Hi Everyone and Welcome Back to My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing project.
So this video is going to be little different because I am not making a finished garment. Rather I am spending an entire video showing how I use a basic pattern to come up with a guideline of how I need to alter all pants patterns to fit my shape.
    I hope it is helpful!
    ~Marie

This is one of the best pants fitting tutorials i’ve seen. You demonstrated it very well.
I could easily follow along without ever having to wonder _what the heck is she talking about!_
Thats the best kind of tutorial in my book!
You are 100% correct. Sizes and measurements are just numbers. Commercial clothing and sewing pattern sizes are so bizarre the numbers don’t mean anything. And they’re not standard across brands! No one wants to admit they’re a size ‘whatever’ so the manufacturers have pandered to everyone’s vanity by playing with the numbers. Today’s size 16 is yesterday’s size 8. It’s ridiculous.

There was a time... when I could take a pattern, pick my size cut it out and sew it and it would fit. Not anymore. I now have a scoliosis in my lower spine so without a 'cookie' in my left shoe my left leg appears shorter than my right leg. (Too many falls, compression fractures and age have all contributed to this.)
I am encouraged by this video. My goal is to create a pattern that fits me. Sometimes... rather most times... I am impatient and get discouraged when sewing pants that fit me.
You are a very good teacher. You explain things so well.
Thank you... I am going to attempt this in the new year.

This just popped up as i was reaearchinng patterns. Ive sewn forever just my old body changed. Love your vintage machines! I have 10. I was taught to measure pattern between sewing lines like at waist between seams to compare to your own. Even in same companies ive never foound them match envelooe or pattern to pattern! And ive sewn with patterns since age 10! Im 68 now! I mostly upcycle tops. I do same. Buy big alter down.

Thank you for explaining so well . Your effort in picking a pattern for a core pattern was a good choice. you gave lots of variations at each portion of the pattern to help others understand what they may need to do for their own pattern. Thank you, thank you! You are better at teaching than most paid teachers in the school systems!

This is far and away the best video on pants fitting I’ve seen. In particular the explanation about the crotch seam was spot on for those of us who are not an average size 12 (Australian size) and look like a stick insect. I’m 5’5” and apple shaped and at 71 my chances of losing a ton of weight are slim to none. So, finding a pants pattern that fits is problematic , or at least it was until I discovered indie patterns. Although I can get patterns in larger sizes now I still have to make adjustments to the crotch and you have just made that a whole lot easier! I have a better understanding of what to change and where to do it, so thanks for that! Much appreciated, love from down under xx

    Really interesting, thank you.
I used to belong to the English Civil War Society and made all my own costumes on as little money as possible! I used to use old sheets to make the initial pattern and fit it inside out. I was then able to use this as the lining which made it warmer and no one could see if I had to add sections.

I found that the back crotch rise was always too short on my muslins. I purchased used sheets from a thrift store and started experimenting. People kept telling me that I didn’t have an ass, but when I used foil wound up to form to me, I do have an ass, but it’s lower. When I put my foil form on my pattern, I could clearly see the discrepancy. So I have to scoop more and add more to the height of the rise. My pants fit really good now.

I have personal pattern blocks that I drafted when studying fashion design at AIC; cf/cb bodice, trouser, jeans, skirt, and sleeve. But, I've lost over 12 lbs and I have to update all of them. I'm starting with the trouser and; I have to say, this video is more comprehensive then my classes. The teacher had us leave the fly open and tailor. Keeping the side open looks so much better. I actually love making trousers, but you're right that fit is more important and therefore more finicky and can be very discouraging for some people. Thanks for sharing.

making my own pants that fit would be a dream come true. I have my own odd shape. No hips and fat inner legs. menopause, belly and butt. so I'm really just afraid of making pants. All of the hype about it being so difficult, has made me put it off. I can make the heck out of a dress. But I've never tried pants. looking at numbers is a struggle for me. I'm glad you addressed that early on. they're just numbers.

I have a book from 1985 called "The Perfect fit - The unique formula for easy dressmaking" by Eva Howarth (and I've had it since it was first published - Goodness me, it's practically vintage!) Your method here reminds me a bit of hers, but yours looks easier. Her method has you start with making a toile of the pattern company's basic pattern. I'm not sure pattern companies even offer their basic pattern anymore (it could well be too close to their "proprietary" information!) and even when they did, I don't remember seeing one for pants, only a dress. I'm looking forward to seeing how these pants work out. (But to be honest - these are looking pretty nice on you already.)
As a request for a possible future video (if you're still looking for suggestions at all) I'd love to know how to retro-create-and-instal a lining to the knee for men's trousers please. My hubby finds them really comfortable but they are so hard to find. I'm presuming it can't be that hard - but haven't a clue how to do it. :-)

In the costume shop I work at, we just refer to that second area as the "lower hip" and always make sure to take that measurement as well.

Very helpful, understandable and comprehensive tutorial. Do any of the modifications shown impact the grainline or the drape of the fabric?

The grainline should stay in place :)

Thank you, Marie! Your attention to detail & way of breaking it all down so it's understandable is great. I will definitely be purchasing this pattern (next time they're on sale (& making a basic sloper as I think it'll be very helpful when making other pants patterns.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 & Happy New Year to you and your family.

Try Burda patterns - they have an entirely different crotch shape which is much more flattering for people with a tummy. The back crotch is longer preventing the pull under the tummy. They are also shaped to provide more sitting room under the bottom. It is a European shape which also helps to prevent “smile lines” on the pants front just at the thigh line. Aside from my comments about the pattern brand, this is an excellent instructional video and about the clearest I have come accross! Thank you so much!

Does Burda have a basic pattern like this for wovens?

@@ninadukette3340 Burda has a full range of pant styles. Depending on the pattern, you may have to add your own seam allowance. However, I think they include seam allowances for the U.S. market.

really appreciate your honesty in all of this! am finding my Back pieces need to be quite a lot larger than the front pieces, as well as a quick /short distance from waist, to high hip bump. I'm using a pair of worn out pants which were favorites as my pattern. It's a journey.....

I really enjoyed the video. This is a great way to fit. Question: I think I remember reading an article by Robert Carr who suggested using something in the seam allowances in the "two hips" area to make that area fall straighter. It was many many years ago. I never tried it. ?? Merry Christmas

Hi. I’ve been watching for a long time. I’ve learned a lot. I’m requesting a video on presser feet. I have bought many from estate sales. I don’t know what they all do or even if they will fit my machine. You said something about a walking foot and I have no idea what that is. Thank you.

Excellent tutorial, I’m a tailor and could use some of your tips for myself. I’m planning on making some pants from an old pair I have. Those old machines at the beginning of the video, were beautiful. Wow, are they functional? Thank you for the info ❤👍❗️

I have always been afraid to try to sew pants, except for children's. Thanks for this tutorial. My problem is with tops and blouses- the neck and shoulders are always too large if I cut it per measurements/size. I would like some pointers on that sometime if possible. I really enjoy your videos, and your beautiful sewing machines. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Awesome tutorial. Thank you so much. Could you try a pattern with a flat front and elastic back? I have a crazy body size I’m a rectangle shape just about all my measurements are alike. That kind of pant fits me best. Thanks again so much good information

Very detailed and clear, but I was hoping to see an explanation for adjusting the crotch seam curve. I have always found that is the most challenging to get right to eliminate wrinkling, pulling, or bubbles in the fabric across the area over the pubic part of the crotch. Do you have a video on fitting that area? Love your little song and pictures of your farm life. From vert tropical far North Queensland in Australia where we are having a heatwave that has lasted over a week and not easing. For Christmas we had a cyclone and extreme flooding. 🙂

Question. When you put the wedge in the back seam to lengthen the back, the side seam swung outward. Would this increase the size of the waistline?

    • @mybucoliclife
      @mybucoliclife  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nope, the pattern at the waist stays the same size, it's just positioned a little differently

When it comes to ready made patterns for pants add one and half inch to the back and one inch at front waistband. For dresses etc add half an inch extra and then cut yr fabric. Rather be extra than less....adjust to yr fit... Mark and pin.... Ask me how I know😂
