Fletch And Fletch Lives: Two PERFECT 80s Films?

  • 1985’s Fletch was directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Andrew Bergman. The film is an adaptation of the popular novels written by Gregory McDonald and brings a more comedic and dry approach to its titular character, Fletch, played by Chevy Chase. Fletch is an investigative journalist working the undercover beat as a homeless beach junkie as he tries to uncover the truth behind a kingpin-level drug ring that is looming over greater L.A. While undercover, Fletch is propositioned by a rich man called Alan Stanwick who claims to be dying of bone cancer to kill the man in his upper-class home so that his family can reap the benefits of his life insurance. In exchange, Fletch will receive $50,000 cash and a ticket out of the country.
Folks, when it comes to sequels, I think we can all agree that it is incredibly rare to come across a second installment to any great film that reaches the same status, quality, and audience approval as the original. Of course, there are examples of sequels that surpass their predecessors, and a case could be made for some follow-ups that course-correct a franchise and set it back on track. In any case, the fact remains that it can be tough to catch lightning in a bottle twice in a row, but that’s precisely what Michael Ritchie and Chevy Chase were able to do with 1989’s Fletch Lives which in my opinion gives you almost everything you got in the first movie and ups the stakes to biblical proportions... literally.

Chevy has made some of the funniest films ever, in the 80s...The Fletch movies, Caddyshack, Vacation, Seems Like Old Times. Later, Christmas Vacation and Funny Farm. That's why I believe he is the best screen comedian ever.

I actually may have enjoyed "Fletch Lives" more than the original. Comedy sequels are very challenging to pull off and I have to admit, I laughed quite a bit. Back in the late 1970's and 1980's, Chevy Chase was in top comedic form. Caddyshack, Vacation, Fletch, Three Amigos, Fletch Lives, and Christmas Vacation are make for guaranteed fun time.

The author of the book, naturally would have issue with Heelyweird production, as many authors don't understand the film concept, "Show it, don't tell it."

I'm with you thinking the sequel is pretty damn good. I'm not quite sure why so many dislike it so completely, except those who can't handle its political angle. I think many haven't even watched it but just want to jump on the bandwagon. But then I also don't get why so many dislike Caddyshack.

Fletch is one of the greatest Chevy Chase Comedies of all time. Unfortunately the sequel Fletch Lives squandered what made the original so great. There was supposed to be a third movie to wrap up the trilogy but given the failure of the 2nd movie the third part was prematurely cancelled.
