As for the laundry liquid recipe - here it is:1
1 pan with 1.5litres of cold water
8ozs grated household soap
4ozs washing soda grains
4ozs Borax (optional)
Large pan with 8L of cold water.
1) Add the dry ingredients to the pan with 1.5L of water and heat gently, stirring until all the soap has melted.
2) Add the soap mix to the large pan with cold water and stir until cool. If required, add some of your favourite organic essential oil for a lovely smell.
3) Pour the soap mix into containers and fill to 2/3rds full.
4) Shake well before use and use about 2-4ozs of laundry liquid in your wash.

We have a safe laundry bar soap in Australia that comes as 4 X125 g bars for around $A4. I grate one and a half bars, add 1 cup of washing soda $0.80 in 2L of rainwater, heat until dissolved and make up to 9L in a sealed bucket. Add 10 drops each of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil for their aroma (fresh) and anti-bacterial properties. Sometimes some lavender oil too if the whim happens. We use about 1/4 -1/3 cup per wash. Total outlay around $A5.20 for ingredients and energy so at todays rate about E3.20 for 9L. I dont use borax simply because we are off grid for water, waste water and grey water and we use it on the ornamental garden.
When the virus hit ,people here panic bought cleaning products, bare shelves in our supermarkets everywhere, we had plenty of laundry soap ingredients, plenty of soap making materials, lots of citrus and herb vinegars (home made) on hand in our stores as we bulk buy when specials happen and just went about life as usual. I also make a genuine castille liquid soap using the slow cooker so shampoos and dish soap were well covered too. Lot to be said for being genuinely green in outlook and lifestyle. I'm so happy I found this!! I recently ran out of laundry soap (supposedly eco-friendly but I was doubtful). My husband needed his clothes washed so I boiled down one of my Aleppo soap bars (beautiful olive oil soap from my home country Syria) and added plenty of water. I didn't add essential oils thought i thought about it, but Aleppo soap is already pleasantly fragrant (I didn't add washing soda either because Aleppo soap is what i had been using anyway to remove stains, something I learned from my mother, which is how I knew it would make good laundry soap.) I decanted it into the old "eco-friendly" plastic container of my previous laundry soap and then used it and it was SO wonderful. I'm never going back to store-bought laundry soap EVER again!

I made it! Used lavender instead of lemon myrtle (because that's what I had) and I find it's fantastic 😀 my daughter in law gave me a lovely kilner bottle and I found a beautiful shot glass that sit on my kitchen counter. The rest is in a huge tub with a lid waiting for the kilner bottle to empty. Thanxxx so much x

I WILL be doing this!! One would naturally assume parfum is perfume - For years now I have been washing in cold water and don't use the dryer for clothes - because I find my clothes last longer and never fade in colors. I realize this can be quite a chore (hanging wet laundry) if one has a large family, but I don't now and find this method very good for keeping clothes cleaner and fresher. Stains can be soaked prior to laundering. I agree with you about words like "Green & Eco" becoming buzz words. Thankyou for this information and many blessings to you and yours! from Canada....:)
All of my washing is dried on a line. I never use a drier except the odd time during winter when we have days and days and days of rain. The old fashioned way is better for clothes and for the environment. x
Deal Terry , you can also use ivy leaves for wash dark clothes . Chop the leaves and put them in water and boil ist and than drain . Trank you for the wonderful Videos . Best regards from Conny Braun and cat Felix from Germany .

Hi Terri I always make my own using a cup of each washing soda and bicarbonate of sofa, dissolved in boiling water lemon juice and essential oil, such as lemon, geranium or lavender. When it has cooled a little, when topped up with cold water. Makes between 2 and 4 litres depending on the concentration.

I make washing powder of washing soda and bicarbonate soda, but I also add Epsom salt due to hard water. I don't boil it... Maybe I should try that...
I also made liquid laundry soap of grated home made coconut oil bar soap. I found the recipe at "Elly's everyday soap making" here on youtube. I gave it o my daughter to try it.
For my hair I make shampoo bars... rinse it with tea made from dried rosemary, peppermint and hibiskus. I'm a "grey brunette" with very thin hair. Sometimes I use white vinegar mixed with water (I can't stand the smell of ACV...) as a rinse and my gets so soft!
I am now on my second batch of laundry liquid, per your recipe. I also do my mums washing as she is 90, and both of us have very sensitive skin, which would ich like crazy until I switched to your recipe instead of the store bought. Now, our skin no longer iches, so thank you for your video. Now, all my household products are homemade. ❤

I make my own laundry soap for my family too. I put mine in a 5 gallon bucket. I use it in powder form. I had to go to the laundry mat the other day to wash all the bedding and blankets. Spring cleaning time. I forgot my laundry soap at home and ran to the local grocery store to grab soap and it was so expensive compared to what it cost to make my own.
That's one of the reasons to make our own!
Hello from CT, USA! Very much enjoy your videos. I’ve been watching for about a year now and came across this one. Absolutely agree that many of the commercial washing soaps offered are garbage! My wife and I have been making our own for 3 or 4 years now at the encouraging of our daughter. We would never go back to buying our laundry soap!

My grandmother and mother always made laundry soap at home in Spain when I was little. It was also a great way of recycling used oil. We always stored used oil, ( after frying) and whenever we got 3 litres we made the soap.
3 litres of oil
3 litres of water
1 kg of caustic sose
Gloves and glasses on, mix the caustic sose with the warm water ( 40degrees) then pour the oil slowly and stir with a stick for a while till the mix thickens, then pour in boxes/milk cartons. Important:the water mustn't be too hot or the mix might burn you.
It's the only laundry soap that was ever used in my house. After it had set, they grated it,then dissolve it in water and put it in the washing machine.
Grandma added bail leaves to the mix for a nice smell.
That soap is so eco friendly that it didn’t even bother the fly.
❤🧡💚💜 now I use 6-8 ivy leaves for in washing machine..

Thanks for the recipe! I use the leftovers from my daughter's soap making business. She makes natural soap with different vegetable fats and essential oils. Have you ever tried using your homemade soaps for your laundry? For my whites I used our Portuguese blue soap dissolved in hot water which unfortunately also has synthetic compounds and then I do a second cycle with. my daughter's soap leftovers which I dissolve in hot water.
For the dark clothes I've been making a washing solution with boiled English ivy leaves and I add some sodium bicarbonate... the clothes come out smelling fresh. There are some TH-cam videos with this recipe of english Ivy soap. All the best
English Ivy leaves are great for cleaning. You could also try Soapwort, especially the roots and Horse Chestnut leaves and conkers. So much in Nature for all our needs xx

I love the Perfume fragrances of laundry detergent. My daughter-in-law made her liquid laundry detergent for several years, and her clothes just didn’t come clean. Little girls underwear....totally unclean when they came out.... discolor on clothes that are suppose to be white.. she finally said she wasn’t making anymore. Good!
It is not perfume, that smell is chemical and very damaging to health.
Me too I must have "scent" in my laundry detergent. Can I add essential oil to my laundry detergent? Lavender would be wonderful. I would love almond to.

Hi Terri just thought I’d let you know I Just finished making a batch with the Marseille soap I bought, mind heck of a mess pouring into containers blame that on old age, but I’ve got loads now ready. Definitely need to check you have enough containers before starting I was struggling to find enough. Will make sure of that next time. My kitchen smells like when my Mam used an open boiler and mangle when I was very little the memory came flooding back and my hubby said the kitchen smells nice when I asked for the doors to be all opened to air it out, were open plan. So again a big thank you. No need to respond Terri just letting you know how I went.
I know what you mean about the old washing machine smell - I had a mangle in the early 80s - someone passed it on to me and it worked great!
I had an old mangle too when I was first married. I loved it, if you folded the washing carefully when putting through the mangle, it saved on the ironing, especially sheets! Brilliant. ;)

I endorse the point you make about laundry products not being necessary if you are using a washing machine especially if the clothes are not heavily soiled- try it! Same goes for dish washing machines.

Another option is soap nuts, though you need to be careful to buy them from a sustainable source online, as they don't grow in Ireland.
Tried them in the past but it is a long way they have to come..

Great video! I really appreciate all the information you give us along with the practical instructions. However, I wonder about the use of borax. In sweden, where I live, borax is considered as a reproductive inhibitor and therefor not allowed in childrens toys or things like detergent. It is even planned to be replaced as a flux in metal working. Do you have any clue on why it is viewed differently in Ireland?

Terri, this is perfect timing for me. I make a laundry powder but find it can sometimes smear dark clothes, so the liquid is ideal. I also learned that a very famous 'ecological' brand of washing powder/washing up liquid etc. has been taken over for quite some time, keeping the name but adulterating the product. A big thank you. i shall be straight on this. On another matter, I have natural grey hair like you (the photo is out of date - must change it). what do you think a good way to clean and condition grey hair in particular? I love these vlogs - so informative and useful on a practical level. I am very impressed with the Four Thieves Vinegar featured in a recent Udemy herbal course you did. it has become my go to product. Keep going. You are much appreciated and by the way the colours you are wearing today look lovely on you.

It is very disappointing isn't it when companies are taken over and the consumer doesn't know. The brand I was using has been taken over by a pharmaceutical company that has recently paid out 4b in damages!! As for my hair, i just wash it. I don't use conditioner, maybe once in a blue moon I might put a tiny spot of face oil on my palms and rub them over my head.

It’s the same with hand soap. I was working at a hospital when the Center for Disease Control here in the US released a study saying it’s the agitation of scrubbing your hands that gets rid of germs. This comment isn't accurate. Water alone may remove most but not all germs. From the CDC website:
Is it better to use warm water or cold water?
Use your preferred water temperature - cold or warm - to wash your hands. Warm and cold water remove the same number of germs from your hands. The water helps create soap lather that removes germs from your skin when you wash your hands. Water itself does not usually kill germs; to kill germs, water would need to be hot enough to scald your hands.

I have been making my own washing powder, but will try this liquid type. Almost identical ingredients as yours. I use Fels Naptha soap for mine.

I love your videos, Terry. thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom. I had switched to Seven Generation laundry detergent thinking it was better than what i had been using and to a certain extent it has been, I also went through a 'phase' of making my own detergent then got out of it for some reason. I looked at their label and although they assure their consumers that everything is biodegradable I don't like that some of what I'm reading is heavy laden with estrogen. I'm going to start doing my own again. I am headed to that webite you recommended to what else I can learn. thanks again.

You are very welcome. The soap I used is a solid castille/olive oil soap but you could grate any soap you are happy with.

I just made a batch of this laundry soap and used half quantities as I like alone. I used lemon essential oil in some and marjoram in the other.
Just waiting for the washing machine to finish the spin cycle so I can give it a sniff 🙂 I've never been so excited for the washing to be done 😂

Go for it! I got my soap from the health shop but you may get it in an old fashioned hardware shop. If you can't get it, use any plain household soap.
Thank you for showing this I fully understsnd about skin irritants I used a cleaning product at my sister's 2 yrs ago and it caused dermatitis on my hands it affects everything I do cooking my hobby crafting my job even getting dressed making pulls in my clothes all creams from my GP useless I have purchased and tried everyone cream on the market. At the moment it's not too bad with the warm weather but I have to wear rubber gloves for daily cleaning and the antibacterial gels really sting my skin I will look into making the washing liquid thank you and your top is lovely on you and colours suit so well Blessings have a lovely day xx

You are a winner Therese - don't forget. The washing soda is also known as washing grains or soda grains. They are based on a salt - sodiumbicarbonate. Usually found in hardware or laundry sections. xxx

I tried them years ago Mary but when I thought of the distance they had to travel I decided using them wasn't really helping the environment - use local! Horse Chestnuts can be treated to work just as well. An English couple did a video about it. I think they roasted the HorseChestnuts first but they worked just as well xxx

It may be happening because of Christmas. Alkalise your diet, cut out dairy and processed foods and eat lots of veggies. For moisturising there are lots of wonderful plants - Plantain, Marshmallow, Carrageen - but it depends on the type of eczema you have. Good luck!
