Rumack: Captain, how soon can you land? Captain Oveur: I can't tell. Rumack: You can tell me. I'm a doctor. Captain Oveur: No. I mean I'm just not sure. Rumack: Well, can't you take a guess? Captain Oveur: Well, not for another two hours. Rumack: You can't take a guess for another two hours?
I watched the 2nd one a couple of nights ago and enjoyed it just like I always do, do you know Ted Striker...No I don't...that's not strictly true we were like brothers ⚡
Leslie Nielsen is one of my favorite things about this movie and I really wish like hell he was still with us RIP. At one point Nielsen was actually offered the role of Admiral Benson for the Hots Shots films and turned it down before it went to Lloyd Bridges and RIP to him as well.
Eh, I like Airplane 2. Sure many jokes were rehashed, but some weren’t and they usually land. And William Shatner is hilarious in it. That Door bit is one of my favourites of either movie.
Airplane! is brilliant and one of my favorite comedies of all time. I will say this though, Airplane 2 is still a fun movie and worth a watch. The whole sequence of William Shatner commanding the moon base by itself is more reason than not to watch Airplane II.
The sequel isn't bad. Yes, it's a retread of the original film but many of the jokes are funny. I love several of the ones Shatner does, like when he appears on the video screen, then opens the door. Or when the technicians are working on the piece of equipment with lights that go back and forth but otherwise doesn't do anything else. I've seen that prop turn up in so many movies ever since Airplane II.
I wonder what the American Film Institute finds funny about, “The Graduate”. It’s an iconic movie, but I wouldn’t say it’s a funny movie by any stretch. Maybe I’ve got to rewatch it again?
The part in the sequel that had me and my cousin [around 8 yrs old] in stitches crying laughing, because we kept rewinding the clip to watch a few times, was when the tense music plays but stops when he looks around for where it's coming from.
It can be made again today if someone with the comedic chops and guts to get cancelled can pull it off. It's hard to do right with these spoof movies. But if they stick the landing it can be made cheaply and make huge money.
The Flying High bit of the original title actually became the title in parts of Europe. I don't understand all the hate for the sequel - it has lots of laughs (Shatner!) and together the two make for a great double feature.
Fun Fact: Maureen McGovern, who played the guitar-playing nun in "Airplane!", had sang the opening theme song "Different Worlds" on "Angie" starring Robert Hays and she also sang "A Morning After", a song from the 1972 film "The Poseidon Adventure" starring the late, great actor "Leslie Nielsen. Loved both "Airplane!" and "Airplane 2". 😂😂
I only saw these films a month or so ago, but I can see why they’re so great. The comedy works greatly as it’s based around visual gags and wordplay. The cast is good because they picked mostly serious actors and actresses to deliver the silliest lines, with Leslie Nielsen doing great for someone who hadn’t been in a comedy before.
In the 90's, I worked as a projectionist. I had to build Wyatt Earp. It had 9 or so reels. The next day, people would come out and say that the movie was strange. Some time into the movie, Wyatt went from a young man to an older man and then grew younger, until the final 3 reels. Turns out I built the middle three reels 6,5,4. Only 1 person figured it out. Luckily, no a lot of people went to the opening.
- You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital. - A hospital? What is it? - It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now. 😂😂😂
Fun fact: in the usual fashion of set design and Hollywood prop houses, the intercom used in Airplane II is the same intercom used in Spaceballs. And if course, the use of the laser device made from pool filters being used in almost every futuristic space movie or TV series.
A little more fact regarding Peter Graves turning down the role originally. He also felt it was too risky for him to do a comedy role. The director personally called him up and told him he specifically needed him for this role for how serious he plays his roles in his previous films.
Thanks for covering this. Not a fan of the sequel (though it does have a few good moments, notably Shatner’s entrance), but love the first one. Saw it easily 50x in the theater when it was released, because I worked in a movie theater in Boston when it was released. And have seen it at least a few more dozen times since on various platforms and formats. One of the greatest ever. And he is serious, and don’t call him Shirley. That name is already taken.
"Airplane" - cinematic genius. "Airplane II" - gets the job done. Also, always thought that "Airplane" was a spoof on John Wayne's. "The High and the Mighty" - lots of similarities. Then finally saw, "Zero Hour" and understand where the material came from (+ "Airport" as well).
Of course Airplane 2 falls short. The biggest flaw is it follows Airplane, the movie that sets the standard to which comedy is judged. It’s still hilarious and so much fun to quote. William Shatner makes the movie. That and the scene with Ted Striker fighting the “dangerous” vacuum. There are dozens of other little jokes and gags that make this great.
I still think that Airplane 2 was a great movie. Yes, it has all the beats of the original, but was just different enough, that the 12 year old me had plenty of new one-liners to trade with my friends. And Shatner was great in it!
For me I would put Top Secret! at number 1, with the Naked Gun Series in at 2nd and Airplane 1 & 2 in 3rd. I love them all though. They certainly don't make them like this anymore!!! P.S. I'd take Airplane 2 over 90% of the comedies Hollywood is pumping out these days!
I like both movies. The 2nd was pretty good considering that 99.999999% of sequels suck. Id say the 2nd is pretty decent. I laugh my ass off and tend to sometimes even wet my pants. :-P lol
"Nervous?" "Yes" "First time?" "No, I've been nervous lots of times."
That joke had me in tears!
Shatner alone makes part two worthwhile. He. is. so. damn. funny.
Blinking and Beeping and Flashing!
This movie is immensely quotable, and gets funnier with every viewing. "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley!"
“I speak jive”, “I take it black, like my men”
I watched the 2nd one a couple of nights ago and enjoyed it just like I always do, do you know Ted Striker...No I don't...that's not strictly true we were like brothers ⚡
- Can you fly this plane, and land it?
- Surely you can't be serious.
- I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
😂😂😂
Leslie Nielsen is one of my favorite things about this movie and I really wish like hell he was still with us RIP. At one point Nielsen was actually offered the role of Admiral Benson for the Hots Shots films and turned it down before it went to Lloyd Bridges and RIP to him as well.
I love them both. I didn't know ZAZ wasn't involved, but seeing same characters made me feel like home.
I love Airplane 2! It's not as great as the original, but it comes pretty close!
Wow. The idea that Caddy, Blues, and Airplane were all released working weeks of each other… what a time.
Eh, I like Airplane 2. Sure many jokes were rehashed, but some weren’t and they usually land. And William Shatner is hilarious in it. That Door bit is one of my favourites of either movie.
Yes and yes!
You'll never have another Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker in Hollywood ever again
I think society wouldn't understand that sense of amazing humour today

One of the best movies ever. Julie is a regular at the restaurant I work at… and she is as sweet and nice as one would hope.

Airplane! is still so funny. So many memorable lines and moments which are part of pop culture. Sucks it could never get made now
It can be made again today if someone with the comedic chops and guts to get cancelled can pull it off. It's hard to do right with these spoof movies. But if they stick the landing it can be made cheaply and make huge money.

Both movies are known as Flying High in Australia as well.

God I adored this movie! So, so well done
Ring the tower...we don't have a tower sir just a bridge...why am I not informed about these things ⚡

Until recently watching the 70's Airport movies, I had not realized how much Airplane spoofed those movies.
Don't call me Shirley

Happy 35th Anniversary to BATMAN 89!
How He Get Those Wonderful Toys?

😂😂😂
Julie Hagerty has amazing hair.
Airplane 2 is probably my fave just because of the Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica references .. AND .. it has Bill Shatner in it. Perfection!
Fun fact: in the usual fashion of set design and Hollywood prop houses, the intercom used in Airplane II is the same intercom used in Spaceballs.
And if course, the use of the laser device made from pool filters being used in almost every futuristic space movie or TV series.

Loyd Bridges wasn't going to do the movie but his sons both convinced him to do it 😜
Shatner singlehandedly makes Airplane 2 rewatchable.
Thanks for covering this. Not a fan of the sequel (though it does have a few good moments, notably Shatner’s entrance), but love the first one. I don't see anything topping this in my lifetime.thanks JoBlo!
Airplane 2 would be much better if you never saw Airplane, and didn't know that 85% of the gags in Airplane 2 were just repeats of Airplane gags.
Both movies were fun!!😛😛
This was good and I didn't know about zero hour!
Thank you
airplane, naked gun and hot shots...
@@fistimusmaximus6576 also Top Secret is a good watch and they did another movie called Brain Doners but that one is a bit poor 😜
It's the birth of parodies, before scary movies it's airplane
Finkleman wrote some stinker movies but his CBC sitcom "Newsroom" was genius and highly influential.
I've used the "Don't call me Shirley" line many times over the years.😅
Of course Airplane 2 falls short.
We “Some Like It Hot” fans will never die out.
Great funny movies. William Shatner is pitch perfect in part 2
In Australia it was called Flying High
It was called Flying High in Australia.
Airplane 2 is a poor imitation of the first, but it does have it's moments, Shatner is particularly funny in it
I loved it
Excuse me. I speak jive 😂
Every pilots favorite movie.
Have you ever seen a grown man naked?😂
Just about anything by Mel Brooks and/or Leslie Nielsen (Airplane onward) is peak parody cinema.
I still think that Airplane 2 was a great movie. Yes, it has all the beats of the original, but was just different enough, that the 12 year old me had plenty of new one-liners to trade with my friends. And Shatner was great in it!
The 33 1/3rd is the best one honestly
For me I would put Top Secret! at number 1, with the Naked Gun Series in at 2nd and Airplane 1 & 2 in 3rd. I love them all though. They certainly don't make them like this anymore!!! P.S. I'd take Airplane 2 over 90% of the comedies Hollywood is pumping out these days!
I thought the WGA was the World Canadian Bureau
Airplane 2 is very good.
I like both movies. The 2nd was pretty good considering that 99.999999% of sequels suck. Id say the 2nd is pretty decent. I laugh my ass off and tend to sometimes even wet my pants. :-P lol
It's an entirely different kind of comedy altogether!
It's an entirely different kind of comedy
Shirly you jest.
Nice beaver.
Thank you. I just had it stuffed.
: )
buckle your seatbells the pilot is gone (aka apertem os cintos o piloto sumiu)
Wow.
The first word of the review is "surely" but isn't followed up by a "don't call me Shirley" quip ... are you even a fan of these movies? :P
👍👍👍🎥
Did humans craft stories better before the 2000s?
Mostly yes
ZAZ
Airplane was brilliant, and it's still brilliant to watch to this day. Airplane two on the other hand belongs in the toilet.
Turn on the runway lights...no because that is exactly what they are expecting us to do 😂
