They fly similar, although the new one a bit heavier, but is easier to get balanced right with different size batteries. With some adjustments in the new ESC the throttle response is better.
I'm amazed to see it fly like that.A real precision aerobatic pattern aircraft.Im almost sold on this aircraft.I am sick of seeing 3D type flying.Thats why I fly there V900 sport plane. Its great to see an Extra fly like that, like a real plane should.

Man, i was wanting this for about a year but some extreme flight planes landed in my lap. Totally would have bought this before i transioto bigger planes!
Hi Adam, I'm finding this plane is "tail heavy" even with my 3200mah 4S 50C lipo pack moved as far forward as possible. I needed to add some dead weight to the nose to make nose dip a little at CG (104mm back from the leading edge).
You may not need the weight. Mine flies fine with the battery mostly forward (the back of my 3200 4s is even with the wood tray). The truth is the plane will fly with the battery all the way forward or all the way back...most 3D planes have a large CG range. Don't get too fixated on what it is doing on the balancer...what it does in the air is far more important, and CG is a preference, not a given. The "manual CG" is simply a starting point...you can deviate from that as you see fit based on how the plane flies and what your preferences are. You'll find this interesting - almost all foam PNP or BNF planes are tested enough so that the recommended battery in the middle of the tray nets you a flyable airplane...and that there is room for movement of the battery without getting you "in trouble". Most are a bit nose heavy on purpose. I almost never check CG on a BNF or PNP before a maiden flight. I just put the recommended pack in there, fly, test, move the pack as needed to get it to fly the way I want...and then I measure the CG so I can tell you guys where mine is.
Adam @ModelAv8RChcannel Great review!! The ESC says it can go from 3S to 6s, can this ESC /Motor / 13x6 Prop setup handle a 6S 1500mah 120C Battery (med to long term)?
Thanks man! No, 6s will burn it all up. The esc is rated for 6s voltage, but not rated for the amps you'd be pulling with that prop. With that prop, 4s makes plenty of power and the temps and amps are acceptable.
In 3D the propeller is so important. Post stall all the airflow those huge control surfaces have to work with to maintain control is the slipstream of the prop, so the larger the diameter the better. That gives you more airflow space if you will...or a wider size of airflow to expose as much airflow to the inside of those full span ailerons. With a larger prop you're typically at a lower pitch...which gives you more low end torque, which is what you want for 3D...quick response to low and mid range throttle blips in post stall flight. No need to re-invent the wheel with this one, lol. It is perfectly powered and propped for what it is. Common 4s packs, plenty of power, and a good flight time for a 3D plane. Using a smaller diameter prop on 6s would give you more speed on the top end, but less effective slipstream for 3D on the bottom.
Thanks very much! It handled that wind better than I expected. All the same rate...I hate flipping switches, Lol. You can see the control check as I taxi out.
@@ModelAV8RChannel yes, thanks Adam. A year ago that rate check page would've meant very little to me. But it all makes sense now. I don't like flipping switches either. But I do find that I can fly a little smoother with less than "Max" throws. Lol
Great video! I'm just curious here, a couple of the "Pros" at the field are telling me to use a 4S 4000 pack and add extra weight to the nose as their model flys tail heavy on inverted and 45 degree test flights... I'm far from a pro thats for certain, my initial flight was very pitch sensitive due to my elevator adjustment, after making the adjustments it flew so smooth and precise, I was thrilled with it. My initial flights I only fly a few times to get use to the plane and then re-evaluate it and take it to the field more later. I often wonder on some planes if I have it setup properly or if it could be improved upon and spend time watching videos for sure. I tend to trust your opinion and was wondering if you thought it could use or benefit from any additional weight in the nose or a heavier pack. I'm an intermediate pilot and not into 3d but enjoy doing a few 3d acros once in awhile and just basic precision flying with standard acros. Thanks.
For me, I prefer it with the 3200. I like it lighter. The only time it feels tail heavy to me is when I'm landing...the nose tends to want to come up a bit so it requires some unnatural elevator inputs. You could do a throttle to elevator mix that feeds in a very slight amount of down at idle to basically re-trim it for landing, but I just fly through it. Everywhere else it tests neutral to very slightly rear(ish) neutral in flight (inverted/45deg inverted up line). A few things to keep in mind with a 3D plane... It feeling sensitive doesn't automatically mean its tail heavy, it could just need more expo. New to 3D pilots are caught off guard by how much it can take. 60 to 75% is normal with the huge surfaces and extreme amount of throw. The other thing is that there is no perfect "set up". Its very much a matter of taste/style. You could line up 10 actual sponsored pro 3D pilots from Extreme Flight, Pilot RC, etc. and you'll see 10 different set ups. There will be some similarities of course, but there will be some big differences as well. Don't be afraid to experiment. Try a bigger pack, more expo, or whatever you want. Nothing the "pros" at your field or I tell you is gospel. What feels perfect for me or the guys at your field given our skill and comfort level...and considering what we like to do with it may not be right for you and what you're doing with it. Its great to get suggestions and try them, but there is no telling where you'll end up for you. It may be someones exact set up is perfect for you, maybe not. One thing to always keep in mind...never try more than one thing at a time. Make one change, fly it and see what that does, then try the next thing. Enjoy your 3D journey...its a learning experience for sure, and damn its fun!
Thank you for the insite and long well thought out response. I knew you would have great information and I really appreciate it. It flew fine for me with the 3300. I may try the 4000 just to see. More stick time with it first! Thanks again!
Adam, I have the Yellow scheme brand new in the box! So I don't think I will be buying this one, but I have Phoenix that I haven't bought the parts that you recommended to me for it.I have to save up for them. I like to know if you apply the Mid_Wax polyacrylic to protect your foam planes? Great flying Adam as always! PS I bet if you make a Video on what inputs you have to make to do all these kinds of maneuvers, it would be a very much watch Video IMHO! I have not idea how to and what inputs you have use to create all the different patterns. Thank you so much making this kind of Video's that you make already. 👋👍😁
Hay man! I use minwax on some planes but not all. Usually the ones I paint to seal it, or if I am looking for a specific appearance. When it come to learning 3D, check out a TH-cam channel called bonedoc1. These are older videos, but he has some excellent tutorials on 3D flying including stick inputs. I learned a lot from his channel years ago.
Hi Adam, on your transmitter control sticks, do you use "thumbs only" or are you a "pincher" with your thumb and index fingers? I'm still a "pincher" since I use to fly RC helicopters a lot.
I'm a bit of a hybrid between the two. My thumbs are on the gimbals and my index fingers are resting on the bottom front of the gimbals for stability. So not a pinch but not just thumbs either.
I use silicone based grease for hinges. Historically Vaseline in the UK is vaseline petroleum jelly which I read somewhere may possibly attack some types foam so paranoia kicks in and I play safe.😟
Interesting. For what its worth I've done it about 10 times on various foam planes, and no issues with EPO foam. Maybe EPS? I know EPS is more sensitive with CA, etc. Also worth noting...you can wipe the excess vaseline away after the glue drys. The purpose of it isn't lubrication, it is to keep the glue out of the hinge point when installing the rudder.
@@ModelAV8RChannel Yes , I use it mainly to keep glue away from the hinge also, especially if I use Gorilla glue which works well when I use the single pin type hinges in foam. I can then cut away any excess gorilla glue before it hardens off.
For me to get 96mm balance point while holding inverted, I would have to drill a hole in my Spektrum 3200ma 50c battery to allow the crankshaft to go inside the battery! Seriously, how did you get that setup without adding nose weight? I have my battery all the way forward and it balances out at 101mm or about 4in. back from the leading edge. I'm assuming your battery is also all the way forward in the compartment.
The battery is forward. The back of the battery is even with the wood tray. 96mm is the measurement I got on the balancer, but don't obsess about that. Like most 3D planes, it will fly with the battery all the way forward or all the way back. The right balance differs from pilot to pilot depending on style. Fly it and move the battery to tune the plane to do what you like to do with a 3D plane. What it does in the air is way more important than what it says on a balancer...especially with a 3D plane. And again...you can't put a 3200 4s in a place in that battery bay where it will get you in trouble...the plane is easily flyable regardless of where you put it. Start all the way forward, test, and move it back from there if you feel you need to.
@@ModelAV8RChannel Thanks for the reply. I just flew the maiden flight today in some heavy wind (12 to 19mph). I was doing vertical landings. I'll have to wait for a better day to get a feel for it but I didn't have to touch my trims at all, it just flew straight and true in spite of the wind. I tried to use your settings with the high expo but that was definitely way too much expo for me so I landed and reduced the expo right away. I understand the idea of having a tame middle for precision aerobatics and then still having the max throws, but that was too much for me. I like more sensitivity in the center. I tend to use two different rates. One for the precision aerobatics and one for more extreme maneuvers and 3D if you can call it that. Hovering is easy, it's the fast rolling harriers that do me in. I'll never forget my Carl Goldberg Extra 300. That was one sweet bird at the time. It put a smile on my face every time I flew it. Same with the CG Ultimate, I had so much fun with both of those planes it was like being in heaven. Love watching your videos so keep em coming.
Thanks for the kind words man! Yeah expo is a preference thing, set it like you like it. Keep in mind I added throw over and above the stock 100% rates by increasing servo travel and telling the AS3X to re-learn the servo settings. Interestingly now that I've updated that RX and have it tuned with AS3X+ I turned the expo down a bit...some of the things you can adjust with that create an "expo feel" so sometimes you have to turn the actual expo down to counter that. I've always hated flipping switches so I don't typically use rates...not that there is anything wrong with using them. Have fun with it man...great flying airplane!
I have another question if you don't mind. I moved my elevator out to the outer hole on the servo and inner on the elevator and now I'm getting positive oscillation feedback in the neutral position. Did you see anything like that on your setup? I had to put it back to the second hole on the servo arm. Very frustrating.
You mean oscillation at speed? Turn the pitch gain down in forward programming. I'm at the same place...outer hole on the servo arm and inner hole on the control horn. My servo travel on elevator is 138% up/dn. Anytime you add throw to any control surface...you may have to turn the gain down on that axis.
@@ModelAV8RChannel The oscillation is occurring on the ground prior to AS3X even being on. I have seen articles on this issue that solve this problem by placing some Velcro loop material between the stab and the elevator counter balance to create just enough friction at neutral to eliminate it, but of course, this plane doesn't have that option. So I'm afraid to fly it with that going on. When the linkage is setup in original configuration, there is no oscillations at neutral. I guess it could be a bad servo, but it sure looks like positive oscillations (similar to having gain to high on gyro but this is without the gyro being on). If the control surface is touched to dampen the feedback, it stops oscillating. According to the article I read on this, it is caused by too much flexibility in the whole control surface which is commonly found on 3D type planes. Edit: I think the servo is bad. I got it to oscillate even with the control arm removed from the servo. I just ordered another servo. Was looking forward to flying it this weekend as the weather is perfect. I'll have to fly my other stuff instead.
Ahh okay. When I say oscillation I'm usually talking about airborne gyro gains and on the ground at rest I say vibration...although both are correct terms. Interestingly enough I've seen people fly with them like that. I actually do with my Freewing A-4. The rudder has always done that...did the velcro trick and that stops it sometimes, but it still does it sometimes as well. The airflow does the same thing your finger does when you touch it, and on my A-4 that has been fine for about 150 flights. I've seen that on plug up with some 3D planes with a freshly charged battery, but it stops when you touch it and when the battery discharges a bit it doesn't do it again. In your case doing that with no surface attached via a pushrod...yeah servos shouldn't do that and I'd replace it too.
@@ModelAV8RChannel My new servo came in this morning and I set it up for max throws again and it is rock solid now. It was definitely a bad servo. Off to the flying field.
Hi Adam. From one husky lover to another... Any chance to contact you? Im not having much luck with my husky... And i dont think she will make it to the winter... Where woud you stick her electronics? Mind you, from 10 planes, the only airframe that had glue (4 times) is my husky. Im half embarrassed
We have a channel email in the about section of the channel. Click on "more" under the channel name. I'd just link it here, but when I do that YT won't allow the comment for some reason. Honesty, I'd keep the electronics as spares and get another Husky. If you're looking for an upgrade, the Super Timber is still my favorite (crazy capable and more convenient), but it isn't as scale looking as the Husky.
Yup the good ole grease trick for those p-hinges... today's modler's are unfortunately stymeid by the industry of plug an play.... so much you can learn from a great stick build.
Sorry to hear that. Mines great for a full bodied foam 3D plane, I'm impressed in that regard, but no foam plane will fly like an Extreme Flight balsa plane will. I've seen many expect that kind of experience with foam planes, and that isn't going to happen with any of them. I've flown Flex, FMS, and E-flite 3D planes. So far nothing foam flies as good or as precise as a really good balsa 3D plane, but to be fair they aren't intended to compete with those anyway. I personally prefer this one over the Flex Extra and Cap. Haven't flown their Laser yet. I like the easy programmability with AS3X...and I updated mine to AS3X+...that makes a significant difference. If you want to try that let me know, I'll give you my + set-up.
@ModelAV8RChannel thanks for the response. I'm just gonna sell it. I've been flying RC for 40 years. This plane acts like it's tail heavy, but it's not. It has this quirk where just as you are coming off the throttle those last few "clicks" the nose begins to pitch up. I've shown it to several of the flyers and all are baffled. It literally will go from an establish approach to a climb, all hands off. I had to program in down elevator that comes in with very low throttle. It's all set up just as the manual states. Running 4S 3200 packs, but it does it exactly the same with a 4S 2200 pack, literally no difference at all. It's a puzzle. Maybe the AS3X plus would do something, but I doubt it.
Yep. Man the first time I experienced that was about 12 years ago with a Precision Aerobatics Extra. Drove me nuts at the time so I get it. With that one it was an incidence thing. They actually did it on purpose to make the post stall characteristics better (so they said). It was only annoying when landing and I couldn't see a difference in how it performed over 3DHS and Extreme Flight planes I was flying at the time that landed normally. Strange. Lol. With this Extra it does the same thing, but not quite as bad. I did the same thing with the PA planes you did...just a little throttle to elevator mix on a switch for landing, and the inputs felt more natural. For some reason...maybe it is that I fly so many different planes now with the YT channel, but it doesn't bother me...I just compensate for it. I guess I'm happy with how a foamy performs 3D for a change (which usually isn't the case) so since it is just evident when landing I'm alright with it. Also may be that I've had a few other foam 3D planes do that too...not sure why. Anyway man...with the AS3X+ it made a difference in the 3D and XA in a positive way for me, but I like to tinker with the tuning and I have it just like I want it, much better than the stock set up I think. That said it won't improve the pitch up on landing, but your mix should sort that if you like how it does everything else.
The sound that comes off this thing is incredible

@@ModelAV8RChannelthanks! I guess there isn't much point propping down to a 12x5 for 6S... Less thrust, less speed. But more; Not sure...Torque?
@@ModelAV8RChannelgreat explanation, understood. Thank you!
Your first flight. So smooth and precise. Did you use dual rates? Or was that all simply the high expo?
@@ModelAV8RChannel thank you very much for the information Adam! You rock 😃
I would want to reduce the control throws a lot.
Hi Adam, do you recommend the 50C 3200mah 4S pack over the 30C 3200mah 4S pack for 3D flying? Thanks!
Either one will work fine. The power system is very efficient and doesn't work the packs too hard.
UMX version Horizon Hobby!
I'd like that too!
Was just thinking how good this would be!
Awesome, glad you have it sorted.
If you're looking for an upgrade, the Super Timber is still my favorite (crazy capable and more convenient), but it isn't as scale looking as the Husky.
are u gonna review some of the new flex innovations planes?
I like that new Laser they have, reminds me of an old Lanier Laser. I will probably get one when they get them back in stock.
Yup the good ole grease trick for those p-hinges... today's modler's are unfortunately stymeid by the industry of plug an play.... so much you can learn from a great stick build.
Can’t argue with that!
I'm disappointed with mine
Great video Adam, loved watching you throw this bad boy about. Really good price for the scale and looks. 🫡
Thanks Chris! very capable bird...and pretty!
