Sean, I got my first calathea (a Dottie/black lipstick) a month and a half ago, and she's died back significantly and lost most of her leaves bc I didn't know how to take care of her at first! But after watching your videos, I think I finally got it down! I stuck her outside in the shade where it's more humid, gave her a mixture of cactus/succulent mix, perlite, and orchid bark in a clear plastic orchid pot (to check water/roots), and rainwater from the first time it rained this summer. And to my surprise, today I found that she's pushing out two new shoots! Thank you for making calathea care so simple and less frightening! They truly are resilient plants!
Yayeee. Happy to hear that. Calatheas are very misunderstood but once you get the care right, most calatheas have the same care. Hope you can explore more varieties
You are, by far, my favorite plant-tuber. You are so genuine and honest. Thank you for your videos and your experiments and your successes, your updates, and also your, sometimes, brutally honest failures 🙂❤
I love your channel! I learned so much. I just bought my first Orbifolia from a local nursery a couple of weeks ago. I just love the way they look, so beautiful! I’ll have to go back to the local nursery and see if they still have any left… they were on discount for half price for 3 euros 😅 I know they can be finicky but I’m more confident after watching your videos 🫶🏻
Great to see how easy they propagate by cuttings of the mother plants. Mine is putting out 4 or 5 new leaves and has settled well next to a very large philodendron red Congo and micans. Like you said an aerated, jungle soil mix makes all the difference and keeping the plant moist but not wet. Love how you experiment and do these time lapse videos. Not many plant enthusiasts do this. So it makes your channel extra special. Cheers, Jo from NZ.
Thank you so much! I kept researching “pods” or “bulbs” on the roots of my goeppertia orbifolia with zero results. Google said to keep them; you’ve shown us all that they are babies 👶🏽🤗 Going to repot my babies and see how it goes. Thank you, again! 🙏🏾
I just repot my calathea. The roots are all tied up so tightly. I didn't know I can just tear it apart like what you did at 10:36! I was so nervous they could die. Also There are sooo many babies. I didn't know they are babies until I watched your video! I enjoy your video, great content. Thanks for sharing Sean!
This was fascinating! One of my favorite calatheas, which I also just killed recently. But, i love the time lapse and that you are so willing to take apart and propagate your plants with reckless abandon in the name of research! It is very helpful!
When the rhizome develops in width enough you can cut it and separate the little shoots, but those underground things are tubers and merely water and nutrient storage systems, not babies capable of reproducing. The more you have the better. They give energy to the plant, they don't take it away. They're not like corms on alocasias. I've had asparagus plants grow back from only roots and tubers after being cut down but they're invasive and far less sensitive than calatheas/goeppertias and it's the only case I've heard of that happening.
Thanks aniliname! This is super helpful. I have a maranta with one stem dying off with just a tad of green at the base with a bunch of tubers. Hoping it survives but with your experience looks like it might not if marantas have the same structure 😿
Wooh I need to try that one more time because Im pretty sure I got the calathea dotties grown from corms (ones I showed in the middle of the video). But im not 100% sure as i did not document the process for that one.
My orbis is one of my easiest and happiest plants! I have a diff calathea and it’s growing like an insane beast. I live in SC and these guys live in my eat in kitchen. Very good light and def humid!
This was so helpful! I had no idea those little bulb thingies were babies. My Calathea had at least 20 of them. I planted them just like you did before seeing the end of the video. Lol I will remember not to overwater them. 🤞
Thank you!! I love these plants. I have a large one and a small one, the small one has just stopped growing, I'm going to take it outside and repot into the soil you recommend, and I'm in Florida so she's gonna get a dose of humidity!! The big one is still in the pot I bought it in, plastic and big and it's also in the house but doing better. It does dry out faster. I think the little one is in the wrong pot too. I refuse to lose this one LOL I have other Calatheas, and they are doing fine, this little one is temperamental haha
8:55 I think rhyzomes are stems/batang that specializes to grow underground as means of vegetative reproduction. I need to check my botany books again. Those might be tubers (specialized roots) or corms (I doubt this).
Thanks for sharing. My orbifolia is doing pretty good inside, and with not much humidity or sun. I am surprised, but maybe it’s acclimated to my space. I just noticed that it does not care for tap water though, but sometimes I am lazy and just use the tap lol. Nice informative video as always! Really is a beautiful plant, and not pricy either!
Thank you Sean for your sharing about Orbifolia. You're correct.. those rhizome/bulb cause my calathea grow slower. When I divided those rhizome/bulb, they back growing fast :).. I pot the rhizome/bulb and nothing growing until now (almost 3 month)...
Hmmm interesting someone did comment that those will not have babies. Although I was sure my calathea dottie sprouted babies this way before, now I cannot be certain. Ill have to try one more time again just to be sure!
You were able to get leaves grow from the rhizome/bulb? That’s exciting! I found a lot of those when I repotted my makoyana but I could not find much information about propagating from them at all
Hi Sean! Thank you for your excellent Videos! I'm enjoying them very much and am learning A LOT ... from Fiji! I think those "bulbs" are called root nodules ... Cheers!!!
Mines is doing okay. It is in bright filter light and near a humidifier fan. It doesn't look like I want but it's not very crisp so it's fine I guess. They're tough. I also use systemic insecticide as well. They're indoors and not draining into the water system.
I loved mine but it died. The rising fuel costs meant I couldn't heat my home this winter and keep it above 18 degrees Celsius. Time to find some cold loving plants I guess.
There are youtube videos on growing Calatheas hydroponically. Did you try to take the "pups" from such a plant and root it in water as well? I'm curious if you can, at all, grow new plants from pups as I have a dryer climate, so I don't think overwatering was the issue. I did not get new plants. I don't know if the pups died or I did not wait long enough.
@@onlyplantsI am trying it now. I will let you know. I cut off those tubers bc my plant got infected after converting to hydroponics. They had jelly in them. Do you know if they grow back?
Super helpful video. I just separate my Calathea orbifolia two weeks ago, but the leaves and stems of the newly potted small ones (all have roots while propergation) are becoming very soft and can't keep standing. Have you also seen that happen?
I would rule out spider mites first, and then check the roots. It may not have enough roots to support it yet (hence needing more time) it may also have been over or under watered…
How often do I water this plant ? Had one around 5 weeks it’s a drama queen ! It’s grew loads but a lot of brown spots under the leaves. I had to repot it as the leaves are constantly hanging down . Am now watering from the bottom. And given her liquid plant feed . Any tips on making her leaves come back up please
Hmmm this is a tough one to figure out… how often to water depends on the potting media and your environment. They love good air movement though and suffer when its stiff air.
So, some of the ''babies'' grew up from that ''bulb'' from the mother plant and some of them did not succeed, right? I love the fact that we can reproduce more of our favorite plants just from one single plant we had...and suddenly we have a little jungle of them..haha
Hi Sean! Thanks for the guide! I wonder if there's a certain time of year when it's better to do calathea division? I am in a humid subtropical climate in Nepal, but this time of year temperatures get down to 7 C. Should I wait for warmer weather to divide? Or for monsoon as you have?
@@onlyplants Ikr! And the outdoor stromanthe triostar if happier than the indoor orbifolia (which doesn't get quite as cold) at the moment. I will try to hold back for a couple more months. Thanks!

Yes, I wouldn't try to propagate from that and instead allow it to develop on it's own. That's where new plants come from over time. If they fall off I put it back in the pot. Alocasia does that too.
you mention at the beginning of the video that the leaves should be dry, but throughout the whole video i see the leaves basically wet, so which one is it? dry or wet?
I probably just watered it before the videos… I hose my plants down once a day. They live outside in great airflow and light, where leaves dry out in 15-30 min. If its indoors or in poor ventilated area I recommend to water the soil level only.
How long does it typically take a rhizome to grow, like the other calathea that you showed i believe you called it black lipstick.... from rhizome to leaves, how long did that take?
Im not entirely sure, it took a very very long time though. Someone commented that these rhizomes wont sprout plants.. now I am confused haha. Ill have to try one more time and this time to document it properly and care for it properly to be sure.

I think people have issues when they bring it home from 80-90 humidity nurseries. They can actually adapt to lower humidity but it takes time. This is why I hardly mention humidity in my calathea care videos
Those underground tubers are not rhizomes on Calatheas, they are water tubers, that store water, so they are part of the root, no plant will come out of it, liko on Alocasias. :)
