC crawler evolution. Thanks for the Video
If you don't have one, or are new to the hobby, this might be a great starting point.
I think 350 would have been a better price point. 389 for this or 399 for the for the builder's kit. I'd go with the builder's kit. I think this is a truck I'll hold out for for them to put out in the kit version
Gotta say at 1st I didn’t like the body that much but after seeing and buying one in green, it’s really growing on me. Silver looks decent but I didn’t like the blue very much at all. Don’t like the windows at all. Wish they were just blacked out if they were gonna put stickers on. Also the headlights are a bit weird, wish they would’ve had a different design lol. Definitely trying to resemble an early - mid 2000s Toyota Tacoma. Overall I don’t think it’s the worst looking body, I’d take it over a TRX4 sport body any day.
I like the body look better than the Traxxas 4 sport. I would consider this truck for sure. If you want a cheaper trail truck and not a scale truck. Would love to see the one day build.
Oh, I was looking forward to watching this! First thing I did after (finally) getting my review up! Nice work, Matt. It's an unexpectedly brilliant little performer, eh?
The view at 20:53 seemed to show a mess of wires and no radio box - did you remove it or am I seeing things? (I think I've worked it out - you got a Day One model from Axial for their YT marketing that's been so successful recently. The later ones got the waterproof radio box. I think that's what's happened. Just curious but I think that mystery's solved now!)
As always, I really enjoy the aesthetics of your videos. Your work here on TH-cam remains one of the main inspirations that brought me to creating my own channel eventually. Now I'm off to check out what you and Josh did with the Base Camp build-off. Woohoo!
Definitely!
Looks like another good reason to buy a Sendero HD
If you are new to RC crawling and want a budget good looking truck I don't think you can beat the Redcat Gen8 version 2. International scout 2 body with clear windows and no body post holes (easy upgrade to magnets from Velcro as spots are molded into stock plastic for them). The V2 addressed issues of the initial release (smooth skid, stronger front top portal gear, stronger axle housings, plus upped the servo from 20kg to 25kg), and it comes with decent plastic beadlock wheels, good tires, front and rear light buckets, inner fenders, portal axles, and loads of molded plastic scale details. The only thing I would change right out of the box is to replace the stock foams to Proline duals stage XL 1.9 foams(best bang for buck upgrade period IMO), but this can be said for any RTR truck. Decent aftermarket support. All of this and only $329.99. The TRX4 sport $369.99 and this Axial $389.99 = fail. I do think a body-less and wheel-less/tireless builders kit version of this would be great for custom trucks.
If you're just getting started and want a big upgrade path, the Redcat wouldn't be my choice, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
I can't help but wonder why at this price point you wouldn't just get a Redcat Gen8? Seems like they overly price cut on details that would make it more desirable RTR. That said if this was a builders kit and reasonably priced I can see where it ould be very popular.
The running video was really nice! Truck looked good on the rocks.
It will be great to see and aftermarket part for a front lipo mount.
axial should do a squarebody chevy long bed on the gladiator frame rails, also kinda wish they did a front mounted motor with a divorced transfercase atleast rather than just a redesigned og transmission design, for the ability to do hard bodys easier
I actually love this, I don’t care for a dig or 2 speed, and I want to put my own body and electronics. If only they had a kit for this
I really think there are more attractive kits on the market. Axial had a great start with their first SCX10 CF-100 kit, which cost around 220€ back then but then focused too much on RTR.
Maybe Traxxas will now do a 1/24 scale crawler 😁
I hope traxxas does a few 24th scale rigs
@STEVE VENTO I really like Axial, especially here in Germany they were pioneers in RC crawling. I started with a CC-01 Tamiya for scale crawling and as the Scx10 came out, it was a whole new quality.
Yes! This looks like the truck to sway me back to Axial. Cost cutting isn't easy and with the trend of rolling back prices and getting back to a more feasible RTR cost I say a big THANK YOU! Axial and HH seem to be reading the market pretty well and filling the gaps. No leaky shocks (yet), lets all take a moment to let that sink in! 😆
Worth adding that I love the hat and it's so true here! As the hobby grows it seems people only look for things they don't like and shout it out.
I absolutely love my basecamp. Out of the box it was way to light and definitely ate fenders with the suspension cycle. Since my first run its now on a vs410 chassis and a jk body with treal strait axles and a 3 gear transmission so maybe its not a basecamp at this point but i still loved it in its stock form.
Cool!
My dude, much respect for calling it like it is which has got to be a bit tricky when they are sending you trucks! I agree I think that chassis has potential, and was glad to hear about metal in the panhard mount.
Did they leave it clear behind the lights??
No, everything is painted. The reason people send me things is because I'm honest, and want to give unbiased reviews to the community. Thanks for watching!
Well axial brought an old classic back with a new kick. The scx10i has gone a long way since the last power wagon pick-up option offered. Was flipping through the mag and here sat the pictures of the scx10i power wagon. And today we have a new pickup one of a few to grace us all from axial. 3 winch spots, Pretty slick axial or horizon, we'll whomever. builders kit of course it must be had throw in the straight axles as well sell twice as many. Include some over and under drive gears and A coupon for a free taco and I'm sold. ✌
i would get a builders kit of this model - probably in $200 - $250 range - the base looks good overall- by the way for the straight axle you just flip one of the gears in the transmission
always liked your choice of music
I only have a scx24 , I think this one would be a great upgrade, I like it !
I just feel like you get a bit more with the TRX4 Sport. You get rocksliders, and a front bumper that you can mount a winch to.
Like button selected to boost the algorithms. As you stated before, I get the idea of competing with the TRX4 Sport. I do like the truck and if the price is right who knows... I'd like you to do a small build series on it. Say like "What would Matt do" type thing. Suttle esthetic changes that help the overall look of the truck. Just a thought. As always, many thanks for the effort.
Cheers!!!
I agree a drop bed and at least plastic bead locks and clear windows or just do not paint at all but sure good to see something new
This would be a nice build with the new Proline Bronco body. It would be definitely be a no brainer to have this as the Raw builder kit. I will wait for Axial to release this as a kit.
Definitely needs to be a kit.
I agree that this would a great builders kit platform. Even the RTR is cool, I would probably replace the ESC and motor but would see how it went out of the box first. I don't mind the body on this. I do hate the painted windows with the stickers though... that should be something that doesn't happen any more! For the price I would have liked to see some inner fenders on it. They could even be generic, narrow ones. Still think it is a very appealing truck!
I’m kinda digging the body. But, it costs more than a TRX4 Sport? That’s a tough sell. ESPECIALLY with the Knightrunner is on the market at a fairly decent price.
Especially with the bodies other rigs have for similar price point
People can complain about Traxxas not updating the TRX-4 in like forever, but you can't blame them when the competition doesn't push them with something better. I'd be surprised if it is more durable or better performing, and more expensive than Traxxas? I will admit that is a feat in itself.
Its been raining all week, i just wanna go drive....at least i got some cool sbg to watch
Thanks for watching, and hopefully it stops raining where you are soon!
Ok I really like that rear bumper . I wish all trucks had bumpers fitted to the body like that . Would save it a shit ton!!!!!
Sand it! 😁 Great work as always, Matt!
Proline will be happy, new customers for a new body
The body rub on the steering is a very Toyota thing to do…. Nailed it.
I'm interested in this rig. If it came in a kit I would most definitely get one.
I do really like this option. And I do give them credit as they could’ve easily done another deadbolt or honcho. Also like the price 👍🏻 great video like always
Thanks for watching!
Hey Matt, got the Axial 10.3 JLU RTR last year. Got the Axial 55 Ford F 100 clear body. Painted it pale yellow. The front pins that come with it line up perfect the holes in the chassis. Waiting for the chrome door handles, mirrors, and wipers. Made my own drop bed and tail gate out of aluminum flashing. I'll send you a pic on IG.
Cool! Looking forward to seeing it. Thanks for watching!
Great video sir!! Love that action footage!
More to come!
I have the Bronco and the JLU. I don’t want the Base Camp but I do want the skid and transmission for the 10.3 trucks I already have.
I agree I think there is a lot of missed opportunities that wouldn’t have affected the price. Raw builders kit for sure.
I like the "Budget" approach. Put a set of Canyon Trails on and you'll have a Trax-ial. Great video. ;p
I have the TRX6. I love it, but I am definitely interested in a smaller rig. But, since I'm spoiled by the diffs and trans in the TRX6, I'll probably end up getting an optioned up TRX4.
Single speed, Axials better clearance portals. A cool body ! Except for the rubbing and painted windows.
Needs a sticker sheet and factory beadlocks, so you don’t have to bake wheels off😂
A good looking Trx4 sport competitor!!
Either way cool looking truck! I mean it’s not a Jeep or a Bronco 😉😂
One thing I’d really love to see in a kit form of it is a molded grill and brake lights (give us builders a chance to put that body to use) 🤪
Your running videos are inspiring Matt....
Cheers mate 👍
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Looking forward for a kit version of the Basecamp
Totally agree with you on the builders kit, except they should include the ar45 straight axles in it, not a fan of portals, transmission is interesting, shocks look like they could be some decent ones. Thanks for the video!
My personal fauvorite would be a raw builders kit. Just frame, gearbox and axles. No reciever box, no battery tray. Nothing but raw frame / driveline.
This as a raw builder's kit would be pretty much perfect. I would want to change the wheels/tires, body, and most of the electronics anyway.
I so agree that is hould be the new builders kit as they should 2 options just like traxxas 2 builders kits and maybe offer a better body with maybe some accessories I just bought my first builders kit and got the chassis 2 build from traxxas that included the electronics it came with a 2 speed tyranny and lockers for both front and rear .
So looking to get my first crawler and in Australia prices are all over the place. Currently in Australia the normal price for this is $200 less than the TRX4 Sport.
It’s kind of insane the markup on Traxxas in Australia.
I know, it's a real shame at how expensive things are for you guys in Aus!
I saw the BaseCamp on Horizon this morning and I'm just happy it's not another Jeep. Too bad the body looks... odd.
This'll likely be the one, even more so if they make a kit version.
I think this sold me on getting a TRX4 Sport, lol
Looks like they were going for TRD Pro (previously) exclusive colors Cavalry Blue, Cement Gray and Army Green(ish). And strangely, aftermarket headlights AlphaRex Nova’s.
Matt said Dooteee!
What is the Pitch of
Transmission gears?
Can’t wait for version 2
Next year!
I get the simplicity of this rig. What a great platform to customize! Customizing an rc is part of the fun, in my opinion. ( not that anyone asked ) nice review and run.
Thanks for watching!
I think the 1 mark that was missed to make this a raw builders kit was the transmission bolt pattern. Granted it seems to just be a skid plate replacement but not being able to put a tried and true 3 gear or dig trans in it is a bummer
They could have done the windows in black at least to look like tint
trx4 sport?😁😁 think i would still choose trx4 sport over this👍👍or better still trailfinder2👍
I have the Sport and Trail Finder 2 and love them both vs this new SCX10-III
@@crazyrusty7688 nice mate 😀 trailfinder2 is probably the best scale pickup you can get,i think anyway, hope to get one ,one day😀👍👍
@@rcplaytime I definitely recommend it, mine is the 2-door Mojave kit, powered by a micro Mamba X/2280Kv combo, only major suspension upgrade I did was swap the main black leaf springs for the red super soft springs for a little more flex
@@crazyrusty7688 thanks bro, great tip for the leaf springs😀👍👍
@@rcplaytime oh and I almost forgot, take the springs out of the Shocks and fill them with 30-40W shock oil, that also loosens up the suspension and less bouncy
Axial fans excited they finally have a true trx4 sport competitor, 4 years later. 🙄
I hate Traxxas with a passion and even I wouldn't consider this a true trx4 competition. If it's competing with anything it's a Redcat 😂. At this price point the Enduro and Sport both are so much better in every way
It's a good truck for what it's goals are, RTR entry level.
I'd like to see rawbuilders 10.3 kit with straight axle for $300! No tires, electronics or body.
My guess is it going to come as an RBK and come cheaper than the TRX4 Sport kit at around $279. Hopefully with straight axles!
Did it?
@@mcd00ga idk lmao, been outta the game for a while
Would be great raw builder's kit if they would doing that. I would get one to add to the fleet.
i would have thought the firma 40 2 in 1 esc/rx combo would have been installed in this to bring the price down even more. Not sure how i feel on the trans yet, seem like they could have just used the old 3gear. Kinda feels like changes, just because
Good vid as always, I totally agree with you on the straight axle for it and yeah would also make a good new kit version.
Hi Matt! I appreciate your hard work and humorous opinions. And on that subject, why would I or someone choose this truck over a scxii such as the XJ model for reference and those in that quality lineup?
This is Axial's direction going forward for a entry level crawler. I think finding upgrades for the older generations will get harder and harder. Time to embrace the new? Thanks for watching!
Base Camp Build Off!
Matt this video was made a year ago, but the Trx4 sport is at $519 I believe , and the basecamp is at $389 . These are Canadian prices
Okay, thanks!
looks like they wanted to make a larger 1/24 scale with 1/10 scale parts. i kind of like the concept, but not if its going to cost more than competitors that offer more bang for the buck...yup...then again, that 5 gear system is pretty neat
I guess I know what RTR I might get once my son and I build the trx4 sport kit this summer so we can drive together
I'd have hoped for something using the Capra axles.. but I guess they noticed the TRX sport taking all the lunches and had to act.
Greetz from Belgium 🇧🇪
Great running footage . Personally not keen on the body but looks very capable 👍👍👍
Great points about this and needing to be a builders kit, still I think the SCx10 II XJ is the best performing RTR ever made?
