Yep. Whole band is tight. I’ve played in bands and played live. I’ve never heard a tighter band than HLN. Not once. Not even close. The whole band is the epitome of musicianship
I learned a lot from this interview reading between the lines. Huey is super humble. He was an academic "prodigy" like Dave said but Huey downplayed it. Sounds like he got a full ride to an elite prep school. Scored high enough on the SAT at 15 to start Cornell at 16 but went on his own to Europe. His favorite country was Yugoslavia, which is an unusual choice showing some depth. On top of that, it was a Communist country at the time. So, somehow, at 15 or 16, he got into a country that required a very difficult-to-obtain visa. So now I'm thinking he was so brilliant that somehow his trip was grant funded, perhaps by the State Department or some organization. Then, he says he was an "average" pitcher in high school when Dave asked him about being a good baseball player. Now, I know he's being humble and he probably excelled. So, basically, Huey Lewis was a creative and academic genius and an incredible athlete and music superstar. In other words, he was a renaissance man and all-around stud.
I had the pleasure of meeting Huey when I worked the Great Chefs Of Marin benefit in NorCal years ago, a benefit very close to his heart. I shook his hand, which was warm (🥰), and was lucky to hear him sing with the featured band that night, during a period when he was well enough to hear the music... Love U, Huey ❤
Holy crap, I had no idea what a cool dude Huey is to just chat with. Heckuva interesting route with math scores, prep school, and then being told by his dad to hitchhike through Europe.
Not only a great early performance of a highly talented band but a wonderful genuine interview. How can you not love and be totally impressed by Huey Lewis?

For my personal tastes, this is the most talented band I have seen in my lifetime. Real musicians who write, sing, and play their own music. Just true, raw talent! They will always be my absolute favorites!
@@motorcitymanman7711 I disagree. I am quite familiar with The Who. I just don't care for them near as much. "Better" is subjective. As I said at the beginning, my thoughts on this are according to "my personal tastes". You have yours and I have mine. They don't have to be the same. If everyone's were the same we wouldn't have such a wide variety of music styles to enjoy.
@@pickenshair2511 To say Huey is more talented than "The Who" is just ridiculous, thats not debatable at all. To say Huey is your "personal" favorite is different, that's an opinion.......but it's FACT that The Who has more talent at every position AND songwriting. But I like Huey too.

We really enjoyed reflecting on the good ol' days when we played Battle of the Bands in our old school bands. Such GREAT HUMANS. Thanks you H L N> FUTURE HALL OF FAMERS. WE LOVE YOU !!
I have been a diehard fan of HLN since the beginning. I was lucky enough to see them 15 times live before Huey's hearing loss. Watching this again always shows me why I fell in love with them. Huey is just a normal, nice guy. Everyone says it. And they were and still are friends and brothers. I love that. Plus they are adorable together. I miss them. I just hope and pray for their continued health and happiness. Dave and Huey should get together again. They both live in Montana and Jimmy Kimmel is a friend. Oh and Huey needs to write a book on his amazing life! 💜
THEY comped us in to one of their last shows. (The Live Wire, Scottsdale AZ). It was like a Family Reunion. My Twin bro and I knew them from way back in 1968 when they would come to see US play. LOL. Such a great Era. They are total gentlemen who LOVE TO ROCK THE HOUSE.
@@danstephensen9032 That is so awesome!! I got to meet Huey briefly at an event in NYC and got a picture with him. I always wanted to meet all of the band.
As a lifelong Tower of Power fan, bandleader Emilio Castillo credits Huey for saving the bands career when they were in very dark times. Huey took ToP's horn section on the road as the backing horns. All around stand-up guy.
I worked security at a large concert venue during the mid 80’s. Saw every large venue band for over 5 years. I saw them all. By far, the best show I ever saw was HL & the News with the Tower of Power.
Agreed.....it's all production now; eye candy; special effects; auto tune; backing tracks.....must have been great to be in that band back in the day. Sorry to know he's lost most of his hearing.....the price of a lot of band members, me too.....
"Very rare today." It might seem that way sometimes, but that's just not true. There are plenty of bands out there doing it for real. Don't buy into the trap of believing there are no real musicians any more.
@@CaptainRonAhoy - No, it's not all eye candy, special effects, Auto Tune, and backing tracks now. Sure, a lot of acts work that way. But there are also a lot that don't work that way. Sorry about your hearing. I've also lost some of mine.
Im 35 and i'm just discovering Huey Lewis and the News, I guess i was born just a tiny bit too late and i missed them while growing up in the 90s. It's amazing to me that such a famous, great and fun rock band somehow could have kept such a relatively low profile in the 90's and forward. I don't really know what happened there but i'm glad i'm discovering them now!
I was lucky to be just starting to buy music (on vinyl or cassette!) at age 10 when Fore! came out. Back to the Future was the big movie event of the year (also featuring their music, of course). And Back to the Future would have been a nostalgia hit for my parents' generation growing up in the 1950s. I'm glad great music is spanning the generations. :) Huey and co. seem to be really modest about their abilities, but really they are excellent musicians.
So what happened was their music was just too fun . When Grunge came , music that was fun was not hyped by music labels or critics. So, instead, we got a bunch of guys wearing flannel and trying to be moody and distant
@@hermixtonen And many of those "grunge stars" are dead, often from drugs and suicide. Hated the nineties, a depressing decade. Glad that scene is gone....
Started with an all-vocal doo wop, everyone singing and in harmony, then laid down a super-tight live track with extra hits, an extended solo that built like crazy, had awesome energy. Three distinct guitar parts, B3 organ, aux percussion, sax… what a band!
I grew up next to Alpine Valley on Wisconsin..It holds about 65,000 people..When Huey Lewis and the News played there it was always the longest lines of traffic and most people ever for a concert there..These guys were the '80's.
I was into metal and punk as a kid, and didn’t pay much attention to bands like this when they were on steady rotation on MTV, but now that I’ve aged (a bit), looking back, man! These guys were great! Such a talented and fun band!
Funny that you said that because I also was into metal and punk back then when MTV came out. I like Huey and the band, but they seemed to me to be the type of music of my dad's era such as the "American Graffiti" movie days. I was quite surprised at how popular they became because the music was different, but they great musicians and Huey is a great song writer.
Huey Lewis and the News has been my favorite band ever since I can remember! I was fortunate enough to meet Huey, Sean, Johnny, and Bill, along with Stef Burns, their current guitar player, and Rob Sudduth! Huey even sent me a signed birthday card for my birthday one year, and it's definitely one of my most prized possessions! These guys are truly talented, kind people and I genuinely hope they can get back on tour again soon!
I Saw them when they opened for Heart on their "Private Auditions" Tour. They got booed at first. Then their guitar player and sax started to rock and by the end, they got a standing ovation.
Bought everything I could in Ireland in the 80s up to today from Huey and the News. Saw them when they made it to Ireland 🇮🇪. Best shows I've seen and this is 2022!
Around 10 years ago Huey was playing at an outdoor party at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. I had the pleasure of hanging out with him and helping him with whatever he needed. He was the most down to earth, friendly, normal guys I have ever met in my line of work. If every “celebrity” or “star” could be 1/2 of what he is…
Not many bands could pull this off live at this level. This style of music leaves no place to hide if you're not this tight. Wow. Letterman's band looked like they had a great time too!
Always loved Huey Lewis and The News !...my girlfriend was born in Yugoslavia, and says it`s one of the most beautiful places on earth, Huey agrees too !...also when Huey was on The King of Queens, he mentions Ottawa Canada, and that`s where I was born ! Funny...
My Band opened for them in Virginia Beach at a festival.... I was shocked at just how tall he is.... he's a huge dude. I am 6' 4: and 200 and he made me look like a kid. Really nice guy, the whole band were total pros and nice and easy to talk with. Good Times :) Really great dude
One of my fave groups of all-time; they are such a treat in concert. Met Huey when he was on Broadway in CABARET on my birthday and got his autograph. Top of the bucket list.
Saw them twice at Hammersmith Odeon in 86 - was working as a steward - was sooo good - i stayed til the end both nights - was an absolutely fantastic show. Got the plectrum of Chris Hayes the Kid - still have it to this day
If ever there was a guy whose talent was not tapped to its full potential, it was Huey Lewis. He was so photogenic and should have been a bigger presence on the big screen than simply a bit part in Back to the Future and his music videos. He could've been a great actor. He probably didn't care about it. Knowing him, his one love was the music.
There are not many in music that have been called a math prodigy and I sure hope Huey can get the newest hearing implant because he can still sing his heart out , we need people like him because his music is still the greatest
@@RadagastBrown420 Yes they do belong in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. They were a top band in their time and have toured around the world for decades. They had a unique sound and made original music. Multiple hit albums; every one great. Also, they're good people.
Huey comes off really low profile, but modesty apart, he and the News are one of the best of all time. He has so many hits and good songs its ridiculous!
A fan from way back also. I loved these guys and their music has stayed in my player for what... 30yrs? Timeless good rock music. Why aren't they listed in the RnR Hall of Fame? Get them there! We are losing too many of our greats without due recognition.
Love Huey Lewis ...as luck enough to see them a few years ago here in the Martimes (Moncton, NB) ....used to listen to FORE! all the time when the cassette came out..... David Letterman had the greatest guests....
Saw them in Montreal back in ‘86 on main stage of a late summer festival at John Paul II Park (Jarry Park); just an outstanding live performance in concert, Jacob’s Ladder, rocked it out of the ballpark; can still hear the crowd roaring with appreciation of the musicianship by Huey Lewis & the News; thanks for posting and sharing this video of them spreading joy to a NYC Letterman audience and ultimately to all us on TH-cam.
Went to a business conference at Disney World in the mid-90s at the Swan Hotel. They hired Huey Lewis and the News as the entertainment for the first night of the conference, got to see him up close at the stage with about 100 -200 people in attendence outside near the pool, many of whom didn't know a single song. I kept yelling for "A Couple Days Off" after every few songs, I think that was the last album (Hard at Play) they had released before this concert. So they come out for the encore and Huey's saying what great new ballad they had to play and I'm yelling "A Couple Days Off" like an idiot, he takes the mic and puts it in front of my face and asks what song do you want to hear next, so of course I say "A Couple Days Off" and he says "So you wanna rock!" and the small crowd starts cheering - he cranks out the tune, had a few people from the audience up on stage singing "COUPLE DAYS OFF" at the appropriate time in the song .... great time!
Huey and Johnny (sax) are truly gentlemen who know The Business and HOW TO ENTERTAIN to the FULLEST. I've known them from back in the late 60's when we would go to see each other's bands play, opening for each other. GREAT TIMES.
Before artists could hide behind autotune and special effects, pure talent couldn't be more obvious. Grew up on them. Couple years after their prime, but lucky to see several concerts!
In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!
Always great to see Huey & the boys performing during their prime which I would say was from 1984 -1994. Also great to see them perform “Naturally”. Not too many Rock bands can match these guys when it comes to singing harmonies.
So glad I got to see them just a couple of months after this was shot. Saw them one more time a couple of years ago before Huey's hearing issues became a show stopper. Great music.
Some of the first music I listened to when I was 8-9 years old was given to me by a good family friend, he was a huge Huey Lewis fan. Gave me a new copy of Sports on cassette, along with a copy on a blank cassette of Fore and Small World. Been loving this band ever since 1989 or so, even though I was a few years too young to appreciate them when they first came out. Seen them live a couple times, and man can those guys play and sing. They put on one hell of a live show, 20 years later, then almost 30 years later.
Always been a huge fan! My mom had the hots for Huey lol. He was once a guest on a syndicated radio show called The Don & Mike Show. They had an obsession with American Psycho so they brought Huey on. They took calls and I got through. I could barely contain my laughter when I told Huey my mom had the steamin' undies for him! 😂

I have loved HLN since I was a teenager and have met them a couple of times. They are such nice guys and always had time for their fans. I sat in a bar with Sean and chewed the cud with him for a couple of hours talking about Hammond organs, synthesisers, Stan Getz and all sorts. He even invited me backstage before the next show and showed me round his rig. Happy days.
So sad, because of his hearing condition, his career and that of his band was cut short and he can't sing today. This timeless sound and his singing could've gone on forever!

They were the tightest band in their day. Hall of Fame , please
I miss this era. Life was awesome
Helluva Dad!

Might want to check out a band called THE WHO, they did everything u just said just better and dozens of better songs.

To say Huey is more talented than "The Who" is just ridiculous, thats not debatable at all.
To say Huey is your "personal" favorite is different, that's an opinion.......but it's FACT that The Who has more talent at every position AND songwriting.
But I like Huey too.
@@motorcitymanman7711 lol On the contrary: it is very much debatable. What do you think we are doing this very moment? You can't just call your opinion a fact no matter how strongly you believe it. Huey is a more talented vocalist than Roger Daltrey with a 6 octive range?? 🤣
Huey has a better Bassist than "Thunder Fingers" John Entwistle?? 🤣🤣🤣
Huey wrote better songs than Pete Townshend!!?? How many Rock operas did Huey write?? 🤣🤣🤣

U can say u like Huey BETTER but to say they r the most talented band EVER means u haven't paid attention to many bands!
I don't recall ever seeing anything live from these guys, but wow. His voice is like studio cut quality damn near every line.
I saw Huey, while hiking on Mt. Tam, in Mill Valley, CA, back in the 80's- (he ran by me). The Bay Area was a cool place to be back then.
He has a house on Tiburon island by Sausalito. His Ex lives there last I heard. He was
a great neighbor I hear from a guitarist buddy of mine who lived there years back.
I was able to catch up with Huey and Johnny after one of their final shows in Scottsdale a few years ago.
We really enjoyed reflecting on the good ol' days when we played Battle of the Bands in our
old school bands. Such GREAT HUMANS. Thanks you H L N> FUTURE HALL OF FAMERS. WE LOVE YOU !!
@@danstephensen9032 Steve McQueen also had a house on Tiburon Island.
I was lucky to catch that tour in Louisiana.....TOP horns were great addition to The News.......
I worked security at a large concert venue during the mid 80’s. Saw every large venue band for over 5 years. I saw them all. By far, the best show I ever saw was HL & the News with the Tower of Power.
@@mikeflanagan6521 That had to kick mama's ass.
Have loved both groups for a long time (the 80s were it) and only just found this out.
Pretty exciting for a tenor sax player....
I saw that tour when they played Henry Leavitt Arena in Wichita! ToP was great backing the band.
Met all of them, a few times. Seen them in concert 25 times, at least. Once three nights back to back.

"Very rare today." It might seem that way sometimes, but that's just not true. There are plenty of bands out there doing it for real. Don't buy into the trap of believing there are no real musicians any more.

Huey was 36 in this video!
I was 20 going on 21 in a few months when this aired....time flies
Started with an all-vocal doo wop, everyone singing and in harmony, then laid down a super-tight live track with extra hits, an extended solo that built like crazy, had awesome energy. Three distinct guitar parts, B3 organ, aux percussion, sax… what a band!
I grew up next to Alpine Valley on Wisconsin..It holds about 65,000 people..When Huey Lewis and the News played there it was always the longest lines of traffic and most people ever for a concert there..These guys were the '80's.
I saw Supertramp there in 1983, the last tour for Roger Hodgson.
@@harveywallbanger6258 They were huge in '83! I was only 8 then but I remember all the concerts there.
Johnny Colla hitting those altissimo notes on the tenor sax. Outstanding!
I Saw them when they opened for Heart on their "Private Auditions" Tour. They got booed at first. Then their guitar player and sax started to rock and by the end, they got a standing ovation.
These guys were perfect EVERYTIME.
These guys should be in the hall of fame awesome band
Ohhh... them were the days. Wish I could live them over again.
If every “celebrity” or “star” could be 1/2 of what he is…
I’m a drummer and I have to say I’ve never seen cymbals so high!! 😂. Love the band. I grew up during their reign. 👍

Not many bands could pull this off live at this level. This style of music leaves no place to hide if you're not this tight. Wow. Letterman's band looked like they had a great time too!
My favorite band ever, seem them live many times since 1987. Good music like this just isn't around anymore.

Unbelievable talent, no auto tune. Humble decent guy. Hard to find that in this day and age
The blending of Huey’s band and Paul’s band was magical. Had to listen twice.
Ok, so for me, I wasn't sure about Huey Lewis UNTIL he played Billy Flynn live on Broadway in Chicago. Man SERIOUSLY has a set of pipes on him. 👍👏❤️

One of my fave groups of all-time; they are such a treat in concert. Met Huey when he was on Broadway in CABARET on my birthday and got his autograph. Top of the bucket list.
Huey Lewis' former band, Clover, was the backing band on Elvis Costello's first album, My Aim Is True.
Huey is a legend. Saw him in Tokyo once and was just an excellent show circa 2000-01. Incredible energy and combo with band. Humble guy. Respect.
First concert I ever saw was Huey Lewis & The News in 1988, with the Tower of Power horns and several 49ers on backing vocals...
I can visualize what that concert must have been like (esp. with the TOP) - kickass is probably an understatement!

Saw em live in the Columbia Gorge about 10yrs ago...loved it! And they played "Jacobs Ladder" which i hardly ever hear anymore. Just great Live music!
There are not many in music that have been called a math prodigy and I sure hope Huey can get the newest hearing implant because he can still sing his heart out , we need people like him because his music is still the greatest

Exactly. We don t know who is actually singing now. A real singer or a computarized voice of someone who pretends to be singing
Hey, Paul!
Amazingly smooth and awesome - one hyper talented, truly soulful group!

Always great to see Huey & the boys performing during their prime which I would say was from 1984 -1994. Also great to see them perform “Naturally”. Not too many Rock bands can match these guys when it comes to singing harmonies.
