when you say re-gear on minute 12:31, what gear part is used for that? how is that done? I want to modify to straight axles but cant find any instructions for gear mod
My observations are that it’s $20 more than a Traxxas TRX4 Sport and more than the Element Enduro, they dropped the forward motor mount and are giving yet another center mounted transmission design (Why?). Axial’s transmissions and which ones which is already confusing. I can do without the dig or 2speed, but they could have just made a simplified forward one. They got rid of the 3in1 ESC receiver combo which is a good idea as you had to drop more electronics and get a receiver if you wanted to upgrade. I think maybe they figured out their clickety mcclackerson forward transmission couldn’t be salvaged
The transmission has been my biggest problem with Axial lately. After using the industry standard for that many years, then all of a sudden abandon it for gizmo stuff. Associated invented the 3 gear for the RC10 . It's been copied ever since. I wish Axial had just put a dig unit on the back if the old 3 gear. I've always said, nothing worse than a bored engineer. I agree with others. I want a builder's kit or a roller. I might get one and put a deadbolt body on it. Black window stickers would look much better then the silver imo.
Nice! Here's hoping for a kit version, very interesting for custom builds. If not a kit version, then at least an ARTR (almost ready to run) without the electronics, so builders can chose their own.
I actually think Axial made a smart decision with this truck. It's essentially a rtr builders kit. I bet the sell a bunch of these. The haters will no doubt be out to add their 2cents but then again aren't they always...
If they were trying to budge the TRX4 sport as a budget option they missed by a huge margin. Its $20 more expensive and has no where near the aftermarket support as the TRX4. Honestly if they would have stuck with the old 3 gear trans with straight axles this would have been a better sell.
@@nj2033 weight is not always best over the front, weight low is where the performance is, yes you might be able to climb up steep terrain very slightly better, but coming back down or side hilling will just have it rolling over, which the TRX4 does, I've had 4 of them and always sold them because they perform so poorly, they aren't 'scale' either and in my opinion, just don't drive very nicely... They almost feel toy grade.
I’m actually impressed with what you get for the money I could see running it almost as is without having to replace a lot to suit my taste or because of durability issues, I’d still be dumping most of the electronics but I use a Spectrum system for my crawlers so RX wouldn’t end up in the bin but likely find itself in a different project. Obviously they are going after the TRX4 Sport. well have to see how it sells vs TRX4 and Element
Great video Josh. Hopefully Axial releases this as an even more affordable kit version. This truck might be a great contender for a budget build between you and Matt.
Axial pulled a typical Traxxas move on this one. Show up late to the game, make what appears to be a cheaper vehicle, and come in at a higher price point. Great idea, but totally missed the mark.
Portal axle element enduro it feels like. One of the first mods to that was remove/modify the bumpers. Also thanks for running the gates, ran some gates for the first time the other week, and I've owned my crawler for 3 years now? I would have been happy with the stock AR-44 Axles, with the Ripsaw Tires. And the stock XJ transmission running the plastic gears! After watching you run this Base Camp rig, I am thinking that the Sport rtr would spank this rig.
They call it a 5 gear transmission, it's technically a 4 gear. One is a step gear, that allows the switch to 3 gear type. if it were a true 5 gear type (all 5 gears inline then a switch to 3 gear would not change the rotation (reversing the movement). All racing buggy manufacturers have this type of switching (either with a new case or a secondary gear mount). so in mid motor config they can have proper rotation to allow motor on the proper side so the feel in the air (control over rotation of the vehicle) is the same from real motor (3 gear) to mid motor (4 gear). I'm not dunking on it, it's a solid solution for those who don't like dropped axle types. Just pointing out the step gear is probably one piece so though different tooth count, it is not two gears. Axial just made it confusing, Till you showed the transmission, I was trying to figure out how 5 gear to 3 gear was going to reverse rotation (FYI It doesn't). It may be common to call the step gear one gear in racing, but in manufacturing and design it’s still generally considered 2 gears. It’s semantics but I think it’s likely more clear to call it a 5 gear still.

@@nj2033 well if you want you can put the battery on the driver side tray Okay he video shows two battery locations And as long as the weight is 60/40 I don’t care where the motor is It’s a basic low budget truck If I want a performance truck I don’t buy any rtr I build front the ground up with cog in mind The only rig that has good low cog and has the best motor placement is the vanquish trucks
There are two battery positions, and the motor is moved back but much lower which improves performance. The side mounted battery is the best location available on just about any truck. I agree, a little OD and some weight tuning will turn it into a solid rig.

The 5 gear is an odd choice to me as well, it's interesting.
yeah I'm not too impressed with this one ..... after all the good stuff Axial launched in the last 1.5 years I'm shocked that they would do something like this. Love the name :) Base Camp
I have had a bunch of friends skip axial because the big price tag
So seeing a sub 400 truck from them would bring back a lot of entry level customers
@@Vanquishfanboy thats the one good point to this rig
It's hard to be impressed without really focusing on the price. It was clearly the main focus.
Kinda makes me think Axial made a Element Enduro that has portals. Not saying that’s bad. I’ll order one and see what this is like.
I can't say its the worst thing I've seen Axial do, but nothing about it really excites me. It feels like an answer to a question nobody asked.
So axial released a Scx10 version that is backwards in quality and features….🤷🏼 why?
All about the dollars, trying to make it more affordable.
What would you recommend when it come to trail truck kits? I have been looking at the phoenix, the trail king and some of the rc4wd. I want something that I would be able to hike with but also potentially compete with. Any thoughts?
All those options are great trail trucks, but not good for competition imo
Competition trucks are almost purpose built, they don't make great trail rigs.
I got my trx4 sport to do 6 hrs/3 battery packs/ 9000+ feet of elevation. Stock. No issues.
I feel like a gen 8 v2 might be what most people thought this should be
They could use a softer rubber and foam
It's a really good looking tire but the R35 compound is not what it used to be.
@@HarleyDesignsInc I like the look as well
Nice scenery mate. Not a fan of that body but I’m amazed it’s not another jeep from axial tbh 🤷♂️😉
Axial did a good job! I’m dig it!
Some overdrive
A touch of brass
And good tires and this rig will do great!
Batteries in the back and most of the weight moved back.... 🤮🤮🤮
@@nj2033 well if you want you can put the battery on the driver side tray
Okay he video shows two battery locations
And as long as the weight is 60/40
I don’t care where the motor is
It’s a basic low budget truck
If I want a performance truck I don’t buy any rtr
I build front the ground up with cog in mind
The only rig that has good low cog and has the best motor placement is the vanquish trucks
There are two battery positions, and the motor is moved back but much lower which improves performance. The side mounted battery is the best location available on just about any truck. I agree, a little OD and some weight tuning will turn it into a solid rig.
Yes it’s ugly as sin lol BUT It’s supposed to be cheap guys ! It’s for beginners just to get you going to get your foot in the door!
Thats definitely the goal!
whats the weight difference on the trans compared to 3gear?
Maybe I can do that on Friday's live stream
My trx4 sport is looking at me and saying don't you dare lol
What is the Pitch of transmission gears?
Internal trans gears are 48p.
All it needs is a Jeep body and its perfect 😂🤙 Another awesome rig review!
I love me a JEEP!
I kinda like it !
Do I love this more than my Wraith 1.9? Not really.
Thats a hard rig to beat.
I kinda feel bad for the R&D department under the current constraints. I feel that regardless of some of the short points this may fall upon, building a vehicle based on price point and bringing more people into the hobby is a win for the community. With that being said, so many companies are falling under the horizon umbrella and a platform such as this allows them to flourish through upgrades and give us , the consumer more options in the long run. 👍🏻Axial!
Hello from southeast alaska do you have any stickers for my rock crawlers?
Welcome to the world of Traxxas!!! 😈
Budget build off?
I like it
More people should look into RGT, especially if you like element vehicles because they are the same. In fact all crawlers are hsp products.
This is essentially an 86100
