Thank you for using a larger mannequin. I am learning to sew for myself because my body is 3 sizes - shoulder, waist and hips, and I need to stay positive and believing I can look good if I fit to my body. This is the best thing you could give me! Thanks!

I am now 64 and getting back into sewing. I am no longer (sadly) able to buy a pattern, cut it out on fabric, sew and wear with no adjustments or very small tweaks. I'm sure it was also different the way patterns were made in the 70's. This has been extremely informative to my now post menopause figure (ugh) and has helped me to understand adjustments a little better. With a brand new sewing machine and a gifted (old but goodie) serger I am determined to make clothes to fit ME. Excellent tutorial, well explained in a calm manner, no distracting music and straight, to the point simple explanation and demonstration. Bonus is free patterns which is where I'm heading now......

    • @solarwinds-
      @solarwinds- ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi BritClips, don't feel bad. I don't think it's your figure, I think you're more sophisticated now and you SEE the fitting problems where as your more inexperienced self didn't. I'll bet dollars to donuts that is the case. That's the way it was with me. I thought my clothes fit great but they didn't, I just didn't know any better.

    • @carolg.6838

BritClips, I am also 64. Our body changes as we get older. In my case I also got heavy. Even if I uses different sizes for top, middle, bottom, I would need adjustments for my shape. The much younger me needed few adjustments. I hope to learn a lot from these videos. Also check out Nancy Zieman fitting video and book. She was a gem, passed away some years ago.

Wonderful class ! You are a good teacher and I look forward to trying your patterns. I would like to add it was so refreshing to see models who were not straight up and down. Real people who have very hard fitting problems and cannot buy ready to wear that doesn’t look like tents on them. Thank you for your kindness to include those of us who are not small, slim and perfectly proportioned. Some of us need more than height adjustments or just a little more room in certain places. Fitting adjustments have been such a nightmare for some of us. Again thank you so much. Blessings to you and your business. ❤️

Due to the ridiculous ease built into the BIG 4 patterns, i always compare my measurement (plus my desired ease) to the pattern final measurement to know how to proceed with the horizontal or volume adjustments. The fact that my unique figure is also an A or TRIANGLE does not help me with commercial patterns. I am size 12 @ the Bust, 16 @ the waist and 22 @ the Hip……Pattern adjustment for me be frustrating at times (I have lots of adjustment to make as you can imagine including SBA and back-waist-lenght and sloped shoulder) but, most rewarding when everything comes nicely together. I am also discovering and understanding my body better with every pattern adjustment

I’ve just started learning to sew because I’ve had a double mastectomy with no reconstruction and my cancer medications have put me into menopause so my belly has grown dramatically. I’ve also always been very bottom and hip heavy so I literally can’t find any clothing or patterns to fit me. All of the plus sized options are intended for a very large bust and I have none. This is going to be so helpful and in all my searching this is the only I’ve found that explains how to do this! Thank you!!!!!

  • @rollergirl55

Hi, thanks for sharing your expertise in making adjustments on commercial sewing patterns. I use patterns from the major sewing companies. Those patterns do not state the measurements for high bust, high hip, biceps and other measurements that you used in your adjustments.
QUESTION: Which commercial patterns did you use that listed these body measurements? I’ve never seen these measurements on any of the sewing patterns I’ve used in the past. I’ve been sewing garments for myself for 56 years. When I grew to my stable size, I was a size 12 according to patterns and never had to make adjustments. Now that I am a senior who had a child, I am substantially larger and patterns do not fit my body. I wish I had learned how to make adjustments years ago! I read a few books on doing it but it seemed so complicated I didn’t attempt doing it. Your video made doing adjustments so much simpler than reading a book. From Canada, 🇨🇦🦫🍁👍

Iam so thrilled to have found this video, thank you so much, I have been making clothes all my life ( I am 74 yrs old) but never knew anything about this method, have always just sewn whatever the pattern was. I am 5' 5" so thats a good thing, but as for the circumferences of my shape, that is a whole different story. I am expecting a gorgeous new pattern from UK shortly and now feel confident to make a few adjustments to make sure it fits me properly. I also will purchase some very cheap cotton to make my first garment with just like you advised. I will let you know how I go, but I am excited to give it a try....

Terrific ❣ Thank you so much. I will try this with a basic shift pattern that I have had for centuries but was afraid to cut the pattern because I have a big variations in my body size. Yet I am celebrating because I have trimmed down my waist 5 inches from my waist. Really thank you.

Hello. My height adjust is .5 inch less than your patterns. Is it significant enough to make that adjustment? In the end, it is an 1/8 in increase.

Thank you! I will give this a try. You made it sound very easy. My tops are usually needing small adjustments but the bottoms need vavavoom adjustments and it is difficult to smooth them out. Lol

Jessica, thank you so much, this is amazing info, easy to follow and usable for every pattern. I agree with Zayaxa, even though I am 'only' 5'10", that nothing fits coming from a store. I have doing my clothes for a while now, but still consider myself a beginner. I wish I would find some other sewing enthusiasts in my area to built up my knowledge and expertise. You are a fantastic teacher and really stand out from others who just 'assume' you already know a lot of stuff and just brush over it.

BRILLIANT!! This is the VERY BEST Tutorial that I've ever seen on TH-cam!! I will not only be using your tutorial, but I'll also be sharing it with friends who I know also enjoy sewing. I can also see how useful this will be for alterations on clothes that don't fit me as well as they should. They have been sitting in a crate just waiting for me to get started, but your tutorial will also be of great assistance for me to get the correct measurements. I bought a roll of a type of thin muslin to use when I attempted to recover a couple of chairs. So, the chairs remain uncovered, but I now have the perfect fabric to make a muslin. I can"t wait to try this now, and I expect you have a great many people who love your classes and patterns. Thank you very much for such a fabulous tutorial.

Hey Jessica! This was just what I was looking for! I´m new to sewing, want to start with a pair of trousers and found out that I have at least three sizes. I hope I can use my new skills fort that too. Also - you do a great job to explaining - even for me as Swedish :) Thank you so much!

Just beware that your measurements don’t relate to the measurements on big 4 patterns. Independent pattern companies that sell pdf patterns use your measurements.

Another option for muslin fabric - A good friend is a fabric artist. I collect my scrapes and donate them to her fabric artist collective.

This is such a fabulous class. I've had a hard time grading sizes because my rectangular shape makes the pattern look straight with no curves. Your tutorial has made be okay with my lack of curves and that if that's the adjustment I need its going to fit better. However, I would make one suggestion. The next time you show pattern tutorials would you please put the pattern against a contrasting background/table? The white on white makes it a bit difficult to see. Otherwise keep up the good work!

My first t-shirt was the ABBT. The best instructions! The size chart so easy to understand. I have 3 so far. The first 2 were a very stretchy knit and did not need to add ease in the upper arm. On my last was a thicker and not as stretchy fabric and I made the alteration. I did add 3” for my height all in the middle, I will redraft and space it in 2 sections. I was lucky I used fabric I liked but it was very inexpensive as I thought they would not fit. I wear them all! The neckline options are great for everyone! 100% recommend this pattern for anyone wanting to make a t-shirt that fits the way you want it to. Great video!
