I was the copywriter who dreamed this spot up. To my knowledge it's the only time that Rat Fink ever spoke, so I got to give him the voice. It was a great experience working with Ed Roth. I still have notes from Ed during the animation process commenting on the progress, "fatten him up" as well as the original animation frames. My only copy exists on a decaying 3/4" video so I was excited to find this (at my 27 year olds request.)
YOU did this? Thats awesome. I remember being a young child and singing this song was one of the little in-jokes my friends and I had through that whole year, practically. And we also sang the hamburger helper lasagna commercial, with the italian hand-puppet, from the same era.
I was born in 1964. I remember getting little Rat Fink plastic figures in the .25 cents and .10 cents toy bubble vending machines. That was a treasure!
born in 92, got a rat fink tattoo on forearm of rat fink in my dark green 1992 corvette (exaggerated of course my vette is in it big motor blower ect) but it is guys in your age group a long with my father who get it most subscribed to the magazine wich i never knew existed until i got the ink, I just enjoyed the art style
I remember seeing this toy commercial on YT when I was young and even discovered Rat Fink along Ed Roth's other stuff on Google and they were awesome :D
I had this as a kid!!! I still remember the theme song (got an 8-ball shifta!!) I'm 30 years old now, kinda wish I still had it dammmmmmit!!!! Thanks for the memories Mr. Phillips! -Collin
This just popped into my head. I had to come look it up. I remember the commercial "You drive me WiiiiiiiiiLD!", better than I remember the actual toy. LOL
My mom hated these guys. I actually found an Ed Roth knockoff t-shirt one time with a wolf character in his car shouting "Outta my way!" but she wouldn't let me take it home. Sadly she hasn't changed much, we still haven't spoken in years.
I actually HAD one of them! I got this on an old VHS with Dinosaucers. Yeah, the animation of them is top quality and the toys were entertaining as heck.
I did'nt see the ad , but I heard about it....The Rat Fink toys weren't available for long. I heard that only Toys 'R' Us was carrying them , but , they had none when I went there. I did find 'em , later. But , did they really think kids of 12 and under were going to care? God love 'em if they did. Roth said he hated them , they did'nt look like classic hot rods , and he hated the "Lipstick " look on Rat Fink. But , just the fact that there WAS a series of Rat Fink toys ( and , later, "Blink and you'll miss 'em" reissues of the models , too.) gave me cause to hope.
@@qdingle69 Yes. The voice of Darkwing Duck, Winnie the Pooh, Pete, Bonkers, and etc. Voiced/sung for Ratfink in this commercial. And that is his official last name, don't fun of it.
ah! i remember this one, when to my high school and saw painitng of big daddy himself and rat fink "he was from bell high school and i gald i was their!" and wonder how much those days cost?
Someone else in another TH-cam video that's mirroring this commercial stated this. "I (Mark Heller) produced this...John Dilworth and Dan Haskett animated. Big Daddy Ed Roth loved it!"
I believe Rob Zombie was heavily inspired by Ed Roth. Watch the desert hallucination scene in Beavis and Butthead Do America. The whole scene was based on artwork that Rob Zombie drew.
When a rat fink is done in he still makes a face and still is unwilling. That means he is on to you even though he is not around. It is like depositing money in the bank and the bank goes out of business one hour later. Your money is there still but the place of business is no longer functioning. Why does it seem like the same story but with a different scenario -- all the time?

Damn, I almost thought that was Jim Cummings. Great job, though!
Thanks man
Was it Ralph Bakshi who did the animation? The 1st few seconds of the red monster looks very much in his style!
There could’ve been an animated series based on this.
Probably would've been another Ren and Stimpy clone
Ren and stimpy but with hot rods I'd be up for that
Now it should...
But sadly. The planned was scrapped due of ed roth died in 2001 :(
True, it kinda makes me wish I were to make my own character based on Rat Fink but as either a Kaiju or a Giant Robot driving a Tank or a Truck :D

Neato! Makes me wish Rat Fink got his own cartoon show.
Amazing animation for a little known commercial XD

I thought about this commercial and now I'm here lol. Remember this as a kid

“Edward Roth 1990”
I had this still stuck in my head for almost 40 years wish commercials still did songs and jingles, everything is so bland now...
0:26 YOU'LL DRIVE ME WILD! FINK! FINK!
didnt know this was a thing. rat fink was the name of a funny face my dad did years ago.
I hear two recognizable voices in this commercial.
Jim Cummings as Rat Fink, and Rob Paulsen as Clod Hopper (the red monster announcer guy).
Really?!
@@provokedrobin608 Yep!
Jim "Cummings" ???

God it looks like you taped that "Spruce Goose" movie a friend had to tell me about. Good thing I missed it as a kid!
“Got an 8 ball…”. Wasn’t sure where that was going for a minute lol
I got a rat fink keychain from a car museum once

OOOH! John Dilworth!
Sad that kids these days just arnt into this stuff anymore.
Brutally wild!
the inspiration for my nickname since 8th grade and still going ;)
i love his voice!
Rat Fink here kind of reminds me of Mr. Bumpy from Bump in the Night, any chance he was voiced by Jim Cummings in this commerical?
Good ear. Probably very likely.
Think FINK!
hot rods rock the world
cool commercial man
rat fink is INSAAAAAAANE :D
Seems a lot like the Penny Racers we used to have
@manlyflash Forgotten "Madballs" have we? *grin*

I used to have one of the toys, but sadly it broke. :(
Moody Rudy is freakier than both of those. Go look him up.

Yeah, he said the line "Better than a bunch of singin' raisins!"
