I am a natural herbal soap maker and have made soap more times than I can count. In spite of this, watching you make soap is such a pleasure😊. Thank you for your encouragement to people who are considering soaping. It is extremely satisfying.
Wow, thank you! So kind of you and you are right, it is extremely satisfying and once you are used to your own soap you can never use any commercial soap again. xx
Thank you for demistifying soap making. I've looked into it in the past and got frightened off but you offer something here I feel confident I could make. Clearly not a process to rush, but I shall definitely give it a go. Yet again, Terri, thank you so much. Being able to make my own products does indeed make me feel empowered.
It really does Lyn; and then when it is cured and you get to use it ....! Take your time, be cautious with the caustic soda and you will find it is quite easy. Best of luck.x
I just wanted to encourage you to make your own soap if you didn't get around to it. My aunt taught me to make soap at her house. It really surprised me how easy it is. My aunt had a coffee shop and decided to learn to make cold process soap to sell at her shop for extra income. She got super creative. Terri didn't mention it, I would add, put together a soap making "kit" which you don't mix with your food cooking pots, moulds, blender, spatulas, lye jug, etc. I put gloves on, and safety goggles on to protect my eyes, and an old long sleeve top, pants, and covered shoes just incase of spills. Have a bottle of vinegar at hand to pour over your skin if you get any lye or soap mixter on your skin. Safety is very important when making soap, because the lye is caustic. I also cover the area I'm working on with a plastic table cloth to protect the surface I'm workung on. I mix my lye next to an open door and put it on a tray that won't burn a surface if there are any splashes. I get everything I need ready, and measure precisely, before starting. Once you start making soap you can't stop. The lye solution must be at the right temperature and the oils. One can't go and take a long phonecall while you are making soap. 😂 The water goes into a glass jug, then you add the lye granules very carefully and stir. The lye will go clear. Water and lye (caustic soda) causes a chemical reaction which generates heat. Meanwhile the oils must melt and be heated to the right temperature. As Terri say's, the oil and lye must be at the same temperature to blend together. Not cold. Having a thermometer is essential. I bought a candy making thermometer. Once you carefully blend the lye and oils, your soap mixture will thicken to trace. If you are not going to use your overn for 24hrs, you can put your moulds with soap mixture in the cold overn, and close the door. It seals it, and the soap mixture can carry on doing it's chemical process. The mixture gets hot because the lye and oils are doing their thing. Eventually it cools down and gets cold. Then the magic happens when you pop the soap out the moulds.. Voila, you just made soap. 😊 I wash everything very well to get all the lye, and soap mixture off the thermometer, bowls, pot, jug, etc. Tip: I went to second hand shops and bought as much as I could. Use stainless steel spoons, and a pot. I buy all my silicone moulds second hand. It saves alot of money. Also because everything I use for soap making is seperate from my cooking utensils. To save money, below are some items I bought at second hand shops, or charity shops to build up my soap making kit: Soap recipes are measured out by weight in grams. It's a precise chemical recipe, so getting everything weighed is important or the soap batch will fail. Scale Silicone moulds Glass jug Mixing bowl or stainless stell pouring pot Stainless steel spoons Spatulas Stick blender Jugs for making different colours of soap when you get fancy I bought second hand rose shaped moulds, hearts, stars, Cute insect moulds like lady bugs, dragonflies and butterflies. Easter bunnies, etc. The sky is the limit. I also have rectangle moulds for the traditional slices. Making your own moulds from recycled milk cartons is also great. I have used those too. I began soap making in South Africa. It took some time to find suppliers for all the ingredients. Soap fragrance or essential oils are expensive and difficult to find in quantity. I don't know about other countries? America seems to have everything, they are great that way. You can shop online in America. But not where I live. Shipping is expensive. I moved to Germany in 2019 and had to start all over. I literally came here with my suitcase. Almost everything I bought over time is second hand. I get to help save the planet too. It is very difficult to buy soap making products in Germany because they are so strict with everything. Coconut oil and olive oil is no problem. But getting alot of fresh lavander is not easy. I haven't tried to grow it where I live as yet. It's very cold in N Germany, we also get harsh cold winds. I love the fresh lavander oil infusion and infusion of the lye water, but I don't have fresh lavander growing so I need the buy essential oil to put into my soap batch. What I'm trying to say is getting everything you need first is important. The actual preperation is easy. Once you have made your own soap, you will be amazed at how easy it is and it's so rewarding. 😁💕 Good luck. Happy soap making. 😊💐
I made your shampoo today and this soap is next. I completely agree with your stance on silicone. Look what it's done to breast implants. I've banned it from the house. I'm really looking forward to washing my hair tonight. If it turns out as lovely as yours I'll be delighted. Thank you so much Terri. 🙏😊
Good aye and blessings from an Irish gal living in Australia, such a blessing to watch you create magic💚☘️, I used to make my own soaps about 15 years back♥️🤘, as soon as this tut started my mouth watered, remembering the creative process, Thankyou for helping me re kindle the passion of the art of soap making, you are a true daughter of DANU, Simply beautiful xxxx
Made my first soap recently inspired by yourself. Going to make soap with beeswax, shea butter and frankincense for some family members who have skin issues. Thank you for creating confidence to do this.
Hi Terri..Thank you for rekindling my past passion of soap making. I used to make cold pressed soap for my own use & also try & sell it at local markets for a pittance but people were not really interested. I too used silicone cake moulds & milk cartons for moulds & will have to clear my bench space, find all my equipment & get soap making again.
Definitely wear eye protection BEFORE you put the caustic lye into the water. Friend of mine (a very experienced soap maker) was nearly blinded by a splash.
Sounds serious! I heard White Vinegar could neutralize the burn. Honestly I once got a bit of lye water in my eye then quickly threw some apple cider vinegar into that eye. My eye sight is perfect... unless I get too much screen time lol
I have been making soap for a few years, and I have found that once the lye has dissolved, I can add the coconut oil and the heat from the lye solution will melt it. Then I add the olive oil. (50/50 olive coconut is my favorite!) For the liquid, I use either salt water or frozen goat milk. I just sprinkle the lye onto the frozen cubes of goat milk to melt them. It doesn't get hot enough to melt the coconut oil that way though. I love the idea of infusing herbs into the oil. I will be doing that in my next batch of soap!
I bet that smells wonderful too! Lavender is a fantastic plant. Very easy to grow, the bees love it and it has so many uses. I have a little lavender pillow that I ruffle up now and then to get the lovely smell. I think I need to grow some next year in my little patio garden. =)
Thank you! You're such a lovely woman and I have known for a number of years now that I should be making my own soaps but have never done it. I am bound to try now with this simple recipe - thanks again!
Terri I love your channel. Your so calming and relaxing ! Blessings 💓💓 I will definitely be trying out some of your wonderful recipes and tips from a bygone age I remember well as a child! X
I absolutely love your videos. I learn so much. Always making notes. I’m in a tiny apartment with no balcony so I went on a trail and found some lavender and it’s drying now. I’m looking forward to making this recipe. ❤❤❤
This is the first soap making video I've watched and so glad I started here! I thought it was so much more complicated and expensive. The idea of recycling milk carton instead of buying $100 special soap making box and cutting tool fantastic. Thank you so much!

i've been watching this video every now and then since you posted it and today was the day I finally wrote down the recipe and actually made my very first batch of soap! I just wrapped it in a towel before sitting to write this. Thank you for showing that making soap doesnt have to be a complicated or scary process. I think however next time I will wear some sort of mask because I found the lye solution to be irritating to my throat.
So glad you made the soap. The lye can be irritating to throat and eyes. Keep windows open or stand it outside til the fumes disperse. The goggles can help with the eyes. I am so used to it now and I keep the animals away when I'm busy.
I imagine your soap bars smell wonderful Terri! I guess it would be the same process for rose petals and other plants too. Thanks for all you share with the world xo
I so enjoyed your video! I have always wanted to make some soap but the soap making instructions that I have seen made it look so complicated but you make it look so simple. I am going to make some soap!
I just came upon your channel and very happy to have been introduced to you. I’ve shared your channel with a few people and thank you for making it look so doable. I will for sure look at your web sight and check out your workshops too. In the time we are living your gifts are quite needed. Thank you!!!!
Thank you that was very interesting to watch I don't feel confident enough to do it myself although I do have 4 lavender plants in my garden I buy homemade soaps from Esty and I love giving them as presents Have a lovely week xx
Hi Terri. Iam hooked on your Videos now... You explain everything so well. Love hó you take us around your garden and up and down the road. Pointing out all the wild flowers.. I have a serious Lung disease, I would be afraid using the Caustic Soda..... I would love to make the Soaps though... Thanks for sharing... You are a wonderful soul ❤️
I can understand - caustic soda would not be good, although you could do it outside and go back to it after 10 mins or check out this website - www.lovelygreens.com she has great soap recipes and there may be one without CS.
Thanks. Fumes are a good reason to take caution. Goggles yes perhaps a mask as well. I’d wear an apron. I notice you use glass bowls etc I guess glass is best mixing caustic soda and stuff vs metal bowls .
Oh lovely Terri ty. I've been making ready pour soaps through lockdown and wanted to try this but was a little scared of the process. You've made it seem very easy so I'll be giving it a try. I've got lots of Lavender to use from the garden so hopefully, if I can be patient enough I'll certainly try this.x
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden I watched a lot of videos and it seemed you needed all sorts of equipment which put me off! This looks very easy to do once you get used to handling the soda I expect? That's the scary bit for me. I can play around with crafts for hours so the time doesn't worry me! It's grand trying out new things isn't it and I think we should all give things a go to try and be more sustainable. I think it's having someone with the knowledge too to explain in an easy way and outline the options we have to encourage more of us to try new things. I've loved lockdown if only for developing new skills, I've been in my element lol. Ty so much Terri, I absolutely love these videos, especially the garden tour ones. Take care.x

hi this looks so good, must try to make it, lavender is my favourite scent
It looks more difficult than it is - be careful with the lye!

Excellent video. I really would like to give this a try. Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear you will give it a go.
Thankyou for sharing this most informative video, appreciate tutorial would love to do some day, thinking a winter project for me. Ontario Canada 🐝
It is nice to make in winter. Do it at least 6 weeks before Christmas and then you have presents sorted.
Thanks Terri I will check that out... Love your videos 💞
Thanks. Fumes are a good reason to take caution. Goggles yes perhaps a mask as well. I’d wear an apron. I notice you use glass bowls etc I guess glass is best mixing caustic soda and stuff vs metal bowls .
Another good video, important to know these skills, thanks.
You're welcome!
That was great thank you 🙏🏻
Oh lovely Terri ty. I've been making ready pour soaps through lockdown and wanted to try this but was a little scared of the process. You've made it seem very easy so I'll be giving it a try. I've got lots of Lavender to use from the garden so hopefully, if I can be patient enough I'll certainly try this.x
It seems daunting Wendy but if you set aside half an hour where you won't be disturbed and take precautions, you will find it easy. Enjoy the process!
Take care.x
@@wendymcfarlane9068 the only equipment I bought was the thermometer. I just use a big saucepan and a pyrex jug. That's it.
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden I've got all thet so I'm going to give it a try this weekend, ty!!xx
Love ❤️
Fascinating. I looked up caustic soda. I just bought some organic mugwort soap.
It is fascinating to think that something so caustic can help to generate glycerin.😃
This looks easier then I expected. I am So excited to get making my Soap. Thank you 💜
It is easy, just watch out when blending, for the lye. That is why people wear goggles. Enjoy!
I been wanting to make homemade soap for years I just haven't done it I guess because of the lye
Same 😂
Love it!
