Stop misinterpreting this song willinging. It WAS NOT an anthem for that tragic disgusting disaster. And you are being disrespectful beyond belief to the victims and their families. This song was from a musical called CAROUSEL and yes became affiliated with several clubs but most notably Liverpool. If one of my kids died in that balls up of a tragedy and someone said a damn right out lie about this being their anthem I would be furious.

Gerry and the Pacemakers had a short but brilliant time at the top in the UK. They were friends and contemporaries of The Beatles. Their first three singles went to number one in the UK charts. Their original song "Ferry Across the Mersey" is worth a listen ( The Mersey is the river that flows by Liverpool ).

This beautiful and uplifting song is originally from the1945 Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway Musical, and the 1956 Movie "Carousel." It starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones as the leads in the film.
The movie version is very beautiful with a full orchestra and choir performing it.
Gerry and the Pacemakers perform this in 1960. And it became the fighting cry for Liverpool's English soccer team. It is still being sung today in stadiums throughout Europe and England. The song became one of the Pacemakers biggest hits. Awesome!

There were many successful songs in Carousel, but one in particular caught on like no other. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was recorded numerous times and became the anthem of the Liverpool Football Club. After a concert by the rock group QUEEN, the audience began to spontaneously sing the song, which helped inspire the band to create their songs “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You.” The song also became accepted as a universal hymn, and Irving Berlin once said that “You'll Never Walk Alone” had the same sort of effect on him as did the 23rd Psalm.

This is another great British group from the 60's during the Merseybeat scene. They had a lot in common with The Beatles as they both came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and were recorded by George Martin. They had a lot of great hits such as "How Do You Do It?", "I Like It", You'll Never Walk Alone", "Ferry Cross the Mersey" & "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying". Sadly the lead singer Gerry Marsden died this year.

Just a pronunciation note - the "G" in Gerry makes a "J" sound. Pronounced like "Jerry". I love this band so much and was saddened when the lead singer, Gerry Marsden, died earlier this year (2021). Their biggest hit is "Ferry Cross the Mersey", and the first time I ever went to Liverpool, I made it a point to take the Mersey Ferry just for the experience. But they have several really great songs, and that voice plus the music just shows their pure talent. Great choice to react to.

This is a song performed by 152 entertainers. Mahalia Jackson was one of the first going back 30 years before Gerry and the Pacemakers. Mahalia Jackson was a gospel singer who started in the 1930's. I first encountered her when I was about 4 or 5 years old in 1952, in some old movie on tv. She became my first favorite female singer along with Ethel Waters. Mahalia sang at the Rev. Martin Luther Kings funeral. She died in 1972. Look into her performance of this song and also "The Lord's Prayer". She is part of American history.

Common pop history forgets that Gerry & the Pacemakers had the first 'Merseybeat' No.1 in the UK BEFORE The Beatles. But the sixties were fast-paced. You snoozed, musically, and you lost. Their greatest contribution probably remains the solidarity that this song produces when sung by football fans - a world away from its roots.

Growing up in England from 1956 to '64, when my family emigrated to Canada(British Invasion, 1st wave, lol) we had the Beatles and many other terrific groups swept up in their wake, and Gerry and the Pacemakers was one of my favourites. I was also somewhat pleasantly surprised to realize that comedian Jerry Lewis sang this every year near the end of his annual Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy Research. A mixed blessing for sure, lmaoow!! A perennial emotional highlight if not-so-much a musical one. It was sometimes hard not to imagine Jerry shouting, "Hey, lady!!", or otherwise drawing on his comedic persona mid-song, shattering the enchantment, such that it was.
p.s., I never knew this was a Rodgers and Hammerstein tune, or that it was in the movie 'Carousel', thanks to your subscribers for the additional info, and personal notes; also, every last well-chosen request...they ARE good. ;>D
Thank you both, btw, for getting it. All the best in '22. D

This song was from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. One of the subjects of the musical was abuse. At the time it was written, this subject was never talked about in public and was considered taboo. They broke ground by doing what they did. I love the song and the musical. I was able to attend the musical at The Fifth Avenue Theater after my daughter died in a mass shooting. She had been abused by her boyfriend. By the time she had had enough and decided to move on, it was too late. It has been 10 years this coming April, and the words still ring true: "When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don't be afraid of the dark......"

This was originally sung in the classic musical Carousel. Great song! Elvis performed it as well.

I've always loved this song. You should watch a video of the crowd singing it at a Liverpool Football Club game, amazaing.

I loved the Johnny Maestro version of this song. First time I heard this was a school play in high school... Carousel. I then watched the movie version of the play with Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae..
