i'll have you know i specifically read this book for this video (to be clear, i already owned it, just hadn't read it yet) so i knew there was no way the Hail Mary could make the trip quickly. maybe if it was fully automated and they could accelerate beyond 1.5g, but there's that human component, complicating things again! (not that it could ever break light speed). overall enjoyed the book and found it a pleasant and quick read (despite the mathy bits, which my brain just had to gloss over). i'd suggest Dune's Guild Heighliners, though i'm not sure there's enough information about their speed and propulsion systems (which use the in-universe macguffin "The Holtzman effect" to "fold space") to draw any useful conclusions. there's also the wormhole ship from Peter Hamilton's Judas Unchained.
Space Battleship Yamato. Can't remember the details off the top of my head, but I think that in season 1 they did Earth to the Small Magellanic Cloud return trip in a year.
How about something from the Perry Rhodan universe? Yes, it's pulp. it's weirdly antiquated, and probably no one outside Germany may know it, but during the course of these stories, they more or less routinely bridged the gap to Andromeda or M87 ... so let's throw in classic megalomaniac long-distance spaceships, like the BASIS or the SOL!
Ignoring the D's trip to the "edge of the universe", the fastest ship I have seen in scifi would be the ZPM-powered Daedalus from Stargate Atlantis, which went all the way to Andromeda in a few days.
I guess technically Atlantis itself went through a wormhole from the Pegasus dwarf galaxy to Earth. But I would say that didnt actually fly, it just went through a wormhole and instantly popped out the other side, like a Star Trek ship using the Bajoran wormhole.
I agree the Heart of Gold does not have a speed - so should not be in this race The Liberator or Scorpio (which is faster, but less well known) - Blakes 7
I'm really loving your videos. Can you add Battlestar Galactica to the list of ships you are testing?
Really enjoying this series! Keep it up. Also, i'm predicting Discovery will be DQ'd for the same reason the Heart of Gold was DQ'd.
You are our nerd queen! Amazing video as always!
The Sleeper Service from the culture book excession.
Omg I just read that passage literally just now and popped over here to say this and it’s already the topmost comment

Xeelee Nightfighter! I think it's speed is probably calculable from the novels and I reckon it could be vying for first place over everything else!
Not last! Happy, happy, happy! Fist my bump!
His books are rich in detail but a constant impulse drive + planetary gravity assist will never = constant.
Interesting video still

I got it. Farscape one.
