Also, shouldn't the Consul tricorne be golden?, just asking.
I read this series while me and my wife were on the verge of divorce. I drove her two hours to one of her graduate courses and finished the last book while she was taking a test. I hadn't expected this series to be so powerful and when I finished the last page, I broke down. Each and every single book had a substantial impact on me, and the grief I felt having finished the series (there was a lot) helped give me the strength to work on my marriage. A few years down the road, and we're about to welcome our first baby -- I still think about this series.
@@magnegrofromx-people4325 [SPOILER] I'm an addict. It's caused a lot of strain. What I love is how each of the pilgrims' stories is in a distinct style. The first one feels like "A Canticle for Leibowitz." The next feels like WH40K (or maybe Heinlein). Another is clearly a hard-boiled reminiscent of Gibson's "Neuromancer." I think the Consul's story was probably the least interesting, but it wasn't bad. The others are filled with some of the best reveals I've ever seen in sci-fi. Very compelling.
I loved the Consuls story and I think it may resonate with pessimistic people. I mean His whole story not just the first book. I like that he is just a lonely sad man who lost everything and hates himself for becoming kind of evil to get his mission done. I like it and him as a character. I also loved Meina Gladstone as a character.
I consider this entire series, in quality, as to Dune, the Foundation Series, The Wheel of Time etc.. I remember the smell of the indoor pool at the hotel that I was staying at while I was reading this book in my 20s. That’s how it into where I was. It was almost like a spiritual experience, going along with these pilgrims on this journey. It was magical, and I hope everybody gets a chance to experience it.
I've read the masters and there's nobody better than Simmons in these four books. He starts with some close-ups and then keeps pulling back to let you see more and more context until the story is really epic. His use of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in the first half is brilliant. You won't realize until much later that he's really addressing some important questions about artificial intelligence. Rewards rereading.

They’re my favorite books of all time. While reading, I remember being in constant disbelief that a person actually came up with all this stuff, and not only that, but told it all in such beautiful stories. I read the final 100 pages of the final book through tears.
It took me a while to get invested, but once I finally finished father Hoyt's story, I was hooked until the last book, incredible series. I love how the Pax would use the resurrection later on. The first series I picked up in college to just relax at a coffee shop. It affected me profoundly, and really inspired my love for reading. Nothing has ever come close. I started reading these books because of your suggestion and loved them thank you. Please make more videos on this because some things in the cantos are kinda confusing tho
I was about to make the same comment. Dude in a fancy cloak and tricorne hat? Has to be the Consul. Military dude wearing power armor? Obviously Colonel Fedmahn Kassad.
The only thing the artist could have done to make it more obvious would be to have Kassad in mid coitus with Moneta and the Consul scrounging bottles of whiskey.

Great! Only issue I saw was one you addressed in the pinned comment. That, and Merrin Aspic is the name of the Consul’s grandpa. The consul is never named in the books
This is exactly what I have wanted for a while a basic synopsis of a famous book. I always meant to read but none of the reviews were helpful. Everybody wanted to put in their opinion and I could never get the basic story. Your appreciation for the genre and the internal integrity of the story plot character philosophy is sincere and it shows. The priest's story really affected me as I was attending a Jesuit college at the time. May have had some effect on my view of religion...
Just finished the first Hyperion book, mainly bc of this channel. Thanks! Great read, the format added variety and each story managed to flesh out different parts of the society.
I think the Consul was Merin's grandson, not Merin himself.
What is the introduction theme tune? I love it so much and it sounds so familiar but I'm not entirely sure what it is...
At 3:24 you have the images of the Colonel and the Consul swapped. Otherwise great video and very accurate. Love your work man.
This is one of the rare series that I've read twice. I'd love to see a well done adaptation, even an animated one.
I started reading these books because of your suggestion and loved them thank you. Please make more videos on this because some things in the cantos are kinda confusing tho
You switched the Consul with Kassad at 3:25, Quinn. Oh well, awesome video that aside. Cheers!
As a fan I'll say: this is a much better use of your voice and energy than making videos about the dune film or wb being generally horrible. I support your struggle against those Corp bastards all day and will boycott any content they have made claims on in solidarity, just let us audience members know when it occurs. Thanks so much for all the amazing lore videos and all your hard work.
I love that Rise of Endymion cover art at 00:27!
I have never heard of this novel but after watching this video, I am going to purchase series.
I red “3 body problem” and then “foundation” series which led me to this. I was never a big reader, always preferred films but wow was I wrong.
Great summary! I think you have The Captain and the Consul backwards when you focus on the illustrations of them however
This is awesome that I stumbled upon this by chance I red the Hyperion Contos and its definitely my favorite series I never met anyone else who knew about. My copies were real worn out and old I figured it was just an oldschool scifi.
Just bought the complete Cantos. Plan on giving it a read.
Brace for a major let down.
The Shrike doesn't find true love? Darn.
@@Nugnugnug LOL...imho it's just sooo pretentious.
Can you do a video reviewing the Downstreamers the super godlike transcendent humans from "Manifold" by Stephen Baxter?
As well as Xeelee Sequence and the Culture series?
You should have more subscribers.....this is epic...also is the ' All Thing' referring to the World Wide Web and 'Flatline' is like Wi-fi?
Quinn I'm from Mexico and I'm big fan of your channel, I found it back a couple of years ago and I really love your content and I'm really glad to see that you like Hyperion as well, have you read Malazan Book of the Fallen from Steven Erikson?
Hyperion is a great story. The first book in the Malazan series, Gardens of the Moon was great too. One of my favorites
Gracias amigo,
hugs from Toledo, Spain
So this is book is about a bunch of dudes who gets asked "do you want to take at rip to this remote planet and be tortured for all eternity by a horrific monster?" and they all accept?!
Great! Only issue I saw was one you addressed in the pinned comment. That, and Merrin Aspic is the name of the Consul’s grandpa. The consul is never named in the books
3:24 is The Consul 3:49 is Kassad
This is exactly what I have wanted for a while a basic synopsis of a famous book. I always meant to read but none of the reviews were helpful. Everybody wanted to put in their opinion and I could never get the basic story.
Your appreciation for the genre and the internal integrity of the story plot character philosophy is sincere and it shows. I have been reading Dune since 85 and you are the only non Frank Herbert that I bother with.
Thank you for the effort

I've been dying to read the rest of the series (Hyperion's one of my favorites), so I am glad this video didn't spoil anything!
Read them all! Great series!
I enjoy the different illustrations on the characters. I like the differing head canons....
Thanks Quinn for the introduction
I had the privilege of meeting Dan Simmons in person at a sci-fi convention, many years ago. Very interesting dude.
I'd love to see this adapted into a TV show. I really loved the books!
I think the charm of the series was the superb way it was written. I don't really know how you could translate that into a visual... would be worried that they would ruin it!
@@robertcessford3745 true
Sound fascinating, thanks Quinn.
Just wanted to inform you that your introduction of the characters has Fedmahn Kassad and The Consul switched, The Consul has the tricorn hat.
