@@phenofinder9145 Well that statement is factually incorrect. BB infinite installs from the non drive side, mine don't. BBinfinite has a "preload" sleeve which is a fundamental part of their patent which mine doesn't have (I think it's a waste of time and weight) and finally, you need compressed air tools (an air hammer) to remove a BBinfinite bottom bracket. I trust that gives you the necessary response to clarify the inaccuracies in your statement. But should you need any help (in whatever area), please don't forget to consult your local hairdresser for a suitable haircut.
When I find a product that works. A product that lives up to its promise, I am very loyal. I bought a Wheels replacement BB for my S works Tarmac and could not be happier. I think I need to add some of those tools to my toolkit now also
This format reminds me of Fred Rogers' (aka, Mr. Rogers) format. In many episodes, he met his TV viewer at his house, took the viewer with him on a visit to a friend (e.g., a shoe salesman), summed up the lessons post-visit, and took the viewer back to his house. I don't know if such a format was intentional, but I really enjoyed it and found it oddly comforting. Now you need a red sweater! Thank you!
Lol! I do change my shoes when I come back into the house… Fred Rogers was a legend. I am no Presbyterian minister, but I am aligned with the guy on a lot of things.
Good stuff! Never knew all that about BBs. This bike mechanic is awesome. Impressive know-how and friendliness, no bs. I like people like this. Keep coming with videos like this Ben and 'enjoy the ride'! 😉
I had a Giant Defy. Press fit bottom brackets creak, period. It’s natural to assume that. I hate creaks so I will investigate right away. It took a year to stop the creak including trying a wheels manufacturing BB. It made noise after a couple of weeks. Press fit BB’s are now a deal killer for me. My current bike has a T47 threaded bottom bracket making it easy to service. I don’t need an expensive bearing press! I also use Morgan Blue aqua proof paste. It’s the bottom bracket silencer!
Great video! As a machinist, seeing behind the curtain is always satisfying! As native Coloradoan seeing a gray winter day reminds me why I left and haven't gone back. Thanks for all you do Ben!
I have been listening to your voice for years on podcasts. It is cool to be able to be able to put a face to that voice. Keep up the fantastic work. We appreciate you Ben!
I've changed every bearing on my full sus mtb, serviced the shocks, checked the brakes and cleaned and greased every inch of my bike and I still have a ticking sound!!! driving me flippen crazy! Gonna get new brake pads and re-bleed the system, probably the cassette that needs replacing as well. Fun and games.
I've never heard anyone say home again home again lickity split, the old nursery rhyme is home again home again jiggidy jig. But I definitely say it often when I'm just about home. Great vid as always, keep em coming.
Every new build I do gets a Wheels MFG bottom bracket. My previous gravel bike got one when it was brand new and then a replacement around 7,500 dirty, nasty miles later. Their screw together press fit was the only thing I tried that kept my BB silent on that bike. My new bike, thankfully has T47, and it got a Wheels BB as well.
Saw your doppleganger the other day. Was checking out the Paramount+ streaming network, this tv show called Evil, and there, right at the beginning of episode1, season 1, this character called Orson. Actor's name is Darren Pettie.
Ive given up powerwashing my cross bike and just shower with it. the dirt around here is sandy clay that doesnt want to come off with a power washer anyway.
Good video, I definitely rate wheels mfg products. Surprised he didnt use a bearing puller to extract the BB though. And shimano advise NOT to use grease with their plastic press fit bb's.
I know it's dull and unfashionable but I use Shimano square taper for my most abused bikes. I've ridden some for over a decade. I once knew a wise old Scottish gentleman who was fond of saying "Improvement means deterioration".
I was under the impression that for press fit into carbon bb shells you need to use some form of loctite. Doesn’t grease make carbon expand ? Years ago I used grease on my carbon seat post and struggled to remove it afterwards.
You are right; the crank did need to be replaced. I had just set up an appointment to tour Wheels and have Dan explain their processes when I thought it was my bottom bracket. So I just went ahead with the story anyway.
@The Ride with Ben Delaney "everybody" is enthusiastic with the latest Revolt but that seatpost / seat tube thing gets me worried...I've bought most of my bikes mildly used, but I would not buy that w/o warranty 😢
When I saw him pound the side of the crank after installing the BB 86 he said it was a tight fit. When I put the crank into my Hambini BB it went into place with hand pressure no pounding required. Obviously a precision designed and engineered component
That tight fit is largely from the misalignment you get from the frame. The hambini design being one-piece largely corrects that and offers a straighter line for the crank to pass through.
I also wanted to use it as a demonstration of how riders can determine what sort of BB replacement they need, and Dan and I filmed that, but it would have made the video like 40min long. I am still figuring out what subjects work lengthwise for video. 🤷♂️
@@achn2b You're not wrong! Although I did ship the bike back to Giant a week after I filmed this. (All test bikes go back; some I hold onto more stubbornly than others for a few months, but they all go back.)
I agree that bringing a dirty bike to a shop is not cool. So you know, Wheels MFG is a manufacturer and not a shop, and I talked to Dan before I came about riding over there. And for the record, the bike was clean before riding there in a bit of snow. I appreciate you looking out for shop mechanics; they absolutely deserve respect. 🤜🤛
As much as I consider Wheels MFG a competitor. Respect to the guy (and the company), he said everything that is true and didn't sprout out any BS.
Dan is a no-BS guy.
Yeah and my wheels mfg bb spins forever for less than half the price of the bb Infinite bottom bracket clones you try to sell

Great video. No unnecessary marketing BS. A real life mechanical issue, a vlog, a fix, and tour of a facility all in one video.

Fascinating. It's amazing how much I don't know about what goes in to making a bicycle work. Thanks for the education and entertainment!
Great video, Wheels Manufacturing is top notch
Have one of these in my gravel bike after the original bearings failed. Sooooo smooth and no more creaking. Awesome
Excellent as always. I'm now seriously considering one of these next time I need a BB.
Thanks for making this video Ben! My pressfit BB is just starting to creak after about 6,500 km in so this info is timely.

I put a wheels manufacturing BB in my revolt after the stock one started creaking. It’s been grate for 2 seasons now.

I also went to Wheels Mfg to replace my Revolt’s bb. 10,000 miles later I never need to think about it.

Ah, man - so annoying!
Also changed the BB on my Revolt Advanced 0 to Wheels MFG thread together. On mine I could press the new BB in by hand.
Great vid 👍

Aw, thanks.
I just one installed on my Canyon Grizl...very happy!
I have Wheels Mfg BB in both my road and gravel bikes…they have been excellent.

I'd be pretty disappointed if I only got 7500miles on a BB.
I run Wheels Manufacturing threaded BB86 in my Checkpoint ALR...will probably be getting one when time comes for my RM Element C too (sorry Hambini).

Really surprised by the method used to remove the bearings!! Not the method Park Tool tools used in their video on removing bottom bracket bearings.

I love my wheels manufacturing BB with angular contact bearings
See, this is why I stick to N=2. I couldn't maintain any more than two bikes given everything else in #life . 🤷😂🤣😆
Morals of the story--don't borrow bikes from Ben no matter how nice a guy he seems to be...oh, and more cyclists need to use Wheels components :)
I am definitely a use case for 'trust, but verify'. :-)
Giant's assembly is one of the worst. They even destroyed my lockring.
Unscrew the bolts of the cranks with a Torque wrench 😮??
This video hurts my heart to watch, as a mechanic for 30 years. He has the bike backwards in the stand hahaha
Why would you replace the bottom bracket if the spline to your crank wore out? It sounds like the crank needs to be replaced instead of the BB.
You are right; the crank did need to be replaced. I had just set up an appointment to tour Wheels and have Dan explain their processes when I thought it was my bottom bracket. So I just went ahead with the story anyway.
I expect one of the manufacturing advantages of the plastic BB shell is that they don’t really need grease or anti-seize on it.
Lesson learned: Never get beaten by a friend in a bicycle race on a functioning bicycle you own...Thanks Ben
what year revolt? any problems with frame cracking near seat post
2022, and no. Seatpost, yes. Frame, no.

Hambini makes great stuff but your frame isn't to the same measurements off tolerance as this frame
So the BB bearings were smooth despite the abuse but you popped them out anyway 'cause you were there to make a BB changing video? ;)
Sussy boy😏😏😏😏😏😏🔪
Yep. That’s the long and short of it.
