@Jemma - I was 13 when Back to the Future came out … and we essentially had this song as the summer song of the year. When I realized what you were about to do, I was so excited, and so scared at you “touching” such a sacred piece of history. Frankly, you did REALLY well! It brought a completely different feel - and like the producer said, I was a little doubtful that you’d never heard it. Overall, you rocked it!

I'm hearing more of a "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips" vibe. Also, anyone reading this: this song is a great example of parallel major & minor, where root note stays the same but the third of the chord moves up or down to make it major/minor. Always cool to hear.
This is a BRILLIANT conceptual take on "reaction" videos. It's a great way to illustrate not only the listening and playing skills of true pros but a great illustration of how melodies can meld into different keys and chord progressions.
I realized how old I'm getting because of this. I'm not sure how old this musician is, but I'm going to guess 20-something. She's not even old enough for that experience. Anyway, I really hope she dug this song and seeks out more of Huey Lewis and The News. They really are/were one of the best rock bands of all time.
Just a melodic vocal line and nothing else? Wow! On the spot-composing. 3:32 - The chord progression she came up with for the chorus is actually completely successful. Love it. The degree of difficulty she was confronted with is SO much greater than the drums and bass versions of this challenge I’ve seen, where they just mute the particular instrument the musician plays, but still have all the basic harmonic information. Added to this how relatively static the melody is (songs with more melodic movement would give you much more harmonic information in the melody alone), and she really was marooned at sea with no map and asked to find her way home.

With all my years as a musician. And hundreds of thousands of songs I've experienced, maybe even more, maybe Millions. I still discover new music all the time. Some newer stuff that just slipped by me. And sometimes tracks that pre-date me. With my broad taste in music, it would take several lifetimes to discover everything I would like. I'm just thrilled that she's discovering it now. And it sounded like she was pretty close to the original chord progression right from the jump. I would love to hear her play around with some of Stevie Winwood's or Stevie Wonder's stuff. The two greatest "Stevies" lol. I think she is great. It was impressive, and I even enjoyed listening to her for just the few moments that she was playing around with that synh witch I'm not positive, but I think was a "Moag"...
I've been a Huey Lewis and the New fan since they came out in the 80's. I've seen them many many times in concert. I'm sad he can no longer perform because of his hearing. I loved her interpretation!! It was fantastic. I don't think she needs to worry about not exactly matching what they did. Loved her solo. It was all great.
Huey Lewis is.one.of the greatest of the 80s. I remember meeting him at a show in SF. My brother was a special guest that night and got up to do a couple of songs. I was around 12 years in 1986. Gemma, Great job. That's a tough song even knowing it. You've got a great ear. I play but don't know any theory and can't read music so it's impressive to see you when you're like "oh there's a dominate". So cool.
I loved her choices! This exercise immediately brought me back to when I was a teenager in a Barbershop Chorus with my grandfather. One of the exercises we would do was called "woodshedding". The only person who had music was the Lead, and we had to build Barbershop-style harmonies around it. While it was definitely challenging, I have to say we had it easier because the Barbershop style has specific chord structures, whereas Jemma had no such constraints. She did amazing! That is the kind of alternative arrangement that I LOVE hearing in remakes of songs.
Jemma is one of my favorite young keyboard players. Her transcription playing Cory Henry's Lingus solo note for note while her cat is jumping around on her lap is amazing! Fun to see she has never heard "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis. 🎹❤
Awesome version of Power of Love with your chords, Jemma! Huey Lewis and the News are from the San Francisco Bay Area where I live and you smashed it with their style! As a fellow keyboardist, really impressed at what you came up with no chords given. Kudos! 🎹👏
Wow - Jemma you did a great job - loved the keyboard solo too. Huey Lewis and the News (with the Tower of Power horns) was my first concert - amazing show and they really know how to write amazing pop hooks, songs and in particular lyrics. A deeply under-rated band in this day-and-age.
Holy crap, these changes are very clever only hearing a melody. Solid Gen X here and I know the dialogue from back to the future about as well as any movie and this song is permanently etched into my brain - but this is real pro work. Love it.

How has any musician never heard Huey Lewis and the News?
Too young
She's young, bro. Too bad. You're irrelevant.
Um…did she say that ?? I’m pretty sure She just said she didn’t know this song. That ain’t the same as never having heard of the band
Please continue to do this series! It’s amazing and please have Jemma back.
The News is such a talented group of musicians. Everyone should check out 'Four Chords & Several Years Ago' by Huey Lewis & The News.
I love the original song, but Jemma’s version was really good! I really enjoyed this!
🔥🔥🔥. As a fan of the original, I feel like this was awesome. I’d buy the single. 😍🔥🔥🔥
That solo was incredible!!!!!!!!!! I could listen to 4:33 over and over and over again. Sensational!!!
Someone needs to get this to Huey's people and let him hear it. I bet he'd love it.
So cool.
Wow. Just so privileged to hear you break down this song. So talented.
that's freakin' awesome, still wondering how didn't she knows this, but damn it what a talent here! amazing
She did great! Would love to hear more crazy chords
She's amazing! Stay tuned for this week's release, it also features Jemma🔥
Awesome version of Power of Love with your chords, Jemma! Huey Lewis and the News are from the San Francisco Bay Area where I live and you smashed it with their style! As a fellow keyboardist, really impressed at what you came up with no chords given. Kudos! 🎹👏
Whatta beautiful, insanely talented woman
Jemma..
You did fantastic. Its one of my favourites from way back when.❤loved it.
I liked everything she plaid! Nice job. I've covered this song I don't know how many times over my career. I love all of Huey Lewis's material.
I already followed her on Insta and was not even aware of her identity, just enjoyed watching her and drop those wonderful chops! Amazing.
She is so darn good, just WOW.
Love it.
What an incredible ear! Well done ma’am. You should totally check out Huey’s albums!
