Calathea Orbifolia Care Guide For Beginners - Goeppertia Orbifolia Tips

  • Today I want to share a beginners care guide video for Calathea Orbifolia or Goeppertia Orbifolia as it is now known. Personally, I like it being a Calathea Orbifolia and it will probably take me years to stop calling it that!
    The first thing to be aware of with these prayer plants is that they are quite tricky to look after and if you are a beginner with houseplants it's going to be a steep learning curve! They can sulk if they don't get enough water, they get brown leaf tips really easily and can be quite sensitive to tap water and even strong fertiliser so don't worry too much if you struggle at first, it's the same for us all!
    Water: Plenty of water, it doesn't like to dry out.
    Light, bright indirect light is best, direct sun will scorch the leaves.
    Humidity. This plant needs as much humidity as you can give it, don't worry if you have a dry house over winter, just be aware that the leaves will most likely brown at the edges and go crispy.
    Feeding: During the active growing season of Spring through to Autumn feed it once or twice per month with a dilute plant fertiliser.
    Let me know if you have any good Calathea Orbifola care tips for your own down in the comments below.
    Thanks for watching.

    Very helpful info on this plant. I got mine a few weeks ago & wasnt even sure what it was. It was reduced in price at the grocery store. I like to rescue plants & tag said calathea. Didnt specify which variety though. Your video helped me identify it. Mine is very very small. Thanks!

    I always leave them in their nursery pots now & put them in an attractive cover pot. Wish I had started doing it years ago - much easier & better for my plants ✅

    Don't buy mature plants buy small they can be more adjustable to your environment mature plants havent grow in ideal conditions which you can't replicate at home but smaller plants can adjust

    My Orbifolia was the 1st prayer plant I bought. The rest have died and or had mites to many times that I put in my compost. I do still have my 3 Marantas, so with the Orb. I find good enough with those plants. Will not by the other again after a year of struggling with them. As always I enjoy your videos. Thank you.

      They can be frustrating Susan! At least the Marantas are still going strong.

    This is the best care info for this particular plant. I just purchased this one and the Rattlesnake due to their beauty. So far so good! Like your orchid behind you. Thank you!

    Useful video thanks. But to be precise, fertilizer is not food for plants. Sugar created by the plant itself during photosynthesis is the food. Nutrients from the fertilizer only help the process, so they are like supplements.

    for the tapwater problem I use Easy-life Aquamaker, which makes tap water fish-friendly by removing every heavy metal end chlorine it's safe for plants and u can even overdose it I use this in my Aquarium as well

    I'm a complete beginner, this is the first plant I've ever owned for myself. Within two weeks, the leafs started hanging more, and it's full of brown spots. I think the problem is that my house has huge double sides Windows, so the light, that's already pretty harsh, gets even more amplified. The only problem is that the rest of my house is almost completely dark. I don't have a humidifier, I don't know how much water it needs, I have no idea what type of soils there are. Thanks for making this video though. Since it's been in direct sunlight for way to long and only got a little bit of water, it's probably severaly dehydrated. I gave it alot of water and put it in the sink. I hope with a little less light and a little bit more water, it will get better

      Sorry to hear that Deirdre, they are quite tricky plants to look after especially if you are new to houseplant keeping, you have done the right thing in watering it well and leaving it to drain out, it will appreciate the bright light but not on a window sill in the full sun, so if you can find a spot further back from the window it will enjoy all the bright light, just remember to check it regularly as it wont like drying out completely. Good luck.

      It does need humidity they can survive @50 - 60%. At least mine has been. You can even grow them in Leca from what I’ve seen on The Leca Queen’s TH-cam channel. Jmo

    Also I always spray new plants coming into my home with hydrogen peroxide 6%. It disinfects the plant & they can cope with it no problem. They are my favourite plant also 😍

    Am not sure if I have this plant or it’s a hosta . It has a similar pattern but more darker . Am having trouble with a little crispy leaf but little brown spots under the leaves , is this due to overwatering? I was watering every other day but now 1-2 a week . Got it in a shaded window but open the window on it daily

    Hi, I have since a year georgeous Calathea Orbifolia. She was veryy happy and growing up a lot. Last week I changed the pot and put it into two seperate pots. But Unfortunately both are unhappy😓. Although their soil is moist, they threw their leaves very low. What do you suggest I do. Thanks

    Mr. mouse, that plant had damaged edges-you didn't! No, no that was something else. Oh thank goodness. Andy gave good advice on how to water plants today didn't he? Yep! I know it's winter there I hope you're staying warm. Oh yeah, in my hole in the wall-snug as a bug in a rug. Good to hear just checking in, see ya. Ok bye.

    We keep ours in the bathroom. And Ours has all of a sudden dropped… we thought it was over watered as the soil was very wet … do you think it maybe has dried out too much?

    • @HouseplantHacks
      @HouseplantHacks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the soil is very wet then this may well have been over wartered, does it have drainage holes in the bottom where excess water can drain out?

    I bought one of these a few months ago and has been doing well up until this last week where the leaves have gotten pale and one or two of them have got brown in the centre of the leaves, almost like they are rotting? I've cut these leaves off, checked for mites and have now taken it off the windowsill incase this is due to scorching. Is there anything else I can do?

    • @HouseplantHacks
      @HouseplantHacks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i tink if it was on the window sill it was probably scorched by the direct sun, you did the right think by taking it down, they want a bright spot but not in the direct sun. give it some time and see how it goes.
