The 'picture-framed' one has such gorgeous ideas and thoughtful textures put into it; I especially like how the flowers spill out over the frame boundaries and the idea to break up the straight-edge with the mohair yarn turned out sooo lovely! 💖

This is a very clear, thorough and concise tutorial for beginners, without getting too many technical in the way. She has left nothing out which others seem to sluff over. I especially like the color chart using colored paper...brilliant! I love your paintings and the quilts are darling!💚🫶🏻

    THANK YOU!!!
After trawling applique vids for well over an hour in which other designers just start sewing applique pieces onto a mystical, never to be mentioned, just happens to magically be there!, background fabric! I have found you who has explained all the basics about how to start an art quilt.
    Thank you once again.

Thanks for contacting the National Quilters Circle with your question. The majority of the fabrics used in the project shown here were batiks. The intensity of the colors and the wonderful texture they contain lend themselves well to this style of art quilt. Batik fabrics can usually be found at your local quilt shop or through online shops. Selecting them in person does ensure the color tones and values are pleasing for the intended use. The artist featured here does also refer to using traditional quilting fabrics in some of her creations. Enjoy the journey.
      Happy Quilting,
      Colleen Tauke

So how do you cut out the curved & difficult shapes so neatly? It seems like that might be the trickiest part in getting your quilts to look as nice as yours followed by the design and color/fabric choices.

      Hello,
I'm not sure how Karen does it herself, but personally, I would trace each template piece onto fusible web, fuse it onto the chosen fabric, then cut out the piece using sharp, pointed scissors. The fusible web would serve to stabilize the piece and protect the edges while you were working with the art quilt, then also serve to adhere the piece onto the background fabric.
You could also trace your template onto a thick piece of paper, such as cardstock, then trace the perimeter using a pen or fabric marker on the wrong side of the fabric.
For a more specific answer, you can contact Karen through her website. www.karengillistaylor.net/how-to-purchase
      Hope this helps!

      Hi,
I would recommend quilting in the 'film strip' area only, with only something like stitch in the ditch done around the photos. You could do something simple, like straight lines, in the strips or have fun and do ornate quilting or fill stitches.
      Cheers,
      Ashley
