    My summary:
    Increase your vocabulary.
Manage the volume of your speech
    Pace your speed .
Don't end sentences which sounds as questions.
    Speak less than you think.
Get rid of any curse words.
Don't interrupt and let others interrupt you.
    Using confident body language.
Speak infront of mirror and analyse your mistakes.

  • @decemberclouds
    @decemberclouds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +453

About interrupting, I took a meditation class once where we had to listen to someone talk for five minutes WITHOUT doing anything . We could not nod, go 'mmm', interrupt, touch the other person, or anything else. You had to simply sit there and *listen.* It was VERY difficult, but I think about this sometimes when I'm listening to someone.
This topic would be interesting to take as a course or series of classes. Thanks for this video as always!

I have always been told that eye contact is essential for polite and effective conversation as well. It shows that you are paying attention to the person and that you care what they are saying. I know in other cultures eye contact can be considered offensive but, to the best of my knowledge, I’ve never encountered this before.

The dying art of being an intelligent, well versed and elegant lady … I didn’t think we would see such a person again! You give me hope that others will be inspired too and a whole new generation of articulate, well mannered ladies (and hopefully gentlemen!) will emerge. A world without coarse language with which many of us cringe, and instead, clear and succinct use of our mother tongue will go a long way in opening up conversations and gaining respect. Keep up the good work! We need many more like you. Thank you. 😊

Lovely. May I add that you never know who is listening. I was presenting a legal case to a government official in an open room setting. My now fiancé was listening from a distance and was impressed with tone, argument, persuasiveness, appearance and he approached me. Not only did he hire me to represent him in my area of legal expertise but sometime later he proposed. He is a complete gentleman, quite tall and extremely wealthy.

Upspeak describes when a declarative sentence ends in a higher pitch which makes what is stated sound like a question. It can be a very difficult habit to eliminate, however not impossible. Becoming aware of the habit is the first step to success. A tip I have is to record yourself speaking and noting when it tends to happen most often. Is it when you're nervous? Are you not sure of your response? Etc. I have also found that being mindful to keep my pitch low as I end sentences to have worked well for me.

Dear ladies! If we talk about social interactions and not about giving a speech, this really helped me:
"Be genuenly interested in others. Feel like humans are the most fascinating creatures, each and every one of them." People generally like to talk about themselves, so ask questions and then listen actively :) They will notice how nice of you it is that you are interested in them. At least this is what helped me to overcome my social awkwardness, I hope it will help you too.

Wonderful video Jamila! I would add to the first point on vocabulary that simply using big words doesn't make one an eloquent speaker! I find vocabulary to be helpful to find SPECIFIC words to use in the right place and not necessarily pretend to be a walking thesaurus. Unnecessarily using difficult words can come off as pretentious and make it difficult for others to understand you, which defeats the point of using words, we use them for people to understand us.
Many people are guilty of making this mistake so I had to point it out!
Also I used to speak very fast and my words would be hard to understand for some people. I learned on the internet that focusing on the consonants instead of vowels makes it easier for people to understand you. As soon as I started focusing on it consciously that slowed down my speed and now I have a fairly good pace! I still talk fast when I'm excited but otherwise people have no trouble understanding me.
Also, if a person you know interrupts a lot and you are in an environment where it is safe to crack a little joke, of course it's not applicable everywhere, but you can say "sorry for talking while you were interrupting". It should work 😂😂

    • @JamilaMusayeva

This is nice and all but you forget one thing: your elegance and eloquence will be wasted on an awful lot of people who are neither elegant nor eloquent themselves.
I used to be more elegant and poised and articulate and then it kind of just went away because I had more important things to focus on. And being surrounded by trashy people/family members didn't help.
But then again, that's the whole point of having class, isn't it? That you stay classy and dignified even while others are not!
    Heheh.

I've regret silence a lot. But I get stuck in thinking. I do agree I regret it LESS than if I say too much. I don't know of most situations where people will wait for you to say something for ten seconds. Most times the topic is changed or someone is already in the middle of talking. 😢 I hope I meet more people that give time. It's honestly worse now than it used to be. Also a lot of interruptions. Though I know narcissism and similar are more prevalent today.

I definitely have trouble with the volume of my speech. I grew up in a loud family who talk over each other so that is something I need to work on! I also sometimes have trouble with the talking to quickly. It's hard to relearn how to speak but I'm hoping to be a better example for my kids.

Thank you, Jamila, for sharing these videos! I was wondering if you could teach us about small talk; when I go to social gatherings, as an introverted entrepreneur, I genuinely would like to get outside and talk to people, but I fought myself very uncomfortable in small talk situations.
